So, I was wondering if it is possible at all to overclock the Nexus 7 (2013). When I go to the app to overclock it (Yes, already rooted and installed busy box) I am unable to change max CPU's frequency higher than the default 1.5ghz. I also can't change the GPU's frequency over 400. Was wondering if there's like a limit to it or something. I was hoping I could overclock to 2ghz. Please help, thanks

Not to be mean or anything. But you really should not be overclocking your device at all when you don't even know what is required to over clock in the first place'. Let alone 2ghz.

Everybody has to start somewhere.
The kernel linked above should work fine. I would recommend backing up in TWRP/CWM before installing in case something goes wrong.

Why would you need to overclock this device? It already runs amazingly smooth with no lag whatsoever. What is it that you need the overclock for?

Hey guys, I got really bored tonight and decided to do a lot of kernel tests and this is what i found to be the most stable...
CPU- 1.944 GHz with Intellidemand

Intellidemand is (for me) the fastest and smoothest overall with decent battery life as well...

Goes to show not all devices are the same, with Faux kernel on stock 4.4.1, intellidemand makes the device laggy in games whereas interactive is smooth as for me

Well Beach Buggy Blitz would lag at times when there was a lot on screen (like the cave full of coins would kill my fps), This was on stock Kitkat, with custom kernels works fine with no drop in fps.
On a funny side note, cm11 runs everything lag free without needing oc or custom kernels, so maybe it's the stock kernel that's crap

Nexus 7 frame drops
I have a Nexus 7 2gen and i hace notice a frame drop playing Shadowgun Kik Kat 4.4.2. I was so frustraded that I was starting to dislike the nexus 7, but searching I found this threat and read a comment were said about installing a different kernel so I installed ElementalX 2.6, since then I haven't expirience any frame drop playing shadowgun I really enjoy it now, maybe is bad stock kernel. I hope this threat help others

The only game I've played that managed to drop my frames substantially that I would notice was Real Racing 3.
Now, I have CleanRom and ElementalX onboard but haven't played anything to test the performance. 2.1Ghz and GPU at 500Mhz.

I am currently using stock rom with elementax kernel, cpu @1,72ghz and gpu @450mhz. When i tried 2ghz oc, everything worked fine, but it got really hot while gaming. So i´m asking me how dangerous it is to use such high oc values in daily life. How much could it decrease the lifespan of the components?

We can only guess. Keep it at 2ghz, and let us know how long from now before your CPU is baked, then we'll all know for future reference.

Actually it is an underclocked snapdragon 600, but i didn't know that this cpu supports a clock speed until 1.9ghz (thought 1.7ghz would be standard clock). So i think up to 2ghz there shouldn't be any problems and it's okay for everyday use. I've also heard of some rumors that our nexus 7 2013 contains a "second choice" snapdragon 600 chipset, which didn't fullfill the predetermined requirements and that's why it was rebranded as an s4 pro... but this is really unimportant and just speculation.

omg you certainly shouldn't overclock it because the SOC architecture is designed to run at optimal clock speeds... by overclocking it, you might shorten the lifespan of your device and you might even damage it permanently as well

only faux kernel betas allow OC
big warning OC is bad for the HOX given the thermal envelope
you are risking both you battery and processor if you OC
i know you are used to OC from other devices but those had headroom, it is not the case this time, T3 is operating at its max thermal capabilities on the HOX

It's not stupid and I'm dying to overclock my HOX also. Unfortunately Faux's kernels won't let me overclock on my phone, I'm going to name my first kid for whoever is the first to let us overclock this beast .
As already said it gets already hot enough, overclocking will kill it.
And I used to love overclocking on my Xperia Arc, overclocked it 60%
But I think the HOX isn't made for it

the snapdragon 2 on the Arc had a lot of headroom
the chipset is rated @ 1.5ghz stable!
not the case with T3 its milking the very maximum of the 40nm process
in other words Nvidia is OCing its T3 out of box because their chips are designed to survive massive amount of heat (sadly it doesnt mean the battery or other components would survive)
it is already Overclocked lol
sometimes you have to listen to the "science" of it and surrender

I understand why people want to overclock. Why does someone tune a brand new sports car after all it is fast enough to reach the limit in no time.
What gets me is people posting "just leave it" "its fast enough". It's not your device and I'm sure they know its fast enough. Please those kinds of post really arnt needed.
As for the OC in faux's early (001bX) kernels overclocking was available although it was found there are 3 variants of the Tegra 3 SoC. And Asian variant, European and Australian variants. Each reacted differently to OC.

