[Q] Heimdall Linux How To? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance on using Heimdall on Ubuntu. I have everything installed and the phone is detected. To my understanding I can take a stock rom and unzip the TAR.MD5 and I will get the files I need to load into Heimdall. I want to create a complete restore back to stock like using the UVDMD5.tar.md5 in odin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Seriously no one knows anything about Heimdall?

I've been hunting high and low to figure this out. I'm down to needing the partition ID's for our device. Looks like I need partition identifiers for the following files. aboot.mbn, boot.img, cache.img.ext4, NON-HLOS.bin, recovery.img, spm.mbn, sbl2.mbn, sbl3.mbn, system.img.ext4, tz.mdn
Any help appreciated.

[Q] Any Heimdall Firmware Packages for the SGH-T989?

I want to use Heimdall, (links 1,2), with my SGH-T989, NOT Odin. I just need to find the appropriate Heimdall Firmware Package to use with this phone, since I don't think I can roll my own. There's a great thread here that provides Heimdall Firmware Packages for stock GT-I9000 firmware, but I've not been able to find anything similar for the SGH-T989. BTW, I don't care if it's a stock, or custom firmware package, just something so I can get my feet wet using Heimdall with my phone.
Thanks..
extract the tar. load into appropriate slots in heimdall

I appreciate the response, however I tried to look into this, and I'm unsure of how to proceed. (Excuse any inaccurate terminology here..)
To be clear, what I would like to do, is use Heimdall to root my SGH-T989 and install CWM on it, just like the Odin method everyone is currently using. I assume that this means flashing, not an entire ROM, but a small amount of code, to the appropriate place on the T989. (Would it be correct to say that you're flashing a CWM "boot loader" to the phone?) I know that after using the Odin method, you have a phone with the exact same software on it as before, however you have root access to the OS, and you can boot into CWM recovery for flashing ROMs, or Themes, etc. So I know it's not a lot of code that initially gets flashed to the phone in order to accomplish this. (Would it be accurate to say you're only flashing a boot loader and an unrooted kernel?).
For example, the galaxys2root.com website has a howto for using Heimdall to root, the AT&T Galaxy S II (SGH-i777). The webpage howto includes the steps for installing Heimdall, and a Heimdall Firmware package, archived together in the GalaxyS2ATTRootZedomaxMacLinux.zip file downloadable from the webpage. I don't know if the zImage file included in the GalaxyS2ATTRootZedomaxMacLinux.zip archive, is the same Heimdall Firmware package I could use to root the SGH-T989. I've examined the file with a hex editor, but can't tell what's in it. Also, since it's possible to brick a phone by flashing the wrong thing to it, I've instead tried to ask if anyone already has an appropriate Heimdall Firmware package for accomplishing this.
If it's easy to create such a Firmware package using Heimdall, (I have it running on my Linux laptop right now), and the appropriate files, any help identifying the files and steps necessary to create the firmware package, would be very appreciated. Otherwise, if anyone knows of an appropriate Heimdall Firmware package for rooting the SGH-T989, please feel free to post the information.
Thanks again..
In case anyone searching for Heimdall SGH-T989 support, finds my posts. While it would be great to have Heimdall Firmware Packages available for the SGH-T989, it's not likely to happen until Heimdall can communicate correctly with the phone first. Hopefully it's something that will be added to a post 1.3.1 version.
Thanks..

