I'd like to be more proactive about keeping current backups of my sdcards(internal and external, but external is most important). Are there any apps that will allow me to keep a current sync of the sdcard content onto my desktop? I think I can set up something on my desktop, separate from the phone, if I mount the sdcards as usb storage. I'm trying to avoid this, so I'm thinking the solution will have to be wifi based.
Ideally, I'd like to have the sync check/run during a scheduled time, while my phone is charging or wifi is connected. It would also be nice if I can unplug during a sync without any major catastrophe, and resume as well. I guess the closest thing I can thing I have in mind is something similar to Apple's Time Machine backup functionality.
Manually copying the sdcard contents to my desktop isn't the worst thing, but something automated would be helpful. I saw SyncMe Wireless(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bv.wifisync&hl=en) in the Play store, but wanted to get some opinions before I give it a shot.

I not sure about any apps that work well , but I would think after you find one you could use tasker to run said app at a specified time and/or under certain conditions...ex. WiFi connected at you're house..Just a thought..

That seems to be about right. I did find another app that I plan to try out: Rsync backup for Android(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.kowalczuk.rsync4android&hl=en). This one mentions a Tasker plugin to help set things up as you described. I always planned to set up rsync on one of my servers, so this is probably what I'll try first.

Good find... I knew I had seen a tasker reference for that process somewhere...just couldn't remember what app it was for..good luck.
Have you tried dropsync https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ttxapps.dropsync.pro&hl=en
it has different options for syncing:
two-way
upload only
upload then delete
upload mirror
download only
download then delete
download mirror
you can choose which directories to sync so you can choose your whole sd card or just some folders.
there is a free version with limitations.

So not sure why i didn't think of this earlier, but seeing as we are all probably using an android phone aside from out nexus 7 I thought i'd bring this to light! TURNS OUT... if you have a good account going with bike race, ya know... some good bikes won according to your efforts. But with android there is no way to carry it forth. SOOO you:
1. take your phone with good account, do a titanium backup of the bike race app.
2. Connect phone to computer, search for titanium backup folder on phone drive, copy all "bike race" apps to desktop (i had 3 total)
3. Connect nexus to desktop, and copy files to nexus in same foler
4. Reboot nexus, restore bike race with titanium backup (but only data) ANNNDD VOILA!
enjoy

Yeah, this works fine, but it's a bit cumbersome.
What would be nice is some sort of automated system using google drive / dropbox / whatever. I play World of goo (or any other game) on my phone, and the next time I open it on my tablet, it's already at the latest save point from my phone.

There are several apps that do this. One that I use is DataSync. There is a free and a paid version.
You basically setup a Box.net or DropBox account in the app. It then allows you to push backups of specific apps to your online storage. The cool thing is that it can automatically detect other DataSync apps on the network and automatically sync up and push settings to other devices.
Sync times can be varied by daily or on app change. There are also sync options such as only on WiFi or while Charging.
You can also manually push/pull updates.
Pretty cool.

I'll let you in on my golden rule, if i can't find it in google searching or forum searching, then i post it because either it doesn't exist or its too hard to find. And I felt it pertinent seeing as most gaming apps these days have some form of online sync that backs up your progress and reverts it when you sync the app with an account, bike race being the hit it is has such a feature for the iphone, but not for android.
This thread was not craving your approval, it was purely informational . Over 500 people viewed it in less than a day, and none of them felt the need to be a the fun little raincloud of a first reply.
please go vent your pesimism on a political opinion forum.
For everyone else i was able to help, enjoy!

