friends - so i know there is a 4.1.2 rom but if you flash this using Odin, you will lose all of your data. so i'm asking if there's one that you can flash on top of your rooted 4.1.1 using CWM. if you know there is one available, please direct me to it. many thanks
note: i'm running stock rom; rooted with the aroma bloatware removal. thanks again

No I haven't, but it's a zip so it should delete you data. You could always download it and look at the installer script to verify it doesn't.

Since I knew you weren't going to do it, I took the 5 minutes to download the zip and look at the installer script for you. It does not wipe data. It only wipes system.
It's fun to figure out how to do things on your own.
If you're going to flash a stock rom , you might as well flash S3Rx...it's AT&T stock 4.1.2 based with a lot of enhancements.

@d3athsd00r - thanks for the clarification. i asked the question in that thread but didn't get a clear answer. and yes i wasn't aware you can tell by looking at the install script.
@EzEddie - have you used this rom? How stable is it? I looked at the change log and it seems more than what i want.
general question to everyone who's reading this thread - do you have any other suggestion for stock rom that's either 4.2 or 4.3 based? i want to have the most stable rom that doesn't burn up my battery life and snappy at the same time.
thanks all

Yes I am using this ROM and have been using ROMs by this developer since getting this phone. It is completely stable and runs better than straight stock. Yes it has a ton of features, but you don't need to use all of them. My battery life has also been great on this ROM. Read through that thread, you will see everybody agrees. Just flash it and try it. If you don't like it then flash something else.
There is no stock AT&T ROM with 4.2 or 4.3 for this phone. Your only option is an AOSP variety (cyanogenmod, aokp, etc..) Where you will lose some functionality.

Nothing will wipe you storage unless you make it. S3rX runs in Aroma which gives you the option to wipe Application data but won't erase the rest of your internal storage.
It is highly customizable and and includes multi window, just read the thread thoroughly and you will see what you can do.
I love S3rX and all the options it ships with by default.
i guess i wasn't clear - i meant my phone data (phone log, mms, picture, s-memo, etc...) I think when you flash rom, all of those data will be wiped. unless of course you back them up to restore later.
i will re-read the S3rX rom again. thanks

Again, ROMs won't wipe your data unless you specify it during the install. No one is going to do that because the backlash on them would be awful. You will either get the option in Aroma, or you have to manually do it in your recovery.
ok - thanks
I use SMS Backup+ to back up my phone logs and SMS/MMS to my Gmail account. Works great. Pictures are stored on your SD card and typically isn't wiped, even if you choose factory reset.

If you just want a quick SMS (no MMS) backup then look at SMS Backup & Restore. Saves SMS to .xml file.

I am new to rooting, mods etc. I have managed to get the Cyanogen 10 onto my Sprint Galaxy S3 and put the voicemail app. I find that the phone loses it's data connection intermittently and also sometimes the phone wont turn on and I have to hit the power button for a reboot.
I have searched these forums and the cyanogen ones and there is loose mention of this in posts dated back to August but nothing more recent.
1.) Is this a known bug and/or has it been fixed?
2) Is there a ROM that doesnt suffer from these bugs?
Thanks

While the response given to you is usually correct, you do not meet the requirements to post in a development section. So I have moved your question to the correct section. (Q&A section)
If you have a question about a particular rom that you downloaded, then you will post the question in that particular rom's thread. If it is just a general question, then you post the question in here. (Q&A section).
Development section is strictly reserved for development related items. No question threads should be started in there.

I'm very new to all this and really needed help...
1 - I am rooted and looking to run cyanogenmod and a kernel that supports over and under clocking...I have gaaps zip and the stable cyanogenmod zip on my phone. I did a nandroid backup, a titanium backup and backed up by contacts to Google.
2 - Should I do another nandroid backup when I do a factory reset (before flashing rom) that way I have a backup of the phone completely stock?
3 - After flashing I can reinstall my apps with the free version of titanium backup correct? And will the backup be wiped if it's on internal storage during factory reset?
4 - And do I do a nandroid restore after flashing rom or is that just in case something goes wrong or I don't like the rom?
5 - If I want to over and under clock I still need as kernel right? Basically I just want better battery life...does cyanogenmod generally improve battery life?
Sorry for all the questions I've been doing alot of reading and just not started watching YouTube videos...just wanna be cautious

I always do a nandroid right before a ROM flash. Then delete any older nandroids I have. You just want to be able to restore your device to it's state immediately before the flash if anything goes wrong.
Your backups will not be wiped. You will be able to restore them, but I seriously suggest purchasing the full version of TB.
Restoring the nandroid will give you exactly what you made the nandroid of. Its a back up if you do want to go back, or if something goes wrong. Only restore it when you want to return to it. I.e. if you don't like CM or if it's not working right.
You need the kernel to oc. The stock CM kernel doesn't do it. Make sure the kernel that you are flashing is meant for the ROM. Otherwise you're in for trouble.
Good questions for a beginner. Good luck.

