UPDATE statement.
As original author for this thread, videos and first demos, I'm not currently working on the Gingerbread port these days (heavily busy working on Voodoo sound improvements).
It doesn't mean I lost interest in it, only that I miss time at the moment.
CyanogenMod team work on a serious port of Gingerbread for Galaxy S, witch won't be just a technical demo like the original spirit of this one.
Of course, such goal requires a lot of work, dedication, and also some calm.
There is a lot of natural interest about Gingerbread on Galaxy S, and it's perfectly understandable too.
Giving an ETA until the porting work is done or some major advance is made would be dishonest.
It means that not asking for ETA will be appreciated. However, you're welcome discussing other aspects.
If you want more technical insights and a few updates by most actives developers for this port, i would recommend to follow:

Galaxy S with Nexus S kernel - Booting Nexus S Android Gingerbread
Videos are here:
http://www.youtube.com/supercurioxda
Early demo Releases - V6
Requirements
You must be root on your phone
Your /data must be converted in Ext4 by Voodoo lagfix or another Ext4 lagfix.
Verizon Fascinates are not yet supported - Epic4G will require a lot more development.
You must have proceed to complete backups before
Some busybox installation is also useful for tar.
Another Important note
Be sure you have access to the download mode using the 3 buttons combination.
If you don't, it will be extremely difficult (even if in theory not impossible) to to flash another kernel back.
Steps:
1/ Download this system dump on your sdcard:
system dump archive
2/ Run these commands
Code:
adb shell
su
cd /data
mkdir gingerbread
cd gingerbread
busybox tar zxvf /sdcard/system-dump-as-root.tar.gz
busybox cp -a /efs efs
sync
reboot download
3/ unzip the attached nsonsgs.tar.zip to nsonsgs.tar
4/ flash the kernel with Odin or Heimdall - no pit - no re-partition
Watch Gingerbread boot on your phone !
How do I get back?
Everything is still in place on your phone - no harm done.
All you need to do is to flash your preferred custom (that support Ext4 obviously) Kernel back on your phone
What's about this port:
- It uses the Nexus S kernel compiled from sources
- It runs the exact /system image release, we dumped on IRC from an actual Nexus S device.
Am i French ?
Now you don't have any doubt anymore
Which filesystem ?
This early preview runs on Ext4. no RFS at all, the kernel don't support RFS.
Does everything work ?
Nope, but there are progresses.
Don't work: GPS / Voice / camera
Work: everything else: like sound, GL acceleration etc
Will it work ?
I think most of it will work after countless hours spent on it.
Is it flashable with Odin ?
Won't be so easy, but it's one of the goals
Do you work alone ?
Credits go the IRC channel #NSdev on freenode, and now a team formed regrouping most Captivate/Vibrant/Fascinate/I9000 developers and CyanogenMod team, with Kernel and ROM developers and also newcomers.
When will this/that work ?
The only honest answer is: there is no answer.
Please don't ask for ETA, don't pressure developers, they need peace of mind
Is this Open Source ?
Everything is fully published under an open source license

And a lot of other ones now!
Versions:
V6
- Easy root. You only need to install Superuser app from Market.
Downloads :
Kernel you can flash with Odin / heimdall / kernel flashing apps
ClockWorkMod unsigned update.zip
V5
- Wifi semi-working (tend to crash the phone on Wifi sleep timeout)
- Calls working but no DATA for me (coolya had data, which means: erratic) - voice not tested.
- kind of laggy, but there is a lot of headroom.
- GPS working only by Wifi/Triangulation networking - No satellites.
Fantastic job by coolya who did most of the advancement, for Wifi, baseband and also OneDRAM partitions configuration. Really really awesome work.
We were so lucky the snow forced him to stay at home instead of going to work
This time you can really start to play with the phone, install apps, surf on the Internet all this with Gingerbread! kind of cool
V4
Buttons fixed thanks to the contributions of xcaliburhands, pawitp, fenfir
No need to create some directories manually anymore.
Kernel available as ClockWorkMod recovery update.zip - be sure you have access to 3 buttons !
V3
SDcard now works
- As internal storage
- As USB storage
V2
improved pre-init script and mounts:
no more insufficient space
improved dual-boot solution
faster boot
faster disk I/O
V1
initial
Edit: we started working now as a team, joining XDA forces with CyanogenMod.
Gingerbread CM is AOSP, which means the port will be the real Google experience, using clean source modified just as we need to.
Holy moly..... I can't wait! Thanks Curio (and any other devs)!
I wonder how fast this ROM will be! 2.2.1 is smooth as butter as it is!
That was quick! I saw the title before saw who posted I thought it was just going to to someone asking for eta's... Nice work!
LOL are u serious? Doc was trying to run it the other day but couldn get pass the boot screen haha
Let's wait patiently for the port, and let the dev do his work.

