[Q] Rooted Wifi Tethering Issues - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Hi All.
I am rooted and running BoneStock. I have tried to use "Wifi Tether for Root Users" and the TrevE Mod Version, as well. I used instructions for JB that I saw in many places, one of which is here: http://highonandroid.com/android-ap...android-smartphone-or-tablet-universal-guide/. I have also tried several configuration variations on my own. I have never been able to see my SSID from other devices and, often, the phone ends up in a state where neither wifi or mobile data will connect until I reboot.
I was trying to avoid paying for Foxfi, if I can.
Has anyone else had success?
- Rob

I've still had no luck. Anyone else?

Thanks for using my ROM! Hope you are enjoying it!!
Does the stock Verizon hotspot work?
or do you have unlimited data? and can't test

I have unlimited data.

I have unlimited data, root, unlock, and Bonestock and the wife-tether trevE mod works great.
I looked at the page you listed and have different settings. Try the default settings with the following modifications:
generic (wlan0)
enable wi-fi encryption
wi-fi driver reload 1 enabled
wi-fi driver reload 2 disabled
MSS clamping enable
routing fix enable

That fixed it. Thanks much.

Thank you guys for this, I will link to this thread in the FAQ.
Much appreciated!

Thanks, this worked like a charm!
If anyone followed the directions straight from the site and is having trouble with SSID not being broadcast, just change the Setup-Method to "Auto" and turn off "Send Netd Max Client Cmd" and your access point will be visible.

What is the difference between standard wifi tether and that mod'd version. Does the standard one not work?

Won't be able to use without root (I'm assuming you're not because of your sig)

I am rooted, just haven't changed the sig yet lol. But I just tried the s3 toggle apk method and worked perfect..

Can you elaborate on this? Thanks
Also, can somebody link the actual wifi tether file they found to be successful? I have noticed different versions and I'm not sure which one is the ideal version for our device.

Are you stock rooted or running a Rom? I used it on Andy's, I haven't tried it since being on ecliptic, but I would maybe try a fresh install and try the toggle again?

I followed settings posted on this thread and my tethering can run without errors, but it won't broadcast ssid. Did i need to install something during the bonestock aroma installer? I have
wlan0
Auto Setup
Driver reload 1
MSS, Routing Fix On
NetD Max Client Off
Edit: Got it working, had to download the latest version of Treve Mod https://code.google.com/p/wifi-tether-treve-mod/downloads/list

I'm on ecliptic now and tried it, it's detected but doesn't connect. I did have the toggle hotspot method working on Andy's, but neither are working on this. I'm going to try passing with more settings and see.

Hi, I am no techie! I rooted my HTC One M7 (Verizon) and have a stock Rom. I tried various tethering apps, unsuccessfully. This is what worked form me in the end although without encryption.
Treve-mod tethering app version 3 (unable to post the link
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup method: WEXT (ad-hoc)
Routing fix: checked (enabled)
This is working well and all of my devices are able to see and connect to the network! Even when I enable encryption, it is not working.
Hope this helps.

WiFi Tether

I have tried stock and Damage roms, and still can't get wifi tether to work. Phone is fully rooted, with all the goods. I can use alternate wifi tether programs from the market, that do adhoc only, and they work. Is anyone else have this issue, or have any ideas?
Did you use wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk?
same problem here. am we the only ones? why?
anyway, go to the market, and download the one there, it works fine for me.

I use that version with stock .6 ROM, works great.
Yeah, it works great and even appears as a regular access point. My problem has been getting intermittently disconnected and having to turn off/on tethering. Other than that, it works great.
same here ^^^ its been killing me cuz theres now warning of disconnect or anything but i love it!
Just make sure you guys get titanium backup and uninstall it. Then install it from the market place.
I had the same issue. I had to install the one from the market place, reboot, install the 2.0.5 version, reboot, start it and then it worked.
I haven't tried to replicate success this way as I don't want to risk breaking it again, but I've tried everyconceivable combination of getting it to work and this was the only way that did.
whats so different about 2.0.5???

