[Q] Volume up button - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Just wanted to confirm that holding the volume up button is supposed to keep increasing the volume right?
When I hold the volume up button on mine it only increase the volume by one step, the same as if I just press it once. However my volume down button decreases the volume continuously.
Just want to do a quick check before I return it.
Thanks.

Mine keeps going up until full volume.

Yes it should go to max volume if you hold it down. Are you 100% stock?

Confirmed, when you hold the vol up or vol down it should go all the way up or down.

Thanks guys and yes it was complete stock. No root no unlock. I returned it since they don't have anymore stock for exchange.

Reboot from download mode or frozen phone without battery pull

Haven't seen this anywhere and searching via my phone didn't turn up a previously existing thread about it.
regardless of the state if my phone I have always been able to force reboot without ever pulling the battery. Just hold power+ volume up+ volume down all at the same time for around 15 seconds. It will reboot while holding the buttons so just hold them till it reboots.
I apologize if this topic has already been mentioned.

I don't think the volume buttons have anything to do with it. You get the same result by just holding power.
Epic-ly tapped from my Galaxy S II
Yeah, holding the power button down until it reboots has never ever failed me. Not once.
...the volume buttons are just voodoo at that point.
Nice, thanks for the extra bit of knowledge and the correction. So nice not needing to do a battery pull.

Guess I'm in the minority, because I enjoy the battery pull lol

Hold search button for voice commands.
Now we're done
well if were gonna go there, hold home for recent apps
and i wish holding back would kill current app like in MIUI
Menu key opens menu (in apps that support it).
The volume rocker obviously controls the volume... And if you hold the volume down it puts your phone on silent with vibration.
Lol... Now were done here.

Home brings you to the home screen when in an app.

volume up and power until phone turns off and go into recovery
volume down and power until phone turns off and go into odin

Some ROMs allow for holding volume buttons to change tracks. I think we're done now ;p

Well, if you're going to get into the soft keys, holding Home brings up recently used apps and task manager. hold the search brings up an app selection including Sound hound if you have it installed.

Does anyone know if there is a way to manually assign something to a long menu press on stock? I know you can do it with CM7, but I haven't found anything for TouchWiz.
If your phone is on and you have cwm installed you can press and hold the power and volume buttons together and it will take you straight to recovery.

[Q] Can't boot into recovery? Any solutions?

Hello XDA fellas,
Earlier, I was browsing in the S3 section, and someone has ported the S4 camera apk for S3, so without hesitation, I flashed it onto my phone.
Immediately when I reboot, my phone wouldn't go past the boot animation, so I thought... Okay, I will just flash my nandroid backup then.
But what I found out now is giving me a heart attack, my phone doesn't go into recovery, instead, it reboots if I hold down Power + Vol Up + Down for more than 4 secs... so fine... I went to Odins and reflashed CWM with a Stock Rom, but it's still not getting past the boot animation.
If anyone has any solution to this... I would appreciate it if you can share with me what you know.
Thanks.
You need to hold home, power, and volume up at the same time

vol down + power = download mode
actually...took me a while to figure out too. i think every phone is different.
i hold power + volume up until i see the blue 'recovery booting' comes on, then i release the power button but still holding the volume up for about another 10sec or hold until i see recovery

If you hold volume up or down as the phone vibrates to restart or boot, you get recovery and download mode respectively. You don't even need to hold power. It's actually much easier than older Android phones. No secret, you're just doing it wrong. jk.
Give it a try though. Restart your phone, and as long as you're holding down the volume up button from the indicating vibration until the blue text shows up in the top left corner, then you can let go. Same goes for down for download mode, but it will immediately go to the warning screen.

The secret =

if i let go of the volume when i see the blue logo only.. then it takes me to the stock recovery..or some other recovery so i kept thinking my recovery didn't get flashed. but what i had to do was just hold the volume key longer. ..until my recovery boots up.
this only applies to my recovery mode, i think it has to do with the ota update which had a root locked kernel.

Isn't it vol up + home + power for recovery and vol down + home + power for download mode?

No need for the home button. If you trigger a restart from the os, you don't even need the power button.
If you're on the ota and are having trouble rooting, go into download mode and flash a custom recovery tar. Then when it auto resets, hold down the vol up button until the blue text in the upper left corner appears on the galaxy s4 splash screen. Boom you're in custom recovery

Sounds like your going into download mode and not recovery. just hold volume up and hit restart on the phone.

Volume keys turning on screen.

When I first setup my note II, I set it so the home button WOULDN'T turn on the screen and the volume keys would change music tracks. When my screen was off, I could hold volume up/down and the screen would stay off and the music track would change accordingly.
Recently, when I hold a volume key, the track will change, but then the screen will unlock. I've edited the gpio-keys file, but that didn't do anything.
Is there any way to figure out why the volume keys are unlocking the screen?