HAHAHA I'm hoping Samsung hire some of these devs! And I guess there's not much use of a "Nexus S" now that the Galaxy S is able to run what the Nexus S runs.

[DEVS ONLY]
I want to start this thread to keep up the progress on the port.
the bad news is that the SDK is incomplete for now, so (like other devices)
we will have to write our own code for the OS, the nook community
has done a wonderful job writing their own libraries and stuffs, so we will have to do the same.
Instead of pursuing different goals, let's focus on one thing at a time.
since GSM and CDMA versions are already out, it seems we suffer the same bugs, so for now let's unite strength and knowledge to overcome these.
I propose that the first goal to fix is the SurfaceFlinger, so we could at least see the apps, the buttons and the notifications.
it is currently throwing this:
04-06 22:01:35.495: ERROR/Surface(2960): dequeueBuffer failed (Out of memory)
this could lead us that it might coudln't start because of some malloc malfunction or something.
also that pvrsrvinit bugs me a lot.
update:
8/APR/2011
since DiP7 could fix SurfaceFlinger and other things using a different build from the GSM kernel, we have to dig deeper

Mmmk.. Let me tell you a story.
A long time ago in a galaxy far away... No, that will take too long. In a nutshell, one third of the answer is here, another third is here and the rest is here. I'm not trying to be intentionally vague, I just haven't figured out how these three fit together yet.
Of course, there could also be some bit of code that I missed... some telling line in a debug log that I overlooked or some driver or library that I could have decompiled to sift through its juicy secrets. There could easily be a fix that would take seconds to add and make the whole thing fall in line...
Or we might have to work it from the ground up.
Either way it will happen. It's just a matter of whether it will happen next week, or next month.
(Watch it be a misplaced semi-colon, or a bad symlink... that's how these things go.)

The kernel source that you have linked to is 2.6.35.7 for the Nexus S gingerbread and is not fully maintained by samsung but rather by google.
However I do not think you are wrong that there is a problem somewhere in the kernel. The kernel that has been released for the galaxy tab is a mess of horrid code, I have had to re-write parts of kernel drivers just to get them to work under linux, I would not be surprised if similar patches are needed for honeycomb

Yes, and it contains some support for our device (s5pc110), and some more that can be added (pvr) and the architecture necessary to fully support HC without patching the build itself. If we work only towards patching the system build to communicate with the hardware, we won't be able to run AOSP hc versions when the source drops without going through the same painstaking process of hacking the system to function (while creating numerous faults causing FCs in the process). If we build a new kernel, we can get the hardware to communicate in the way future android versions want it to and we can then do what we want with ease.

Not enough really, PVR kernel module sources have been released from samsung for our device, and is available in update1 zip.
The kernel panics and we have no framebuffer from the nexus s, believe me that is the kernel I want to be running for my project, it is cleaner nicer and things are implemented overall better. unless you know of a solution for kernel debuging over usb