Wireless Tethering after using 1.47.651.1 Root Method

I don't know if the latest root method for OTA 1.47.651.1 (---==={ROOT GUIDE}===--- | 1.47.651.1 ROOT method | has been tested for Wireless Tethering. I would imagine that it doesn't make a difference... root is root, and there isn't much of anything changing on the phone AFAIK...
I've searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer.... probably because this is so new...
When WiFi is off I try wireless tethering and get an error message: Unable to start tethering, please try again. I turn on WiFi and start wireless tethering I get the same error message and WiFi turns off. I've tried this with all of the various connection types: Charge Only, HTC Sync, Disk Drive, and Internet sharing. When I try to select internet sharing, I get the following message: "Error Code 67. Registrationg failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again."
I found This How-To-Guide, which references Toast's method...but I'm curious if there's a difference between that method and the one listed above for the latest OTA.
Thanks.
[EDIT]P.S. I can confirm that WiFi does work. I can connect to local WiFi networks when they are available.

Hi.. looks like you are trying to use the buid in stock (Sprint Hotspot) tethering app.. if this is the case it will not work.. you need to root your phone and once you load a rooted ROM (ex. Fresh 0.5.3 or any other one) use the wifi tether app already included in those ROMs.. sometimes you need to reinstall the wifi app . in that case uninstall the wifi tether app and go to this address on your phone and download the latest app for the Evo. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
hope this helps...
P.S. I attached the app from the address above to the post.. good luck

I figured as much. I am not using the Sprint app. I've tried the first app listed in the android market, as well as one straight from Google that's 2.0.2. It's supposed to work for the Evo... I have the same problem with both apps.
Which connection type do I need to select on my phone?

jejeje.. I did mention any other ROM as well ....
Guess the op can ignore me if he likes but what's the point of rooting if you are not going to check out various other ROMs..
if all the OP is needing is wireless teather then he should have just gone the unrevoked route.

Not going to ignore you.... not completely. I just want tethering to work so I can test it and see if it's going to work for me. Then i'll mess with other ROMs. The stock Sprint one has too much crap in it... I hate nascar...
Pezu23
I do not know if this matters but are you using a rooted ROM ? I ask because the first time I ran thw wifi tether app it ask for super user access.. maybe you need a rooted ROM flashed on the phone before this app can work.. I have no reference point since I used the toast method to root my phone..
If you can follow toast method of rooting and unlocking the NAND.. you will still have a sprint base (rooted) ROM but this time you can delete the "Nascar app" and anything else you want..
The one in market is not the best one 2.05 pre 2 I think is the best it does infrastructure mode allowing almost any device to connect

I did get it working with Fresh, but I was having other problems with Fresh 0.5.3 like the camera would sporadically go out. I guess I may have to reload fresh (which I really liked, by the way)
I rooted using the link in your first post then installed the newest DC rom and now the newest baked rom. Neither allows me to wifi tether (though no errors) as I dont see a network being created. Any ideas? Did I root wrong or screw up my radios?
Thanks!
cool.. ill try that..
Maybe I'm confused...
When I run adb shell I can gain root access. However, it appears as though HTC Sense (or any other launcher) is not running as root..or at least the programs launched within Sense (i.e. astro file manager, wireless tether) are NOT running as root. I can only create dirs in /sdcard with Astro File Manager...Guess I gotta figure out how to wipe and restart.
Not to complicate your current line of thought, but I don't think normal file managers can create new files in system. only programs that request su will pop up in the su app. But the wireless tether should.
I am running basically stock with the tether and it works. But there is something to be said about trying to start over
Did you guys also loose 4g signal..And i hardly have any 3g bars to tether with...Before rooting after OTA everything worked perfect....Is 3g and 4g giving yall issues?

Need wifi tether app with infrastructure mode

Ok, so my new Kindle Fire cannot see ad-hoc networks. So, using Wireless Tether I get no signal on the Fire from the E4GT.
I'm reading that I need a tether app that supports infrastructure mode or to change the device profile in Wireless Tether to an LG Optimus. I don't see the option for this.
Anyone?

Go here and download the latest beta version of the WiFi Tether apk and install it. This is the version you need to be able to switch the profile of WiFi Tether to the LG Optimus.

