I know there are hundreds of these threads but i was unable to find the information that I'm looking for. But my guess is there is no real answer to my question. But i've been wrong before. Please bear with me
Here goes.
I want to know how to maximize the battery when USING the phone. I dont care about wakelocks or sleep time etc.
I am interested in getting to max out the usage time.
For example when I stream radio and surf the net and text. My phone lasts 2 hours with max birghtness. That seems really short.
- I've done all that I know to minimize power consumption with turning off sync, settings, etc.
- I have tasker starting and stopping data during screen on/off.
- I have the phone UV and under clocked.
- I Limit my phone to 3G only, with no LTE
- Also signal is not a problem since I can stream and surf without an issue. With areas with poor reception. I don’t even use the phone really
-*I also have all the chats turned on include facebook, whats app, etc. Once again, phone is awake. and I'm concerned with its ON screen usage battery time.
- I even have the second CPU setting on conservative. (when set on ondemand it drains even faster)
But during usage, its terribly short! What can I do to prolong the life?
The battery was always like this and I dont believe its defective. With regular use, checking phone (once or twice every hour) can easily last a day. But during multitasking usage I notice the drain to be 49-59% per hour according to battery spy.
I know I can uninstall battery spy/BBS to conserve battery. But I'm looking for what some are reporting (4-5 hours of on screen usage time).
Looking for some guru-like advice Thansk in advanced
Personally, I get the best battery life out of the stock kernel of whatever particular ROM I'm running. I stick with tw based ROMs, and I greenify almost everything! I consistently get between 5 and 6 hours of "screen on" time with the stock battery.
You never said what ROM and kernel combo you're using. I know that I get 3 to 4 hours of screen time depending on the apps used and the connections utilized (wifi, signal strength, LTE or H+, etc). 2 hours definitely sounds low though. I'm using stock debloated ROM right now and stock kernel. I have not modified voltage or clocking in any way (yet).

I didnt really notice any improvements on the KT747 vs stock kernel.
I greenify everything except for the messaging apps. But then again, when my screen is on, i want ot be using those apps.

You're doing heavy multitasking!! It's going to eat the battery, sorry, but no one's going to post a magic "cure" to increase battery life! Buy an extended battery... Problem solved.

Websurf and radio or text and radio is just 2 tasks occuring.
Well I can say that running on Wifi, I can get regular battery life about 4-5 hours of use and over 20 hours of idle time.
The radio seems to be the main culprit, so the question is..... what can be done about that?
I'm asking because
- I flashed diff modems and seems to yield same results
- other S3 from my friends seems to last longer with multitasking
- signal....strong or weak seems to produce same drain.
Battery?

I've had the same problem. I couldn't get the same battery life as others I know. I always turn my GPS off if I didn't need to use it. Google now seemed to kill my battery so I stopped using it. But, the one thing I did notice is that the battery stats can be a little deceiving. If I left my phone off the charger and didn't use it for 10 hours and then started to play a game, it would look like I was getting good battery life as I would have about 60% battery left. Now if I played the game right after unplugging my phone, and then after the same 10 hours I'd be around 40%. Hopefully that makes sense.
One thing that I did do to overcome this was get an extended battery. It does add a little bulk, but now I can use my phone like I want and not have to worry about my phone dying on me at night. I can even forget to plug it in and still have battery the next day. For me I got the hyperion 4200 battery. The Zero Lemon seemed just to big for my tastes.
The other thing is also the ROM. At times I have found the same ROM but a different version exhibited different results. All ROM's offer something different so it is a give and take situation.
I hope this helped.

Yea my gps only turns on when my map turns on via tasker. I also dont have google now on.
Ya i understand what you mean on the percentages.
Ive seen people wiht great battery life, i wanted to try to acheive that without an extended bat. I was wondering if there was somehting that was obvious, or some radio battery drain fix. (I even tried only 3G, and still drains)
Thanks

It's a little hard to compare, but right now I'm on a 4.3 ROM and the battery life has been exceptional. Otherwise the next one that has been closest for me in terms of battery life has been Dandroid. Also, it's hard to judge a ROM after a day.
I guess I should have asked if you have tried or have any interest in a custom ROM.