[Q] Trouble-shooting and making a tar.gz

So I'm hoping I'm posting in the appropriate place, and if not please feel free to point me in the right direction. There may be threads that already exist that are what I need, but I find it so hard to find the right thread on this website so after lots of trying I figured I'd just post.
I have Samsung Galaxy S III on WIND Mobile (SGH-T999V) which is said to be identical except in name to the T-Mobile Variant. I tried a few different ways to get root, and since the first which involved CWM weren't working I ended up using Odin to install (flash?) a file called root66.tar from god knows where. I acquired root, but every time I go to flash any Mod (through recovery > apply zip from sd), whether its CM9 or an update pushed to my phone from Wind, i get a status 7 report (I think it's checking for my devices product name to see that it matches whatever the thing is designed for and it doesn't check out?)
I've heard that this is a problem with CWM and all I need to do is flash the latest CWM or a different CWM. I've tried downloading the CWM app, and manually flashing, etc etc, none of it seems to actually change my recovery. Maybe I'm just missing something, but I'm quite sure the recovery simply is not being flashed.
So I found this thread for T-Mo variant that sed to get on root explorer and delete a couple files, which I'll probably try if nobody responds quickly, and hopefully nothing bad will happen, but I wanted to confirm that this will be safe for Wind variant.
Also, I'm freaking out a little inside and want to revert back to my stock ROM, which I found. The thing is it's in zip file and i'm unable to flash .zip. My Windows computer is out of commission and I only have Linux Mint, for which Odin doesn't work, so I have this program called Heimdall. I'm wondering how to package a tar.gz file, what is a tar.gz file? Why not just use a .tar file? or a .gz file? What's the difference. Basically, when I give Heimdall my tar.gz file, whats it gonna do with it?
Any thread-pointing or explanation would be super appreciated! Thank you in advance
edit: In regards to Heimdall, I've looked at some guides, they all site older versions, which appear to be different? the only flashhing I can do is either thru a Heimdall Firmware Package, which I don't know how to make but I'd like to learn, or with a PIT, which I dont have or understand, so any help there would also be good
The files you are supposed to delete are safe to do so. Or you can rename them. Either way will work. Once you do this you can now install recovery from rom or goo manager. Use the app to reboot recovery as well. Very easy.
You don't flash zip files from the computer. You do that in recovery.
There are also other ways to flash. I suggest you read through my firmware thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
Pay attention to Mobile Odin, it may be your easiest and safest way to flash stock firmware.
You got root66.tar from god knows where???
Don't take this the wrong way but it sounds like you are getting a little careless and could cause more problems than you started with.
Do not flash anything except what you find in this forum. Aside from custom roms you should find everything you need in that thread.
Id also suggest reading the stickied threads in this section as well.
Good luck!

Haha, I know you flash .zip from recovery. I meant I'm unable to flash .zip through recovery, and I can't use Odin to flash any .tar for example, so I thought if I could learn how to use Heimdall, learn how to package a 'Heimdall Firmware Package', that'd be safest.
Anyhow, Thank you, I will be more careful
Edit: checking back in, I went to delete the files
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/install-recovery.sh
They're nowhere to be found. I looked around other places like /root/system, and /mnt/system, still nothing. Any ideas?

Sorry I really font know anything about heimdall. That's why I suggested looking into mobile odin. It will let you flash the firmware from the phone itself. The free version here on xda won't root the fw during flash like the paid version will.
If those files aren't on your phone then don't worry about them. They rewrite stock recovery every boot.
You can try this to get flashing to work in recovery:
Open /system/build.prop and wherever it says d2can, change it to d2tmo. And change T999V to just T999.
Make a copy of the original first and save to your external sdcard.
Now reboot recovery and try to flash again.

[Q]Need help with Odin/returning to stock

I am using this guide to return to stock so I can send in for warranty because my USB port is busted.
I want to know, for the Mobile ODIN, can I flash the .tar file found directly on the google developers page? Or do I need a specially-made Odin .tar file?
I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks!
Which gnex do you have? Google provides .tgz, so yes, you need a .tar file. or .tar.md5..
GSM sorry forgot to specify

[Q] Some help Please

Hi Guys!
I need some help here. I have a galaxy s3 I747M . After I loaded the lastest 4.3 Jellybean I lost use of my USB port. I've tried everything I can do to make it work. Nothing has worked. I was on the phone with Samsung for 2 hours trying to fix this issue. I can charge my phone using the port, but that's all I can do. A house hold of Samsung phones, so I have tried all 6 other cables in the house etc. PC's don't see my phone(I've tried 5 different pc's btw) Nothing has worked. The highest Tech support Samsung can offer didn't help either. Seems under my Application manager under all apps. The USB setting is doing absolute nothing. Sitting at 0.00B... Tech guys says something went wrong with the loading of the 4.3 firmware. So he regrets to tell me that my phone is no longer under warranty and there isn't anything he can do. Like I mention I have hard reset to factory settings 4-5 times and nothing works. I know someone is going to say did you check off the Debugging... Yes I have. So there you go. I am unable to use ODIN to reflash firmware because the usb port doesn't work.
If someone can help me, that would be terrific. I should mention that I also tried using the SD Card and tried loading some firmware that I downloaded and tried using the Recovery Option boot to try to load the firmware that I got but I keep getting a error of "E Signature verification failed"
Samsung Galaxy S3
SGH-I747M
4.3 firmware
I747MVLUEMK5
Rogers Network Canada
Did you try different operating systems? You won't be able to load any custom software with a custom recovery.
I haven't no, I'm not sure how I would go about this. Like I mentioned, I've tried to put a md5 on my SD Card and tried to update that way, but keep getting an error. "E Signature verification failure" If I'm way off on how'd I'd do this, please do tell. I'm desperate and am willing to try anything...

