Nope, rooting is not needed.
Scans tonbil
If I did root, would I be able to remove all the stock crap that comes on the phone ? Or would I need a custom rom also ?
Yeah, I rooted my B111 and froze a lot of Huawei apks with Titanium Backup

Hello,
I have a G2 Running Stock LS980ZVA Kernel Version 3.4.0. Now I rooted the stock ROM and now got a notification to update the ROM to ZVC.
Now my dilemma is do I "Restart and Install" this update or not. Will this brick my phone?
I have TWRP running as the custom recovery. What should I be doing? I tried to search for a similar thread but couldn't find one.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you!
You will brick. Either hold your finger on the notification and then click app data. Click on the show notification. No check mark. Notification will go away.
Regular reboot will not install the update.
If you unroot and put regular recovery back. Then you could.

I have a kind of same problem, I'm from India and my uncle got me sprint lg g2 unlocked, which is rooted and on ZVA (4.2.2).
My question is should I install the OTA for kitkat?
Will i lose my unlock and root ?

I had the OTA downloaded but when i tried installing it, it did not install completely. Phone restarted and is still on 4.2.2 . Everything works as normal though, as I have been prompted 3 times to install the update.

okay, i did some research and found that it is safe to install OTAs but if youre rooted youll lose the root and unlock will still stay.
best imo, is you upgrade to 4.4.2 and root again with custom recovery and install a nice ROM.

Boot into recovery. If you see a black screen with a red triangle or green circle, that is stock recovery. If you see TWRP/CWM you are obviously still on custom recovery.
But in case that the system is not stock, lets assume some system file was missing, won't doing a factory reset resolve the problem since the factory reset is being done from the stock recovery!
hi, I got ota update today and my g3 is rooted.
I tried updating rooted and it failed, so I checked online to find a solution and I tried to do the "restore upgrade errors" from lg pc suite and it didnt find problems to fix.
so I tried "full unroot" from superSU so now I dont have root and update is failing from phone with 0x1117008 error and doesnt work from pc suite.
how can I do the update? (prefer without backup everything and then wipe...)
Hi you have to go into lg pc suite and wake phone choose reconnect then from mobile tab choose restore upgrade errors....

it says "No upgrade items to fix"
Try going into settings then backup and reset/then choose factory data reset then try lg pc suite again thats what i did and it worked..

Remember you will lose root and I have not been able to re-root using the script method after installing the update via PC Suite this morning.
If root is important to you may be worth waiting a bit.

so if I will wait there will be a method to update? All I want is a rooted stock, and a new update has come out. how can I update?
I have a hard time understanding when people want the elevated permissions on their phone, but do not want a means to restore it when they eventually mess it up.
The best method for running a rooted stock is:
Root your device
Unlock your bootloader (if available)
Install a custom recovery
Wipe caches and make a backup
Flash a rooted stock image or a stock-based ROM.
Backup regularly and before any significant change to System.
Enjoy!

I don't think you got me.
I have a stock that I rooted, and there is an update from LG and I want to update but it won't let me because I'm rooted.
the question is: how can I update my phone without backing up and then wipe?

I think I do understand. You are running a rooted stock, want to take an OTA to a new stock, and have it be rooted as well. Correct?

yes, if it can not be rooted at this moment but will be it's fine too
There is never a guarantee that it will be and it may take months. Many times the update is just to fix the exploit that allowed you to root! What I think that you are missing is that you should never accept an OTA if you are looking to run rooted stock. Rooting is something that is typically done ONCE. And once you do, it is advisable to never accept an OTA again.
If you want to run a newer version of stock and have it be rooted, you flash a pre-rooted version via your custom recovery or flash SuperSU via your custom recovery.
Accepting an OTA with a custom recovery is usually disastrous, too.

There's a flashable zip here which contains the stagefright fix, meaning it's the latest update, even though it has a different version name. It's from the Taiwanese (?) or whichever other version of the h815. Works on our international unbranded phones.
DON'T TAKE AN OTA
No, you can't update your phone wit ota if you have root. Is there twrp available for h815?

I was in the same case. This is what I did:
I updated my rooted 10c (locked bootloader) to 10d (stock kdz image) with LG Flashtool.
After reboot, I switched off the phone BEFORE first setup.
Then I used the command tool to flash a rooted 10d.
I didin't loose any app, setting, or whatsoever...:good:
I've rooted some months ago my D855, I rooted it only because I want to write on the SD and use some software that requires root. Since 1 month my G3 says to me that there is a google patch that increase the usability. I'd like to update, but when I try to do this it says to me that rooted devices cannot be updated.
Then I'd like to unroot my device, update, and then root it again, but I'd like to do this without miss my data. How can I do? Some hint?
U can't just unroot.... U have to return to stock firmware, update and if u want roog again.

But I am on stock firmware, or if I root it can be considered an unstock firmware? This is a very bad news

Yes it's considered modified firmware. Also it is a bad idea to try to accept updates when you are rooted this can cause serious problems for your device.
But don't worry you can flash a kdz file using flashtool and choose not to wipe data then get your update then root again please read the guides here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/lg-g3-sticky-roll-thread-t3123907 <<

I think u can open super su/setting/unroot, factory reset and then update OTA.
what about if I do a factory reset from the system menu of my LG? I have titanium backup and I'm doing a full backup on sd now, so I think that after factory reset I won't have root anymore, then I'll root again and then I can restore my backup using Titanium Backup. I'm right?
Thanks
