Battery life stock 4.1.2 vs. 4.2 2 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Considering getting one of the latest rooted ROMs, but only if the battery life is improved. Anyone know of they bare better than stock 4.1.2?
Thanks

Any rom can be great because the rom itself really has not much bearing on battery life at all. What's going to impact battery life is kernel, user setup and how you use your device.

Ok. So are the 4.2.2 kernels better in terms of battery life?

This! More than anything, that line right there. My wife keeps asking me why her battery life is terrible and mine is amazing. I've got both phones on the exact same ROM (mrom), same setup, but she can barely get through the day, whereas I plugged in last night before bed and I was at 68%. I keep telling her it's facebooks fault...she's convinced I just hate facebook. That's beside the point...

It is Facebook's fault if using the app. I use mobile website with no issues and no battery drain.

There are options to fix this issue with apps like that. Facebook is probably the worst with 20+ processes running in the background. Greenify is a great app to deal with those issues.

I understand but you have to realize people use their phone differently. I don't notice any difference I still pull 5 hours of display over 16 hours overall on WiFi. And about 2.5 on sucky 3G.

How to conserve battey life?

My battery is dying faster than ever. I am on stock rooted JellyBean. My battery dies within four hours and right now i am streaming pandora and the phone is hot.
Could it be that I have a ton of apps on my phone? This did not happen before. I have about 350 apps:what: installed. Lol please do not judge me lol

Jesus Christ 350? That's a lot of apps running in the "background"
Is that all you do is listen to pandora? Because I'm just purely stock JB (not rooted) and my phone last 2 days without being charged and I stream pandora as well.
I honestly get better life when my phone isn't rooted. Very weird I know but I think I do anyway
But I do know a lot of battery saving tips..

As with most phones, apps in background will kill battery, Screen on/brightness.. Times of no signal. Things of that nature.. When rooted i usually set background processes to 1 or 2 running at most.. Sign outta Gtalk (It's an auto sign in), Notifications (FB, and such) off (unless you really want on) Sync durations to longer intervals (Emails and such) i usually set mine to 4 hours or more, weather sync as well.. Those things will help improve life some what as well. No i don't have the S3 yet, Currently on an S2 (S3 comes Sat) but these are common things across the realm that will help.

Try using WiFI when you can more often, it actually consumes less battery than 3G, also download advanced task killer and only allow important apps to stay active when not using the phone, my battery life is easily 8-hrs even playing Internet Radio most of the day.

I use my phone as usual reading emails I have push mail on always and also i have facebook checking in every hour and also a voicemail app checking in every 30 minutes, I browsed the web a bit googling information. Im not much of a talker so talk time would be low (Its 16 minutres and 4seconds). Also the place I work in has very varied reception some places being completely 0 bars no service to some areas giving 4 bars but mostly low reception.
This is all to give an idea of how I used my battery. Im sure if I had it lying in a corner with data off and not using it all it would probably last a week.

I, personally, don't focus on battery life at all. I run Bluetooth all day, listening to my music, play games on it during my lunch hour and other times throughout the day and send texts/emails off and on all day, and it's down to about 40% by the time I leave work on a normal day. That's unplugging at around 7:30AM, and leaving work at about 5-5:30PM, so that's about 10 hours mid-heavy consistent usage.
To me, as long as I get my full day out of it, I'm perfectly content with it. I don't need my device to be a battery warrior, I need it to be a power beast and do what I want it to do, when I want it to do it. I personally dislike apps like Juice Defender and those that disable radios and data on me. I also don't like using CPU scripts to limit the CPU, undervolt it and all that. To me, it just seems contradicting to buy a powerhouse like the S3 and then strip away it's best and most powerful features. I also don't like the small influx of bugs that arise when you start doing things like disabling data and limiting the CPU/voltage. I like my smartphone to be as smooth as possible, all the time, without any hitches/bugs.
I'm a very heavy user and rely on certain notifications as they are sent out, so extending the battery by an hour or two is the most I could hope to gain by using these apps/scripts, and the level of frustration that come with them when I get syncs late or things are sluggish isn't worth it, imho.
Don't take that the wrong way, I'm not saying they are bad apps at all, nor are the CPU scripts completely pointless. I would give them a high rating if asked, because they do their functions well. I'm just saying they don't work for the way I use my device.
2nd day on Goodness 7.03 with the stock kernel, considering my average use it's pretty sweet by the end of the day.
P.S. loving the goodness, has to be tied with wicked sensations for #1 rom in my book

Turned off diagnostics how does that affect battery life? And that usage was on 4g just got home and turned on WiFi. GPS is always off. Anything else?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Turning GPS and WIFI off makes no difference. Those draw no power unless they're in use. WIFI only passively looks for a signal when it's on (every 30 seconds and gps is only active if an app uses it. Juice Defender will cause your battery to drain faster too.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
My battery life takes a dive when leaving GPS on all the time I don't know if it has something to do with jelly bean or not? It also keeps the phone awake, thus definitely using more battery.

So many devs would like to have a talk with you...
T-Mobile Galaxy S 3, stock and rooted.
Actually the 4G radio uses more battery than wifi. Wifi can turn itself off after inactivity, having apps syncing all the time if you have it on will drain battery immensely. Mainly because it's suppose to be sleeping yet it still running and working and those apps will have a great time doing that. also depends how long you had phone, I have read batteries tend to drain faster after about 5 to 6 months of use.

Ever since Jelly Bean (cm or tw) battery life just isn't what it was on ics I was pulling 20 hour runs with 4 hours of screen time with ics, now I can barely get 9-10 hours with 2 hours of screen time.. It's almost like I'm afraid to use my phone because it'll die.. Very frustrating ik. Hopefully Google addresses this issue in android 4.3 (presumably key lime pie)
Until then, turn off Google Now, and maybe try to pinpoint some random app possibly causing wake locks and not letting the phone sleep properly (with the use of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 )
Also, I highly recommend checking out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969741

I know you said you don't plan to root, but if you're looking for some real results you may have to..I'm talking about flashing a new rom/kernel. If you do decide to go this way, I recommend a debloated and slimmed down tw rom with lean kernel.

Check the battery stats for "gpsd". Mine started draining after updating to 4.1.2. It appears (for me at least) that the Samsung "find-your-phone-if someone-steels-it" was behaving badly.
If this is the case for you. Switch the service/function of and notify Samsung.
How many hours do you get when your battery is draining fast?
My stock phone started to drain fast as well. Within 6 hours unplugged I see myself having only 60 percent remaining with barely an hour screen on time. I tried to narrow it down to a rogue app but it seems the OTA was more plausable and easier to blame lol
Now back to using Jedi again.
