[Q] Stock Nexus wont connect to PC - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello there, I got a new Nexus 7, running build JSS15J. Right out of the box everything worked fine. Upon connecting to wifi and updating to 4.3 the device would no longer connect to the computer. The only driver that installs when the device is plugged in is the Google Nexus ADB Interface. (And I still cant see it as an ADB device)
I plan to ultimately root the device, but cannot do so. I've factory reset the device, and still no connection with the PC.
I'm fairly certain it is not my computer as my Galaxy S4 still connects to my computer and is recognized.
More Info: The tablet connects through PTP (camera) mode and allows me to transfer files that way, but will not connect any other way.

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44523227&postcount=101, it worked for me. I first used WUG's tools to unlock and root. Need to go to development option in settings, to allow debugging. If you don't have it, go to "about phone" and tap 7 times to activate.

I was planning on using WUG's Tools (already have them downloaded). I have debugging enabled and have disabled both MTP and PTP, still WUG's tools do not recognize my device. (my computer does not recognize it either)
The link you gave me solved the computer problem! I can now transfer via MTP! THANKS!
Next problem: WUG's Tools still do not recognize my device...
EDIT: Solved, just put it in PTP (camera) mode and it worked perfectly

[Q] after installing android SDK and rooting Nexus File transfer stops working

I've never had a problem with android file transfer up till I rooted today. My wife has a stock Nexus 7 and I can plug her Nexus into my computer and the file transfer app will start. I have usb debugging turned on and the usb connection on my tablet is set to Media device.
Now as I'm typing this my Nexus has been connect to my mac for about an hour. I just went to the USB settings to make sure I had Media device selected and the file transfer window popped up out of nowhere. I killed it and tried again and it won't come up. Maybe in an hour or so if it does the same thing.
Any ideas as to what's going on? Very strange behavior.
Disable USB debugging.
Unplug/plug in your nexus.
The USB IDs change for some reason when you have USB debugging turned on and the MTP device isn't recognized as such. PTP (camera) mode continues to work for both cases though.
Thanks for the suggestion but It still fails. I disabled debugging and still can't connect. Switching USB modes didn't help either.
If that doesn't work uninstall the adb driver & then plug your tablet back in so it will reinstall
My next suggestion would to reboot the tablet with USB debugging turned off.
If that doesn't work, my next suggestion would be to delete the existing drivers and force reinstall.
All with USB debugging turned off.

Make sure after you plug in your device you're looking at your tab and click OK on the pop up........

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's working now. I was just about ready to delete the driver and the tablet started to be recognized consistently. I was in the settings screen and toggled debugging on and off while plugging in the tablet. I noticed the info bar at the top alternating between showing "debugging" and "media device" and I selected each one a couple of times when they came up. I think that it finally worked through the ID confusion that was mentions. I'll follow the the rest of the instructions if the problem comes back.
Thanks again.
It's acting up again so I'm going to try deleting the drivers. I thought I knew what to do but I can't find any information. What's the procedure to delete the driver? I'm running os x lion
I've tried every suggestion in all of these threads so far & nothing worked. Even after I deleted the ADB drivers, windows 7 would automatically reinstall them. When I tried to update the drivers, win7 said they already had the best drivers (ADB).
Here's what worked for me:
I had to turn off USB debugging, delete the ADB drivers in Device Manager, then reboot the device while it's still plugged in. Windows recognized the device as an MTP device & installed the drivers before it even fully booted.
I'm not sure how I finally resolved the problem on my mac. I toggled debugging on and off and rebooted a couple of times. That may have done it. I also ran the adb script in the SDK platform-tools folder. I don't know what that script does exactly but possibly it reinitialized the driver and ID.
Anyway, hopefully these workflows will work for others.

Rooted my nexus 7 (2012) last night and struggling with my laptop not recognizing it. This thread solved it!
Delete the ADB on my window, toggle off debugging and restart the nexus 7 with usb connected to laptop. works like a charm.
Thank you!
Guys, my N4 got this problem too.. until just a few minute ago
I read somewhere ini goge groups (i think N5 group), and found explanation that we can change ADB or MTP "mode" on device manager. On "Androoid ADB Device" right click and select "Update Driver Software". Click "Browse My Computer for Driver Software" and then "Let me pick from blablabla...." And then select MTP USB Device, "next" and my N4 detected on Windows Explorer.
Hope it will be usefull for you guys.

