I'm using a stock Tmo Samsung S4, and over the past few weeks, most of my apps have stopped giving me push notifications. Gmail is the only one that works, but Whatsapp, Friendcaster and Yahoo! don't anymore. They used to work fine, but now they don't notify until I open the app and refresh.
I used to go to a client's site and on their WiFi I could not receive ANY notifications, including Gmail. Now, I don't go there anymore, but it appears something got messed up.
Is this something someone has seen? Any fix?
Are you using a task killer or greenify? If not try clearing the apps data and cache.

I've noticed this randomly too, haven't quite nailed down the issue. Google voice, Facebook, Facebook messenger, and Snapchat all cut in and out for me for notifications

I am not using either. I cleared the app data and cache as you said. Whatsapp started to work, but yahoo still doesn't.

Google Voice never works for me. Even though I have chosen that to be my voice mail, I receive nothing from it - no messages or notifications. I get the stupid Tmo's visual voicemail notifications instead.

This happens to me on 4G as well. There are times I send e-mails from it and people never receive them and there are times I never get them. Then sometimes it works perfect. I switched to a 3rd party e-mail app. It never fails me. I am using Kaiten but its a paid app. Try K9 on the Market. You can make it black themed and it works well for many.

I had this prob few days back, I turned syncing off, then back on. I then reboot the phone and bam! It started working again.
P.S. Under Applications>All. I also cleared data/cache.

Settings->Accounts and Sync. On apps, select All, and choose Gmail, clear cache and data on that one.

I have lost some faith in G-Mail. I don't understand why I can get a 3rd party app like K9, add my G-Mail account to that, and people receive the e-mails faster than using G-Mail itself. If someone can explain why this is, I would appreciate it.

I think it depends on many factors, we all have different apps, different roms, kernels, and also different qualiies of reception.

Can you be a bit more clear? I'm understanding bits and pieces... what I explained over clearing the cache was your answer to your question previous to your last post.

Hello,
The first week I got my GN, Facebook notifications were working like a charm.
Lately they stopped working completly. Both Facebook and Facebook Messenger.
Is there a real push alternative rather than the intrigrated one? They always seem to fail somehow?

It's Facebook's fault, their apps suck.
Logout from the App and log back in and adjust your settings again. Sometimes that fixes it.
Tried logging in and out with no luck
Is anyone else experiensing the same problem?

I'm getting notifications just fine if you go into the app settings you can set notifications within facebook rather than on the phone. alternatively you can sign up for mobile alerts or email notifications on facebook website from your account settings .

Well, I dont like email spamming from Facebook. Thats why I turned them off.
I've set notifications ON only in the app itself. Never seen such settings on the phone.

Lol there aren't any on the phone I just wasn't sure if you thought there were. alternatively you can set up a new gmail account dedicated to your facebook and have notifications pushed there. Personally I just set a filter in my main gmail account 4 anything with the word facebook in the email address to go to a custom facebook label. I like to have access to those notifications in the event that comments are deleted or I need to refer to something. Although this means every time I get a facebook notification it's immediately followed by an email notification.

I've solved that by installing facebook messenger, works like it should within couple secs after a message is posted.
I have my note 3 rooted running stock rom with just a couple of apps disabled frozen such as chat on, s voice, pen up, etc. Nothing that should interfere with the system or anything. But my email app will just force close sometimes Idk why. Has this been happening to anybody else?

Try clearing the data on the email app and the exchange app. Reboot the device and see if that fixed it

I have pinpointed it to when new mail is arriving.force closes 100% of the time.
I think I've found the culprit. I froze the 2 'my magazine' files.
Upon restoring them the email and Touchwiz stopped force closing. If I refreeze them, email FCs 100% of the time when new mail arrives.

I am on Sprint, but have had the same issue--once I defrosted the magazine apps, the issue went away.
Nice!
I have the latest available version of hangouts and it has been said we can start using the SMS integration. I don't see that option anywhere in the app.

Same happened to me, the Play store is still pushing out v.1. Check your version #, 2.0 and above has SMS.
You can download the newest version of hangouts released yesterday here

I'm sticking with Sammy's SMS for now
I like Hangout for Video, and such but for SMS it to me gets mixed up with all the other hangout stuff and I would rather have it separate. For me, I use SMS/MMS WAY more then Hangout, and it's just cleaner to keep it in it's own app. I did try it, worked fine and all. Just like SMS/MMS to be stand along.

I'm the opposite. I use SMS as an alert and rarely use it with other people. I use hangout text all the time. Don't do video much. I'd keep the SMS out of hangout as I prefer it separate.
Is the mms sending on this or does it still hang when sending?

MMS works between google+ accounts, but not between mobile numbers - Hangouts will force-close whenever I attach a photo to a message going to a phone # (as opposed to a hangout contact).
I got mine to work but I noticed when wifi calling dont work but works when on 4g I also downloaded one inverted from darkhorse is the one im using

Seems like if you are in a group message to people on their phones numbers then the messages will go as MMS instead of SMS, When i am connected to WIFI mms does not work hence i have to choose WIFI or group message and i hate it

Your response prompted me to try it out. Really like what I'm seeing and will probably be using it for a while.
What is it that you don't like about Google hangouts? You can setup a Google voice number and text using that #, make wifi or data calls using for google voice number. Google hangouts does everything

Textra is the best app out there IMO. Send and receives pictures like a phone is supposed to (actually shows each picture as opposed to a Slideshow) has delay sending, and many other features. Fair warning though they are moving from a free app to paid. But totally worth it in every way.
Sent from my SM-N910V using XDA Free mobile app
Textra or Google Messenger I think are the two best.
I ended up sticking with Google Messenger because Textra seemed to have trouble with different DPI's which I found a little weird. I think it has a few extra features that make it better the GM if that's not an issue for you.
Agreed. Textra is awesome. I love using the "giphy" attachments.
Though I'm content with the stock messaging app, if I wasn't using it I'd be used Google Messenger. It's nice and clean and I actually like its simplicity

I tried evolvesms on my Note 4 which is running 5.01 but it seems to freeze on the conversation list page. Have you had this problem?
Textra probably is the best but there are a ton of bug reports everyday
