[Q] stock rom with dc-hspap support - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

hello all hoping someone can help me out with this. i have been looking into the whole dc thing with the s2. i love that we have the ability to connect to the network but i really like the look and feel of the stock jb rom. i have tried to copy over all lib ril files but cant seem to get it to function. so im asking the community if either a>) someone can look into making one of the stock roms have the dc support or if there is already one out there. thank you for your time and ofcourse i will be willing to test it out as i am familiar with download mode

What do u mean about DC support exactly? If u mean the DC symble in status bar for signal reception then u already have it, in touchwiz or "stock" roms DC or "dual connectivity" is represented by the "4g" icon, DC icon only shows up on aosp roms, but if u check connection speeds with an app like speedtest.net u will see they have the sameish up/down speeds, basically all it is is a diff icon

well when dc network is being shown in the settings menu i can hit 16-19mbs d and 2-2.5mb up but on the stock rom it never goes past hspa:15 and i can only get a max of 11mb d and 2mb up. so there def has to be something more then just a symbol. in the build prop the lte setting talks about custom rils so i have been trying to bring the ril files to the stock rom to see if it can access the same dchspap:30 network that the custom roms do

[DEV][MOD][JB] T-Mobile Wi-fi Calling

A while ago, I downloaded a nandroid someone posted from their T-Mobile Galaxy Note II to see if I could pick it apart for wi-fi calling, but I don't use it so I can't really test it and I lost interest. Now, I've packaged up the Wifi Calling app with all of the libs it came with and added in the build.prop from the zip. It might be a lot more than what is needed, but I don't want to have to keep uploading bits and pieces. If you think you have an idea of what you're doing and want to try it out, go for it. I don't really know much about wi-fi calling at all so unless you have some sort of logcat, I'll be of little to no use to you at all. I guess that's about it...
You can use the ics wi-fi calling package to help you out by possibly using it as a reference/using parts/etc.
FOUND HERE
And here is what I've extracted from that 1GB+ package.
CLICK ME
Let us know what you find and good luck
If you feel you might need more files from the original nandroid just let me know.
Nice!

Hm... by the looks of it, it would seem that these are only settings for Wi-Fi calling. So it would seem that you'd have to mod the settings apk to have the option for WiFi calling settings. :/ I'll look into elgins (CM10) source sometime to see if I can add it in. If I can at least get the app starting somewhere, it will be easier for everyone else to debug/fix it up. If anyone has messed with the note 2 and can confirm that WiFi calling is accessed via settings and not launcher (app) that would be helpful as well.

This is gr8 news !Hopefiully someone can get going on this ,it can benefit not just the Glacier, but other devices as well that already have a fully working JB minus wifi calling.
From what I have seen and read on my HTC One S it is built into the frame work on JB so way above what I know good luck.
im gonna look into this and see what i can do

I'm thinking the setting could be added in way that is similar to this:
https://github.com/SyNtheticNightma...mmit/bfac7c05daab9f6294f7419ea6173c4a1c569092
Though I don't know the exact name of the package for the wi-fi calling settings... I'd need to decompile it to find that out (unless you know another way, I'm not too familiar with apks). I could also try whipping up an icon for this if you need one.
have you looked at this at all? http://code.google.com/p/the-ims-open-source-project-for-android/

Nice Find!!! I +1'd it
i saw it a while back, but have yet to try implementing into into a build or anything.
i compared this to ics wifi calling zip and none of the libs from ics zip is in the jb zip

Sorry for a late reply (haven't had the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-T889) so long...
Wifi Calling settings are located under Settings / More settings /
And includes two items: Wi-Fi Calling (this is to enable/disable with a check box), and, Wi-Fi Calling Settings (This offers Connection Preferences [Wi-Fi Preferred / Wi-Fi Only / Cellular Preferred}, and, Help)
For reference, the above menu structure/selections are based on Stock F/W 4.1.1, Build Number JRO03C.T889UVALL4
Is this still a work in progress or has it died?
it sure died.. adding wifi calling to JB has been a task for over a year..no dev has been able ot make this work...so sad.