Ok, done and installed, however I'm getting errors each time I start the tethering...
I managed to start it once without errors, but neither a black berry nor the Kindle could see it.
I uninstalled my old Wireless Tether app.
This may be a dumb question, but does the beta app need special permissions? Or does it need to be placed somewhere specifically on the sd card?
I don't think so.
I do believe you have to make sure that the SSID you create is all-lowercase and contains no special characters, and also that "Routing Fix" is enabled in the settings along with everything else.
I don't really know though, so I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
You are rooted correct? Do you have a custom rom installed?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I had to install busybox and use the Ad-hoc Switcher app - ZTO or something - and it was finally able to work!
So maw230,
What exactly did you do?
I attempted to do the same as your last post described, however ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher by HAL9000 (the program I believe you are referencing) is unable to locate the required files in their expected locations.
I already installed BusyBox (By Stericson) and had it install busybox 1.19.3 and my E4GT was rooted using ODIN.
I am going to continue searching, perhaps I can get the HotSpot Hack up and running and report back here. In the meantime, if you could verify what apps exactly allowed you to pull this off- myself and many others would be much obliged!
Thanks
I had no issues with the hotspot hack compared to countless headaches with the other tether apps.

Do you think you can assist me.
I've been trying to do the hotspot hack. I've rooted successfully using qbking77 video.
Next I downloaded the ek02 hotspot odexed version to root of my sd card. Using the stock recovery console, I choose to install from sd card. When I select the hotspot hack file, it just display the green android with a triangle and exclamation point and does nothing else. Then I thought maybe I have to unzip it first, but that wasn't it since it didn't see any files at all. Would like to remain stock as much as possible.
I have the latest firmware from sprint by the way if that makes any difference, ek02.

All you need to do is install a ROM that has the Hotspot hack. IMO PhantomHacker's Blazer ROM is one of the best out there and the hotspot hack comes pre-installed, so all you need to do is use the Sprint Hotspot app once the ROM is installed.
I spent way too much time trying tether apps and using the Adhoc switcher when all I need to do was open the Sprint Hotspot app!
Good luck.

Tether Help

Hi guys I really need some help here. Last night I set out to simply find a way to tether wifi from my GS3 for free. From my understanding that required me to root + download tether app with root admin rights. Apparently it appears to be more in depth than that  unless I’m missing something simple. I’ll just start by giving you my specs and tell you what I’ve done so far. Sorry for the long post.
Sprint
Galaxy S3
SPH-L710
JellyBean 4.3
Hardware L710.14
Stock kernel and rom
Followed the steps in this link to root it. It pretty much walks me through using Odin to root the phone. Looks like it also installs SuperSU for superuser access. I like the fact that it’s not too invasive, which is great because I simply want wifi tethering and am not looking for a custom kernel or rom. http://honai-android.blogspot.com/20...-sph-l710.html
Supersu
When I start the phone it says “Unfortunately SuperSU has stopped”
Downloaded the apk, ran it, launched ok, asked me to disable knox and said yes, rebooted phone, got same msg that supersu stopped, runs fine after install apk but fails after every reboot. Maybe knox is screwing with it?
No supersu update on the play store
Regardless I installed root checker and says the device has root access…
I downloaded a bunch of tethering apps I thought had root access but none actually enabled tethering.
Foxfi
When I use CDMA only (used this for troubleshooting purposes) Launch Foxfi, activate wifi hotspot, “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”’
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
When I cancel out of that popup it says FoxFI hotspot ready and has the wifi icon on the notification bar but can’t find the wifi network on devices
Also it never requests superuser
1 click wifi tethering free
Launch, click enable, the notification bar says hotspot connected but then I get the same error “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”, still can’t see the network on other devices
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
Also it never requests superuser
Wifi Tether TrevE Mod v3.3
Launch, opens fine, asks for superuser access, click button to enable tethering, get an error in the app that says “tethering started with errors! Please check ‘show log’”
Clicking show log gives me an error of “Unable to open log file. File does not exist.”
It still shows a message “Tethering is currently running…” under the “ongoing apps” section but still can’t find wifi network on other devices
Jtether
Launch, “says turning Wifi AP on” requests superuser access, eventually gets to the same message that says “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
Oddly when I launch Jtether with FoxFI on I can see the FoxFI network for literally 1 second, but not long enough to connect. This only happens when I use CDMA only. When I use LTE/CDMA it never shows up at all.
.
I’ve uncovered a lot of issues but I don’t know where to start troubleshooting. Do I start with SuperSU errors or can they be omitted? Do I start with FoxFI error troubleshooting? Maybe start with finding out why TrevE’s tether mod has errors but log file can’t be found? Maybe the root method I used wasn’t ‘deep’ enough? If so what method should I use? I thought this would be way easier but hours and hours later, here I am with no wifi tethering. I hope you guys can help.
Thnx in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply! What exactly is this file? Is it a new kernel? Or does it simply edit the configurations relating to tethering? Also can I go back to 100% stock after flashing it?
Also will this prevent me from being able to update the OS via Samsung push updates?

