I'm now on my 5th Samsung Galaxy Note 2 replacement from T-Mobile...
The reason for the replacements is; on every one I've had the earphone jack goes out within 6 weeks of every day use. And it's always the right channel that goes out.
But that's beside the point...
On the back of every replacement I get (under the battery) is the white sticker with bar code, IMEI ect. as well as "STA 13.0X" where "X" is a number that has been increasing from 2 to 8 on my latest replacement. (i.e. STA 13.02, STA 13.04, STA 13.08 etc.)
Are these different hardware revisions or something...?
Another thing I've noticed with these phones (starting from a Verizon Note II I had for a few days before returning it and switching to T-Mobile) is that some light sensors work WAY better than others. On the Verizon model it worked perfectly, scaling the screen brightness appropriately depending on ambient lighting. On my first T-Mobile version it was horrible in indoor lighting conditions. It would be too dim in anything but very bright ambient lighting. I don't think it was a software/kernel issue either because I downloaded an app that monitors the sensor and tells you what level of light it was sensing and on the T-Mobile version the sensor would jump all over the place and appeared to be obviously malfunctioning.
Since the 1st T-Mobile replacement about 50% of the phones I've received have had sensor issues and the other 50% have been fine...
My questions are these:
Has anyone experienced similar issues with either their sensor or headphone jack?
Does anyone have any insight into what the STA number signifies?
If this number signifies hardware revisions does anyone have any insight as to what is changing from revision to revision?
Thanks!
There are different revisions and locations of manufacture. For instance my phone is noticeable thinner and lighter then my wife's. I've noticed hers seems to function smoother, buttons have a firmer ckick and yes her sensors seen to work better.
Mine is a newer build then hers which leads me to believe that Samsung went with a cheaper manufacturer for their new supplier.
I noticed this on my Verizon as well before I switched to tmobile

Just received my second One X from amazon UK (first was sent back due to charging issues).
Been getting some weird things with the screen on this one, which I haven't heard of in the other threads. I have a fair amount of pixels on the screen that will flicker white on certain screens, particularly on the pull-down notification. The pixels seem to be roughly distributed along two vertical lines on the screen, and there's about 20-30, although it's hard to tell since they never flicker all at once. The white pixels don't show up in screenshots, so I don't think it's a software issue, although it's possible, I suppose.
They never show up on solid colors as far as i can make out, but i get them on the camera preview and in the notification drawer (seems to be that shade of grey combined with the fine texture that sets it off). Very occasionally I get it on the bubbles live wallpaper. I also get it when viewing screenshots of the notification pulldown, so it seems to be the colour/texture, not the actual window being drawn.
I can't tell if this is a software or hardware issue.. I've done a few reboots and a factory reset, which did absolutely nothing. It's always the same pixels, which suggests hardware to me, but then it's oddly specific circumstances that set it off.
Any ideas/anyone else getting similar issues?
Edit: re-reading your post it may not be what I thought. Info below for the "usual" screen flicker issue.
It's a well known issue that pretty much everyone has. The backlight flickers slightly due to a voltage drain when the CPU is busy, causing whites and greys to turn a slightly warmer "colour" for a moment.
It's fixed in the 1.29.11 (not 1.29.7) update which just rolled out in Europe and should follow in the UK in about 2 weeks. It takes up to 2 more weeks after the update for it to monitor the voltage of your individual screen and learn to compensate so the flicker goes away.
Yeah, it's not the backlight, it's literally single pixels flickering from their correct colour to white.
So I've been through the standard factory reset crap with customer service, and they're recommending I sent it in for repair. Has anyone had any luck with the repair centre (I'm in the UK)?
Not sure if it's even worth sending it back since I'm still not sure if it's a hardware or software issue. If it's a software issue, will they fix it, or will they just turn it back and go "nope, couldn't find anything"?
I have EXACTLY the same issue, but with two pixels only, I'm almost convinced it's a hardware fault because I'm on a custom rom and it's still there, I got mine without a warranty though so I'll have to deal with it, any suggestions other than acceptance?