Hi everybody,
I have made a free application to install any kernel on your SGS very easily.
The idea is that there is a website where kernel are uploaded with a script and an application to:
- search
- download
- install it on your phone.
The application and the website are not limited to install kernell but I think it is a good way to try it.It can execute any script in the android shell.
So I have made some script for some kernel, there are so much that I have not the time to make one for each of them.
To make a script is very easy, I have attached an example of one I have uploaded on the website. If you need to attach a file, put it in a zip and upload both (the script and the zip) through the upload form on the website,
The address of the website is:
http://www.2borange.com/
A general thread on XDA (not dedicated to kernel on SGS) about the application:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14875954#post14875954
You need to create an account to upload but it is not mandatory to just search, download and install a kernel.
Please keep me informed if everything work or not. I have only test it on my phone.
For the author of the kernels: I am sorry to have not yet informed you of the sharing of your great work, I will do it for sure when I will have done enough test to offer you an interesting way to share your work.
For the user: if you have time, don't hesitate to upload some scripts, it is free and easy to do...
Thank you for everything,
Michael

Thank you for your message.
I did not know about this application. I have read the description and I can tell you the purpose of mine is totally different.
I have understood that Nedar application is to install a Kernel that you have already downloaded and copy on your SDCARD.
The purpose of my application is to download automatically a script and a zip file, and execute the script.
So there are 2 main differences between these two applications:
- my application get files you need directly from the cloud (Internet), so it is like a deposit of files
- my application is not limited to kernel installation, it is just a usefull example to show people how it works, but it can do more, really lot more tasks.
However, because the application of Nedar is dedicated to one particular task, it has option I have not yet implemented in mine. By example, I have not yet construct a script to backup the kernel in an update.zip file, which could be very usefull.
So they are really very different. I hope I will be able to construct more script, but may be the biggest difference with any dedicated application is that anyone can participate to my project without any knowledge in Java programation.
You just have to know a little bit about shell to be able to share your work with others.
THAT IS THE REAL PURPOSE OF THIS APPLICATION : SHARING!
Amazing concept!
Thumbs up for the foresight for such a nice project. If enough effort is put I can see in next couple of months, the whole, ROM, Kernel, Modem flashing automated.
Right from finding the correct software till installing them and may be some debugging and fault finding as well!
Will definitely donate in case the project takes off the way it should!
Great work Snoopy!
Loving the concept of this!
As omzworld was saying, if this grew into a script that could automatically install your ROM/kernel/modem etc. that would be awesome, especially for people who are new to flashing.
Now, here's another suggestion that may or may not have been thought about already..
Is there any way to make the app look at your phone and use that as a basis for roms, kernels etc. ? If that was possible, anyone and everyone would be using your app to flash because they would know that bricking their phones would be almost impossible.

The thing I need now is not money, donation,etc... but report of test and ideas of improvment.
By the way, I only have a samsung phone, and I am wondering if there are possibilities to install kernel in other phone only by using the shell, have you an idea ?
Second question: have you an idea how to proceed to install an entire ROM through the shell ? I suppose the phone has to be rebooted before installation begin and lauche in a recovery mode, but how to make it automatic like in ROM Manager?
Thank you for your help!

Hey snoopy33, why do you have not yet updated this page?
Well this thread is dedicated about the possibilities of getting a port of ubuntu phone os. Recently displayed and would be launched around MWC 2013, Ubuntu OS will be launched for galaxy nexus! .
although there are short threads present about the topic, aim of this thread would be to provide Support/Bug-Report/F.A.Q if any port of ubuntu shows up for our phone from our great developers.
This is refreshingly new OS.
HERE IS THE LINK TO THREAD--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174544
I am damn sure some-one will take up this great job
Latest: Ubuntu Phone OS Porting Guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
Some of Features of ubuntu phone:(taken from wikipedia)
OS family Unix-like
Working state Current
Source model Open source
Initial release February 2013; 30 days' time
Available language(s) Multilingual
Update method Ubuntu Software Center (+ APT, …)
Package manager dpkg
Supported platforms i386, ARM
Kernel type Monolithic (Linux kernel)

So what may be the hindrances:
What kernel version is it based on
will it require bootloader unlock ;-(
UBUNTU PHONE OS
since it is yet to be released this is an open discussion, if any developer takes this project for defy, this thread will be a F.A.Q/support/Bugreport thread (if ever it happens )
i'm here for tests.
i'm not a developer, but you guys can count with my defy+ for tests. I really would like to have ubuntu phone on my defy+.
I'd love to see Ubuntu Phone OS on Defy. First of all it's based on Android kernel so there wouldn't be much difficulty for it. The sources should be out next month. Also we'll need to find a method to dual boot with a custom kernel because it's less likely for someone to use it as a primary OS.