3 major questions, help please?

I feel like a nuisance but I post everywhere and I can't seem to get an answer from any community or blog, as in an answer, I mean response haha.
Background, on T-mobile rooted and running PACMan ROM 20.0.1
1. I can't get my Wifi tether to work for free? Everyone says after rooting it should tether for free and not get the message, doesn't seem to work? Have the work-around by using the "Agent Switcher" on Google Chrome, but would still like to know why it won't work.
2. My phone's been stuck on 3G for a very long time. Possibly after I rooted and flashed the ROM, don't remember exactly but I haven't seen the H or 4G in over a month.
3. Super crappy battery life. If I leave my tether on for an hour. I lose 20%+ of my battery(tested it). Everyone's battery seems to get better after the rooting and such.
I try to follow all these steps on the forum and none of them work/remedy my solutions.
Iunno :/

1. Read more, I'm not positive on this but I think no matter what, they will eventually stop it. Unless you have paid for it, so pay for it I guess.
2. Flash latest modem, it will let h+ icon happen when cell data is requested. Been covered soooo many times.
3. Depends on what you do, how you use you're phone... my battery is always better on touchwiz ROMs but very good still on aosp style ROMs. Play with kernels and mess with settings to find what your phone likes. Not what mine likes what yours likes.

1. It works because it pretends to be a mobile device. It may stop working eventually, too, though.
2. Check that you have not lost your IMEI.
3. Use something like BetterBatteryStats and look at what is draining the battery and then make changes accordingly if possible or consider extended / extra batteries.

Before you even bother with that, when you're actually using your data i.e. doing the speedtest or stalking that girl on FB, does it switch from 3G to H? Because, rooted ROMs will show 3G until there is enough demand for it to switch to 4G speeds.

No, its still 3G uptop.
Test different modems/radios. The radios determine how your data works and testing different ones could fix your issue and also give different download/upload speeds. Just test each one and see which one works best for you Be sure to flash radios intended only for the T999. Otherwise, you will hard brick your phone.

Having troubles with signal on Cyanogenmod 10.1

I've been out of the Android game for awhile, so forgive my noobish questions.
I dont seem to be getting good signal at al.? The value fluctuates quite a bit (95-70, but usually 80s), which is really bad compared to when I'm on stock. Anyone else feel the same? It sucks because I absolutely love Cyanogenmod but I don't get anything more than 2 bars ever.
Is there a modem or something I can flash to get better service (I can't seem to find something about good ones)? While I'm asking questions, I might as well ask: How do I flash a modem? Is it as easy as flashing a zip from recovery immediately after installing Cyanogenmod?
Thanks in advance guys.
AOSP ROMs will display your LTE/EVDO/eHRPD signal strength while TW will only show 1x strength. That's why it seems like your signal strength is worse but it's really not.

Is there a way to fix that? And by fix, I mean is there a way to just display it on my phone the same waY TW does? I know it's not correct, but I would like to see more signal bars for my sanity.

Not that I know of. But I'm sure you could get a widget or app that will show your 1X strength.
Latest CM 10.1 gets no GPS signal for me. Data's never been excellent but decent. Also reboots randomly. Yikes!
Ya Samsung made this phone to run TW, I have pretty much accepted that fact as much as I like AOSP. I'm just going to have to buy a Nexus if I want it. So thank God for people like rompnit so I can turn a TW ROM into a complete AOSP look with MOAR.