I've had a hard time getting really good battery life from the stock ROM. At best using greenify, I could prolong it a bit. If you are interested in a stock ROM with some tweaks, I always suggest S3Rx, or Dandroid if you want a slimmed down version without the bloat.
You can always try the power save mode as that does seem to help some, but you may experience some lag.

Ive frozen most of the bloat, greenified everything, plus I unclocked and under volted it, so any lag I would feel from power safe wont affect me since i believe power save throttles to 1350 ish .

Let me start off with the good in this rant. This device is BEAUTIFUL and has A LOT of potential. Considering i just rooted it, it is even more fantastic BUT (there is always a "but" in life) here are my issues that i PRAY would go away. For some odd reason, though i have done everything i can to prevent it from happening, the battery life is just terrible! And here is the mind blowing part: My brightness is always at about 15-30 percent, my automatic sleep is at 15 seconds, i am never on 4G, NFC is off and my GPS is almost, always off. I recently learned that having a lot of black (Wallpaper, themes or simply a black display) going on prevents the display from eating up battery, therefore i've blackened what i use most (MMS, Gmail, Instagram and of course a black wallpaper) but after all of that, the battery still tends to suck major ball sack (sorry for the vivid image). If you must know i am using an AOKP rom, Jelly bean. I absolutely love the rom.
On behalf of that rant ^ .. Is there anything anyone could/would suggest i do in order to have a better experience with battery? Maybe a different rom that revolves around better battery life? Anything that i am missing to prevent battery from draining so fast? AM I THE ONLY ONE GOING THROUGH THIS?!
Last but not least, what gets me going and makes me want to punch something is the fact that my phone constantly, CONSTANTLY heats up for NO REASON (i'm assuming theres an actual reason but i have no idea what it is). After a full charge, i'd unplug the device and couple mins in after browsing web for like 60 seconds and texting, it'd start burning on the top of the screen and the back where the camera is. What is that all about?
And on behalf of that second rant ^ .. is there a solution for that? AM I THE ONLY ONE GOING THROUGH THIS?! lol

Check out what my battery looked like after a few mins from unplugging it. Screen, 67% ??????
Believe it or not... I had a battery go bad already on me. Now i was short charging it and stuff like that.. but still. The early builds weren't as efficient as this one is. You might try a new battery. Or the oem extended one. I have had good luck with both routes. Oh, and i'm stock.
Lots of battery drain and a hot phone means that it's trying to do something. Looking at your screenshot, you're not having any signal problems, which would lead me to believe it's a rogue app. What was your total screen on time during that 48 minutes?

i honestly don't remember, i THINK it was probably 32 mins because thats what i see every time i see the battery that way. If that makes any sense.
Which kernel are you running with that rom? I had a JellyBean rom with a kernel that increased overall, but my phone would often heat up and battery life was not the best. Changed roms and kernel and everything is cool now.

32 minutes of screen on being 29% of your battery. That makes roughly 110 minutes of screen on for the entire battery. Running a stock battery? I never did, but I think people have said 2 hours screen on is the low end for a normal battery. I could be wrong, though.

Or the high end. I got mine as a replacement device for the Droid Charge, so I had to order a battery and back cover when they offered it to me. Since VZW had a 50% off sale on the 2100mAh battery and back, I went with that. So I've literally never used the standard OEM battery with the phone.
Try going to this link: http://minooch.com/franciscofranco/Galaxy Nexus/JB/Jelly Bean/
and downloading "franco.Kernel-r225-384GPU.zip" flash it in recovery like you would a normal rom. Franco's kernel is extremely stable and works magic for good battery life. Should also resolve your overheating issue. If not, I'd suggest a full wipe and installing a different rom.

