When I use G Maps the heading never points the right way. As a result, the map will scroll in strange directions, like sideways and upsidedown. I have clicked the icon in the lower right (sort of looks like a compass), and the res&white arrow that appears in the upper right sometimes, depending on how many times I have tapped the lower right icon. I know it is not hardware related because Waze, OSM, and Sygic all work correctly.
I have noticed that in G Maps, if you look at the blue dot in the center, you can see a little arrow pointing out, supposedly indicating your heading. Well, it never points to my heading. I don't know if it is using the compass or the GPS to figure out the heading, but whatever it is, it isn't working.
I have also tried calibrating the compass using the GPS Status program, and that didn't help either.
I have the same issue since the maps havebbeen updated. It think me as a crab and believe I go sideways :/

I don't know if this is similar to what I experienced but just confirm because I believe the new Google maps is by far the best.... one day I was sitting at the back of the car ... my face was facing the road travel direction as well as my phone
however somebody was hooting and I turned back we over speed I noticed the arrow was now pointing in reverse !!!!! I only realised later that the new Google maps is very sensitive as in it knows the direction of where the phone is pointing... example if you hold your phone as usual move in forward direction as on map it's okay but if you keep moving and tilt your phone like to top of your phone is now the back and the back is now the front in the same direction of travel the arrow direction will change it will look as if you are traveling in reverse lol

I haven't tried moving my phone around in the car, but if what you say is true, then they must be using the compass to determine the direction, which would be strange since they can just use the gps. It's a shame because it used to work with the older versions and every other navigation program out there seems to work fine.
Try app Gps Status & toolbox on play store. There is a option to reset compass. There is also some other useful options like agps data reset and gyroscope reset.

Having the same problem... still
I know this is kind of a old post, but I'm having the same problem on my VZW Galaxy S3. I have been having it form many months now. I have since rooted my phone and have been using Custom ROMs and such, but nothing has changed regarding this issue. I think it's pretty crazy that it hasn't been fixed by Google after all this time, but I also find it interesting that I only find reports of this (by searching the web) on an intermittent basis. I would expect to find much more wide-spread info about it, but have not. In any case, it still seems broken and is pretty frustrating because I use Maps a lot.
Is this problem still present for you, as well? If not, was there something you did to fix it? I haven't found much advice beyond recalibrating the GPS (which did not help, by the way).
Thanks,
-SR-

Same problem on my att note3!! Could have sworn I had the problem on my att note2 also (which I still have so I can test).
This thread was one of the first results on google for this issue. Let us all congregate and comment here.... power in numbers!!
So it seems its a samsung issue...
Also.. I noticed that my location was jumping around.. from a tiny blue circle and exact location to a large blue circle with an inaccurate(but close) location.. about once every second.. in the maps app. I shut off my network based location (left gps on) and this stopped.
Anyway my next step is to play with gps status when driving to make sure its not a compass sensor based issue.
Please all.. anyone that suffers this please register and comment below with more details.

This free app GPS Status 4.3.83 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2 knows my heading absolutely perfectly.. whether GPS or network-based location or nothing is enabled. That means my Note 3 compass works great. The problem lies in google maps or the way it attempts to read heading.
I will note.. when I am navigating to any address.. my heading reports fine along the road im on. This problem only occurs when you have no destination set in google maps. Thats when the blue arrow points in an inaccurate direction.
I have this problem and have complained to samsung, vzw, Google forums, and from within Maps. Nothing helps. Nobody admits there is a problem. I don't have time to recalibrate the compass every time I drive (it only lasts about 10 minutes anyway) and I prefer not to set a destination so I can see traffic conditions on my route.

I have the same problem since google maps upgraded.
My car needs to move in the right direction for google maps to work correctly.
Once I stop, the compass turns 180 and the route is recalculated for the other direction.
It is really anoying.
I have recalibrated my compass numerous times but it doesn't help.
After reading this thread I'm convinced in the way google maps handle the direction.
I can't believe this issue gets so little attention.

A real one? Why is the one I used fake? What app do you recommend?
Also yours is verizon and im on att... att with gps problems
there is an app called simply compass. it has no GPS nor data connection. even if you calibrate the compass within 10 minutes in a car heading is wrong. compass works fine indoors or on foot. no good in car where google maps accesses it.