I have same issue, i change the rom and now its fine. it was almost on 3 or 4 roms, and finally its disappear

Well thank you that's rather comforting to know, fingers crossed
Hey guys.
In the market for the One X. Thing is, I don't wanna get one with the WiFi issue. Is there info somewhere on the serial numbers of the bad batch of phones? Is there any way to know that the one I'm getting is good or not?

As of a tally taken two weeks ago there were 160 people in the Wi-Fi thread that reported their phone was suffering from the issue. If you double it for people with the issue not documenting it in the thread, that's 360 phones out of about 5K owners on the forum. That's less than 10%.
If you look at the pictures of the phone disassembled, the issue appears to be from how the phone is seated in the chassis at the factory. The connectors are on the body of the phone while the antennas they are connecting to are on the chassis. In the Wi-Fi thread, people are told to "press on the back of the phone to see if it affects the Wi-Fi signal." The connectors use dynamic tension vs. springs. Since the part of the phone where the connectors are located wouldn't experience compression under typical use, that's an acceptable design choice. People artificially creating compression to "test" their phones could be causing the problem their testing for. The fix HTC is putting in place is simply spacers to prevent compression; real and artificial (people pressing on their phones). I have an early March-build phone that's been dropped six times and the Wi-Fi's as good today as when I got it. It's better than the i9100 it replaced and a G-Tab 10.1 I’m still using.
In anything mass produced, precision of assembly improves as more are built. So you could make the assumption later built phones are less likely to have defects. You’ll see references to HT23 and the like. The “3” in HT23 signifies “March” and so on. But the design of the Wi-Fi connectors aren't being changed and, based on the number of devices affected, you have a far greater chance of getting a phone with great Wi-Fi than one with a problem. There are plenty of differing opinions so educate yourself and make your own decision.

Thanks a lot! Really appreciate the info.
Has anybody else had any problem with the screen faults on their Note II?
I'm now on my THIRD one, the first 2 developed a very fine grey line going across the screen (left to right in portrait mode, top to bottom in landscape) within hours of being powered up!
both from totally different suppliers and with different build dates, surly I cant be the only unlucky one to have 2 do this?
Any technical boffin who could give a reason for it, could it be something I'm doing wrong? PC sending some too much power when charging, being squashed in my pocket etc etc?
Both where untouched/unrooted etc, Ive attached a picture, looks worse in real and very annoying in movies, or playing fast scrolling games etc.
Im just panicking that its going to happen to my third one now!!
Sorry bro only you afaik.
I dont have it and also no one had reported it before
Yep, this is happening to my Note II as well. I can confirm there is a line that looks exactly like yours.
However, it went away after a while, and then it appears again. This has happened twice already and it's at the exact location.
So I am not sure if that is good news or bad news. I have this unit for less than 2 weeks.
Honestly, looks like a bad TAB connector (the method using to attach the row/column of pixels to the circuit board that tells them what color to be). This usually happens due to years of repeated heating and cooling coupled with physical stress. On a new phone? that is defective.... I wonder if we have more than one screen manu, and one of them is making bad screens.
That's terribly unlucky!
I just checked my GN2, no screen faults at all thankfully!!
I had it on my first note2, exactly what you have there ! And I got it replaced. Now second note 2 and I have not this issue
Hi everyone. I recently got a second Galaxy S4 as a work phone, and my company uses Verizon as their carrier. I have noticed quite a few differences between the phones that are ROM related (mine is T-Mobile obviously), but the ones that get me the most are the screen on the Verizon S4 is significantly brighter for any given setting and the notification LED is brighter on the Verizon S4. So, if they're in auto brightness mode, the Verizon screen is brighter by a noticeable amount in any given lighting situation. If they're not in auto brightness with the slider set to the same position, the Verizon phone is still brighter. I have to move the slider up quite a bit more (a full slider "knob" width at least on my T-Mobile S4) to get them to be relatively equal brightness.