[Q] Nexus 7 (flo) not connecting to PC????

im not sure if ive been looking in the wrong places but i cant find an answer to my problem. so i rooted my nexus 7 about a week ago and installed twrp. everything was working fine until i accidentally pressed wipe data instead of factory reset. i deleted EVERYTHING on my tablet including my operating system, the only thing left was twrp :crying: today my otg usb cable came in and i installed that unofficial cyanogenmod build and now it wont connect to my pc. i have usb debugging on and everything. i go to device manager (on my pc) and it is listed as "Nexus 7" but when i try to install the usb drivers it says that they dont work for it. how can i get the usb drivers to work again?
Note: its not my pc cause my rooted s3 works just fine with my pc.
sorry for being a noob! and thanks for the help!
I actually have the same issue where my Windows won't let me navigate my N7 as a portable device. Tried a whackload of drivers and the like to no avail. To transfer files I just end up using ES Explorer. Funny enough, ADB in recovery works just fine.
If it is the same as PA and PAC, try Settings > Storage > Press Menu > USB > Check MTP

Were you on stock before you wiped? Trying going back to stock and see if you can get MTP working, then start introducing the parts until you figure out what broke.
The USB IDs for the MTP device change more often than you'd expect causing recognition problems.
For example, on stock, with USB debugging enabled, it advertises one USB ID and also sends out a MTP-compatible flag. When USB debugging is disabled, a different USB ID is sent, minus the MTP-compatible flag.
I helped someone on a different ROM force the MTP device drivers to associate, but then the drivers couldn't initialize the device. This might indicate there is a problem on the ROM side.

If your ADB works in recovery then you must have installed some other adb device driver, other than Google's, at some point.
If you want I can try helping you get things recognized on this thread

Can't get Nexus 7 to show up on computer

Shows up on my laptop but not on my desktop, have tried back and front USB ports
have uninstalled USB drivers, reinstalled USB drivers (universal adbdriversetup6 downloaded from xda sources)
downloaded android SDK manager and installed whatever USB stuff it had there
used USBdeview to remove any nexus 7 related things and then re-install USB drivers
Cannot for the life of me figure out what's going on... can anyone help me please
When I plug it in my desktop it makes the sound like something got connected... even has the safely remove hardware thing with nexus 7 there, but nothing in my computer
also have tried with/without USB debugging
tried removing my rom and flashing stock etc
Nothing has worked so far
and yes forgot to put in the title but this is for the Nexus 7FHD 2013
Is there a chance you are using usb3.0 port and can switch to usb2.0?
I would suggest you backup, flash stock, and redo your driver deinstall/install on stock. Try to get it working there first. Make sure USB debugging is disable on stock.

Driver instal with WinXP
I went around with this problem after both my Win7 laptop and WinXP desktop both recognized my N7 2013 the first time I connected to them. I had no problem dragging and dropping files.
I had then returned the tab back to BB for a exchange for another. This time after setting up the tab and setting the MTP file toggle and USB settings correctly......The Win7 laptop worked find and recognized the N7 just like it did on the first tab. But now the WinXP desktop did not work and only saw the N7 as a ABD device.
You may already have the correct drivers (if not those are available here in several posts). You just have to direct windows driver update to the correct place for the MTP driver. Here is how i did it.
1. Open up the Device Manager on your PC and locate the Android device it sees. Select the update driver option and you get to the "Welcome to the Hardware Update Wizard" screen.
2. In this window it asks "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?" Select the 3rd option ' No, not at this time"
3. In the next window "This wizard helps you install software for...." Select the 2nd option "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
4. In the "Please choose your search and installation options" window... go down to the bottom and select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" option.
5. Now finally the window we need..... "Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware" The "show compatible hardware" button should be selected...if not check that box. You should see 2 choices in the "Model" area..... Google Nexus ADB Interface" and what we need to select " MTP Device" click on the MTP Device and hit next......it should install and your Nexus 7 should then show up properly.
Hope this works for all that have had a hard time as I did....I just found it odd after getting a replacement N7 my XP desktop did not recognize it as it did to the original one I used the day prior.