IM RUNNING CALKS latest and greatest btw... Most all fixes get a fast lock, or at least a lock after a reboot. The REAL test is:will it still get a lock after, lets say, 8hrs? This is the only "fix" that has truly passed that test... Try it, and you will agree I like to open gps status and get a lock on satelites before i use my gps too, if that makes any difference.
This zip, plus GPS status works the best. Wipe dalvik and cache then flash away....
Best way to check is use GPS to get first lock and directions.... if that's good, then try to do the same thing a few hours later BEFORE A REBOOT.... works like a charm.... I finally think this one works guys... check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13140032&postcount=17953
What problem is this fixing?
I have been using GPS Status for a long time. I would do the same on my Epic...open GPS Status, let it lock then Maps and Telenav had much better and quicker lock. I wasn't aware of those area fixes though. Telenav has been flawless on this phone for me around L.A. but I will definitely see what they're about. Thanks

A good number of unlucky people like me were experiencing SHAKY GPS.
This is fixing my gps not working at all... Sometimes it would work off of several reboots.Same for my gf's et4g. i was tempted to exchange it for another et4g. I've had my phone since day 1, and gps has never worked consistenly.. Now it works flawlessly! Thanks again Angeldeath!!
##GPSCLRX# + MSL will reset your gps, a lot less of a pain too if your having problems getting a fix.
i think the gps is very weak. i can never get a lock in my basement while my evos never had a problem. when im outside, my e4gt will get a lock eventually.
tried all kinda of fixes none work. though i think i must have borked it somehow. maybe a complete reformat will fix it but dont wanna do that any time soon

Depending on where you live should determine which zip you should download. And if you travel all over the u.s., just use the north american zip.(i recommend using the zip for the actual area that you live in)... Next, flash from recovery, then install GPS Status & Toolbox from the market.Turn on gps, open up gps status & toolbox, and select menu/settings/Display & Tools.. Then check "Show time to Gps fix"...keep gps status & toolbox open till sats are fixed..DONE. NOW I get immediate locks!!!
Anytime you reboot or power off, you have to open GPS Status to fix sats... THANKYOU ANGELDEATH and Xenova FOR THIS WONDERFUL GPS FIX THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR OUR PHONES!!!

Lol there's a Florida specific zip? I didn't know we were that ****ed.
this fix doesn't work
my phone was good until last week, now navigation never works, GPS takes 30-90 seconds to get a location within a few meters of me.
i've been trying everything, as many have been, and this fix only works for the first minute after using gps status. if i wait an hour and check maps again, i have to reset and re-download to get sats again and it still doesn't always work.
at this point i'm mildly convinced it's a hardware issue. unless a new driver is found, i'm going to try to get an exchange soon.
Edit:
Going back to square one (so far) has been a good fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
Edit 2:
Nope, going back to pure stock works as temporary as flashing regional GPS sats or clearing GPS cache

Some of those weather apps use the network location, not gps, and some display the nearest weather reporting station instead of your exact location. It all depends where the apps get its information from.
Beautiful widgets reported Dudley as location, the town next to me, probably using that tower. Weather Bug reports popular bluff airport, 25 miles away.

I recently started using Endomondo with my One X (Im new to endomondo anyway!). On my first run i noticed some odd placement of some of the GPS markers on the route i followed. I figured it was just bad signal.
I took both my One X and Nexus one out today, One X in left trouser pocket and N1 in my Right. The N1 does still have some anomalous readings but nowhere near as many as my OneX

Having come from the iPhone 4 (using MotionX GPS) I also downloaded Endomondo last week to give it a try. Did an 8 mile walk with the phone having a clear view of the sky. Looks okay when zoomed out, but if you zoom in to view the route then it looks like I've had 20 pints beforehand and am wavering all over the place!

Having similar problem with Noom. Seems to think I have travelled three times the distance, in some cases, simply because of the erratic zig zags. It actually produces reasonable results if I reduce the GPS polling frequency (setting within Noom) to 30 seconds, from the default 1 second.
Had same kind of problem with Endomondo on my HTC One X.

