[Q] Am I Running A Rom? - HTC One V

So I have been running through the forums for some advice on rooting, and installing rom for my phone. I ran into massive lag issues after following a sites recommendation to install crossbreeder. I reset phone to factory defaults because of this.
I would believe Im still running the custom rom, I did do a basic google check on my rom version but it did not help--
CWM installed- but also when logging into rom manager it staes TWRP as well--
Crossbreeder folder exist in /system as specified in tutorial
Kernal version is-
3.0.46- Titanium- V6
[email protected]
null
I did do a basic search for to find rom versions but just people asking, not a general way of telling, besides the one post indicating that rom dev will put their signature in the rom, which I think is seen in mine.
Just a reminder- I followed the tut for installing Crossbreeder ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113150 is where I followed )
on the HTC One V-- Using CWM to initially install the rom- What My main goal of finding this out would be with crossbreeder attached, is it the same thing as say "icebox" or CM10? or any of these, if not, why?
PS: Sorry if this question is previously answered, even pointed into the right directions would strongly help- Thanks for the help in advance

Ok so install "kiss" kernel. Would I just install over the existing? So it's clear what I've installed is a kernel not a rom.

Yes it is a kernel. No need to do anything, just install over existing.

CrossBreeder isn't a Rom, it is only a mod to speedup the device, but it doesn't work on stock Rom

It does if you use TK kernel, I believe.

[Q] Kernel flashing question...

Hi,
I'm using LeeDrOiD's HD 1.5.1 ROM (and loving it!!)
Last night I flashed the Buzz OC/UV 1.51GHz kernel to play around with overclock and see what my device could do. (no problems there)
Now I would like to restore the LeeDrOiD kernel.
So, my questions are:
Is the "LeeDrOiD V1.3 custom Kernel for Non Leedroid users - 30/01/11"
(found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842802)
the same as the kernel in Lee's ROM?
If it is, can I just download it and flash it through recovery to overwrite Buzz kernel?
Thanks
You can use that kernel and shouldn't run into any problems
Running CM8 aka Meringue, From the Future lol DHD
Hey Thanks,
1 more question (sorry)..
If I restore a Nandroid backup (via clockworkmod recovery), will that also restore the kernel?
Thankyou for your patience
--------edit---------
Nevermind... I just went for it !
For anyone with the same/similar question to mine:
This does restore kernel too. (But you probebly already knew that)
I'm such a newb to all this
It's a good question, and thanks for answering it, as it piqued my interest as well.
Now we know, kernel is restored. I would have guessed at yes as Nandroid is like taking a disk image of your phone.
Or you can reflash the rom but you lose any themes or any mods that you might of flashed
Running CM8 aka Meringue, From the Future lol DHD
Thanx for the info

So this is just a stock vision Sense? I'm confused on what's added on Virtuous and not on stock Sense?
are there any screenshots?
thanks
Pretty sure its just vision sense.

so... i can flash this on my Desire Z??
It's just almost Pure stock except:
Rooted with my customized version of Superuser (required until ChainsDD releases a version with my patches).
Deodexed with moderate compression throughout.
Busybox installed in /system/xbin.
Added large APNS list to /system/etc.
Yes,that`s all!
Otherwise its totally stock ROM.
Hi Guys! I have a short question concerning this ROM and Superuser
I used the 1.34 OTA Stock Sense ROM (right out of the box) and rooted my device with the HTC Vision Wiki tutorial. Everything worked fine.
Then "updated" to this ROM here and now my Superuser app keeps quitting as soon as I start the app.
I can't remove or update it (although there seems to be an update via Applanet).
Does anyone know how to fix it?
Thx in advance

Can you capture and post a logcat of the failure occurring?
If I tried to use logcat on my device with Terminal Emulator and I get this error message:
"Unable to open log device /dev/log/main : Permission denied"
Does it mean I'm no longer on S-Off and due to that Superuser is quitting all the time?
does any1 have a release note for this HTC rom?
Does this make you lose all your data?
Just curious as its official if its possible to flash without losing everything (again)...
can I flash this to my Rooted G2 with Engineering SPL and Clock work?

long as you are rooted/s-off you can flash this rom, you can also use any of the kernels from here: http://files.virtuousrom.com/vision/kernels/virtuous/2.x/ standard is the recommended =)
I want to try some sense apps, but not a full sense rom. Can I take these and push them to my CM7?
I will try in a bit
In short, no. Sense apps need the sense framework.
@Mnemoch Yes. If you're coming from another Sense ROM you can flash this without wiping - I flashed this over the official 1.72 last night and then added the standard OC kernel for Virtuous. It's smooth as butter

How do I match kernel to ROM?

This is one of those n00b questions that probably seems obvious but isn't, at least for me.
One can safely assume a kernel that says it is for CM7 or CM9 will work with ROMs with those names. But what about ROMs based on stock, like DarkForest 3.0.5 or the UK ROM? It's not quite as clear to me and I didn't see that info in the ROMs where I would expect it to be.

DoomLord or Darkforest (stock based, it's a few pages back in dev forum) or stock (flash via ftf) for stock based (darkforest 3/cola/IT-Rom/gbtweaked/r800x UK). Kernel associated with rom for others.

