i have the galaxy s4 from t-mobile and i hate this phone with a ****ing passion. this **** looses connection almost all the time. i've switched ROMs, kernels, went back to stock, unrooted, re-rooted and did almost everything and it still doesnt have a strong connection. i have checked with t-mobile and the phone is not reported as stolen and that was kind of obvious because it gets connection for 3-20 minutes then it looses and and drives me crazy. i've spent countless hours trying to resolve this thing and i just cannot. its not the sim because it happens randomly and i had an s3 last week that never did this. i also tried a different sim and the same thing happened. i have wi-fi and everything else i just don't have a contant connection to the cellular towers. i even changed the APN settings and **** still didn't work.i am so upset that i am willing to go buy a samsung galaxy s4 from t mobile and return it and instead give them this crappy one because i am so fed up. someone please help me. i would rather have no phone than have a brand new phone that doesn't receive service. this has to be the most frustrating thing ever. i have done countless searches and i am hopeless now. and the switching kernels part, im not reallly exactly sure what that does but i have a feeling that it has something to do with the baseband or whatever and i've switched it a few times and it has worked for a few minutes. the phone will be stuck on searching forever and i've even tried registering manually and nothing still happens. the phone gods must be upset at me. someone help me please.

Try this....dial *#2263#....select LTE GSM. Which is at the bottom. This will force LTE... try it and see if that helps you.

Time for a new model?
I'm getting tired of my S4's problems as well. Since going on vacation in June, I've had constant issues with my data. I see one bar to no bars constantly. I'm frequently on Edge as well (literally and figuratively LOL). I don't usually pay attention to the signal meter 'cause I know it is real world use that matters. But the performance is noticeably bad. Takes forever to load a page and is very slow overall and getting can't connect notices regularly.
TMO actually let me replace it once but I am still having problems.
Everything worked perfectly before my vacation. Had great LTE coverage. And never once saw EDGE.
I'm convinced the problem is on TMO's end, but nothing we've tried will restore my performance.
I hate non removable batteries and no sd card slots, so not a lot of alternatives on TMO. But I may get the nexus or One.

Have you used mobile Odin with any of your flashing on this phone?
I'm just sayin!
Could it be the APN sometimes I see the S4 without the fast.t-mobile.com APN. Also you could try a new SIM. I am just guessing idk for sure and do not take any responsibility.

If he has flashed thru mobile Odin on his phone, I'm willing to bet that's the culprit. The same happened to me on 2 s4's that I restored stock thru MO. At first glance the issue was not as noticeable until I became aware of how unstable the connection was in places it shouldn't have been.
I'm just sayin!

Id say the opposite. Unforce lte and force gsm. The 3g network is much stronger than the 4g network. If it stays on 3g it should have a more consistent signal.

I've been using the Galaxy Nexus for about a month or so and have recently started to notice that the 4G signal will drop whenever I turn on the screen after some time in deep sleep. The signal meter will be fine, until I actually try to use some data. It typically takes about a minute to reacquire a signal, but the phone is essentially useless during that time.
As you can see in the screenshot, there are several red spots where the signal dropped out. I am not in a poor coverage area, and others with the same device do not have these issues. I saw this with a rooted 4.0.2 OTA and am still seeing it with a rooted, deodexed 4.0.4 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481613).
What do people think? Will exchanging the phone possible fix the issue? Is there anything Verizon can do to try and help me out? I'm basically just spitballing here, but this problem is making my phone very frustrating to use.
Are you rooted or stock? I don't have any issues with my 4G on stock or rooted with Gummy 0.7.6. I had an issue with an earlier root where my 4G would drop. I would disable / re-enable and it would start to work again. Maybe try rooting if you are not rooted????

Yes, I see this on rooted stock, as well as the ROM I referenced in the original post (supposedly deodexed 4.0.4 stock ROM)
EDIT: From several posts in the other thread, this issue is not isolated to me or my hardware so I probably won't bother exchanging the phone.