I normally wipe cache, not sure if it's required. But yeah, it's not a new rom or anything, just different kernel to test out and see if the kernel is what was causing your battery issues.
I'm using the jbsorcery beta with the lean kernel and under clocked with the modded voltage and this is heavy usage on Facebook and texting and about 30 min on the phone I have about 2hrs 45min and im at 80%

I'm just wondering if there's any known methods to increase the battery life without sacrificing performance. I know the basic stuff like turning off Gps, Wifi, Data, etc. when not needed but is there anything else I can do to prolong the battery life? I'm currently running the wanam lite rom with trininty's alpha 7b kernel. A couple of people reported great battery life with this combo but I'm only getting a little bit better than stock battery life.

Yeah, The rom is based off of stock H2 and is supposed to have some battery tweaks to make it last longer. All of the people said battery was good using this combo and 1 person said it's been 1 day 16 minutes, and they had 26% left but they didn't post the usage.
Ok this is with the stock rom. Heavy usage by my means any way. It was on the charger for a few mins here and there. But really not enough to show real battery increase.

The best way to determine battery life (not I played a game for a little, surfed the web over 4G, called some, texted all day) is to take a screenshot of your Screen On time, and overall time since charging. Otherwise, your statements are pointless.
If u have a rooted device u should try the highonandriod Rom it dies have better battery life than stock

I'm very happy with Wanam Lite for now, it's so far the smoothest stock rom I've flashed and I'm eagerly awaiting the next update, so I don't really plan on flashing anything else for now. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll definitely give it a shot when I'm looking for another rom to flash.

Don't use the phone. The screen will almost always be your biggest power draw. Screen-on time is relevant because if you have the screen on for three or four hours you aren't going to see battery life that is any better.

Your right, it is relevant when comparing, but I'm not comparing anything here just looking for tips and tricks. I looked at battery stats when I compared the stock battery to the rom battery and recorded both stats on heavy use. If you want statistics, I got 9h 38m of battery use, internet and netflix took up 31% battery consumption, games took up 23%, phone calls and texting took up 12%, and the other 34% is basically screen off time. These were the stats from when I tested it on the Wanam Lite rom. I'm not confused as to why it only lasts about 9 and a half, hours as you can see I was constantly on the phone when I was testing it.

Well not only were you watching a video (I assume, instead of just browsing) Netflix, you were streaming. That probably did a number on your battery. I know I cannot stream Netflix for very long if I want my phone to last through the day. Also games, things that will ramp up the processor, etc while using the screen will tax your battery more than usual.

Yeah, this isn't my everyday use, nor would I do this if I was trying to maximize my battery life. This was purely for testing the battery life on heavy usage and I found that it was only a little bit better when compared to stock. I'm in no way complaining, I think Wanam has done a amazing job with the rom. The stability is great, speed is comparable to JB roms, and battery is a lot better. Unless used heavily as shown above, then it's only slightly better then stock which is kind of odd but makes sense. I was just wondering what all a person could do to maximize their battery life, that's all.

No worries! If you have trouble with idle battery drain, something like Juice Defender will help a lot if you're going to have the phone idle for extended periods of time. Other than that, all I can think of is underclocking (I run at 1350), and sometimes overclocking your min-CPU speed can help as well. The thought behind this is is that the CPU will be able to finish tasks faster, even if slightly, and then be able to go back into deep sleep. I know a lot of people on the Galaxy Nexus forums run 700min, 1000max because of this.