To answer your second question, yes. Flashing a modem is as easy as flashing the zip from recovery (doesn't matter what ROM you flash, baseband is independent of it)
What you wanna do is head over to freeza's stock rooted thread and download the firmware flashable under "MD4 Firmware". Then just boot into recovery and flash it...and your modem is now up to date! Freeza also has flashables for the other modem's, so I would highly suggest going through a week with each one to find out which works best for the places that you frequent / travel to and then flash that and stay on it  :good:

I think you can do what you want yourself. Link above is a basic "How To" guide on changing icons in a system apk using Windows "Open Archive" functionality. What this means is you can use this method to edit/swap-out existing image files (png) without having to decompile/recompile the apk. If you need/want to start changing xml files however, you will need to decompile/recompile the apk. But for images, you can create/edit (using a Paint program or similar) existing pngs to your liking... or swap them out for other png files... the trick is to make sure the image dimensions are the same and the file name is EXACTLY the same as the one it is replacing (why? because the xmls are calling those images by file name... so png file names must remain the same as the replaced png).
I think the files you want to replace are:
"H" data icon is "stat_sys_data_connected_h.png" and
"H+" data icon is "stat_sys_data_connected_h_plus.png"
I'm not sure about AOSP roms... but on TW roms, these files are found in SystemUI.apk in the /res/drawable-xhdpi folder. Just read through the guide link above and I think you'll be able to change what you want. Just find a desired replacement png (4G, etc), copy, and rename to the ones above... then follow the guide. Remember: always do a backup first (/system /data etc) in case things go south. You can also make a copy of your current SystemUI.apk (before you change anything) and put it in a safe place (computer, external SD, etc) just in case. Hope this helps.
Hey thats Awesome. I'm at work now but when I get off. Ima go through your TUT.... I found the easy way ouy $2.99 on sale ...lol thanks for your input and TUT.

[Q] Problem w/hot-spot hack on CM10.1

Subject: Problem w/(4G?)-HotSpot hack on "WILD FOR THE NIGHT" CM10.1-20130316-d710 (base-band version EK02)
So, I was recently *given* a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" (p3113, WiFi only) by a buddy of mine, for helping him out with some significant things in real life. I know right? Very cool of my buddy. I'm in love with the tablet still (honeymoon period). It's not brand-new, but its new to me, so of course the first thing I did was root it, wipe it clean, and install unofficial a CM10.2 nightly build w/working IR from 080913. I'm staying on 080913 build since it's the latest build that supports TabletUI.zip, via Nova Launcher, which I also love by the way. Anyway, this tablet is the PERFECT compliment to my Sprint E4GT "Spider-Man Edition" (cracked screen, long story)
So, this recent tablet acquisition has given me reason to use the hotspot built into CM10.1, on my phone, under "Settings|More|Tethering & Portable Hotspot|Portable WiFi HotSpot. I had assumed up to this point that CM10.1 on my phone had the 4G hotspot hack pre-installed, but alas, when I use it to tether my tablet to get internet access on the tablet, only 3G mobile data appears to be working.
What gives with this? It'd been a while since I've been keeping up with the E4GT ROM/hack scene, so is there some hack zip that I need to install in order to take advantage of tethering and 4G on this ROM? Thanks will be given in multitude for any assistance. Thanks.

Edit... finally found out who made this app... TrevE....so thank him if it works for you
This appears to work as you said!! (Thanks given to your reply)
I configured the first option in the settings menu of this app for "Sprint Epic 4G Touch, and also enabled "Access Control" (whatever that means, care to explain that for me?) and, low-and-behold, turning on 4G is no longer ignored by this new hotspot app, like it is by the stock CM10.1 hotspot app. SpeedTest.Net confirms that 4G is actually in use. The differences in speed between 3G and 4G are only marginal at best in many locations, but that is on Sprint's crappy WiMax 4G implementation, and not the fault of the hotspot app you linked me to. With the SpeedTest.Net app, I'm getting about 0.8Mb/s average download speed while sitting at my desk in my office (indoors), when only 3G is enabled on the phone. but I'm getting about 1.7Mb/s when using this newly-suggested hotspot app with 4G enabled on the phone. So clearly it's working, and that that extra 1Mb/s (or sometimes slightly more) can be the difference between smooth video playback on YouTube (or whatever video app), versus frequent pausing for buffering when watching a video link sent by a friend to my phone. It's also makes Google Maps and Google Navigation much faster AND more responsive when I'm on the interstate, where the 4G coverage is generally pretty good here in the DFW area. SO, I'll kjeep you posted if I run across any major bugs,m but this suggestion appears to allow to now tether by tablet to my phone with actual 4G WiMax. Thank you SO much for your suggestions and links!

