Was just reviewing what is using up my storage space on my internal memory card using DiskUsage and the majority of it is System Data. I thought that the reason that Samsung reserved about 5-6GB of the internal storage was for all of the operating system and any future add ons they wish to add etc. If that is that case, what is the system data that is using 3.5GB of the remaining 10GB of available internal storage on my device?
Thanks
Not been able to find a clear answer on this.
There are lot of answers saying something to the effect of "durrrr, its your system data, of course its going to take up space otherwise you wont be able to use your android device". But clearly the OS is reserved in a seperate partition of the internal SD. As well as this many people have shown that there System data is in the MBs no GBs. As such I still haven't gotten any closer to figuring out what my System Data is and how I go about reducing it.

Am I supposed to go back and erase all of my apps from internal storage after they are moved to the SD card? If so, how?
I just don't understand why I only have 200MB out of 1GB available. All of my apps are on the SD card now.
What do I need to delete out of the internal memory?
Any help is MUCHO appreciated.

You don't actually have 1GB of usable storage space by default. It's split into partitions, and the user storage is only ~512MB or less (I can't remember how I saw what the internal storage was split up as...)
"ONLY 200MB"
How much do you need?
I get your point. You get the point of my questions though, right?
If you have a fast SD card, you can move the dalvik cache to the SD card and free up another 60 megs or so.
You'll never see most of that gigabyte on your phone. Ever. I think the maximum you're allowed for apps on the internal flash storage is 350 megabytes. Even with Apps2SD, I think the dalvik cache for all of your apps is still stored on the internal memory, which would occupy some space.
I don't know what the heck I'm doing is the problem. Once I figure it out, I'll post some stats for new guys like me.
I've formatted my card correctly. Now I'm just trying to figure out if I'm supposed to wipe my system and reinstall in order for the apps to get "moved over" or not. I'm curious as to whether My Backup Pro or Titanium will "restore" the apps to the SD card now that I'm formatted correctly.
I believe the "moving" is not really moving it happens on install. So yes starting fresh is probably the best way to go.
There is only like 350mb or so of user installable space. Depending on rom it could go up a little but its close.
Also remember, not every single portion of the app gets installed on the SD. Some files still need to be stored on nand, just less. Much less depending on the app.
Just make sure you have a decently fast sd card if you want to move dalvik there. class 6 or better imo. It will work with a slower card but it could slow things down.
Froyo requires ext4 partition btw. Not sure what rom your using.
^^ Thanks for the info. I'm using Fresh 1.0.1, which is good because I don't even know how to make Ext4. I'm using Amon RA to partition and the only upgrade option was from 2 to 3. I didn't see anything about 4.
I'll wipe clean and see what happens.
Oh, one more thing that your post made me think of. The whole reason that I'm doing this is so that I don't have to re-install apps every time I wipe and install a new ROM. I figured that the new ROMs would just find my apps on my SD card.
If this isn't the case then it is not worth it to me. Meaning, if I still have to re-install all apps each time I wipe the device there is no benefit to me.
So: is that the case? Do new ROMs just "find" the apps on the SD card?

I'm considering this as my next phone, but have one question for all you folks who already own one.
I currently own an Xperia T, which also has 16GB built in, with 12GB being available for apps and files. However, the 12GB is further partitioned into 2GB for apps and 10GB for media files (when I go to Settings > Storage, I see the partitions as "Device Memory" and "Internal Storage", respectively). This is really inconvenient for me because I'm constantly filling up the apps partition.
Manually moving app data to storage or SD card helps a bit, but doesn't solve the problem because then I can't use widgets, and it does break some apps when I use TiBU to move apps that don't normally allow themselves to be moved.
So, can someone kindly tell me whether the Z1C has the same kind of partitioning? And is it also a 2GB apps : 10GB files division? Some screenshots would be particularly helpful.
Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure it's just one 12 GB partition. In Settings > Storage on my Z1 Compact (running KitKat 4.4.2) it just has the one Device Memory partition of 11.79 GB Total space including Apps; Pictures, videos; Audio; Downloads; etc.
Hope this helps.
It certainly does, thanks a lot!
please help i cant install apps any more because it says "insufficient storage available"

and after that i removed my apps from rom and they took a little space to my internal storage, still i have 2.1 gb free but it cannot download apps
My rom free: 316.6 mb

Some apps look for percentage available instead of MB available or some nonsense.
Could also be that it needs to install some secured data, and that's going into a place you don't have enough space.
Also, if you had an app installed on external memory at some point, and you try to reinstall it, you'll get that error. Check your Application Manager for any apps that have the memory card icon on them. Those can cause problems.
Personally, I use Link2SD Plus, which requires an SD card. This allows you to move whole applications to a second partition of the SD card. Works well with the tab 3, and leaves me with lots of free space.
I'm assuming when you say ROM space free, you mean System partition space free? I only have about 9MB free on mine and it causes no problems.
Have had this issue on my phone before because the ROM itself locked the device as read-only, causing any app to give that error, and had to flash it again.
I had a bunch of unknown junk cluttering my user/data partition (they're the same physical area on the device), and had to wipe the "internal storage" and "data" from a custom recovery after backing up my data I cared about.
Hopefully this is informative, and hopefully someone else can be more helpful
Good luck to you

i dont know what it says but i think it means read-only memory, and my tablet has no recovery mode it only shows "downloading mode"
I don't know if this is a permanent solution but I noticed that I had no "OBB" file in "Android " on my "extsdcard". I created said file and moved all files from "OBB", "sdcard0" to new OBB file. I then started a program who's file I moved to new OBB and immediately closed. Then went back to original OBB to delete newly created file (double) for that app. Now all my apps download straight to extsdcard in the new OBB file. I can also move apps to SD card from app manager .
Let me know if it worked for you.