Great! Now I'm $2.59 poorer DataSync works very well. Thank You.
I am in love with the functionality of taking notes with a pen, and think S Pen works for most parts.
What has been worrying me more and more is how to ensure that some form of backup happens regularly because I am taking work notes mostly. Looking at some of the threads on Samsung sync wiping out notes from the Note it's a bit scary.
Looking for ideas how can this process be automated. At least maybe PDF versions can be saved.. or any other tools we should use ? I wish Google had a S Notes version lol
Can't answer your questions as I haven't explored S Note enough... but I recommend you use Lecture Notes instead, from my limited experience I would say it is superior to S Note especially with the extensive ability to customize how the app functions to suit your needs. Using the S Pen button to switch between pen, eraser, and cutter is ace!
Didn't try, but there is at least one app that supposedly syncs Card folders to Dropbox (DropSpace)

So can you auto save / automate PDF saves?
basically how do you save it for long term?

It auto saves, and you can specify the interval. However, this is just auto saving your notebooks. From the Notebook board you can import/export notebooks, share notebooks, or back them up as pdf.
I can't find any setting to automate the backup process, but as far as I know there are no issues with losing notebooks in Lecture Notes, and they auto save by default.
You could always get hold of the developer - I believe they have a thread here on xda and ask if it's possible to include auto backup as a feature in a future update?

Just coy them to ext sd card you'll never lose them then

I'm using 'Write'. It only has a pen option though, no way to insert text. But, what is fantastic about it is that creates pure html/svg files on the sd card. You can copy and open them in your browser, without needing to export as pdf or whatever. I use FolderSync to automatically copy these files to my laptop every couple of hours, so I can refer to those notes whenever I want to.
On My N5100 Notes are by default stored on sdcard in the folder: S Note (path: /sdcard0/S Note)
so all you need to do is backup that folder to a cloud or alternate storage manually or using sync apps like Dropspace (for dropbox) or FolderSync (for dropbox, gdrive, and others, It even supports local network shares over samba, couldn't get any better).
Edit:
Forgot to mention that: Samsung Kies will also backup your notes to your computer, however good/stable that is , is still an open question though!
Using S-Note and a Samsung account, it's trivial to do cloud sync. I could throw my Note 8 in the trash, get a new one, and sync my stuff. The limitations of manually syncing (share -> appname) to things like Dropbox and Evernote aside. A less productive but more handwriting centric app called Quill even offers automated Evernote sync I believe. Sketchbook Ink can also sync its stuff with Dropbox, although it's rather minimalist all around.
YMMV with other apps. In S-Note's case, just use a Samsung account.

what bothers me, is I had hard copies of all my notes on my tablet. Samsung failed in their programming by allowing their cloud server to take precedent over my hard copies.

Precisely the dangers of two-way background sync. You don't even know what went missing, until the moment you try to find it.
Which leads me to one of the reasons of my severe dislike for MTP protocol we have on Note 8 - on devices with USB Drive Mode, it is so easy to backup/sync files from int/ext cards to PC (e.g. TotalCmd dir sync with binary comparison) - no easy way to do it with MTP.

Is there a mod or something that lets you pre-load web content for a web-based app allowing you to use an app while having no WiFi/data connection? Hear me out...say I have an app that will load galleries from an online database...you can run the mod, select which app you want to preload, run the app...then load whatever content you wanna save, and boom!! Haha...c'mon, no?.You know, almost like when you save a full webpage for offline use in a web browser... only it allows you to do the same kind of thing with an app, by saving the content in a cache!
Call me crazy, but I believe this would be possible for one of you genius developers to create (if not already created). And, I would gladly pay up to $5 for such an app...depending on how well it works
For a clearer example of what I'm talking about here, see post #5

Yes, but where it will allow you to use it with another app. Say I have an app like Dropbox...what if I wanted to preload my dropbox content (for viewing) for when I have no data/WiFi signal. I'm wondering if there's a mod that would allow me to select dropbox, run it...close it, then later open it again. With the mod, it would let you use view your dropbox app as if you were connected...all because the mod saved it in its cache

Sounds possible, it would just depend on the space available/what you're trying to cache. Although I suppose it would maybe let you select specific folders in the case of dropbox. I'm sure someone one smart enough would put something together. :fingers-crossed:

