[Q] Want to Try a Rom... - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Noob and want to try a Rom. A long time ago, I used Cy-Mod 7. Nervous about battery life, I reverted to stock. Having updated today to 4.1.2, I rooted devise using Causal Root. I have GooManager installed. I want to try a different ROM but still preserve battery life and performance (like everybody I suppose!). Any tips?
I'd love to be able to tether, too.
So...which one and how do I do it? (GooManager??)
Thanks in advance.

Head over to the Android Development Page and check out Quantum v1.15. It's a super solid rom made by a great developer. It's based of CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) and it really stable and has superb battery life. Tell them I sent you! :highfive:

Thanks. How do I install? My Galaxy s3 is rooted - running 4.1.2. As noted earlier, I do have GooManager installed. I don't have any backup software on the phone (though I'm not terribly sure there is anything I need to backup - given my contacts, email, etc., are backed up server and apps are backed upon Google Play).
Thanks!!!!

Any helps? I want to install custom rom (maybe kernel?) but I have no idea how to begin. As noted earlier, it is rooted (using Causal), running stock and I have GooManager on it. Aside from this, I'm lost. Thanks all!

If you're still "lost", then I suggest u do a lot more research/reading before flashing anything to get up to par on everything! Also, I wouldn't use goo manager to flash anything, either download to PC and transfer to phone, or download directly from the phone over WiFi, and flash in recovery. A little reading goes a long way, and will hopefully prevent any issues and need to start new threads stating this doesn't work, or that doesn't work. Good luck!!

Wildfire S : Backup, Root, Unroot & Best Rom

Hi Team,
First of all i would like to thank each of you'll for sharing your knowledge & helping all individuals who get stuck.
I am a new member in this forum as well as new to rooting. I have read few rooting threads & am excited too to get additional space in my phone.
I am using the phone for more than a year & now my apps list is growing. But the sad part is i have to do away with one app to install the new one as the phone is always out of space.
HTC Wildfire S
Location : India
Android Ver : 2.3.5
HTC Sense Ver : 2.1
Software Number : 2.26.720.3
I request if anyone can help me in getting the below questions answered or can guide me to respective link where i can get answers:
1.How to backup the phone.
2.In case if i need to unroot & get back to the same stock rom, how do i do this.
3.Which is the best stable rom that runs all the applications.
4.My daily use includes: Camera, Camcoder, Internet, Internet pass through, bluetooth. Any stable rom which do not have issues with these applications.
5.Which one is better, WildChild Ver 3, CynogenMod or other, please help with the version also.
6.I wish to root the phone & install a custom ROM, however there should always be a way to go back & undo, as i cannot afford to get a new phone.
Thanks in advance to all who would be helping me in answering all or any of the questions.
Will love to see the xperience from those who have already installed the custom ROM.

Hi,
Welcome to XDA
1. Take backup of your personal data first (Like: Contact, Pics, Videos, docs,etc..)
2. You can get beck to your old STOCK ROM. After rooting your device you will take a complete NANDROID BACKUP, which will restore your previous one. (When needed).
3. I would suggest you to go for the Disciplexone ROM or WildChild 3. Disciplexone ROM was doing good for me, when I had it before CM9.
4. You will get more options than in your list.
You never have to worry about anything, since the device will make wonders after you root. (But more caution required).
Hope this may be useful. (If really press 'Thanks').

Hey welcome here.
1. There are many ways to take backup. I suggest you take a nandroid backup (i.e. backup with cwm recovery) just after you flash a custom recovery. It'll restore the phone in as it is state if something goes wrong.
For apps and all i generally use Titanium Backup. It works great.
2. There is a thread for stock ROMs in Android Development Forum here. You'll find yours there.
3. Umm That is a tuff question. For me CM9 does but it has some minor bugs if they don't affect you.. JB is still in development so I won't recommend it. Go for CM7 or any GB rom as they are mostly free of bugs.
4. Disciple1's ROM, Sense 3.5 EQDKP, Wildchild and CM7.
5. I don't know what to say about it as I installed the first version of WC3 and I came back to CM9 in a day. It was really unstable for me. Maybe just me.
6. Just unlock bootloader and flash a custom recovery and then make a nandroid. the bootloader will be unaffected though.
7. Oh there aren't any.

