It's not possible port the whole rom but at least you can theme your rom close to TW

I'm not expert, but I believe this is no easy task. It would require a lot of deep integration and lot of work.
I doubt it will be done.

It has no sense, since it would take very long time to do that, and it wouldn't even work well. And to make it some "stable", it would take too much time, time that I don't think anyone has. You can port some apps or make it look like samsung tw, as the comment above me said, but you won't be able to get multi-window or such, as I guess you want.

Why didn't you just buy a Samsung Note 8?
I have no problem with multitasking on the N7. Compared to my Note 2 which has pretty much the same multitasking capabilities as the N8, I'd go with the N7. Multi-windows isn't something I really use. Looks pretty but rarely has much real world use for me.

[Q] Mini Apps?

Just wondering if mini apps are capable on the note 2 like the note tablets. I realized the multiwindow kind of makes of for this and i realize the screen is a little small to clutter with windows but it was still a nice feature.i haven't been able to get my note 2 yet, can't wait haha, but until then i was just hoping someone might pick up on this and develop a rom with mini app capability (if it isn't already a feature haha) Thoughts?

Galaxy S4 apps requested

If i was to get a galaxy s4 stock rom and extract the apps (not all of them just a few that i seen and like) and then push them into the nexus 4 do you think the app would work correctly work???
Most of the Samsung apps need touchwiz framework and few other things to work. So if you just push those apps to system they will not work.

You can get s4 launcher with samsung framework so there isnt problem with framework.

That is why its great having an AOSP device. We have the base to add anything we want in top of it.

Having played with my friends s4 for a few hours I honestly feel like the s4 apps are worthless. They cause a ton of battery drain and really make the phone feel sluggish. Don't bother

the only reason i dint go for samsung and bought a LG (first yet) is because of samsung bloatware
i love the launcher and a few more stuff but trying a s4 in my nearby mall made me feel that buying a nexus was totally worth it (a snapdragon 600 quadcore was laggy)
Did anyone find a way to port the camera app or the ability to multiview? (More interested in camera)
A lot of this stuff particularly multi window is probably hard to port.
-Sent from Marino's Maxx-
Multi-window is implemented deep within the touchwiz framework, so porting it will be difficult. However, PA has sort of implemented a floating window view, so in the future we might see a multi-window feature that's independent of touchwiz and whatever-LG-call-theirs.
OP, good luck with trying to get other apps ported over. Some of them should be possible, but the camera app is most likely hardware dependent, so you might have some issue with that.
To everyone else who's expressing their opinion on touchwiz app, this is not a discussion thread. If you want to express your hatred for Samsung apps so badly, go start your own circlejerk thread in General Discussion.
do you think email app can be extracted from S4 and ported over to S3?
It would be easier to get an S4, and replace TW apps with AOSP apps. You can stripe TW down to look AOSP, and still use all the TW apps you like.By buying a Google Device like an N4, your pretty much locked into using AOSP apps. Porting TW apps these days to AOSP devices is pretty difficult, and not worth the time.
Only Thing I truly want from the S4 is the message App!!!!
You can send them all the pics you want and it wont show up as a Slideshow!!!!!
Stupid that Android hasn't adressed this issue.
That's the one thing that iOS got right and so did Samsung!
I would love to have the camera and gallery app, even if some dev copy the new features and put it in a their own app I would love. Animated Pictures :victory: like... GIFs... with your camera... :victory::victory::victory::victory: and sound :victory::victory:

Uh, actually the Snapdragon 600 is supposed to be faster than the S4 Pro that's inside our Nexus. Not that the S4 Pro is bad or anything - quite the contrary, but the 600 is higher up on the food chain. The lag you noticed was most certainly caused by Samsung's bloatware, plain and simple. Wait till the Galaxy S4 Google Edition comes out and everyone on YouTube makes comparison videos of these devices AOSP vs. AOSP - that will give a better indication of who has the stronger hardware. The performance will be close, but Samsung does have the upper hand, even if just by a little bit.
Also... Yuck, Touchwiz! WHY!?

Just the launcher!
BTW I will not go for any Google edition phones as they are unnecessarily given such a high price tag!
Imagine they I but 3 nexus⁴ instead of sgs4 Google edition (2½ in case of HTC one Google edition)
And snapdragonn s4 and 600 are almost same, just 60 is overcloakable till 1.9ghz which is really cool

Those devices are cheaper than retail value in many territories... that primarily pay retail value for phones.
Even the N4 didn't receive the Play prices in most of Asia. It still retails close to $400 even.

Anyone coming from gnex (Samsung galaxy nexus)?