Yeah! Or even another example: say with using a reddit app...maybe first you would run the mod, open your reddit app through the mod...the mod would be in "caching mode" (with a limit of course) and would save anything you load in that app (while connected to WiFi/data)...then you would click a "finished caching" option and close out the app. Later, you can open the mod back up and select "run previously cached session" and you would see your saved reddit session and be able to run it with no internet!
This could be the case with several apps
So, please, someone with the working knowledge of how these things work, caching, permissions, development, etc. can you tell me if this sounds like something that could be created and funtional?
Hi I need a little help if possible, I'm trying to find an app that will let me automove files and folders, I've found an app called "auto-move" that will move my files for me automatically but it doesn't move folders at all. So I need an app that can move folders to another location by the file(folder)name. I found the app called "tasker" and it seems like it might be able to do what I want but not sure as it's a bit of a headache for me to use, so is anyone experienced enough with "tasker" to help me?
Please keep in mind I have looked through a lot of guides but they all involve moving files and not folders.
I basically want to monitor a folder, and if that folder has other folders In it, it will move them to a certain location depending on folder name.
you can use other apps for this purpose, sync type apps like Synchronize Ultimate can sync folders and files to local and cloud network, create sync profiles but also has option to "delete from source after sync" and has plugin for tasker. So you may want to check those kind of apps.
I also found tasker difficult to handle and gave Automate a try, no complaints.

If I helped hit the Thanks button. Follow Me! ~ Buy Me a Coffee ~ DroidMote user ~ Full Android for Shield TV and Nexus Player
Thank you for the quick reply, yeah I figured it out now, I scrapped using tasker. I'm using auto-move to move the files to destination folder and using redirect pro to move files out of folders to the parent directory so auto-move can do its thing. I'm gonna check your suggestion as I'd prefer one app to do the job and by the sounds of it your will do the job
How to avoid losing Photo Date Grouping in Gallery?
Or, is this question better stated as "How do I keep all file properties (creation date, modification date etc.) when copying photos to a new (e.g., larger) micro SD card?
Here is my scenario -
I am getting a new Micro SD card and a holder to plug it into the bottom of the phone. Once I insert that, and the phone recognizes it -
1. *Copy everything from the old card to the new card.
2. Turn off phone, pop out the sim tray and swap the new card into it.
*The date is reset - how do I stop this?
Thoughts?
Shouldn't be a problem
There's an application I use on my laptop that can read the dates and copy it across the other date in batches. I do it every time I move phones as copying changes at least some of the data.

This happens to me every time I get a new device and copy my pics across using a PC. Something gets lost in the translation when put back on to Android... The EXIF tag can sometimes be used if it's stored in the image file to correct the file data. There's apps for this you could try. I haven't bothered in a long time as I just live with it now but it's super annoyingly stupid that it happens.
Never had this issue. I always copy/move my files with Solid Explorer

I use EXIF Date Changer first, that sets the EXIF data to whatever date is in the filename, make sure to untick the checkbox that amends the filenames. Once that's done I use BulkFileChanger to set all the EXIF data to match what has been set by EXIF Date Changer. They're both pretty self-explanatory if you're even vaguely competent
Best to do all this with the files on the SD card and mounted onto your laptop otherwise you're going to have the same issues as soon as you copy them from your laptop back to the SD card. If you need any help then give me a shout.

Is there anyway to do this after you do the transfer the jpeg on Android? It suspect my Canon PC app could do as the date is still correct on the jpeg but stupid Android doesn't reference it. None of my Android gallery apps do. Very irritating.
Been casually searching for a fix as I now have thousands of juxtaposed jpegs... perfect.

From computer to phone when reloading. Not using a backup app, direct transfer.
So the last date modified is the same on all the jpegs in that unloaded folder.
Sort by date and sort by name fails miserably to restore their original sequential order.
