Hello, I'm currently in need for odin on Mac OS X, because I'm an idiot and forgot to bring my PC with me. Help is greatly appreciated

I don't think that odin will work on a mac, even if you run bootcamp or parallels. I could be wrong though. I have tried it on my dad's mac with parallels and it would not work.

This wont root the phone for him. He will have to run Odin to install cwm & flash a rooted rom or run zergrush on the stock 2.3.5 rom

Yes I know. It a program so he can do it on a mac
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Not sure that alone will do, he needs the Samsung drivers. To avoid issues just bootcamp windows and root there, that's how I did mine

This has been asked and answered here previously, (1,2).
The file mentioned in the post above is a Wineskin wrapper for the Windows Odin program to run on Mac OSX. In other words it's the Windows Odin program running on Wine, on Mac OSX. However, the person that developed it posted this thread over on the android forums and the folks there that tried it, state that it didn't work. (Probably because the Wine emulation doesn't provide correct access to the USB ports).
To the OP, currently the only way to root the SGH-T989 is by using the Windows only program Odin. (The cross platform program Heimdall may be able to in the future, but right now there's this bug that keeps it from correctly accessing the SGH-T989). So this means if you have a Mac OSX computer, you need to install a full Windows OS. Either a multiboot installation of OSX and Windows using Boot Camp, or a full Windows OS, running in a Virtual Machine, like Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox. In terms of running Odin in Windows VM, this post describes success using Parallels, this post success using VMWare Fusion, and I posted here, that I successfully rooted my SGH-T989 using VirtualBox on Linux, (it should work similarly on OSX).
Good Luck..

I have a Win7 virtual machine installed on my Mac using VMware just for my occasional need for windows only apps, I booted into the VM and rooted 3 SGSII using that method. Virtualbox(free) should also work, but I haven't tried it.
Is it ok to use Odin on multiple computers because I don't have my laptop which I originally used too root my epic and I want to flash CM9 but I need to restore. So is it ok to install the drivers on my PC and restore on the PC? Thanks!

You can use odin from whatever windows pc you'd like as long as you have your drivers installed.

Absolutely. I have it on three different machines. Two home one laptop at office. Just make sure you have the drivers for the device loaded first. AND have a GOOD USB cable.
Thanks very much guys!

I just received my Galaxy S2 and am trying to root the phone. I followed the steps in the how-to but Odin is not recognizing my phone. Are there any tricks to get Odin to see my phone? I have kies installed on my pc.
Are you running kies and Odin as admin if you have windows 7? And did you restart your computer after installing kies?

I am pretty sure Kies is installed properly. Reinstalled a couple of times. I just tried to root again this morning but am getting a "Threat Detected" message when opening Odin with a threat name Trojan Horse Pakes.LGN. Same error on 2 diff computers.
I dl'd the zip file from a youtube site and have tried dl'ing from xda. Anyone have a link to a clean version?
Just to be sure, did you plug in your phone while running kies to let it find and install all the drivers for your phone? After that open task manager and kill anything that says kies or it can cause problems. This way always worked for me running Windows 7 dualbooted from a macbook pro.
Here is where I got all the root files from

What flavor of windows are you using? Does Windows recognize it? I have Win 7 and had to re-install Kies, updated it, and then ran as administrator in Win XP sp3 compatibility mode. Also, some have found hooking up the phone first, then opening Kies finds the phone, (Windows should see it first then ask what you want to do- click view files/folders and then minimize those windows). Just updated my GF's phone last night doing the above. Also, at certain points Kies may drop the phone, but reconnects and installs. Hope this helps.
Mmm try new ver odim or old one change cable or pc

Man, ive used odin a couple of times without any problem. I rooted and flashed su on 4.0.4 and then updated to stock jb and rooted using odin. What I meant by rooting is flashing a custom recovery. Yes, after all that I still flashed custom roms, lol, and yes, im now running a modified stock rom thanks to rushing who mixed the best mods and I just forget about tweaking and flashing many zips. Mobile hotspot working stock, priceless.

I believe kies is to be uninstalled before using ODIN.

That's not correct. I use Odin everyday and certainly do not uninstall Kies first. OP, have you tried different ports on your pc? Try them all. Another thing I read, if you are on a 64 bit machine, try creating a 32 bit virtual and doing it from there(last resort). Try doing it from a Windows XP computer(if not already). And try to flash back completely to stock, unrooted, and start again. See if any of those help.

Are you trying to root in download mode or with the phone turned on?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 4
root
It is in download mode. I heard people had this problem before but found no real answer.
Your are using the *.tar? Or you unzipped it?
Also try reinstalling drivers. Connect it turned on, let the PC recognize it. Then do do the same in download mode. Then disconnect the phone, open Odin an try again.