The other thing I noticed is the notification LED at the top is MUCH brighter on the Verizon S4. Mine is easily half as bright for any given color. So, are these features ROM controlled as well? Meaning, could it simply be the ROM is written so that the screen isn't as bright for any given slider position and the LED brightness is reduced by the ROM? I never even noticed this "issue" until I had another one side by side, so that's why I wonder if it was intended to be this way. Everything works, it's just not as bright. I really like the brighter notification LED though...
The other option of course is that my phone has some kind of hardware difference or possibly a defect of some kind. I don't know anyone else who has an S4 to compare it to, so I'm not sure. I tried stopping in at a couple mobile phone stores, but they didn't have working demos. I might try a T-Mobile store this weekend since they are normally closed after I get off work.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has noticed similar things. Thanks in advance!
Bump? Function of the kernel possibly?
Pictures, please.
Is there any way to force the notification LED on for the Verizon phone? The test menus don't work. I'd like to set them side by side and get a picture of each color, plus pictures of the screens where it's most noticeable.
Also, all I have to take pictures with is my Sensation 4G, so I don't know how well they will turn out, but I can try once I figure out the notification LED for the Verizon phone. I have seen how to enable them, but it requires root. Since it's a work phone, this isn't an option.
ok, after nearly 5 years of using, i had have problems with the USB port of my N7000.
It was impossible to get a good power contact during recharging my battery.
So i ordered a replacement part for it. So far, so good.
But after replacing, i have only Edge (G2) and no G3/Umts any longer!
Have compared the new one against the old one twice but with the same result.
So i looked into the WWW and found different replacements with the same problem!!!
It looks like, that it is impossible to get the old original quality.
Ok, ~7$ is not expensive, but anyhow! Now i can charge but not surf in the net.
~34KB/s is 10 times less than with H+:silly:
I think, it seems to be a plagiarism with really bad quality.
So be careful if you will buy some (declared as a "original"!) replacement part.
I'm guessing Samsung (or the distributor) does not make the parts anymore so to keep with the demand there are attempts to create more of it by other opportunistic companies.
When replacing the connector you may have bent the connectors for the antenna or forgot to connect them. Check you motherboard brass connectors's health and the celular antenna's cable if it is connected right.
I think this phone being forgotten as so many dev leave and for the part replacement might be non ori at all. Within 5 years I got 4 times replacement for USB port & 3 times internal spraker, normally I let the phone repairman do at phone shop nearest my home. Lately they give discount for regular customer. Speaking about regular customer it also means this phone has nearly R.I.P as I always change the same part of replacement. Last week the 4th times USB replacement. What to do as I am unaffordable to buy new phone.
What are you doing with your phone bro. For all this time I have replaced the usb connector once and the display and this is my only repairs for this phone.
I ran into the same issue.
To my knowledge, there are at least 4 different revisions of the USB charging PCB. Some are incompatible with the device you own, because of regional differences between devices.
I had to buy two, one from china, one locally from a smartphone repair shop owner (cool guy!), as the china one didn't work. Only 1 or 2 bars GPRS when standing right next to the cell tower.
With the one bought locally, I have worse reception than with the original part, but it is very much acceptable and works in at least 90% of all areas I'm in.
Both replacement parts have different model numbers than the original one that was built into my note originally. Some sellers have pictures of another model number, so it suggests, that there at least 4 versions out there.
To further elaborate on my findings:
Two times so far, I experienced one very weird and almost esoterical bug.
This happened both times after reasonably long uptimes on bauners NightOwl 7.1.2 ROM (some version released early 2018).
I have the reception indicator once in the status bar at the top of the screen and one time in the notification area. For some weird mysterical reason, it can happen, that both of these indicators develop their own interpretations of the signal. It might happen, that the status bar will say e.g. H and the notification area will report something like E. The other way around it might happen as well. Telephony is not possible in such situations.
It is very weird and some online searches suggest, that this might be the note itself, not the software. It seems like several of samsungs devices are prone to this problem, not only the n7000. A reboot solves the problem, but I wanted to point this out as I thought the notification area signal reception indicator would merely mirror the status bar reception indicator, that is definitely not the case, so you might want to check for both signal indicators to be more certain about your issues. I'm sure nobody expects this, so a quick heads up.