Will be very nice to see ubuntu working natively on ours Defy but the specification for minimal resources is beyond the possibilities of defy. So it can be ported but will be very laggy IMHO.

Not that beyond. Min specs (as stated here) only ask 4-8GB internal storage for an entry-level ubuntu phone, everything else (CPU clock, minimum RAM and multitouch capability) already cover our phone. Plus, as far as I remember (though I can easily be wrong on this, since I haven't touched an Ubuntu machine for months, now), this OS (specially considering it was specifically deployed for running on phones) doesn't take more than 2GB when installed. Again, I can be wrong, BUT... What about multiboot? A class 6 8GB card (or even a class 4, like the one included with our phones) may do the job, and we will still be able to boot CM10+ and ask silly questions to Google Now.

I may be wrong, but I think I read in more than one place it'll be available as a flashable zip. Since the folks there at Canonical were able to boot this little beauty in a Galaxy Nexus, and they intend to release the GNx version (without many workarounds needed to install) before the end of january, I think it's pretty safe to bet on a recovery-flashable zip file. Last, but not least, I think an install script (like the ones devs use in current Android flashable zips) may be slightly modified to install Ubuntu from a system image, specially if you consider Aroma-based installers are doing wonders in matter of personalizing Android installations. This not considering (and in this matter I have absolutely no idea) the possibility of the disk installer of linux distributions be already running scripts very similar to those used on Android flashable zips to install desktop OSs on computers. Devs will be better suited to tell about the latter.
P.S.: if anyone there tried Android-x86, you guys can see the installable image is very similar to an Ubuntu (or any other linux) installation zip. This might lead us in the opposite direction, looking at which modifications were made for the installer to work with Android, and reversing them for a Ubuntu installer to work in a flashable zip.

Not that beyond. Min specs (as stated here) only ask 4-8GB internal storage for an entry-level ubuntu phone, everything else (CPU clock, minimum RAM and multitouch capability) already cover our phone.

Is nice that you are very optimistic with this. I wanna be so but ... the entry level processor is a Cortex9 ! which is more powerfull than ours and Ubuntu is based on 3.4x kernel and necesitate a bigger system ROM to install (ours is ~350MB). Anyhow will wait and see and ... speculate.

It may depend on how far our devs will be able to strip down the OS for our phone, I think we may not require full fledged running desktop compatibility but it still depends by what extent we can strip down the footprint!

Droidkit OnePlus One Windows
Hey guys iTechy21 here and I am glad to announce I have a NEW project I'm working on to make an open source toolkit made from c# to allow easy development for other devices. This project will aim to support as many devices as possible with different toolkits for different devices therefore unifying the experience between them.
This will also be 100% open source when fully complete and is released under the GPLV3 licence (apart from the stuff I did not develop e.g. Custom Recoveries, root.zip, adb / fastboot and stock software all rights go to their respective owners).
Features
Support for any android version and Rom
Full Backup and Restore of apps + data (Nandroid is in the works...)
Unlock / Lock your bootloader (removed locking due to possible issues)
Flash a custom recovery (all supported including stock)
Shows attached device(s) in status bar
Advanced CMD mode for power users - type any ADB Command you want!(Will be reimplemented!)
Booting the device into and out of fastboot with a button click
Flash back to stock (Lollipop!) and keeps your bootloader unlocked
To come
Flash 100% stock DONE!
Save backups with custom names DONE!
Install APK's through ADB DONE!
Flash zip via recovery commands DONE!
Improve UI to make it look cleaner...
Backup the EFS Partition (will be coming Soon) DONE!
Log screen to help amateurs with adb learn (and also output errors to be more verbose) Abandoned due to too many issues
Ability to change colour theme from light to dark and the colours (coming Soon™)
Improve OTA system (continuous)
I am accepting requests if they are not too obscure to find out (even better if you find a way to do it as it cuts down on my research time which I don't have a lot of )
Legal
This is an unofficial toolkit made by an independent developer who has no association with oneplus apart from the fact that he owns a 64gb Sandstone black phone. I cannot be held responsible for anything that may happen to your phone! Even if it is just exploding, catching fire or just voiding the warranty.
Changelog
Material 0.0.1.5 ) - Major Milestone! - Untested Oxygen OS flashing. Do-so at your own risk! (Might not work not fully tested)
Improved theming
Updates to internal .dll's
Stability improvements
UI Tweaks
More verbosity via dialogue messages
System requirementsTo run this needs an x86 or x64 based system (Not supported on Windows RT)
And version 4.5 of the .NET framework (which is installed upon install if missing (needs testing!) and requires Windows 7 or Higher (sorry XP users )

