This started about 6 months ago. Every now and then when flashing a new rom, or updating a rom, my phone would get stuck on the screen before the boot animation starts playing. It has been getting a lot more common. Especially on the new CM10.2 nightly. What happens is this...I updated from 10.1.2 to 10.2 (dirty flash), and then it got stuck on the splash screen before the boot animation. Whenever this happens, the only remedy to make my phone bootable again is to wipe the "data" partition. Thats really annoying as I lose all of my podcasts, and more importantly all of the pictures I have taken.
So I decided to just wipe everything, and start from scratch with the cm10.2.zip. Let me take the time to show you my process of installing a new rom, I have done this probably two or three hundred times, but maybe I forgot how to do it along the way or something.
1. Boot into TWRP (v2.4.1.0)
2.Wipe Factory Reset 3 times, System 3 times.
3. Install ROM.zip, install propper version of GAPPS.zip
4. Reboot System
5. Wait for it to boot, reboot again, wipe cache/dalvik 3 times.
6. Good to go
Did that exact thing for cm10.2.zip, and it worked great. Did some app installs, and had to reboot. Bam, stuck at splash screen. This happens on cm10.2 no matter what after a reboot. If I do a clean install of 10.2, not touch anything afterwards, just restart, it will be stuck on the splash screen. But as I said before, it happens randomly when I am installing any rom/update. I am not messing the kernels anymore, haven't for awhile.
Any ideas?
Few things get the latest version of your recovery secondly as I just did recently. Re-Odin everything back to stock through DocHolidays thread I chose DLJC and then Odin your recovery just get it from twrps site and then go about your business. I too was having the weird boot up and hang on bootani with every ROM I installed, I would just hard reset via holding power button but finally cleared it all up by doing the steps above.

And just in case, don't restore system data such as accounts, settings, etc from a backup such as one from titanium. Imo its best to restore as little as possible this way. Some of it may be incompatible.

Sorry, I looked at the stickies in a few categories, and Googled for a few minutes and couldn't find anything. Wasn't sure what the actual thread was about. The link in your sig was pretty obvious, but I didn't think to look there.
It's gonna take an hour to download the stock firmware, so I will probably work on this tomorrow. Will update then.
Def do and ask questions in this thread or search his thread as it has more than likely been covered a few times I suggest downloading the needed files and putting them in an easy place as well using 7zip and having it ready for use as well.

For the Odin firmware, all the links I see are hosted on Androidfilehost and Hotfile. I was only getting about 100kb/s on both sites.
Just tried this morning though and its downloading at 7mb/s. Guess they were just bogged down last night.
Ok, glad its better now! the whole reason I host them on afh is because hotfile is sooooo sloooow! If afh was going that slow they may have had some problems.

So I had fun this morning...
After flashing the root66 DLJC, I got stuck in a bootloop. I know its supposed to take up to 10 minutes according to the thread, but I let it go for a good 30 minutes before I decided to try again. Tried the root66 DLJA, same thing. Finally decided to try completely stock unrooted DLJC, and still the same thing. Booted into stock recovery for the hell of it, and factory reset/wipe cache and it booted up fine. Not sure what the deal was there.
I got my recovery installed, and all seems to be working on cm10.2.
I did try updating my TWRP last night before going back to stock, and it didn't help the problems I was having.
But it seems to be all in working order now, thanks for your help.
Anytime! Glad you figured it out. 99% of bootloops and boot hangs are solved by a factory reset. Its because some previous data was left over that was incompatible with what you were flashing.

I'm running [ROM][28 Aug] [UVALH2 v37] XquiziT TMO ONLY!...
Whenever I turn on my phone, I get: Android is Upgrading... Starting Applications.
Although I don't think it affects the phones performance... it started happening after flashing Wildchild's ROM.
Of course, I have Wiped data, Dalvik, cache... and re-downloading, reflashing.
I also tried Wildchild's Superwipe [wipes EVERYTHING].
Some see it completely normal [SEE THIS POST], while others think it's not normal.
Any enlightening will be appreciated.
could it be updating your apps and checking for ota, abd that why it says that a boot up?
Why does it bother people so much? It isn't a big deal and it isn't affecting performance save boot up time but honestly how often does your phone boot?

It sounds like its wiping dalvik on every boot for some reason. I would try reflashing and if that doesn't work try flashing a different rom.

What? Nothing is wrong.
Well, its not exactly behaving the way that it should. Its rebuilding dalvik every boot. Not supposed to do that, so if its not acting right.......
Additionally, (and I know this isnt a very big deal, but to others it is) thats a lot of extra writing that is totally unnecessary.