If you're wondering id love to have the capability of overclocking doesn't mean ill be overclocked 24/7
EDIT: @Kris underclocking is available on every kernel something like setcpu or sys tuner will be all you need. Although if your looking to keep heat down there's a thread on XDA about an app called corecontrol (not the one on play store) that can limit the Tegra 3 to 2 cores. Another thing too look at for reducing heat is undervolting. Sys tuner is also capable of this. Currently I believe faux's kernel is the only kernel with true UV control

I use Faux's kernels and even though I have the Asian one that supposedly can be overclocked to 1,700, mine maxes out at 1,500 just like all of the other ones. Still the Faux kernel upped my quadrant speed from 4,700 to 5,000 and seems quicker so I still use it daily. I'm still waiting for the first kernel that can be overclocked .
Only the early kernels had OC it was removed to avoid bootloops in the euro and aus tegra3's the 003bx kernels don't have oc ability

OK, so I currently have my PLAY set to 1.2ghz. My first android phone I OCd from 600mhz to 1ghz and one day while playing a game I heard a loud pop noise, then my phone shut off and that was that... toast. So I have been extremely leary of overclocking now. I am aware there are users who have OCd their phone to 1.4+
My question is how safe is when I use No frills to OC is it ramping up the volts to get that extra power. Also according to the Snapdragon layout it lists the S2 in our phones as capable of 1-1.5ghz... does this mean I could technically go up to 1.5 and be OK? I have a large 3600mha mugen battery, so thats not an issue, but what I am afraid of is popping my phones brains out...

We're on the MSM8655 instead of the 8225. iirc, the difference is that it's cdma oriented as opposed to gsm
Each chip is different in what it can handle, so your best bet is to test it out, slowly. When your system starts to act funky, step down the voltage/speed levels.

Just thought I would open this to everyone on R800x, interested if people could point there OC status below.
Mine is still on 1.2ghz. with Performance and BFQ
Highest I can go is 1.6, but I keep it around stock or slightly underclocked, with SetCPU profiles that increase to 1.2 for games and internet apps. smartassv2 and sio for governor and scheduler.
I heard that underclocking can end up reducing battery life over time. Is there truth to this or is it just a myth?
1.6Ghz and Performance when the screen is on.
Stock when the screen is off.
Battery last all day, but I don't use heavily.

There's a large number of things that can adversely affect battery life, but by the time it becomes a problem, you'd most likely be on a new phone, anyway.

I tried my r800x at 1.6ghz (running Cyanogenmod 9 with stock kernal), and I was stuck in a boot loop that I had to fix through CWM Recovery. I am now running stable at 1.4ghz.
Yeah I'm on my 2nd xplay after I tried to oc to 1.6. My phone got extremely hot so I pulled the battery to let it cool. Upon booting my touch screen was non responsive. I don't ever go past 1.4 now.

Custom kernel such as LuPuS or DooMKerneL
1.6 min and max. SIO, with performance governor, then I switch it after 30% and lower to powersave sio, 804-416 Max or whatever those numbers are.

I'm new to the android modding process, but I'm fairly experienced in linux
I'm guessing I need a custom kernel with the underclock options I want right? The options given are 1200 and 920, I want something like 1066 for a nice middle ground to set my maximum clock speed to, as 920 is too slow for most applications to perform smoothly, but 1200 is way too much heat generated with my apparently defective toroplus

If you're fairly experienced in GNU/Linux, you should be able to build and cherry pick commits for a arm kernel.
Edit: this means look at a cm10 compatible kernel source that has oc implemented.