FAQ
Q: How do I do X?
A: You click the button corresponding to the action
Q: How do I flash to stock and then unlock the bootloader?
A:
You put your device into fastboot mode.
Once done select your device model (16Gb or 64Gb) and then click flash to stock.
The Bootloader should stay unlocked after the flashing process...
Q: What Roms do this ToolKit support?
A: Any android based ROM with the ADB Debugging interface!
Q: Help it's not working!
A: Try 3 things.
Re-installing the toolkit to re-install the drivers
Enable ADB in the developer settings (tap on build number (in about phone) x times until you get a toast notification)
Update the ToolKit
I found a Bug!
Great and thanks for finding one! I can now hopefully track it down and fix it if you provide the following:
The Computer's OS
What you were doing
How you can reproduce this
Your device
The code from the message that appeared
This will help me track down and hopefully fix the error. And once open sourced these can be reported via GitHub!
Please be aware that messages that just say "HELP" or "IT CRASHED" will be ignored as they don't help...

I knew that would be an issue. That's due to the fact it includes all the stock files for CM11S. However I will make it possible by downloading it within the app unzipping it and then flashing the device. But I'm fairly novice at c# and I don't have a lot of time to develop at this moment in time...

Thank you I'll finally get noticed for something XD
... It works great but the size is a big deal.
Also, i suggest that ... you show what version of recovery you will flash - TWRP ( is generic and the filename does not gives you clue, the same for the others )
Also, for the Stock firmware ( wich version is it ?! )
SuperSU is not updated ... you could improve and use the last stable from chainfire
all the other things looks great so far.

Hey guys iTechy21 here and I am glad to announce I have a toolkit I have made. This is my first toolkit and is currently still being developed (adding / tweaking features) to allow you to easily do basic adb stuff and more advanced things are coming when I have time to develop this :silly:
This will also be 100% open source when fully complete but is released under the GPLV3 licence (apart from the stuff I did not develop e.g. Custom Recoveries, root.zip, adb / fastboot and stock software all rights go to their respective owners).

Can we have more mirrors (faster ones)? Like MEGA? Google Drive is kind of slow :cyclops: Great work!:good:

Thanks for the feedback. I may improve that make to another form with information on the specific versions (along with a built in download tool). Along with updating the SuperSU.zip
The first thing I'll do is work on that once all the basic features are there. But generally its the latest version of TWRP that is stable along with the other recoveries...
As for the stock I think the one I included was 44s but it may be 5Q (ew). Ill be implementing a downloader for the stock images to download whatever the latest version is from cyanogen...

I'll see what I can do but the size will be reduced in the next update as it will remove the stock zip and replace it with a downloader which will download the stock images and then flash them reducing the size massively... (but I use Gdrive as its easy to find the download link unlike with Dev-host...)
I can´t flash twrp with this toolikt any one have a clue?
Do you have the adb drivers installed? Or is it throwing an error?
Updated to fix issues, add ota support, install APK's and improve performance

Is "fully complete" v1.0.0? I'd love to stretch my C# muscles a bit.
EDIT: I can't read. Sorry.
dont worry about it
we always have moments... Its almost ready but I don't have a lot of time to develop so it may take me a while to get everything in there....
Just improving the ota updater now as its throwing exceptions...
Download link is not working. Please re-up. Thanks