Since a couple of days I am not able to update my apps anymore. Error message is that there is not enough space left in the internal memory.
The concerning phone is the HTC M8s (TMO-NL), 16 gb, SuperSU, stock recovery, Lollipop 5.0.2, SW 1.10.114.11)
Is there a way I can transfer apps to the SD card? (symlink?) All the big fish (like the facebook app, 400!!! MB, whatsapp etc) are not able to be moved to the SD card, which to put it politely, annoys me deeply. My previous phone I have used for 2,5 years (HTC One X 64 gb) and have never had this issue with a flooded system partition.
Thanks in advance for your ideas!
why not update to 6.0.1 so you cand format the sd as internal ?

You're getting your facts wrong. Apps downloaded from the Play Store and other places are not saved to the system partition. System partition is the OS, and the only system apps are the ones that can included with the OS, such as built-in Google apps or "bloatware". The exception if you specifically installed apps as system apps under root privileges, but this is not the typical situation (you'd know if you did it).
Apps are saved in the data partition, and AFAIK, there is no limit, beyond the size of the internal storage. On a 32 GB M8, you have around 25 GB of storage.
It may just be that you need to delete or move to SD some files that are not necessary.

I really don't feel much for going through whole the installation process* again. I am glad I finally got Adblock plus working and to be honest I only want the d*mn thing to function normally.
(* Run a RUU since TWRP messed up my OS software version, having to re-root again etc etc.)

Yes, you are right, I meant the data partition indeed. I will change the OP. Anyway, the data partition is almost full and I've moved everything I can move to the SD already.
So is there a way I can increase the data storage, since most apps tend to store their information in that partition? I would like to sacrifice the emulated Sdcard0 space to increase the /userdata space.
I've attached a screenshot of "df " as additional information.
And yes, I know the Sdcard0 is already almost full, but for that Whatsapp is to blame with their ridiculous impossibility to relocate the media folder, for which I am wondering if I could make a symlink to my actual SD card.
All in all I am rather disappointed in the M8s, if I had know beforehand it would be a struggle for just loading app updates I would've bought the old M8 .
Edit: I've already deleted all the factory delivered bloatware from T-mobile, as far as the google apps (games/books/music/etc.) I am still working up the courage to remove those, because I don't know if it will render my phone with all kinds of bugs.

You should investigate whether there is an MM update for the M8s, and if it supports adoptable storage (its supported on the M8). Adoptable storage would allow you to use your SD card as part of internal storage, and greatly increases your data storage capacity. It sounds like exactly what you need.

Again, you seem to be confused about the system partition vs. data partition. Deleting pre-installed apps isn't going to help you, as it only frees up space on the system partition.
I have an HTC One M8 running ICE 8.2.2 android 6.0. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2704539
I've had issues with the storage space on the internal storage for quite a while. Despite the phone being a 32GB model it claims that the total is only 24GB and even then my apps, files, etc...are all equal to not that much. Yet I have only barely 1 GB of free space. This problem has been going on for months and I've tried everything. I deleted all the useless files (thumbnails), reinstalled the rom, and wiped cache. Please help.
32 GB is not all internal storage. It is the total storage capacity, and includes a big chunk reserved for the OS to function, including: system partition (ROM, it is flashed/installed to somewhere, you know), cache, firmware (although many of those partitions are small). And some have speculated that some is reserved for video memory. These partitions are typically not "user accessible". Only the "internal storage" partition is available as user accessible (downloads, photos, media, other user docs).
Moral of the story, 24 GB available as internal storage is normal, and you'll never see more (with exception of s-off and changing the partition scheme, but you won't see a huge increase this way). You will find a similar situation on any smartphone device.
If you only have 1 GB free, you must have other files on in internal storage, that you can't find. Try the app DiskUsage or similar. I've found DiskUsage pretty handy for situations like this, as it gives a graphical depiction of how your storage is being taken, and a really intuitive interface that let's you "drill down" into different folders to see what the contents are.
Couple things to note, do you have TWRP backups on the internal storage? Those will take up lots of space (might be 5-6 GB or more if you backup user data). Similarly, if you have ROMs on internal storage (Downloads or otherwise) these will also take up 1-2 GB (Sense ROMs, GPE/AOSP ROMs take less, sometimes 500 MB each). You can keep either (TWRP backups and ROMs) on the SD card. Or transfer to your computer (I always like to have at least one "known good" ROM or TWRP backup on SD for emergencies).