So ROMS should indicate whether they are based on Stock or not, and they should indicate the kernal, shouldn't they?
Also, I think one can also say, if you want to be on the bleeding edge of technology, go with CM9 or maybe CM7. If you want to use your Play to play videos, games that use video cutscenes, etc, stick with a Stock-based ROM. (At this point in development, anyway.)
And, Pax, Am I also correct in assuming when FXP puts up a new build, as they just did, I will want to hold off until Chevyowner updates his link, or is there a way for me to keep the CDMA functionality using other builds?
BTW - CM9 is awesome!
If I ever get around to creating an update.zip, we might have a flashable porting zip for CDMA on CM9

That would be sweet!
The Darkforest kernel links are all outdated so that is a no-go. I installed DoomLord's kernel without a problem, but I can't get into recovery on it, tried back button, volume down, volume up, home, search... nothing.
Just flashed back to stock with the ftf file and installed the doomkernel again - boots ok into Stock now, so that's something. However, I understand that this kernel is harder on the battery use than Keiran's.
The learning continues! Now to figure out how to get recovery on it and how to get in it!.

1) Create the file structure and fill it with the files you want to use.
2) Write the updater script.
3) sign it with testsign.jar.
4) Flash it.
That's how you basically create an update.zip. The really boney part is the updater script, in which you have to figure out the correct permissions, symlinks and other stuff, and/or run the scripts you want to have working.

I recently flashed Doomkernel v11 on my stock rom then flashed the wifi modules and everything is fine. When Doomkernel logo appears on boot, that is the time the LED turns to blue and I just pressed "back" key on my xplay and it boot into Doomkernel's boot manager. However, I also installed CWM 5.0.2.7 for Xperia phones just to be sure. Lastly, it really is a bit of hard battery in the battery but it is fast and stable. Btw, I am using T.E.A.M. rom as of now and it is also fast and stable.

He's on the R800x, I haven't tested out doomkernel v11 (i know doomkernel v10 gsm had an issue with DHCP on R800x) and T.E.A.M. rom is currently not working on R800x (we've been having baseband issues with porting any of the 4.xxx firmware to Xperia Play)

Completely understandable, this thread started as a R800x focused one, but with Logseman no longer updating the Guide/Rollup thread, we do need a new on focused on matching kernels with Roms...

Hi, I have a few noob questions as well:
1. Does a custom ROM like CM7 or Lite'ning have their own kernel ? When I flash them, the kernel I have now (CF-ROOT) gets replaced ?
2. How do I know to match a kernel to a ROM ?

And thus we return to the original question!
I have since found that the best way to know which kernel to use with a ROM is to read through the thread for the ROM you are interested in. If a ROM is based on stock, then look for kernels based on stock, etc.
Also some ROMs package a kernel to be used with them in the zip file. It's always a good choice when you want to try a ROM and you aren't sure what kernel to use.

Which ROM is better than the stock one?

I have received today my HTC ONE V (PRIMO U)
Instead of trying several ROM's, could anybody please recommend me a good ROM being updated/supported frequently?
Thanks

Thanks, I will try your CM10 ROM, although I have rooted and installed several ROMS in a samsung spica, and a sony Xperia ArcS, I have not very clear how to install your ROM.
Wipe Data, Cache, and system "OK"
Flash the ROM "It's the TEST13 file? is this done in the recovery, right?"
Flash GApps "is this done in the recovery, right?"
Download the boot.img "OK xD"
Flash boot.img in fastboot "I guess this one is not done in the recovery, could you please be a little bit more specific? what is included in the boot.img? it's mandatory?"
If I install this kernel it adds any apps/option in the ROM so I can change the OC to 1.2 or keep the default 1?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765687
Or in order to change I need to install a 3rd party app in google play?
Thanks in advance

boot.img is the kernel, mandatory.
In case you need commands
Settings>Performance has options for freq. control. But I think some app like "no frills" is recommended.

because there are settings in the kernel which are NEEDED to even boot CM10 and they are not in the stock kernel
thats the easiest explanation i can give you

[Q] Can I flash any kernel after flashing a rom?

I use cm10 build 6, can I go ahead and pick a kernel to flash over the stock cm kernel?
Well the kernel you want must be compatible with the rom you are using and your device. For example if you are on CM10 you must flash kernels built for CM10/jelly bean. Otherwise you will get boot loops.
There might be some kernels for CM10 in the development section of Galaxy wonder.

flash the kernel that is exactly for ur ROM

It's better to stay with the same Kernel, from my point of view, I guess if you shared with us why do you wanna change the Kernel, there might be a solution for your problem, a friend of mine Flashed a different kernel and it was supposed to be compatible, but still he had problems and he flashed everything back again.
I wanted to use other governors. Btw I flashed a new kernel and it seems fine as of now

Good for you, as long as everything is working smoothly, then good luck with the new Kernel:good:
is it really just limited by CM9/CM10? Like if I am using acro's cm9 RC6 and the kernel was released after RC7 was released, maybe some of the extra features in RC7 causes a slightly different coding for the kernel which of course may cause problems if you use it on RC6?
also i suppose there's no need for clearing data/cache, fixing permission etc when flashing kernel right?
sorry if I'm not supposed to ask questions in a question. I just feel this is relevant to the title and i feel that it is better when people can just read this post and learn more about kernels. The list of how-tos in the dev section has not much details on kernels