Can you please tell me where you get that HISTORY screen from. Ive checked all menus in settings and I can not find it anywhere.
EDIT... Please ignore my post... I found it...
So, I'm having the same exact problems but i did a log cat to see what might be culprit.
I have narrowed it down to this:
02-08 11:21:51.912 E/IMSFW (415): IIL: Disconnected from '7467' socket
still have no idea what can cause it yet.
also if you switch to 3g it seems it doesn't happen so maybe its a sim problem on verizons lte network end?
11:22:40.029 E/IMSFW (415): ImsSMSInterface: Registration failed, go for retrying if isim nounce present
that's what i found so if anyone can clarify and maybe see if it is really on Verizons end as this is the 4th phone that has had this problem.

Hey fellas, I'm posting in this thread because it relates to the issue I'm facing. Coming from the Thunderbolt, I had no problems holding onto a LTE signal in Atlanta, but with my GNex, the signal just drops a lot (every half hour or so maybe), at work, at the store, wherever. It shows an empty signal bar with a small x, and says 'Searching for Service'.
This seems to happen only when I have it in LTE mode. I switched to CDMA under the 'Mobile Networks' settings window, and it was able to hold on to the 3G signal all day. I am starting to think if it is a LTE sim card authentication issue.
I'm going to VZW to see what I can do (I'm still within the 14-day window).
I'm having the Same issue holding onto a 4g signal in Savannah and Atlanta, cdma only is fine. Let me know what Verizon tells u cause they basically told me to wait for an update

Just came back, basically they said they can't do anything unless they replicate the problem, which they couldn't. (it was a random problem.). They told me to call customer service when I got that issue, so I have to see that at work tomorrow.
I tried a suggestion online where I updated my prl from the 15xxx version to the 52642 version. I did this by creating a contact with the following number
*22899
and dialing that contact. It went through a 'activation' process, with some elevator music, and the signal seems to hold.

To this and post 10, I still have those data issues, but they are much less frequent on the 4.0.2 radio than the 4.0.4.
I got in touch with Verizon wireless online support, and they basically told me to wait till they release a software update. I asked for a new sim card (since I thought it might be LTE authentication issues), and they said it was a software problem, not a SIM problem.
I guess its a wait and see.
Has any of you had problems with your s3 dropping data connection? The phone completely loses data for about one minute and then comes back on its own.
I ruled out a geographical relation since it happened while I was in Miami and now that I'm back in Boston.
Thanks.

I guess not much people, mine is doing this now. Had my phone about a month. Except mine won't come back without restart and even that doesn't work sometimes.
I've noticed this happening as well on Telus with both the S3 and iPhone 5, even with a strong signal.

Yup mine is with full signal too. BUT when I go into a 4G LTE Area I get my data back.
Ya same issue here as well. I just noticed it today on my Rogers sg3. Just basically losing all data and then re-appearing suddenly. Sometimes it requires a reboot as well.
What Rom are you guys using? I'm running CM10 stable but it seems to be a known issue with this rom.
I tried creating a new APN taken from directly from Fido's site but for whatever reason it just keeps reverting back to the default APN.
Some help would be greatly appreciated with this very annoying problem!
Thanks
Hey guys, I just a sprint gnex phone a few weeks back and ran the GNex toolkit v9.1 to unlock and root it this past saturday so I could use a hotspot app for my tablet.
I don't know if this is just a bad coincidence or if I did something wrong..I'm not new to roms and have modded my previous phone (evo 4g) about 50 times, but here's what's happening.
Prior to this weekend I had full signal/bars..Now I can barely get 2..It's mostly sitting at 1 bar and sometimes drops the connection entirely. At the same time, every txt msg I send comes back with an error stating it did not send, however...It does actually go through, twice even. This happens with every text to every person.
I didn't put a rom on it, and I didn't even install clockwork mod...I simply just unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. I did setup google voice afterwards. I can't see how doing this would cause these kind of issues and I haven't called Sprint yet as I absolutely despise their customer service..I'd rather get feedback here first.
The coincidence that I'm referring to is that I'm in Austin, Tx and they're in the process of spinning up 4g LTE towers right now..If by chance they started upgrading my tower this weekend (yesterday & today) then I could definitely see these issues...I walked down about 2 blocks where I do get a full 4g signal, but my txting still had the same issue.
Any ideas or thoughts about my problems?
On one hand, I would tell you that rooting doesn't cause that.
On the other hand, you used a toolkit, so who knows what you ended up doing.
If you haven't changed anything as far as ROMs or mods, then I would suspect you're right about something with the network. The only other thing I can think of would be hardware problems of some kind. That seems a lot less likely though. Sprint does supposedly keep a list of networks that are being worked on. You could check in with them and see if the one in your area is being upgraded.