Thanks for the kind words... Being able to help someone out is the part I most enjoy about this site.. You can let me know about any issues you have , but just to make sure you know.. This isn't my app.. Just found a drop box link while looking for myself and others and it worked. I'm still not sure who made it..lol. It might say in the app, but I'm not currently using it as I'm on projectX ROM and its tether works great..
Hey there... thanks for the follow-up. Still working like a champ bro, AND it does something else that the stock tethering app doesn't do: it allows the ability to only allow "Approved devices" (by MAC address) to connect, in addition to (or I think even instead of) setting a WPA2 password. It even shows you in the phone's notification bar which approved devices are currently connected, and plays a custom notification sound when an unapproved device attempts to connect. Combine that with a home screen widget for 1-touch toggling, and the MacroDroid app set up to automatically turn on data and 4G when the tether app is turned on, and this is now officially the coolest thing on my phone. I know you didn't create it (nor did you ever claim to), but you did link me to an app that ended up exceeding my wildest expectations. THANK YOU BROTHER.

I know..its great.. When I found it...it was like finding a lost treasure.. Of course, now I'm on tw..so I don't need it..but you can bet I'll always keep a backup of this app..Thanks for the kind words... You can change the op title to solved. That way others might see it, if they need help or the mod's can delete if they deem it so.. Good luck.

Will this work on a rooted yet stock 4g? FWIW I'm not running Touchwiz I've got Nova.
Thanks as I've got the apk ready to go if someone gives me the thumbs up.

It will work..... and you are on touchwiz... you're just using a 3rd party launcher.. (Nova is one of my favorites )...
If you need help setting it up... I linked to my settings above.. you might have to play with it though as you are on tw.. I said I was on tw, but it was a custom rom that was tw based with a 4g hotspots hack... so I didn't need it.. Should work on stock rooted though...
Let me now

Thanks for that help! I configured it according to the link you posted but to no avail. It says it's running but I can't find the SSID when trying to connect another computer to it. I also don't see the icon on the top of my screen indicating that I'm connected to 3g. Is this app only for 4g?

No... it will work with 3g too.... try playing with the settings... remember, those settings of mine where for an aosp rom (slimbean)...
Also... if you decide you don't like it or can't get it to work... after you delete the app... boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache. This will get rid of the binaries installed by the app.

Thanks for all the help! Last night I changed the setup method to Softap for Samsung (master) and actually got the 3g icon to show and I thought it was going to work but I could not find the SSID and there were also errors recorded in the log. I'm at work now in an all metal building and can't get a signal but I will try again and report back. Thanks again!
Oh, and we're sure this setup, if I get it to work, is totally unknown to Virgin? I would hate them to boot me for doing this. (oh, and how ridiculous is it to charge for data that I'm already paying for!?!?) One reason I got the S2 from Virgin online is because it stated wifi tethering as a feature. Nowhere did it say I had to pay for this feature. But that's another story.

You should be safe from virgin knowing... atleast I've never been caught by sprint or boost..
As for the error's... I always had error's on my setup.. but it worked.. keep trying, I know there is a setup to get ya going...
If you end up not getting it to work.... you could try an app from the playstore... or as a last resort you could flash a custom rom based on tw.. the tw roms have working 4g hacked hotspots.. you would need to change you're apns once you have the new rom flashed so you have data.. no biggy there..