I flashed and reflashed with triple wipe [internal SD/system/etc]
I guess I'll try a diff ROM. I'm just happy with the current ROM though.
Have you flashed any mods or themes?
Just a shot in the dark, but heres a couple things you could try.
Install the deodexed UVALH2 rom, see if it still happens. If it does try to use Odin to flash the pure stock (will lose root). If it still happens I would try a different release at that point, just to narrow it down.
If it stops happening try flashing xquizit over top of the full version and see if it starts again.
Something else to try is use a different recovery. If you're still up for troubleshooting at that point!
How did you update to UVALH2 in the first place? Did you flash one of the rooted versions, or did you update with the full firmware or ota via Odin?
Like I said, its a shot in the dark, but im just wondering if something happened or got left behind when you updated.

pretty sure wild child's builds have the ROM fix perms each time you boot. this is the cause of this message. don't worry, you are fine.

Did this happen after flashing a new rom? If so, then try going into recovery, wiping everything at least 3 times and then flash the rom again
It could also be a bad download if you were flashing a rom
And if you weren't flashing, how did this happen? All of a sudden or right after doing something? Some more info would be nice

Avast will flag all the roms as a virus and kill them about half way through the download. So when you go to download a rom, Suspend Avast (usually an hour), also, make that folder you have them going into exception from the scan. I had this problem with Avast on my computer as well. Try that and should be ok. (It did it when downloading TPR.. it's a rather large file (900mb) and i was stopping around 300.) Hope it helps!

Ahh bad download, yeah. Most sites give you an md5 hash like dev-host or goo.im, you should always try to check the hash of your file against it so you can be sure there are no issues. It can be frustrating, but I have seen occasions where the person finally got the rom to work after literally downloading 10 times

Hi there!
I have had an s3 for a few days now and love it!.
Any TW rom and my camera works just fantastic.
Any cm10/aokp/miui/etc rom and I just cant use the camera no matter what app I use to try it, whether it be the built in app or camera360/etc.
Driving me nuts and would love someone to help me. Anyway research I have done hasnt told me what I'm doing wrong.
I wipe cache/dalvik/factory reset/system before each rom. I have tried different kernels but nothing has helped.
Any gurus out there have any ideas on what I can do to fix this?
Your install process would be and please link the files you are flashing... I'll try and help you. I've seen a few people mention this the past couple days.
The most recent I tried to flash was Illusion v1.1.18 - (d2tmo, d2att & d2vzw) - 1|18|13 from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037028
I downloaded Illusion-v1.1.18-d2tmo.zip and gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip.
I went into recovery which is twrp and the most recent version. I installed it with the goo.im app.
When in recovery I did:
1) Factory Wipe
2) Wipe Cache
3) Wipe Dalvik
4) Wipe System
I would then click Install and select the rom file, and after it succesfully flashed I would then flash the gapps file. All were successful.
I would then reboot and the rom would boot up fine. I setup my google account and all that then for the heck of it I would reboot.
I then would try the camera app and it would complain that it couldnt connect to the camera basically. I went into the play store and tried a free version of camera 360, puddle camera, etc and all would not work.
I went back into recovery, wiped cache and dalvik again, hopped on one foot, faced east, and clicked my heels together. Upon reboot the camera does not work.
I have wiped all that and tried to install [Kernel][JB] Leankernel: Minimalistic Kernel for D2TMO/D2ATT (AOSP) v2.3 [1/17/13] which flashed fine. Upon reboot I could change voltages to undervolt, mess with governors but cameras still do not work.
I have a backup of two TW roms (one stock) and both of the those roms work beautifully with whatever camera I try, including the built in/stock camera.
I hoped I didn't leave out something. If there is something I missed than I'm an idiot because it seems like I am really missing something.
Thanks for your help.
I don't see any reason your steps lead to that, the exact steps I take every time to flash. I'm researching but in the mean time, go to app manager and wipe cache and data from gallery... Are you using the same Gapps over and over on each try? Might wanna try a different set.

I just force stopped on gallery, wiped cache/data, rebooted, and I tried the camera only to get the same message.

I have downloaded this gapps twice for the last rom http://goo.im/devs/itsmikeramsay/gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip.
For the miui rom there was a gapps that was specific to miui and had miui in the name. The miui rom's camera didnt work.
I'll look for a different gapps if that might be the problem but since I have tried a couple roms and a few different gapps I feel that might not be the issue.
I still will give it another try though. Just have to find another gapps to try.

Hey guys! Its been a while since I've rooted a phone (HTC Inspire 4G) but last night I rooted my S3. Today I was checking storage and it says I have 2.62GB left on my internal SD card. I run the numbers on apps, downloads, etc. and it just doesn't add up to using 9GBs of space. I'm running LiquidSmooth with gapps (which downloaded my previous apps from stock via my account). Can someone help me out with this? Even if I have to completely wipe the storage space to get the room back, I'm fine with that. I just don't like not having space especially when there should be way more since there are no pictures or music on the phone. Thanks everyone and its good to be back flashing!