Successfully Root SGS3 4.1.1 T999

Hello, first time thread poster here
I have a Wind Mobile SGS3 T-999V with 4.1.1 Jelly bean and Im still looking for a way to successfully root my device.
Ive looked around but most of these threads comments have problems and don't work after the new Jelly Bean update that rolled out last week.
Was just looking for advice on the best way to do it (MAC preferably but Windows works too) to root my SGS3, any compatible recoveries that work on the device and any advice on ROMs that will help me save battery, get rid of bloat ware and make my phone faster and more efficient.
Thanks a lot! :cyclops:
More information of my device can be given if needed!
P.S. I actually have a few friends that are awaiting ways to do this too so any info will help about 5+ people more so than just myself!
Im just the test dummy to see if the rooting method and ROMs work!
Root just as before, no difference with jb.
I still root the same way I did on ics and works perfectly.

You can odin root66 from official firmware thread in stickies from development forum.
As to recovery there are two which I know of, twrp or cwm.
And as to rom, I recommend FrostyJB. Great rom with very good battery life (around 20h on mid-heavy use), most of bloat removed. With right kernel you can overclock it to work even faster, it's fast already. Try ktoonsez or trinity kernel. Both are confirmed to work.

Thanks a lot I tried the Root66 and it worked easily.
Will FrostyJB get rid of any of the SGS3 features such as smart stay and calling when you put the phone to your ear?
And also what do you find is the easiest way to install ClockWork Mod for it? Because ROM manager doesnt seem to have the recovery for WIND/T-MOBILE SGS3s
Thanks a lot for your help!

Things like smart stay, motion, etc. are available in FrostyJB. Like in every stock (tw) based rom. But unfortunately DJ stopped his work on that ROM and there will be no new versions, but in current release everything is stable and works great.
I have installed cwm using rom manager. It worked great for me. Are you sure you are doing everything right?

Need help installing new kernel

Hello and thank you for taking your time in reading, I will start by letting you know my samsung captivate glide is already rooted, android version 4.0.4 and stock kernel 3.1.10-I927ICLJ3-CL970642, now I found this wonderful thread in the development forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892538
mostly im interested in having more available RAM, but it does have a lot of good perks, after reading thru all 32 pages I could not find instruction on how to flash a kernel so here are my questions.
1) how do i flash a new kernel on my phone ?
2) Do i need to flash a rom as well or can i keep the stock ICS with the new kernel ?
Download and install clockworkmod .. the rest will make sense after that

not sure if you can keep the stock rom with the kernel (bone stock.) I don't see why not ... I used Dman's UCLJ3 pre-rooted rom and flashed litekernel onto it so you should be able to.
in CWM, install zip from sdcard, browse to your download folder on your phone and install it.
MAKE SURE you do a full backup first so you can revert if something doesn't pan out.

ty yohan, i see that flashing a kernel is pretty much the same as flashing a rom, I like the stock rom, how stable is Dman's ?
There's crashing issues with his AOKP lockscreen version but it could be because I installed thegreatergoods litekernel. So if you're going to download the pre-rooted debloaded deodex. etc etc.. go with the one that doesn't have the lockscreen. the 14 toggles mod will work and can be configured by quickpanel settings in apps.
One thing that shouldn't be overlooked is ICE Pop, it has a themed dialer (big plus) ... Thegreatergoods literom will be good as well, but personally I dont like the cyan and yellow colors in the messaging app.
I flashed the kernel with success but after testing it for a week I decided to go back to stock, tho speeds were amazingly fast the device was alot more unstable and I couldent handle all the crashes and reebots

URGENT! from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2 or 4.3

Ok so I'm curious of why I'm not able to update from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2 or 4.3. Any time I try to update, it tells me that I'm already up to date. Now I'm wanting the new CyanogenMod, I'm craving it...
When installing gapps is it a MUST to use gapps for 4.1.1 or can I use the ones from 4.2.2? I use Clock Work Recovery Premium but it's not installing google apps with it. It kind of erks me in a way...
So I'm at a complete loss... is it possible to get 4.2 or am I stuck with 4.1?
I'm running a SGH-I747.
Please hit me up asap!

