I am trying to uninstall my system Youtube app which I have installed a modded version of and my phone will not let me. The reason I am doing this is because I want to install the new 5.0 update but the update always fails. Yes I have root permissions, Yes I have tried using root explorer in ES File Explorer, Yes I have granted SuperUser Permissions to all the apps I have tried to do it with, Yes I have tried removing the app using console emulator, Yes I have cleared the data for the Youtube app and Disabled it, Yes I have tried remounting the system partition to allow RW access but it always goes back to read only!! everything I have tried keeps giving me the error READ ONLY FILE SYSTEM! I have used Root apps before and they all worked, why when I try to do something so simple it doesnt work? I have searched around on google and havent seen anyone with the problem I'm having. If it is a problem with the modded apk then there HAS to be a way to remove, in fact as I write this I am conctacting the developer via E-Mail. Please help!
BTW this modded YouTube apk was created by theos0o and I downloaded it from this forum!

Hey guys,
I just went and purchased Root Explorer because I thought it might be a handy App to have. I boot it up and the SuperUser box requests permission, I allow and remember it.
But, Root Explorer wants none of this and just displays this:
Root access could not be obtained because su failed with the following message:
FIX ME! implement ttyname() bionic/libc/bionic/stubs.c:360
Make sure you granted root permission when requested by SuperUser. If you did then try re-rooting your device.
Root Explorer will continue in non-root mode.

I am sure my phone is rooted correctly, all my other "root required" Apps work just fine (and that "su" trick in Terminal returns the #), it's just Root Explorer that doesn't like it. I really don't want to have to re-root the phone... Can anyone make something of that error?
Else { what's involved in re-rooting?
No one?
try to clear SU cache+ root explorer cache from app management and then try to re-grant permissions to root explorer. if this does not work, then just remove root explorer and just redownload it. maybe it is a broken download/install.

Thanks for the help, but, nope, didn't work...
I tried clearing the cache of both SU and RE, didn't work... Tried clearing the cache, then uninstalling, then re-installing... Still didn't work.
It can't be my root itself, as I've said, everything else works just fine...
EDIT: Could it have something to do with the "NAND Unlock" and "S-OFF" I keep hearing? I never did any of this when I originally rooted my Desire, though I do have an older model that - as far as I know - doesn't come with those extra security blocks. Plus, all other apps work with root just fine...
Its not the nand protection, that dosent stop you getting root access, just prevents you from writing to certain parts of the nand....

Ok guys, the latest update for Root Explorer seems to have fixed it. Despite the changelog not having anything relevant to my problem... Either way, it works now
Thanks guys
Is it possible to delete the stock browser with a custom ROM? At the moment if I try and do it from the Manage applications view it doesn't give me the option. But I was wondering if I could manually locate it and delete it without causing any stability issues?
Thanks
You can. ADB from recovery (S-ON), Root explorer (S-OFF).
But I don't know if it causes stability issues - never tried it.
It can be done and has no bearing on anything - just means you can't browse until you get one from the Market
Yes, can confirm that! I'm using Dolphin HD - so removed the stock about an hour ago. No problems.
I can add stock email, news/weather & chat apps to this list - no effect on other apps performing these functions, at least on Oxygen 2.0.1 anyway...
Brilliant, next question. Where is the stock app stored, as I will manually have to remove it.

For me it was system/app/Browser.apk
Removed with Root Explorer.

Ah yeah got to that file using Astro but it's only 684KB, yet when I look in Manage Applications it says that the Internet is 13.76MB.
Unless this includes other data rather than just the Browser, but I'm not so sure?
It surely includes other data (like history, cache etc.)
Probably cache and some settings. In manage applications, clear the data (if that's possible), then remove the .apk
in my opinion the best way to remove system apps is to install Titanium Backup (have the phone rooted), then go to apps in titanium backup then hold your finger on it , the menu appears, slide down and click on remove(using recovery bug)...
I have Titanium Backup but I can't seem to find the stock Browser under the Backup/ Restore tab the only thing I have which is remotely like that is:
[BOOKMARKS] Internet 2.2
Am I looking in the correct place?
Only you can remove it, if you have S-OFFed your phone. And I cant help you with that,I have it deleted already. But should be over there somewhere.
I've rooted my phone using the Unrevoked method and have CWM. But when I've checked the H-Boot screen it says I have S-ON, how do I get it Off?
S-OFF tutorial
Also, I forgot to mention, you can remove files via ADB from CWM/AmonRA. Guide here.
Thanks for this I think I'm going to try the ADB method as it looks a little easier. Plus I did read someone if you remove S-Off it can be permanent and effect warranty.