Thanks, I actually didn't know that, I also heard undervolting can increase battery life and reduce the battery/phone heating up but someone said that it can it will have a major effect on the CPU, not sure if it's true or not.
I hear it all the time... Does this rom provide good battery life? How's the battery life? Why is my battery life suck? So; it may have been done already somewhere; but I figured after watching and logging my own battery life, I could really help some others. I'll section this out; no specific order at all.
ROM: No matter how many times I look at a ROMs thread, I get to see a multitude of "How is the battery life" posts. You know it, I know it, and we all know it. Truth is; after using plenty of ICS roms out there; most of them have similar battery life. Currently I'm running the Blu Kuban rom, and I get just as good battery life as I do with most other touchwiz based roms. To each rom their own. Read up on the rom itself before you go blaming the rom for battery life. I've noticed the JB builds aren't the best with the battery, but we must remember those are usually noted for having bad battery life. Either way, most of the ROMs I've used personally perform rather similar in actual battery life.
Kernel/Governor tweaks: I can't stress this enough. Governor's and Kernel Thread. That thread will teach you more than anything you want to know about kernel and governor tweaks. Some of these governors can send your phone to absolute battery immolation, while others can set your phone up to last 2x as long. I prefer the more conservative approach and end up with a ton of battery left at the end of the day. While these settings are important, the most important is yet to come.
APPS. I can't stress this enough. I used a quite a few different setups to find what all really uses battery, what doesn't, and what I should to to maximize my own battery. For those of you who don't know me at all, I work ten hours a day, and I used this time frame to measure the battery usage while it's sitting in my car for ten hours. I have a Trexcell 3800mAh battery, so it's roughly 2x the power as the stock battery.
What's the number one usage on my device? NOTIFICATIONS! All of those apps that automatically feed their greed by getting updates from the servers or whatever. Facebook, Hotmail, Tapatalk, and EVEN just the gMail app could drain 10% of my battery in ten hours. Let me show you my findings.. These are the normal apps I use that can automatically update over certain time frames.
Hotmail
Tapatalk (Xparent Red version)
gMail
Facebook
Now if they all automatically update on the stock settings, ten hours of work will mean I'm coming back to a phone with only 75% battery. With only 4-6 hours of deep sleep! That means these apps are waking my phone up to do whatever they want for quite a while. With all of them set to be manually updated; I come to 95-97% battery life. That's quite a stretch in a difference you know?
So, I tested each with the others off and here is what I found. (I tested for three days, wrote my results for each day, then switched to a different app)
Hotmail set to update hourly would leave me with about 90% of the battery at 4:30. Average deep sleep times were in the 8-9 hour ranges.
Tapatalk was setup stock for 15 minute updates. I'd lose at least 10% on the battery every day! Deep sleep however would range in the 8.5-9.5 hour range.
gMail was set to update hourly and would leave me with 95% each day with only keeping the phone awake for 30 minutes on average.
Facebook updates are odd; since they don't happen all the time. So I had a good friend post on my wall three times a day and noticed that it would eat a LOT of battery, usually 10-15% and keep my phone awake for about 30 minutes a pop.
Now I must note, for my tests I had almost nothing installed on the phone aside from the apps listed and the basic apps available in the blue Kuban rom. For the tests, I set google voice to do not disturb so phone calls and the like wouldn't be an issue.
With all four of the apps set to default updates however (no messages on facebook aside from one day), the battery life ranged from one day being 67%, second day ended with 74% and the third day left me with 72%. That's a LOT of battery for just sitting in my car.
After these findings, I've switched all my apps to update only when I manually refresh them, and I'll tell you what, my battery life has never been greater. I literally come home with 95% battery on average and can sit and play on my phone almost all night without charging until it's nightly stay on the charger.
Just some other tips I've learned along the way.
Wifi is a battery slaughterer if it's not connected. Driving around the city and having the wifi detect all kinds of networks is just battery slaughter. So, my rule of thumb now is, when I leave the house the wifi goes off. It's true that wifi uses less battery than 3g and 4g, but when you're picking up random networks and the radio is searching through them, it's just no good for the battery.
Brightness, it's a key. I can't stress this enough, if you don't need 100% brightness and want better battery life, turn that screen brightness down to an acceptable level.
As an ending to this short but sweet little tidbit of information, I'd like to share why I wrote this, did all this testing, and why it mattered to me since I have an extended battery. My phone is my link to the world, my family, potential jobs, and just my favorite handheld entertainment device. Me and my fiancee` both have the E4GT, and I have the extended battery. She has the stock battery and it doesn't last long at all for her. So my plan now is to work with her on her battery life, and give her this extended battery. I won't need it since I literally have to try to get to 50% battery life with it. I usually end up plugging my phone in for the night at 65-75% battery. I just figured I'd share this with people on the forum as maybe a different approach to saving some precious battery. If you like it, tap the thanks button. If you have any ideas to better this, let me know!
How's battery life on this ROM