I was worried I would have to craft and compile my own kernel like back in my gentoo days but I picked up franco kernel and it had exactly what I was looking for. While the phone can still get hot its much slower than it used to be and my battery life seems to have doubled while watching streaming video over wifi

ElementalX kernel - what's the fuss about

Hey guys
Before rooting my tablet I want to know something. Whats the fuss about this specific kernel? I literally see it everywhere ( well done to the dev )
I kinda want to overclock my nexus too 1.7ghz but Im not sure that kernel can do it? I also want amazing battery life I get around 7.5 already so by no means is it bad

I've got elementalx on my nexus 7 2013 : it works perfectly on 1.7ghz... And this kernel has some cool features like double tap to wake... For the battery, you can underclock but while you overclock just a bit, the battery life will be OK

I didn't know there was any kind of a fuss! I think that we are all lucky in the sense that we have multiple good choices for kernels on the Nexus devices and most others in general.
It goes without saying that any custom kernel is going to give you the ability to overclock and it just boils down to what the max MHz is that any specific device can handle. Not that I've tried it but I've seen claims of 1.9 MHz and higher (ElementalX) running fine but each device is going to be different and I personally don't see the point of overclocking that high. I've had mine at 1.7 and 1.8 MHz to run some benchmarks, try different governors (elementalX & ondemand) and get an idea about battery life at those frequencies. Did all that so I can get a comparison to what I see running 1.6 MHz which is what I use everyday, that plus the gpu is set at 450 MHz while using the ondemand governor for both cpu and gpu. I do have to say that my N7 ran very well at 1.7 and 1.8 MHz but "my" goal is to get the best combination of performance and battery life, for my use. I generally see 7- 10 hrs of screen on time which includes watching video and some gaming. Not using any third party apps to control the kernel, mostly default settings when using the aroma installer, slight undervolt for 384 MHz, I don't use DT2W or S2W,. Basically... it's just too easy to install the ElementalX kernel, not worry about having to dial it in and still see a noticeable improvement in performance and battery life. No fuss, no muss!

Aroma installer;
Set each core separately = no
Max Cpu Frq = 1620Mhz
L2 cache and bus = elementalx
Undervolt = 850 min
Thermal = run hot. Mine never gets hot at 1.6 MHz and this way you don't have to worry about thermal throttling.
Max GPU = 450 MHz
Gpu governor = ondemand
i/o scheduler = deadline.
Sleep/wake settings = None
Other settings = use stock ondemand settings. enable max screen freq, enable usb fastcharge, disable magnetic screen off, disable fsysnc, all other options unchecked,

You can use the elementalx governor which does a great job and does improve battery life. In the other settings page leave "use ondemand governor' unchecked and check the box for "gboost." For gaming I personally like to leave mine set up with the ondemand governor, seems just a little bit smoother with less frame drops. You can try both to see which works better for you.

[Q] CPU Temperature exceeding 80°C! How dangerous?

Hi guys,
I understand that some heat when running resource intensive applications and games is to be expected but I believe I've passed into the danger zone, so to speak. When playing XCOM my CPU temperature quickly exceeds 80°C. From my googling on the matter I have come to assume that a temperature as high as 80°C is dangerous for the hardware of the device, but I have had trouble finding upper threshold limits for the model itself.
I guess my questions are as follows:
1) How damaging would running the CPU at 80°C for an extended duration (1hr +) be?
2) What would you consider the max acceptable CPU temperature to be?
3) Assuming it is as bad as thought, what are my options to reduce the CPU temperature, short of avoiding the problem applications? Underclocking seems to be a common suggestion, but I get the feeling that XCOM, or similarly taxing applications, may just fail to run or become incredible sluggish under such constraints.

I've done similar test runs in the Temasek kernel with the recommended configurations through Trickster Mod and there is no difference, the CPU still exceeds 80°C when playing XCOM. After a week or so of googling, searching the forums, and digging through device manuals I feel like I'm spinning my wheels.
Any insight or advice you all might have is greatly appreciated.

You can try a custom kernel, i would recommend you BioShock kernel, with conservativex, max freq 2.2 ghz and undervolt 25 mV... No more over warming for me, great performance and battery life

Agree with this post, conservativex is a great governor to keep your cpu in check and not over throttle itself, also check out my thread I made here awhile back and apply the 8th post down. It really helped keep the temp down on my phone when playing graphically intensive games like dead trigger 2,riptide gp2 etc. Also if you have trickster mod or faux clock(really recommended) you can scale down your max frequency, that should really help keep it cooler and you won't see much of a performance drop (if any) while gaming or heavily using your phone.

Sounds great.. But i have a question.. Some settings are for ondemand based govs wich are unstable with kk... So would you recommend to try this with interactivex? Or wich one. TIA