Just go in settings then storage and then computer usb connection by opening preferences in storage and then make sure mtp is checked.
Thank you guys SO MUCH for the help... I actually just returned my unit to staples because those POS wont give me a price adjustment vs google play
Will buy another one from google play and follow steps in the thread!

I remember few years back I installed miui ROM on my xperia n couldn't connect to PC , only to realise USB wasn't turned to mtp by default. I thought it was a bug, tried everything even to fix it only to realise this.

You saved lots of time for me

If nothing else here has helped you solve this issue, check my thread, it should be of some help to you...
I'm having an issue where I can connect to my laptop in debug mode, but I'm not able to connect in the MTP mode with debug turned off. I expected to be able to mount the device storage in either mode.
Is that correct? If so, any ideas? I do notice I can't seem to get the MTP driver to stay in device manager.

[Q] My computer not recognizing MTP AT ALL

Hey guys. I been here for like 4 hours just dabbling with everything. And cannot seem to find any solution to this...
I have uninstall all drivers and restarted like ten times now doing the same process over and over, cleaning up each file carefully of the nexus or any android device.
My problem is when i plug in my nexus 7 2nd gen, it seems to not even detect squat.
I have usb debug enabled
my MTP is on
( if i switch to PTP i can access the folder)
Ive done fresh start on everything i even look through device and try changing the option to MTP and STILL DOES not work
I don't even see my nexus 7 in my HDD external or anything, nothing pops up but an ADB success driver, and when i changed it to MTP a MTP success driver with STILL no luck....
I just bought it today and it worked fine earlier, now when i root it and stuff it seems to be glitchy with my MTP
I even factory reset everything i couldn't access my ADB
any help would be appreciated
Someone said that manually updating the adb usb driver in devices should show you a choice, choose mtp. It should then sort itself out properly.

On your Nexus, open "settings", click on "Storage", click on options(3 vertical dots on the top right corner), click on "USB PC Connection", now check MTP option.
Try connecting to your PC (or Mac) now. I didn't have to do that on a stock build, but for some reason I had to do it on a couple of custom roms. Hope it helps ya out...
Try enabling USB debugging. I know it sounds odd but its helped me with my devices.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
do this only if you can see PTP on PC
On PC check device manger, on Android if there is ADB driver - uninstall it
On N7 set to MTP, debug off and reboot with N7 USB cable connected to PC
It should re-install the ABD drivers on PC before N7 fully boots up
You will be back in action.

Actually for me, it's the opposite. If usb debugging is on I can't access the device to view files. Try disabling it?
yea thanks though everyone I got it to work. I had my old nexus and new drivers mixing up my ports for some reason not being able to access it at all

Device not detected in MTP but is in PTP?

So I unboxed this badboy maybe 2 hours ago, rooted, TWRP'd, but for some reason, Windows Explorer and WugFresh's toolkit won't detect the device. Here's where it gets odd. ADB command prompt detects it, that's how I rooted it, but WugFresh's toolkit doesn't. Nor does Windows Explorer and this is a pain when I'm trying to put all my music on here. Please note I have enabled USB debugging.
Also, it gets detected in PTP mode, but I don't have R/W access in PTP.
Any help?
UPDATE: Issue fixed, can a mod remove this?
Hey friend, same problem happened to me, my PC did not detect it but it got detected as ADM whatever
Try this, it may work for you, go to start on your pc, open device and printers, in that maybe your nexus 7 would be tagged as unspecified.
Open it up..... oh damn I forgot how I did it....
see open it up, and i think you have to select properties, and maybe you will find your nexus 7 with a different name, mine was names as Samsung Android Device, try uninstalling . Then remove your tablet and connect it again in PC, and also make sure your connection in your nexus 7 is MTP
it should work right now.
At least that's how I got my nexus 7 2013 to work.
Sorry if I didn't explain it properly, I just forgot how I did it.