I can't get this or any tethering app to work. I've tried modding my build.prop file with the .tether.denied=false item as well - to no avail. I think it's because I'm on IceCream Sandwich??? Anyway, I'm rooted, stock ROM and all I want to do is enable wireless tethering. I really feel no need or desire to install a custom Rom. So, can I do it somehow? I am on the Epic 4G Touch forum, someone has to know.
Also, you mentioned clearing my delvik cache and something else but I have no idea how to do it. I tried installing clockwork mod but I could find no option for the Epic 4G Touch. There was an option to create a backup for the Epic 4G but not the touch. I figured at least if I did this I'd have the option of clearing the cache.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I see you said that you ( tried ) installing clockwork mod.. so I'm assuming you tried it with Rom Manager... I will say this once.. Do Not Use That To Install Recoveries on this device.. you will end up with a brick...
We have to use Odin, mobile Odin and there is a couple other ways ( involving a terminal emulator ) to install recoveries on this device.. You see.. our kernel's and recoveries are tied together.. So to install a custom recovery, we have to flash/install a custom kernel..
Let me ask you this.. how did you root and what superuser app are you using..

Yeah, I tried installing it with Rom Manager, I can go ahead and uninstall it then. I rooted using some solution I found online and honestly I don't remember what it was but it was very simple. I am using Superuser 3.1.3 (46). Was that what you were asking??
I really would hate to be one of those people who hasn't done their homework and then expects everyone else to answer their questions - I hate those people. I succesfully installed CM10 to my HP Touchpad so I feel pretty good being able to at least accomplish that feat.
Thanks for your help. Hey I guess if I make a successful backup of how my phone is now, I can play with other roms. Maybe this is the jumping in point for me right here. Thanks!
Now to figure out these damned captcha codes!

Ya.. this could be the start of you loving you're phone again.. :fingers-crossed:
I always suggest new people to read up before doing anything...
Also.. I suggest starting out with the touchwiz roms.. they will be more familiar to new users as well as a little easier to trouble shoot.. I believe..
They also have the better data speeds and the 4g hotspots hack..
Just read up.. if you need any help.. I'm always around.. but first things first.. read up on custom recoveries... once you have one installed with a kernel that will work for you're stock rom you can make a backup... you could make one with another custom recovery/kernel combo, but let's just keep it simple for now.
In rwilco's repo you can find just about anything you need... modems( read about ),kernel/recoveries, and many other things. Just remember and read about the emmc brick bug in ICS..
Being as you are new and not on JB.. a one-click for Odin on windows will be our first step if you choose to proceed. From there you can flash just about anything you want... I can link you to a little guide I put together for a really easy way to flash/install new roms, kernels/recoveries.
Let me know what ya think...

Thank you for the quick reply. I'll certainly take any info you give me. Like I said, I don't want all the answers, just a point in the right direction and ideas.

Start reading the stickies in the Android development section.. a very good starting point..
Also.. don't worry about asking questions.. we all start out as noobs.. lol. But you have the right attitude..plus.. when you find the answers yourself, I always think they stick better and you also get that feeling of accomplishment. You'll make a good member here with the way you are looking at it... but I also know that when you come to that first flash... it can be nerve racking.. So if you get stuck or not sure where to head.. just hit me up.. Good Luck..

Okay thanks. I'm still thinking about all of this. I'm thinking I'm not committed enough to do it right now and it may be a case of the cure being worse than the disease. I mean all I really want to do is make wifi tethering work. I'm afraid I don't have the time necessary to tinker with all of this esp since I am very happy with my Android user experience so far with this phone.
Besides the tethering fix, what other benefits would there be to installing a custom rom. Or... what would make a custom rom better than Jellybean? Is installing a custom rom the only way I can backup my current system?
Thanks again though for all of your help.

For me.. it's about customization.. Being able to change my status bar( color, transparency, icon, clock position, )..and many other things..
Also... I find that the custom roms are smoother than stock roms...
As for backing up you're system... you can backup you're data on a pc/mac...but if you're wanting to do full system backup's....I think rooting and a custom recovery are the only way to go.. ( but I'm not positive , as I've never looked into it.. )
