[Q] Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with CM10.1 and USB OTG? - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Does anybody know if USB OTG works with Hashcode's CM10.1 ?
I tried Chainfire's USB Host Diagnostics, but negative results (I think), see usbhost.chainfire.eu/?search=181340 .
I used this USB Hub (with OTG), see dx.com/p/cy-gt-037-ri-angled-micro-usb-4-port-usb-hub-card-reader-for-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-i9200-black-200091
Cheers, S

It doesn't work with stock or CM yet.
If you want an external USB device connectd, you will need a powered USB hub. Did you try that with yours?

Sorry, as a newb I'm not allowed to post external links. This is the USB hub I bought.
"CY GT-037-RI Angled Micro USB 4-Port USB Hub + Card Reader for Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 i9200 - Black"
It is powered by sub, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah I saw it.. but did you actually power it?
I've read posts of people do just this and it work for them.

I did plug the power usb cable into my PC. It made the usb hub shine blueishly. My guess that means it is powered.
Can you point me to posts either claiming success or stating it isn't possible? I don't seem to be able to find them on xda.

My guess would be no because in order for that to work there would need to be drivers for android devices and those would have to already be incorporated into your ROM. Can you not just get the HDMI adapter, or do the HDMI dock trick?
no, you can not.
You can not use 99.999% of existing USB devices with Android OS. Personally I find the USB port completely useless. There is no support for anything other than a mouse and memory card reader.

I am afraid HDMI adapter is not for me. I want to use my tab to present stuff using an overhead projector. Usually even if the projector has a composite port the cables that are in the presentors area are a VGA and a 3.5mm cable for sound.

Many OTG peripherals require the use of a powered USB hub as the Kindle needs power assistance in the USB department. The app "Stick Mount" has rendered success with accessing some flash drives. Unfortunately not ALL flash drives are compatible.

i tried that app and nothing happens. it has a diagnostic tool also and it recognizes the flash drive.. but with no success.
if i need external power for a hub, then this entire thing is pointless.

If that app picks it up than a powered USB hub will probably make it work. For example....I tried using an optical USB mouse that was plugged straight into the OTG cable plugged straight into the Kindle. The mouse actually lite up BUT nothing happened besides that. When I obtained a powered hub it worked great using the same OTG cable with hub. What ROM are you using just out of curiousity?
I am using the 4.2.1_r1 AOSP ROM.
the thing is that I don't want to be dependant on elecricity. there isn't a plug every where. thank you for the time spent on my question
maybe should a nexus 7 and forget about it.

Well if you don't want to be dependent on electricity there is a different method people have used for a USB power supply. Here is a Youtube link that should explain it, or you could just get a Nexus 7 lol http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M&desktop_uri=/watch?v=BFEMh0ZYT5M

Only 4gb but I'd prefer to carry around a few on a ring than a powered hub, or that arrangement with the Y cable and the phone charger.
Plug it directly into the otg cable and off you go, I've played 720p video from the flashdrive with several ROMs recently, paranoid android worked great, TWA_priv's 4.2 also works but with some mounting wackiness sometimes.
USB mass storage watcher seems better than stickmount right now IMO.
Would the 8gb cruzer switch work? I am planning on buying an OTG Cable and need to specify.

Sure it will work, but you'll need a wired hub of some sort to mount it, either connected to an outlet or using a Y cable and a battery powered phone charger, which is hassle to carry, finicky to mount and not really OTG. I've never found a drive over 4 gb which was usable just by sticking it into the end of the otg cable, and most drives 4 gb or under don't work either.
The cruzer 4gb is my one and only recommendation I'm afraid.
I know this thread is a little old but just wanted to list the mini attache 16gig flash works with no powered hub.
Downside is that it only works till about 70% of battery. After that its not enough voltage
Plug it into the kindle, then plug in the flash drive.

Can you detail which app you used to mount it? I've tried quite a few of them but stick with USB otg helper and USB mass storage watcher.

Looking for a microUSB to sd card reader, usb slot and microUSB charger port??

Hi,
I saw a plug (green colored) quiet some time ago on xda that would attach to MicroUSB on the phone and on the back end was another MicroUSB for charging along with USB slot, card reader. It used to be under or around $10.
Does anyone have a plug like that, i am thinking of using it with my GNex.
Thanks,
It's called usb OTG.

I was wrong. I ordered an OTG Y-cable and it arrived today. I plugged it into power first. Then I plugged it into the phone and it started charging. Third, I plugged in a USB stick and it mounted (using the help of the Stickmount app).
I then watched a movie from the USB stick and watch the charge level go up 4 percent while watching.
Awesome!
I am on Franco's kernel but I don't think that matters as long as you are rooted and have Stickmount installed.
Edit: This is the cable:

Really nice to run across this! I have a 1TB WD Passport, OTG cable, an Anker external battery, and Nexus Media Importer and they work great with this setup. I had tried a powered USB hub and it worked but this is much better from my perspective - hadn't thought of trying the battery pack.
Interestingly, I also have 2 500GB WD Passports that worked without additional power on my 2012 N7 but they won't work without additional power on my 2013 N7.
Thanks for the post!

yes, im currently on cm10.2 m1(milestone) rom with stock kernal. playing videos straight off hd tends to reboot my device. Let me know if you get similar issues. i find copying the file into the sd storage is the most stable way. hopefully CyanogenMod will come up with an update that corrects this problem

Is it possible to use a USB hub, connect the HDD to the hub, mount the HDD and then connect a SD Card reader to the USB hub, mount the SD card reader and transfer files from the SD card to the HDD??

No. It appears that a single external drive/memory device is the limit (at least on a stock unit).

Yes, and an app like Nexus Media Importer to access it. I'm actually assuming that it will require additional power, like my 1TB WD Passport does - I haven't tried this particular model myself.
ahh right need that app too okay thanks. I will give this a try after I move and settle in.
Clarify cable connection
I don't understand. How do you have it cabled? For example, I have a limefuel 15600mAh battery with a microUSB input (for power) and two USB outputs to power a device. How are you cabling the Passport to the battery and then to the Nexus?

I'm using a different setup, a dual A to Micro-B USB 3.0 Y Cable like this --
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005M0ICG2/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The USB 3 male plug goes to the WD; the male USB 2 power plug goes to the external battery; the other male USB 2 goes to a OTG cable connected to the Nexus 7. I use Nexus Media Importer to access the WD.

Probably are - Amazon was convenient. As for speed, I don't have a way to measure transfer speeds but I do know it is fast and in no way impedes video file viewing direct from the HDD. Using on a laptop, I can see that it does give true USB 3.0 transfer speeds.

You don't really need the Nexus Media Importer app to access external hard drive files.I'm on Cm10.2.0 and I'm using ES File Explorer to access the files. I do get random reboots due to the Nexus overheating say after an hr of video play directly from the HD.

Powered Otg Cable

I got a cable: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301291074104?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
It does either charge ("AC charger", not USB) or OTG (tried many USB sticks) but never both. Is that a limitation of Cyanogenmod 12.1 which my phone is running now? I have seen people mentioning that I might want a custom kernel, is that correct? Or the cable is just wrong?

The description on ebay says "The USB Typa-A Male plug is used to provide external power for connected devices (instead of mobile phone or Tablet)", so it's not really a Y-cable, just acts as a usb powered hub. Anyways if it was a y-cable, you would still need a custom kernel that has the ability to OTG+charge at the same time.

Any idea if CM12.1 has such a custom kernel?