happened to me.
Reboot your phone and go to about and sprint system update.
update profile.
Idk why but its sometimes happens for no reason.
Make sure you have good connection first.(go outside)
If that doesnt work update prl to make the network find the closet tower to you.

I was trying that repeatedly hoping it would fix it..but it doesn't.
On another note, today when I woke up and rebooted the phone I had full bars on 4G signal..Thought life was good and then about 5 mins later it was back to 1 bar 3G. That's the first time I've seen a 4G signal here in my apartment so I'm hoping it really is just the towers in my neighborhood being converted to 4G right now.
I've rebooted my phone 3 times now and the same occurrence happens..Full signal with 4G for a few mins, and then it drops to 1 bar 3G..Have updated my profile and PRL and tried airplane mode..Only way to get that 4G signal back is to reboot the phone..Won't stay on 4G though.
Hi I've been using this lg p930 first with AT&T and now I've unlocked it and use it with a straight talk SIM card for t-mobile (I was sent a t-mobile sim by straight talk even though I told them my phone is unlocked AT&T).
I'm aware of the issues people are having with rebooting and freezing and am glad to say I don't experience this at all when I'm at home. However I usually visit my sister on the weekends and this phone does nothing but reboot. At my own home, I have great reception, no wifi, and no rebooting. Here at my sisters apt there is virtually no reception except by the side of the apt facing the street where the window is.. There is wifi here. And my phone reboots. It's rebooting as I type this post.
I thought it might be that whenever the phone has disconnected from the carrier and is trying to pick up a signal to reconnect, the phone will reboot..? Since my phone works fine at home I was wondering if anyone had a simpler suggestion besides rooting and installing a custom rom to fix the rebooting which only occurs at my sister's apt? Like a temporary fix? Since the phone works fine any other time I want to avoid any heavy changes.
Thank you... And if anything I suppose ill just deal with the damn reboots when I visit the fam.. Or be the reason why I shouldn't come over to my sisters crappy apt every weekend. :victory::laugh::victory:

What baseband are you on? do you get 3G with t-mobile?
heres what my phone tells me..
android version: 2.3.5
baseband version: P930-MDM9200B-V10j-FEB-26-2012-XX 1
kernel version: 2.6.35.11
build number: GRJ90
software version: LG-P930-V10j-FEB-26-2012
i dont know about my 3g...my carrier is straight talk. i guess they piggy back on t-mobile networks. currently they reduced my data speed to slower than dirt because i play some games on my phone which use a launcher to connect to facebook to play the game and somehow this is too much for their network to handle. they say when i refill with a new service card, my speeds should return to normal unless they monitor excessive use again which they will then lower my data speeds again until the next time i refill. i really couldnt tell you if im 3g or 4g.. right now everything on my phone connects at the speed of dirt.
well, anyway i dont know how to check that. please teach me how and ill tell you..
Why not upgrade to ICS? This may help with reception and stability.
this rebooting only happens when im at my sisters where there is no reception. it doesnt happen whem im at my own apt where reception is good. im not againt upgrading or anything, im sure eventually i will, just wondered if there was a temp fix that wont require a lot of messing with the system.. im usually at my place so if its not broke here then i dont mind leaving it as it is.
I agree with the "don't upgrade unless you need to" sentiment but ICS offers so much more than GB. ICS is also faster and much less laggy based on my personal experience with a Bell P930.
try flashing the V20c baseband. I was getting 1 bar constant, and afterwards I get full now. Other then dead zones. Montana woo hoo