Ok...you are not ready to do what you are asking. Are you even rooted? If you have no idea then you need to stop because you are not even close to being ready to install custom roms. You need to do some extensive reading. Everything about installing custom roms has been covered beyond extensively on this forum and many others. XDA is not designed to hand you the answers on some quick and easy to use instructions and for good reason. You need to know what you are doing and to do that you need to search and read...a lot. If you have a specific problem that has not been addressed in these forums then we will try to help you but don't expect a step by step walkthrough to your post here.

Oh boy.... where can I start... Welcome!! Now, The reason why you can't update to 4.1.1 to 4.3 is because currently, 4.1.1 is the latest update on your phone. But you should be able to update to 4.1.2... I am guessing you are using an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3.
In order to get 4.2.2 (or later 4.3), your phone has to be rooted and you need to have a custom recovery (ClockworkMod or TWRP). Rooting basically enables root directories so that you can modify your phone.
Here is a place to get you started.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Keep in mind that rooting your phone WILL VOID your phone's warranty.
And take a look at this to understand more about rooting or custom recovery:

OK...Now for me not to sound totally like an @$$. Welcome!!! These are definitely some of the best places to start but please do not let it be the only ones you look at. Before you plunge in to root and install custom roms please read peoples experiences and issues they have had throughout the various threads. This will aid you in resolving any problems you may have during the processes you are trying and helps you get a better understanding of your phone. Please make sure that prior to trying to root, you look up information about losing and restoring of your IMEI and tripping your flash counter. As stated above, rooting will VOID your warranty so this is done at your own risk. If you follow instructions closely you should not have any major issues.
I'm sorry gentlemen, this was typed so quick I may have sounded ignorant to the "rooting world".
I know how to successfully root and install custom roms, but my question was so distorted and didn't make sense because I had just got off a 17 hour shift.
I am currently running Cyanogenmod 10 on my SGH-I747, with 4.1.1 gapps. I was having an issue installing Cyanogenmod 10.1 because my phone was 4.1.1.(why it wouldn't work) I was trying to question the fact of, is it possible to upgrade to a 4.2.2 rom and keep the latest version of Cyanogenmod?
Just hearing rumors about a 4.2.2 ROM excites me, but it being a ROM in its self, how can I run Cyanogenmod with it?
I love the feel of mod but if 4.2.2 is better, flexible and faster... I would love to have it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm still a little confused as to what you are asking. There are several versions of Cyanogenmod. CM 10.0 is a 4.1.2 ROM. CM 10.1.2 is a 4.2.2 ROM.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. You can't install CyanogenMod 10.1 at all? What does the error say exactly? Please be a bit more clear so I can help you out
Are you installing the wrong gapps version? If you are flashing Cm10.1 (4.2.2), you need to flash gapps 4.2.2, not gapps 4.1.1.

Upgrade ROM suggestions for a STOCK Note2

Hey guys,
I'm looking to upgrade my mum's stock phone.
I previously updated her phone via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915386
But it seems that the dev is no longer active on that font.
From what I can see on Sammobile the latest FW is:
N7100XXUEMK9
Which is for a UK - BTU phone.
My mum is currently on:
N7100XXDME6_N7100OXXDME2_N7100XXDME4_BTU
Thus ME6 based on 4.1.2.
I was thinking of putting her on 4.3.
I don't want to wipe her phone, nor want her to have any problems - thus I want to leave her on as STOCK as possible.
Just rooted is a privilege (or else I can manually root it somehow) - I only use root on her phone to TB backup - just in case all goes pear shaped.
The reason I want to leave her on stock - is in case she has problems whilst I'm away + she doesn't really need any fancy features or kernels that allow her to OC etc.
I also thought to ask before going in blindly and upgrading her phone.
I'm not at all in the help with the Note2 roms. Thus would appreciate some help in that respect.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi I suggest installing this 4.3 ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595963
It is pre-rooted Stock ROM, one of the latest releases from Samsung. I run it myself, smooth and flawless. No bells or whistles.
But first I suggest you upgrade her bootloader via PC Odin to MJ5, which you will find link in DRKetan's thread, for his V6 ROM. This will ensure no FC or wifi problems.
Best of luck mate

Yes wifi patch is an option if using an older bootloader. I used it for a while but encountered some app FC, freezing of the phone. After upgrading to MJ5 bootloader, all problems went away.