Hi there,
Anyone coming from gnex (Samsung galaxy nexus)?
Just need some feedback on software support, size handling and personal impression.
Thank you
The Note 2 is better at everything, screen, battery, and if you like aosp, there are a lot of those roms for you. The only thing we are missing from a nexus, as far as I can tell, is photoshpere. The devs for this phone are fantastic, so many roms to choose from. The size of the phone should not bother you. Oh yeah, the camera on the Note 2 blows away the Galaxy Nexus. I've had the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4, and the Note 2 when running an aosp rom is just as smooth as the Nexus 4, IMO.

Touchwiz is bearable on the gnote2 because most of the features are actually useful AND work. Great all around phone. Reception, form factor is great for its size, put your own launcher like nova to get the aosp launcher feel, volume is great on ear speaker and loudspeaker and the 720p screen is beautiful even when compared to 1080p. And the SD card slot and removable battery are bonus. Oh yeah, can't forget battery life. Battery just doesn't stop. Expect 6+ hours of screen time easily. Only the most demanding of games will put a hurt on it and even then it still does great. All that and you can get this phone for less than $550 currently and it should still hold nicely for at least another year and I wouldn't be surprised if it holds it down another 2. Don't forget to get a wireless receiver to put inside the battery compartment and a compatible wireless charger.
Sent from my GT-N7100
It's definitely worth upgrading. This phone is better in every respect - sure we only have Android 4.1 officially but unless you really need the multi user feature then you actually gain quite a bit from TouchWiz. The launcher itself blows but the rest is great - things like multi window and driving mode. I don't even run custom roms anymore it's that good - rooted stock is all you need on this bad boy.

My friend has a Gnex, He definitely likes the ability to change screentone but didn't feel huge difference between the two screens, He is quite happy with the gaming performance where he said even games like vector would sometimes have framedrop on the gnex, But he is soooo annoyed that we don't have 4.2 yet, he knows it's not an important update but the feeling that he actually needs to "wait" for the update is really annoying him, that alone is making him consider the Nexus 4

Coming from a Galaxy Nexus I personally couldn't stand Touchwiz for long. However AOSP roms are pretty much stable by now and almost everything is working correctly. That said the Note 2 is one of the best phones I've ever owned so I highly suggest it or waiting for the Note 3

Have no fear my friend. Like I said, I came from a nexus 4 running Paranoid Android. My note 2 running PA ROM is just as smooth and has every feature that the nexus 4 has minus photosphere. The devs that are working with the note 2 will most likely keep working on new ROMs for at least another year or 2, probably longer. You will not be dissatisfied with either the Nexus 4 or a Note 2. My personal opinion would be get the Note 2.

Have come over to Note 2 from galaxy nexus..I really liked the gnex but couldn't stand the horrible camera and battery life.
I would say the better camera and brilliant battery life on the Note2 should be reason enough. Plus there is some great development work for Note 2 . So no fears. Using the Project AOSP v1.4 ROM by modstorm .. And this makes the Note2 almost perfect.
i came over from the gnex too and the battery was terrible. The note 2 is pretty much better in everything. Only thing i preferred on the gnex was the position of the led notification
We may not be on the cutting edge when it comes to Android versions but we do gain several enhancements over stock. Better camera software, driving mode, voice control of apps, and multi window are my favourites. Smart stay and motion gestures seem more gimmicky to me although others my get value from them. Also I prefer having my toggles at the top of the notification window rather than in a separate box.
Oh then there is the micro sd slot, battery life, removable battery, and s-pen.
I don't miss my Nexus 4 one bit.

my impressions after 1-2 weeks with note2 (vs gnex):
better:
- samsung-only (proprietary) features
- battery life
- reading PDFs in landscape possible at last (fonts at least for me in gnex were too small)
- FM radio!!! (last phone from sammy that supports this? such moron assumption that everybody now has/will have limitless data plans)
- much nicer for watching videos
- supernice camera, actually anything better than camera in gnex is supernice
- micro sd
- spen (sam ROM only, yeah i know about apps for aosp...still)
- removable battery (the same actually, just want to stress the fact it is there)
worse:
- samsung-only (proprietary) features, i.e they will never-ever be available for AOSP ROM (BIG ONE for me, means I have to stay on samsung ROM) or suffer tons of features in AOSP simply not there
- btw. camera because of this somehow reported to work a lot better in samsung ROM than AOSP
- touchwiz is a bit painful to use after AOSP, miss the flexibility/configurability of cyanogen...
- shape/size of gnex is ideal for my hand, this one is a bit too much, not a big deal though and apparently getting used to (BUT i will never use armor case, makes it simply far too big)
- unstable WIFI (lots of disconnects) in 4.1.2 by samsung, some fixes available currently testing one to revert 4.1.1 wifi stack (rooted phone needed)
- a bit more gimmicky rooting/custom recovery - not a big deal
- not worse but dont like: handwriting seems to work only with samsung keyboard app? sort of eliminates slide-it,swype etc... need to find some workaround...
- pockets: yeah defo a challenge to fit in shirt's pocket, barely fits in trousers' pockets