Just like to add for people to check their batteries lol...these stock batteries that come with the phone don't last all that long..a lot of these batteries go bad quick and need to be replaced (a simple spin of the battery will tell you if you need it changed)...and for a lot of people to stop constant deep charges and to charge when needed instead of pushing the battery to low critical levels

I will also add that if you're going to try and mess with settings such as I/O or over/under clocking do your research so you don't jack your phone trying to save a battery. I say this from experience lol

I understand leaving your phone on all day long so you can see texts and missed calls and stuff but why not just turn off your data during the day instead? I use this widget when I am in a poor signal area, don't need data, or sometimes overnight https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.data.enabler&hl=en Simple and effective and you can let your apps sync for times when you are using the phone
Undervolting also helps a little
Step 1. Install CM10 or ParanoidAndroid.
Step 2. PROFIT!
Battery life between stock and AOSP is night and day.
The questions about battery life are there because not every kernal is the same. Especially ones that are early in development. Pretty much every AOSP rom will defer some amount and even more so if 1 of them is in its early stages.

What most people need to know is no matter what tweaks are applied.. YMMV. It's all down to the user.. Best way to save battery on your phone.. Turn it off!!!! lol But I agree with the things posted. I'm always messing around to find the best settings.. So far i've gotten over a day (1d 3 hours) with over 2 hours screen on with my setup. Which is great for me. But all in all, it's how i use my phone.

What do you mean spin the battery? As in literally put in on a counter and spin it?

Yes.. If it's spins that means it's bulging.. And that equals a bad battery

I wanted to share some of my thoughts and experiences with battery life on my E4GT.
On GB I had great battery life...As soon as I got on any version of ICS I started having battery life issues. I eventually learned that my battery was buldging so I ordered a new one. Once I got my new battery, I thought life would be grand...NOT so much!!
Over the last month or so and ROM after ROM, tweak after tweak and even going straight stock I figure it was actually the device itself that was the problem...AND it was the problem from the day I got it last Dec. From reception to battery life to buzzing camera.
Something I've seen as is that "freezing" an app doesnt always disable it...I've had to completely uninstall something to get it to not run...even though its frozen and all of its startup references are disabled in Autostarts.
I dont care for the stock browser, but I've learned that 3rd party browsers such as Firefox and Chrome continue to run and use CPU even after exiting...Now, FIrefox has an actual "Quit" option while chrome doesnt...So if you Quit out of Firefox its ok, but unless you close your tab in Chrome it just keeps on chugging battery power.
A TEP replacement phone is what finally resolved my issues!!
I've only had my new phone for 2 days now, but I'm already seeing better battery than before, plus better reception and a camera that doesnt buzz.
I've got Agats ROM with the BluKuban 1.8 Kernel. This Kernel has a few more options enabled so I use that but I like how Agat put his FI27 ROM together.
Thanks for reading...
Found this one to be very helpful (written for the nexus but some does apply to our device):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599025
Also if you have a newer version of maps, make sure to go to settings-location settings and disable location reporting and location history, these two kill your battery when turned on.
I have cm10 stable on my galaxy s2 sgh-t989 and the battery life has not been good so I wanted to trying flashing another kernel. Can anyone tell me what kernels will work and if anyones had a good experience improving battery life by flashing a different kernel. Any information is appreciated. I haven't been able to find much about the t989 and flashing kernels. Thank you!
What's up with these threads in the wrong places every so often? It's like no one reads the rules now-a-days...
And also, don't just say that your battery life is bad without giving members a time of how long the battery lasts. We don't want to guess how long your battery lasts.

sorrry, I guess I should have posted this in Q/A ... but after about 2hours I'm already almost at 50 percent.
And is most of the time on standby or on heavy usage?