Apps are stored in /system/apps (may vary with rom?). There are a couple of options:
Titanium backup is free from market and will permanently remove any apps - you need root and s-off for this. Root explorer can be used for the same - just delete the .apk file.
You can also do it via cmd prompt and adb, look for detailed threads about this in these forums!
OK I now have S-Off on my phone and its also now obviously rooted but I still cannot delete my stock browser. I've tried using Titanium Backup but I can't locate it to delete it, I've also tried Root Explorer but when I try to delete the Browser.apk it comes up with the following message:
Browser.apk cannot be deleted because the file system is read only.
Also I've wiped data and deleted many of the stock HTC apps & widgets but I don't seem to be freeing up much if any space. My Low on Space indicator has been on throughout even though I have got rid of the following:
Footprints,
Footprints Widget,
Friend Stream,
Friend Stream Widget,
Music,
Music Widget,
News and Weather,
Peep,
Photo Widget,
Stocks,
Stocks Widget,
Teeter,
Twitter Widget,
Weather Widget.
Does it actually free up much space un-installing these?
Can anyone please help with these issues?
Root explorer fix
Hi
The reason Root Explorer comes with that error is because the system folder is mounted ass read only (you can't edit anything on it)
Fix:
1. Browse to system/app
2. In the upper right corner there is a mount R/W button, press it
3. Now you can read and write and therefore also delete the browser.apk
4. Remember to mount as R/O when done
It doesn't free up space as they are located in /system and regular apps are installed in /data.
I need to unroot and return my Blu Studio 5.3 to stock and to do it I need the Facebook app. Deleted it cuz I never use FB. The app is in /system/app. Facebook.apk. Tried getting it from Play Store and it gives me an error, managed to get it to install by sending it to the phone from accessing the Store by computer, but it installs com.facebook.katana-1.apk as a user app and crashes when I try to start it.
Thanks in advance.
Edit - Fixed it by renaming com.facebook.katana-1.apk to Facebook.apk, moving it to /system/app, using touch to change the file times to match other apps in system, and giving it the same permissions as the other apps

Hi,
I have a rooted Arc with Locked BL, work with 4.0.4...
I have delete some Google sys apps like calendar and download interface. HOWEVER, I have tried many times to delete SE's apps but I failed. I have tried with titanium, explorer and Rom-toolbox. What I can do is just disable SE's apps from apps overview setting.
Any idea?
That's surprising. You can't delete apps even though you're rooted?

Try Root Uninstaller from the Play Market. I did not have any problem to delete any app I want, included SE. Actually, it does not delete, but let you uninstall.
with ics 4.0.4 there is a new folder for apps /vendor/app/
first mount it R/W with root explorer then u should be able to delete the SE apps
I have tried Root Uninstaller pro too. but I can't.
All rooted apps get rooted access, However, they give me an error when deleting apps.
Titanium gave me this error:"Failed to locate the apk file".
Root Uninstaller gave me this message:"Can not uninstall app, an unknown error occurred".
What really surprising me is: I could not find SE apps in system\app ?!!!!!!
NOTE THAT: I have rooted my ARC by flashing ARC S kernel, get the root, then, flash ARC kernel again. The root is there. All apps need root are working very well.
I tried another way to uninstall SE's apps. I reflashed ARC S kernel again... I deleted SE's apps. then, I reflashed ARC kernel, and I found all SE's apps?!!!
All what I can do is: Disabling these apps from system details (App info). But, I want to delete them to get more space.
ANY IDEA...
Remember that, I can't find SE's apps in system\app.

Dear Forum members!
Today I wanted to modify the smiles in the Mms.apk system app..
when i Copied back and tried to isntall, my phone started to reboot and not come back... (I know of course I mistake
From ADB I fixed my phone but just a half success, I copyed back the original Mms.apk and changed the permissions to 644, my phone boots up normally, but I still can't install the apk.. if i try to isntall from system/app it says: Replace app.. (I dont see in any list to be installed) If I press Ok, starting to install, then says: X App not installed. In downloaded apps I see messaging with 0 kilobytes, i can remove. After this if i try to install from system/apps it dont want to replace but the same thing happens... (X App not installed) Another interesting thing. On my Sd folder I still have a copy of Mms.apk, if I enter into this directory withy any file explorer, its quit I have ftp server where i can rename to mms.app -for example. In this case the explorers are not quit But I have no chance to install like user and not like root?..
Of course i have rooted my phone and it works.
Is someone have any idea?
thanks: Karoly
Please help me
I installed to my phone a catlog to read out what happens durring the installation.. I see in the log there is no odex file in the mms.apk ... Is someone can suggest me a solution to install back my factory mms application? I really don't want to reinstall my system because of this problem. Currently I use the latest android update 4.1.2. I have too much settings and apps on the phone :S
Thank you in advance.
Greets: Karoly
If your on a stock Google ROM (Yakju?) you should be able to download the factory image and fastboot flash just the system.img & your apps & data should be fine.
Hi. Thanks your answer.
I tried to flash only the system yesterday, wipe caches and fix permissions, my datas remained, but the mms app still not works.. nothing changed. Is it possible maybe to install this apk from recovery (cwm) mode?
Im sure if i reflash everything will work but i dont want to lose my apps, so i'd like to fight for it if its possible