If you are rooted, and were previously updated to 4.3 firmware, and if im reading correct are just trying to reflash that firmware, you can try using Mobile Odin. It won't flash the full firmware, but will do the kernel, modem, system and cache. Might be worth a shot. Otherwise look for a recovery flashable zip for the firmware. The .tar.md5 can only be used by Odin or Mobile Odin.

Hey Thanks for the reply "DocHoliday"
I am not rooted. I wish I was. I've poked around and I'm not sure how to use an .img file. I tried to put it on a micro SD and open it. I get a "E: Signature verification failed" Now all I did was throw the whole zip file on the SD card. Not sure if I have to extract it or what. If you can shed some light on how to do this I'd be a happy camper. All I can find is a JB 4.1.1 flashable zip.. I know i'm 4.3...Will this one work?
No. Do not flash older firmware over 4.3. It'll brick. Older roms are ok, but not the firmware. Can you link to what you are trying to flash? You said you were using an .md5 file earlier, but now you said you tried an .img and a .zip? I'm kinda confused as to exactly what you are trying to flash at this point. Zip files are for flashing in recovery. .tar.md5 files are for Odin. .img files are used differently.

Well Doc, I'm kinda confused as well, LOL... I was using odin files at first. not really knowing what i'm doing. I'm kind of starting to understand a few things like, .tar & .md5 files are used with Odin. I can't use odin because my usb on my S3 isn't working. So i'm trying to flash my firmware to either earlier(which I can't because i'm not rooted) or the same. In hopes to try to fix my usb port. My firmware is corrupted. So i've tried to put a stock 4.1.1 recovery zip on my sd card. But when I restart the s3 in recovery mode, and choose the zip file I get "E;signature verification failed" and it does nothing. I can't find a stock img zip file for i747M Rogers canada 4.3... I'm thinking i'm doomed here. What do you think??

[Q] SGH-I467 soft bricked, NEED 4.4.2 stock system and recovery dump

Hello all, I have an AT&T Galaxy Note 8.0 (SGH-I467) which had stock firmware version 4.4.2 (NI2). I attempted to flash the pre-rooted I467UCAMF1 image, ended up wiping out the SYSTEM partition since flashing the system partition fails from both stock and pre-rooted I467UCAMF1 system.img. Everything else except cache.img, and sboot.bin were flashed to the device.
Now the tablet says software unauthorized by AT&T installed (or something similar. I've found the NI2 stock kernel, and I'm able to flash it
Would someone with a working SGH-I467 running I467UCANI2 PLEASE dump their recovery and system partitions? I had no idea beforehand that NI2 odin isn't available anywhere on the internet, not even through KIES. I've tried hacking system.img dumps I have available, but haven't been able to get my hands on a I467UCANI2 system.img. Thanks for your help!
Can you tell me how to do the recovery and system dump for you? I'm willing to try, but don't know that process.

@K1979C20 figured out that kingroot 4.1 works to root 4.4.2 on the sgh-i467. After rooting, I used an app called "supersu me" to remove kingroot and install supersu. Now I'm rooted and have supers installed!
Now we need to figure out a few things... like how to pull the factory 4.4.2 image and create a flashable or odin image for getting out of a jam in the future... then maybe how to port/flash a rom...
I have signed up to beta test for the flash fire app from @Chainfire, so even though we don't have a Normal recovery like twrp/cwm... we still have the possibility to flash a rom using flashfire.
If you can send me instructions I will dump the partitions you need and send them to you.

Hi, it's been a long time, but were you able to dump those partitions? I'm stuck up with the same issue, any help would be highly appreciated.
Hi friend. I found a link of a system dump for sgh-i467 kitkat 4.4.2, but I dont know how to make them work to odin. maybe you can or someone here can make it.

Have you made in headway on this? Kinda curious