It is not new firmware. It's just a modified services.jar file. Since it's a hack, you will not be 100% stock after installing it. (You can get back to it by restoring the stock files (.jar and .odex files).

7.1.1. Tethering & Portable Hotspot "fix"

Upgrading to 7.1.1. kills your ability to use the old Network Signal Refresh trick to quickly enable your hotspot. The fix for this is now to just pop out your simcard, and when you stuff it back in, immediately activate your hotspot in settings. What I'm doing is just keeping the simcard "key" inbetween my phone and my case, so when I need to activate my hotspot it's a quick pop out pop in throw the switch. 5 seconds max from start to finish and I'm up and running.
I upgraded to 7.1.1. right away w/ out even looking at the forums and learned the hard way that they killed off the non-root method of tethering (Network Signal Refresh)
I believe they also killed of the airplane mode to tether trick as well as I had that down and now it isn't working for me at all.
Pop out the sim, shove it back in, flip the tether switch and your in business.
You may now hit the "Thanks" button lol
This trick isn't working for me...I'm able to turn on hotspot once I put the SIM card back in but as soon as LTE is about to pop up, it shuts off my hotspot. Sigh...had I only known, I wouldn't have updated..
You are a lifesaver!

It's a timing issue. I had trouble the first few tries too but I can confirm that it worked. Pop in Sim first and immediately activate hotspot.

Reboot your phone and try again. Pretty much w/ in less than half a second of snapping the SIM card back into place I hit the tether button and it turns on and stays on.
I can confirm this works. Hotspot has been running since yesterday.
Anyone find a software fix for this yet? Glad we have a solution, but would love to not have to pop my sim out all the time!

if rooted just do the build.prop edit
Work around
Go to the pdanet icon (bottom right) with your phone tethered to your computer,
left click on the icon and choose "Wifi Share (Beta)
another authentication (activation) window appears and will ask for a Wifi name and password
activate and your wifi network should be activated and accessible.
Hope this works for others.
I am using a Google Pixel (32gb) phone and laptop.

The kernel now had dm-verity that will revert any changes to /system that you make. Rooting disables dm-verity and allows modifications to /system to "stick."
I just got my Pixel. It's running 7.1.1 NMF26U.
Like many others, I want to bypass the check and get tethering hotsopt to work but I am afraid to do anything that might cause Android Pay to stop working.
I have been trying to get the SIM pop method to work without success. It does enable Hotspot and stay enabled. I can get computers to connect to the SSID. They do get a 192.168.43.x IP address. They can ping the 192.168.43.1 hotspot GW IP. However they cannot ping anything on the Internet nor do DNS lookups. No throughput to the Internet at all. The phone shows Hotspot running and it shows I have LTE signal. The Pixel itself has working Internet via LTE while Hotspot is on. I've also rebooted the Pixel and tried several more times with the same results.
Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
Are there any ways to edit build.prop that does not involve doing something that would kill Android Pay?
Thanks.

Are you running a VPN for adblocking without root? If so, turn it off while tethering. Just a guess.

No VPN. Basically fresh out of the box phone.
Having a problem as well, up until I got the Pixel I was able to use unlimited tethering on tmobile by adding ",dun" you the apn. This no longer works. Any workaround?

Hi. Here you say to edit build.prop. I checked the whole thread but
How should I edit build.prop. What do I have to add or edit?