I would say in between ... my biggest question was really about the kernels. I can determine for myself what is good battery life with experimenting with flashing different kernels, among other things. I'm just looking for a bit more information on flashing a kernel, ones I can, ones I can't, etc.

Same here. I cannot get my phone past the 5 hour mark if I am using it. If I just leave it next to me alone, it lasts 7. If I have wifi on, however, it lasts 15! My guess is how strong the network is and whether or not you have an exchange account synced affects it. Another thing is, after a full charge your phone running CM10 will refuse to enter deep sleep for some reason, making for some very disappointing battery life. Rebooting it every time you disconnect a charger helps somewhat, but that's hardly practical: with a battery life this bad, that makes rebooting every hour since I keep it plugged in everywhere I can. I am resigned to lugging an external battery everywhere I go and hate every minute of it.
As for another kernel, don't bother. Battery life has sucked for me with every last rom and kernel combo I have tried, including stock. Numbers have been pretty much the same, and there are no wakelocks on it. What another kernel did manage to do is make my phone really hot and really slow, as well as reboot whenever it feels like it. Phone becomes utterly unusable.
Kernel won't help you. You are not solving one problem, you are solving several : radio, deep sleep and demand for data.

dang, ok. Thanks for the info. I'll stick with cm10 and its stock kernel, see if I can't tweak anything to get better battery life.
Get an extended battery I found one on eBay that increases battery from 1850mah to 2400mah without that ugly hump add on to the back.

By the way, I was referring to the current crop of custom kernels for CM10. I wrote it as a general statement and I didn't mean it to be.
There used to be one kernel called KKO. If it gets ported to CM10, get it. Your battery life will still suck, but you will have a slightly snappier phone and more governors to play with. You can squeeze maybe an extra half-hour from the phone this way. Insignificant, I know. Also, the extended batteries are all sacrificing something: either NFC functionality, or the slimness of your phone (some require a custom back cover), or both. In the end, when you do the math, it adds about 2 hours of runtime to your phone: you are still running from charger to charger. The external battery gives me an additional ~7 hours of heavy use, but is a big phone-sized object tethered to my phone with a USB cable. I look like a suicide bomber with a wire running between my pockets. Not ideal, not by a long shot.
Hi,
This question is for anyone using the latest CleanRom on their Note II. Just wondering if your average battery drain is around 4-5%/h. I use BetteryBatteryStats. I also check the Battery section under Settings. The most battery life I have been able to get is 12 - 15 h with 1-2h screen time. At this point, the battery is at less than 10%. Is this normal ? I thought I remembered getting better life from older versions of CleanRom. I know these numbers are never achievable on any AOSP rom that I have tried. Just wanted to see what everyone's experience is with battery life. Just post any thoughts!
Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate your time!

Just like anyone else, it all depends on what kernel you're on and what apps you have wakelocking. I've been using Clean 5.0 as my daily for months and the battery life lasts me throughout the day until I need to sleep at which point I plug in... but sometimes, I'm running into fast battery drain due to some apps going nuts on me or when Bluetooth is trying to link from a long distance (where the phone would heat up and drain like mad... btw this only happened to me twice in many months). After a reboot, it usually clears up and after a recharge, I'm back to 14 hours with 20% left at night. I'm not one to be anal about my battery drain if it lasts me until I sleep (because I have NEVER had a smartphone that would last me that long without plugging in... in fact, barely half the day would be when my device would need to be fed).
I'm using Perseus' latest with a few screen tweaks, no CPU or power tweaks, using Facebook constantly, Pulse, SMS/MMS, camera throughout the day, Next 3D launcher with all the fun animations running, YouTube, Pandora when driving (so my Bluetooth is on constantly)... let's just say I'm a heavy user. When my kids get a hold of my device, they run a bunch of games and drain around 10% by the time I get it back.
I am happy with the battery life on my Clean Rom 5.0/Perseus Note II. I won't fuss about it as long as it lasts longer than half the day because that is what I was used before upgrading.