well, i switched carriers from straight talk to t-mobile. i get reception at my sisters now and the phone hasnt rebooted yet. now i wonder if i do upgrade to ics if it will be worse or not... because i do agree gb is a bit laggy and the browser is pretty slow imo.. but now with t-mobile i get the 4g lte symbol ... and im orderin tg an extended battery for this phone bc the battery drains so quickly..
thank you for your helpful suggestions!
First let me apologize if this has been answered somewhere else before, I've read at least 15/20 different threads that had an issue similar to mine but none of the fixes suggested in those threads were of any help. I cannot seem to find anything about LTE working perfectly on someone's phone then just stopping working; every thread I have found pertains to people losing LTE after flashing a new ROM or while traveling to different cities.
I have a SGH-T999L and am located in Chicago where there T-Mobile does have an active LTE network in place. I have had my phone for almost a month now and have had no problems; I have flashed several different ROMs onto it (cyanogenmod, liquid smooth, pacman) without issues as well. Early yesterday morning though my LTE suddenly stopped working. I have not updated the device or changed anything on the phone or ROM. I haven't even installed any new apps in a few days. I first called T-Mobile, they said their network is working properly in Chicago right now. After determining it wasn't a problem with the towers, I tried reflashing the modem for the device (I got it from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987) to no avail. Even though the IMEI was showing up properly I even did a NV restore to see if that would help, which it didn't. I then flashed the stock ROM (UVAMB7) to see if that would fix anything, however the phone is still not picking up LTE. I have even tried doing the diagnostic codes *#197328640# and according to that, the LTE radio is turned on and working properly.
As it is right now, the phone will go through periods where it cannot find any data signal for about 5 minutes at time then HPSA+15 turns on, which also confuses me as Chicago is HSPA+42 market and if I turn on my regular SGH-T999 and set it next to my SGH-T999L, it is able to pick up the HSPA+42 without a problem. Also, the phone hasn't been dropped or anything so I don't think it has to do with physical damage to the antenna or anything like that; literally I had my phone plugged in charging on the table all night and the next day the LTE had just stopped working. I have tried everything I can think of, if anyone can give me any help with this issue it would be very greatly appreciated

You might odin back to root66 and see if that works. If not, triangle away and warranty it out.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
start a downliad, then go to Settings, about device, status. what does it show under network type? roms dont always didplay things as we are used to. this will show your true connection.

When I do that, it shows up as UMTS until I start downloading, then it will connect to HSPA+15 then go back to UMTS once the download finishes. The phone network type used to show as LTE before I had problems, sometimes it would switch between HSPA and LTE while I was downloading or loading webpages but it would still show LTE under network type. Now it seems as though it isn't even connecting to the LTE at all.
i wouldnt worry about the hspa 42 so much. it may be the lte devices dont use it in order to save bandwidth for non lte devices. just a theory.
as for lte, you can try flashing the T999N modem to see if it helps. otherwise id agree with the other suggestion. odin flash your root66 firmware and see if it still happens. if so it may be hardware related.

Thank you, I will try flashing the modem. As for reflashing via odin, I tried doing that and the problem is still there so if flashing the modem doesn't work, I'll have to call Samsung for a warranty repair . I just wish I knew why it randomly decided to fail so I don't accidentally kill any other devices lol
Well, flashing the modem didn't work. Hopefully Samsung will be able to repair whatever is wrong with it. Thank you so much for taking the time to try to help though, I very much appreciate it
it could be something as simple as an antenna becoming disconnected, or something wrong with the radio itself. but once you are full stock, and still having issues it pretty much rules out a firmware/software type issue. Leaving the most likely cause to be one you probably couldnt fix.
just to make sure tmobile was correct, id try to go a few miles away and see if it connects though. just to be thorough.