Thanks. One more question. I downloaded the stable version. Its that what I want? If they have a stable one then why do the nightlies.keep getting made? Are they just basically daily beta versions? If I get the latest nightly would I have to do this whole flashing and restoring my apps every time I want the new nightly? Thanks for helping me guys.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I usually stick with the stable release. Not that I know of anything specifically wrong with any nightly; I also haven't read any of the change logs to see what the differences are. I would assume, like you seem to, that the team would be working on improvements.
When I have flashed nightlies, I didn't wipe data and restore apps. Just flashes the nightly, gapps, then clean caches.
BTW, a lot of people do say that restoring apps and their data with TB to a new ROM causes problems. I believe this could be true, but I do it anyway. If any app does give me trouble after a restore I deal with it individually.

You still have to wipe going to those ROMs regardless....
Op:
Any ROM you go to will need a full wipe.
Unless the dev states that you dont and releases an update for a specific ROM, you'll have to wipe everytime.

What everyone else has been saying.. If you switch from one ROM to another you HAVE to full wipe the first time. After that, just wiping cache/dalvik is standard procedure upon an update to your current ROM.

Yes have too, and please read exactly what I wrote and what others wrote.
If you're coming from ANOTHER rom (example: Jedi rom to Jellybam)
You HAVE to wipe.
If you're running the same rom
(example: Jedi [beta 1] )
And you wanna change it to the same or upgrade the rom
(example: Jedi [beta 2] )
You DONT have to wipe UNLESS you're told so by the OP
And you HAVE HAVE HAVE to wipe going from Touchwiz to AOSP
Don't give out false information, if your device can miraculously flash ROMs with out wiping that's amazing
But don't put other in dangerous situations where they might freak out or even possibly brick their phones

Ok guys, these are modded versions of TDJ's tools to add the preload partition. This should allow you to wipe cache and dalvik without jacking up the symlinks. Also for you guys having issues installing a ROM, the superwipe should fix that. First flash the ROM and reboot (important), then if you are having issues flash the super wipe and then the ROM again. Reboot and you should be good.
Thanks again TDJ!!! You rock bro.
Note to other developers: Feel free to link here from your thread, just don't re-upload them please. Thanks

I used these scripts installing a ROM and I am having very serious issues. I was using Clockwork and when I rebooted I got stuck in a boot loop. I booted back into recovery but I was not getting fully back into recovery. I tried several times. I finally ODINed back to stock but I can't get the ****ing phone to boot up. It gets toa popup that says ""unfortunatley google partner setup has stopped" and then if I clear that "Google account manager has stopped", "google calender storage has stopped""unfortuantely the process com. android.phone has stopped". ****. I have tried ODIN to 3.5 stock and 4.0.3 both having similar issues.
Anyone have any idea, may have absolutley nothing to do with these scripts but any ideas would be very much appreciated.
What are you running and what are you trying to flash? Wouldn't be the scripts as they only wipe, format, align the partitions.

I was running CWM 6.0.2.9 touch and trying to flash the StockWalk ROM. I don't know if you have seen something like this before but it seems like I am totally unable to install any GAPPS even when flashing stock ROM in ODIN. I had flashed the same ROM before attempting to use the scripts, the reason was that I was unable to add my google account (may be a defect in the ROM but others are saying they have not had issue).
*when I say install GAPPS I am just refering to the ones that install on TW ROMS, I am not flashing a GAPPS file of any kind

OK so I thought I knew enough to not feel like a noob, but here I am with three questions.
First question is what is a "preload problem"?
Second question is this will only work on 4.1.2, and not 4.2.2 (CM 10.1)?
And the third question is will using the original DS wipes mess something up?
T mobiles 4.1.2 loads a preboot partition. Wiping cache with anything but these scripts also wipes these partitions. This script is modified to not do that. No preboot partition = boot loop.
Thus, if you're on anything BUT Tmobiles 4.1.2 you don't need this script and there's no advantage to using it.

No you can flash it from internal SD, but when you wipe make sure you don't wipe data or internal SD. Just factory reset, wipe system, and cache and dalvik cache all from recovery
Thanks how do i make sure i dont wipe the whole thing and only the wipe system/factory reset?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Free mobile app
On the wipe options don't select media or internal SD, that's about it
In twrp, by default, factory resetting will preserve your internal sdcard. It will wipe everything else you need to reset.
Many still disagree with me on this next point, but do not wipe /system. Any rom you might flash will do that for you. But if you do wipe system, and something doesn't work as expected and aborts the rom flash, you will now have a device with no o/s. Ive seen it happen many times and is always a headache easily avoided.
Like I said, some disagree with me on this, but none have been able to convince me that there's ever a time that wiping /system has any benefit.

2.It says it supports the motion gestures with the included kernel, So that means when I flash the rom, it'll flash the required kernel, right?
3. By wiping the cache, dalvik, data, and system wouldn't that also delete my nandroid-THAT I may need if something goes wrong?
4.once I flash it, once I go to re-download my apps, will all my in app purchases be restored? Or better yet, if I backup with Titanium backup, wouldn't the wipe before I flash the rom wipe my backups???
Again, sorry im such a noob, I always swore id stay just stock rooted, but the features of this rom has convinced me otherwise.. Any help/ guidance would be SO GREATLY APPRECIATED!

2. Yes, kernels are packed into boot.img's that get flashed with the Rom.
3. No. The data wipe in recovery does not touch your storage. You would have to choose wipe storage.
4. Your apps may or may not automatically restore...but they will be visible under my apps. Tibu will work perfectly if you do not wipe storage.