You could try to put the phone in Plane/flying mode and then delete the Agps info with the gps status app.
Maybe that will work, because endomondo (or any other app) will not be able to update the gps info at that moment.
I must say, i have not yet tried it, so i have no idea if this realy works, but i think it should work.

I've had my Nexus for a few months now and all of a sudden I started experiencing the same problem the other day. If I check the weather card on Now it picks up my current location but when I 'drill' into the detail all of a sudden I'm in France! Similar thing when searching, I get asked if I want to change my default google page from UK to FR and I get prices in € instead of my usual £.
I've tried rebooting, turning the GPS off and on, disabled and then re-enabled my location tracking settings... all to no avail. I've also set my home and work locations on Google...
If anyone has the vaguest inclination about what might be going on, I'd be much obliged to hear about it.
Thanks

Eh, when you;re new, people expect you to use Google and find the answer. You'll get used to it. Don't worry, there's a lot of good folks here who are willing to help.
Ok, in answer to your issue, I guess a Mod has to come in and do it.
Go to Settings/Locations.
Turn off the Provider (auto, or use Provider Settings) option, and enter your city manually. (make sure you also select your time zone)
You may also have to do this with your weather widget and do a city search under it's options.
The reason being, if everything is set to auto, based on Provider location, they may not have a base exactly in your City. So we have to set one manually. Or they will use what ever is closest.

Excellent, glad to hear there are good folk
RE your fix, I'll give it a try. Just to say in the meantime though that I've got a Galaxy Nexus as well (getting on a bit now admittedly) and that's absolutely fine with locations etc. Also the Nexus 7 has been perfectly fine for the past few months... I only mention that because of your point about provider location etc.
I'll give it a try and let ya know though.
Oooh and as I've typing my response I've just been alerted to the fact that I've got 4.3 ready for installation (must've just come through OTA) - perhaps that'll jump-start things into working again.
Thanks again

Location on nexus 7 way wrong
I got my problem resolved. I called Google help and they had me do a factory reset. Initially, that didn't work. I went into apps and drilled down to maps app and cleared all cache and data. I am now seeing the maps app pinpoint me in my exact location. Weather app is also precise. Thaanks for the help.

Oooh factory reset... I must confess that prospect doesn't fill with me with joy, but I guess if it's the only way to get things working again then needs must. Appreciate the info, as always, thanks.

Ha Ha. The only thing more drastic than that, is to re-flash the whole ROM :silly:
Gotta love Google Support. Hard reset is their first advice. Unfortunately, be aware, when you do that, you lose all personal data, so you should always back up your information, docs, photos, etc. just in case.
Location on nexus 7 way wrong
As it turns out my problem did not go away. I turned off the Nexus; back on a few hours later. My eyes went buggy as I went into maps, see it load beautifully to my location and then, in a flash, move back to that same location about 50 miles from my location. I don't get it. Help.
Anyone else having issues with Google maps not working properly. It is always showing me behind my actual location or going down a street or two over from where I actually am. Any fix out there for Google maps cause version 7 and 7.5 are not working at all.
When I revert back to version 6 it won't lock on to gps either. It must be my phone e then. Any fix out there?
Which ROM are you running? If you do, how often do you flash Roms. One thing I experienced from being a flashaholic is that after awhile it will poop your GPS. My fix is to return phone back to stock ROM, turn GPS on and go back into recovery and flash ROM of choice. If that's not your situation then you could try multiple GPS fix apps out there

Maps does suck..try using gps tools or gps fast fix to set your satellite server
I reverted back to an older version of maps with navigation separate

Google maps works perfect for me, to my exact location. Although I have only flashed CM11 and now on Jedi5.

Yeah I have no complaints

I would say it's not a Google maps issue. As of two days ago I had a nexus 5 with the latest version of maps and I use it frequently without the slightest issue.
Then two days ago I got the note 3 and I notice that navigation is behind a lot. It's the phone not Google maps

No issues at all.
TWEAKED 1.0 NOTE 3
I don't have any issues like you mentioned by the sound for the directions sucks

Working prefect for me on all roms
Official CM11 & Lean Kernel v1.1 Powered SM-N900T
I had the same annoying problem. The GPS would take a minute to lock, and would always think I'm a street or two over, and telling me to turn constantly. It annoyed the hell out of me. Strangely I flashed Willl03s CM11 rom and mine locks quickly now and is much more accurate. As earlier mentioned, I've had luck with using Odin and installing the stock rom too.