*Edit*
Disregard not being to find them... Apparently I have a separate folder labeled /sdcard/0 that I have no idea how it was made... Is there a .exe to full wipe/format my sdcard so I can start with a clean slate and then simply restore my current ROM/Kernel? Factory reset, format system, wiping cache and dalvik cache then restoring backup isn't working.

It is now that I reported it for being in the wrong section and a mod moved it.
Think before you post.
Anyways, the internal SD card is always going to have much less space then as advertised on the phone. My phone is a 16GB and out of the box I think it had like 13 or so.
You can install TWRP from Goo Manager and use that recovery to make a backup, format your internal storage, then restore data from a backup if you really think you're missing space, but honestly you probably arent.
Thank you for noticing that it was in the wrong forum Tekno.... And for getting that fixed. I understand I have less than advertised but before I rooted it, I backed up all the pictures onto my computer. My phone has no pictures or music on it so I'm trying to figure out where 10GBs have gone.
I will look up TWRP and hopefully that will help...

Well if you've already backed up that you may as well just backup your contacts and anything else you may need and start clean. And by that I mean do a full wipe before flashing a ROM and don't restore data after.

Well, I'm a little too late for all of that now. I soft bricked the phone. Using CWM, I managed to erase everything from the sdcard. All files, all folders, everything. Now when the phone boots it hangs at the "Samsung Galaxy S III" screen. I can, however, get into Download Mode and Recovery Mode. Unfortunately for me though, I do not have the stock ROM .tar and cannot download it due to workstation restrictions. I can also get to Recovery Mode but I have absolutely no files on the sdcard at all and I can't figure out a way to force push LiquidSmooth onto the phone. I receive recognition of connection via ODIN but that program only uses .tar/.gz/.img/etc. and I can't put the LiquidSmooth .zip on that way. Hopefully someone can bring me a copy of the Stock ROM in to work tomorrow as I'm on duty and won't be able to leave work for a while (days).
Oh, it's been a while since I've bricked a phone also. Those days I don't miss...
Are there any other options that I may not have exhausted?

Well, I'm a little too late for all of that now. I soft bricked the phone. Using CWM, I managed to erase everything from the sdcard. All files, all folders, everything. Well heres a few things you can try:
1) ADB to push the rom to the phone
2) Use a proxy service to download original firmware (not sure if your workplace would like that though), Heres a link to the stock ATT firmware, not rooted, pure stock from sammobile http://www.hotfile.com/dl/182319352/b8d55a6/I747UCDLK3_I747ATTDLK3_ATT.zip.html
3) Ask to borrow a co-workers phone to download the file
Thanks Tekno. Finally back online...

Hello. I currently have TWRP 2.5.0.0 recovery installed along with LiquidSmooth rom.
About a month ago i installed android tweaker pro (sorry i cant post the link to the app cause im a noob ) and enabled some of the settings. Now everytime i reboot my phone it gets stuck on the boot animation, and i have to pull the battery and turn it back on to make it boot properly. Sometimes i have to do this multiple times until it boots properly. I have tried uninstalling the app but that also hasnt fixed it. Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this without reflashing a rom? Also is it bad for the phone to pull the battery often?
Can you boot to recovery? Restore the backup you made before this started happening. Assuming you made a backup.
If not, go to download mode and Odin stock.

Or tru a factoru reset first (you'd prob be forced to if you odin stock since you're on liquid smooth now) since uou have twrp it won't wipe you're internal sd, but it will wipe out your apps and some appdata, as well as your settings.
Nandroid backup first.

Not necessarily. If the problem is from some data left from a mod or app he tried, flashing the rom probably won't fix it. That would only be a fix by itself if the problem were somewhere on the system partition. So he would wind up factory resetting. I just suggested trying this first. But reflashing could be done first too, either way.
Plus 90% of boot issues are solved with a factory reset.
You guys are right though, in that it'll be better to try flashing the rom. Its probably a better first/second step than Odin flashing the stock firmware.

Thanks for the replies everyone. My original question was is there a way to fix this without flashing a rom? Is pulling the battery every time I boot bad for the phone? I'm a bit scared of flashing roms so I want to avoid doing it if possible.
I gave you one option. Factory reset. Aside from that uour best and probably only other option is to flash the rom. Thats why they suggested it.
As for battery pulling, it shouldn't do much, but you can end up with corrupted files, and it is possible (though unlikely) that you could damage some hardware.
Its not recommended, but if you gotta do it......well, you gotta do it.

I don't think it's bad for your device, but do you honestly want to be pulling a battery everytime you boot your device?
Try the different options posted. You shouldn't be scared of flashing roms if you read directions carefully.
