Question about 4G and full bars.

I have an EVO 4G and I've switched back and forth between AOSP ROMs and Sense ROMs. The problem is my 4G will show full bars but the connection is terrible and the speed slows down. For example, on CM7 2 bars of 4G is faster that 3 full bars of 4G. What's the deal?
Bars are never a true way to tell how much signal you have. Every rom has different ways they calculate the amount of bars. Get an app that shows you the actual signal strength in decibels.
yeah there are plenty of apps out of the market that will give you the actual signal like the last post said in decibls. Your 4g tower might have just been down and sprint got rid of wimax so they might not be in a hurry to fix it. I have also noticed in cm7 my bars are always less anyways.
Now just remember wimax isnt like 3g! 3g goes out much further and can cover a lot more area. but with 4g think of it as a wifi network it is really strong at the source but when you get further away it will drop speeds and bars sugnificantly.
If I helped please hit thanks!

4G MIFI vs EVO

I live in an area where this is supposed to be 4G. I have never been able to get more then 1 bar if ANY with my EVO. Today, where I work, We are testing the 3G/4G MIFI device and I am constantly getting between 3-4 bars of 4G and good speed both download an upload (testing using the speed test app). Is there a reason why my EVO would have horrible 4G reception but the MIFI has great reception? This was tested standing in the same locations with the mifi and EVO. We tested with more then one EVO so its not related to just my EVO.
Thanks...
Just to confirm, the mifi device you are using is on Sprint?
And FYI, the amount of bars will vary with ANY device, even devices of the same model. You can take two evos, put them next to each other, and they both could display different bars. What you need to look at is the signal strength in db's. There are apps that do this for 3g signal, although I'm not sure if I've seen one for 4g or not.
Sprint mifi. I tested with 2 evos and A mifi. Mifi had 3 bars 4g both evos had 0 to 1 bar

(Q) how come theres no 3g icon?

Im coming from sprint to tmobile where it was 3g and 4g thats it. No matter what option i pick in mobile network i get the 4g icon up top. Is there no 3g?
SGS4 Tapatalk 2
With sprint they use evdo for 3g data, with tmo they use hspa+ which it technically is a 3g signal (upgraded to get near 4g speeds) they just call that 4g. Then on top of that they have lte which is true 4g. If you dont have lte in your area or you just turn off the lte radio you still get hspa+(hence why it says 4g).
Hope that helps

T-Mobile will not display the 3G icon because it is set up that way, custom ROM's on T-Mobile will display that 3G and H+ icons, rest assured, when using 3G speeds, the phone automatically drops to it. Edge even E, sometimes G lol. My wife's Note2 does that, I have the S2 and rooted with a custom ROM and I can display all when used.
My i9300 has showed everything but "g", guess I'm one of the lucky ones who gets 4g in my area on this beast.

[Q] Signal bars stay full on LTE. Stock OB6

I have the N900T, stock OB6 , unrooted, sim unlocked and on the cricket network. The LTE signal always reads full signal at the top of the screen. If it switches to HSPA+ it will read 4G and the signal will fluctuate like it should and appears to be accurate. While on LTE I am also getting slow speeds, but it is sporadic. I am supposed to get 8Mbps down and around 5Mbps up. I am not even close to that most of the time, although sometimes I will get those speeds. So this may be a network issue, I will see if this clears up. Has anyone else had an issue with the LTE signal bars being inaccurate?

One thing you can check, is the actual signal levels. In the dialer (phone app), dial *#0011# and take a screenshot. This will show both your signal bars, and the actual signal levels (look for RSRP, RSRQ, and SNR). Do this first in a place where you know for sure that your signal should be full bars, then do it again in places where you believe it likely isn't. This will provide good indication on whether it's an actual signal issue, or you're just hitting towers that may not have the bandwidth available.

Verizon Note 4 Call Drop when switching from 1x to 3g after Lollipop

Ever since I downloaded the Lollipop update I constantly have dropped calls. I am typically on 1x here (Never 4g so advanced calling is off and isn't part of the issue as I don't have 4g in my area). The phone will occasionally show 3g. It seems whenever the call is dropped it switches from 1x to 3g. Is this simply because it lost the 1x signal and is now showing 3g for data until I make another call? Or is it something to do with a 1x to 3g "handshake" that isn't transitioning properly?