GPS works fine, hardware-wise, but not in Google Maps.

I am having this issue specifically with Google maps. I did thorough testing driving around tonight-- it does not happen with Waze. For me, the issue is not getting a lock-- it gets the location correct pretty quickly. The issue is that it stops updating maps (even though the phone is clearly getting current, accurate GPS data).
I was split-screening Google Maps and GPS Status. GPS Status updated location frequently and never showed an error range of above about 10-20m.
In Google Maps, the location sticks very frequently-- it will show me in the right location. Then it will stop updating my location (on the map) and catch up with me half-a-minute later or so. It does this same thing in any app that relies on Google maps, too.
Are you guys talking about driving around with google navigation or google maps? With google navigation it works flawlessly for me, if I drive around with google maps open it does tend to jump around for some reason. I dont understand why Navigation would be spot on but not maps.
use Waze

Never ever had luck with that. Took me to a place that was like 10 miles away. I was pissed.

:-/ then I don't know, I remember having issues on my SGSIII and Waze was the best option...I'm using it now with my Note 3 and so far no complaints...
Just picked up this phone today and after both OTA went ahead and set it up. I noticed i'm dropping to regular 4g (non-lte) during calls and don't have HD voice. Did they really roll this phone out without volte enabled? I can't find it anywhere in settings!
Automatically on by default. If it isn't working for you, your location may be unsupported.

Nope. Wrong answer man. My S7e works in same location and has for months. It's broken on this phone. In the meantime I found threads on it on tmobiles forums as well.

Haha...jynxed. So based on your feedback and the fact mine is new i factory reset it. Now have it working. When I took the two ota out of the box today I didn't have my Sim in the phone. Seems that didn't play nice for provisioning as it prevented the ims registration later.

I too set up my phone without a SIM card, as I was waiting for a case to arrive.
Put the SIM in yesterday and phone would not make calls over LTE. Every time I started dialing a number the LTE symbol would change to 4G. I took it to the local T-Mobile store where they first replaced the SIM (which didn't work) and finally did a factory reset which did enable VOLTE.
Here is a solution
''I posted on here a week or so ago curious that I wasn't able to stay on LTE while making a call (receiving a call I could, though), and asked others if they were experiencing the same thing. I noticed a couple phones in the T-Mobile store were also experiencing the same issue, and a replacement of my SIM card and phone didn't fix the issue.
After scouring the Internet, I came across some steps for getting into the "Enhanced LTE Services" option to see if it was enabled, seeing as how the carriers seem to have removed it from the normal "Mobile Networks" menu as on the Pixel.
Lo and behold, it turns out this setting was disabled. Not sure how that could have happened, since it's not (easily) configurable and other devices (G6, Pixel, OP3T, IP7+) all worked fine with VoLTE and HD Voice. I figured I'd share my knowledge so other people experiencing the same issue can hopefully have this solved.
Download Nova Launcher, or any other launcher that allows you to create a 1x1 widget of an "Activity"
Tap/hold to create a widget, and add a 1x1 Activity Widget anywhere on your home screen.
When the menu pops up with the options to pick from, scroll down to the 3rd phone expandable, with 129 options.
Expand it, and look for "Enhanced LTE Services"
You now have a 1x1 home screen "app" that brings you directly into a hidden menu containing the option
Note: HD Voice is another option that can be added for an HD Voice menu, with a couple settings (note than enabling the "Use when LTE available" option will seemingly disable the Enhanced LTE Services option).
Was super frustrating with all the things I tried, and it ended up being a 3 minute fix to switch a setting on, so I hope this can help someone else who is equally (or more!) frustrated than I was with this.''

Yeah my old trick of getting to menu where the volte flag needed flipped didn't work so that's a good find right there.

Thanks for this information, and hopefully it will help others. :good:
I wish that you would have posted this before I spent 3+ hours restoring my phone settings, as the Samsung backup app the T-Mobile store used was terrible.