thanks, happy to hear...actually I just noticed note2 has also non-AOSP custom ROMs, which after gnex is kind of new category for me. What this seems to mean I will have the chance to get the combined samsung ROM + AOSP-type extra customization, one example seems Hawkish mentioned earlier on this thread -> sounds interesting, I will give it a try in next 1-2 weeks and can report here if you are interested?

[Q] How easy will it be for AOSP rom makers to develop for the new Note 10.1?

Hi guys,
I have completely ditched Samsung after letting me down with the first Galaxy Note.
They did not open source their drivers at the time of ICS. So the devs could not get project butter to run.
So we were stuck with using Samsung roms if you wanted any buttery smoothness.
It has been a long time and I have only used Nexus devices since.
How is Samsung doing now?
Did they come around? Are they open sourcing their drivers?
Is the CM team for example going to be able to fully support the Note 10.1 Exynos processor?
Cheers,
Daan

Is your Note 3 supported by AOSP rom makers?
I didn't find the butter back then. My Huawei Pad had less free ram, in order to buffer more screen contents, methinks, but nothing got smoother.
But I should have considered the situation on the Note about custom roms, before buying one.
Will take a look, for academic reasons, whether Experia Tablet Z owners have custom roms, that was number two on my list, and cheaper.
This is currently the best tablet on the market. Why cripple it with an AOSP ROM? Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I hate touchwiz with a burning passion. I'd much rather it be closer to stock Android. The pen should still work, as it works with the Note 3, so you won't loose any functionality.

Cripple it? No, you will improve the device and any of the functionality that you think you are losing is equaled or improved on with other apps once you are rooted.
My S4 is significantly better after installing Kit Kat vs. Touchwiz. I am undecided on rooting my tab 10.1 2014 due to some security requirements.

That's the thing... you will waste so much time trying to get back the functionality the tablet already has out of the box that it's not worth it. I have CM 11 on my S3 becuase is makes more sense on a phone, but on this tablet with the features it offers you're just wasting the potential of this device. When I pay $600 for something I want everything working and working correctly (excluding some of the S-features) sounds like a Nexus 10 would have been a better fit for you.

I got tired of waiting for the Nexus 10 2. It was my first choice of tablet with the rumored specs. In favor of the Note 2014 - it is on the market now, it was a price I was happy with and it has an SD slot which the Nexus would not. Plus if you want a 10" tablet it is really the only Android option right now. Is it perfect or my ideal tablet? No, clearly not.
Also to your point concerning price. I am with you - the tablet is not worth $600 to me. However I picked up the 32gb version through the Groupon deal. For $420 I think I am satisfied enough to keep it (still making that determination). Or at least I do not regret spending the money.
I am not a big gamer nor am I trying to do any coding on the tablet but to me the Note 2014 comes pretty close to being a laptop replacement. It is not all the way there but I can now travel, attend meetings, etc. without feeling too handicapped if I do not have my laptop with me.
What little I have read on the subject it sounds like rooting this tablet is pretty easy and then just a couple of apps to expand the stock functionality. Hell, I will probably spend more time trying to setup the tablet the way I want through Touchwiz, Nova, or another launcher than if I simply rooted it.

You are right it would be problem solved. Unfortunately I need an "unmolested" tablet for some of the networks/systems I connect to. A rooted tablet will trip security warnings and will be blocked.
Guys, guys, guys! This thread was marked as a [Q]!
It has gone completely off topic.
Those with S4's, S3's and newer Notes, how is your experience with AOSP roms?
Is it easy for open source devs to develop for them?
It doesn't matter who likes what, or why you can't root because of security issues.
The question is: will it be easy to develop non touchwiz Roms.

The answer will be no. The device is very expense and will not get much support in general. Also there seems to very little supoort for the Note 3 with the Exynos Octa. As others have stated I do not see the reason for wanting AOSP on a Note device. You will lose almost all support for the pen and pen specific apps since the cost is so high for the device it seems a waste to not use the pen.

Do the PRO series tablets perform better than the N10.1 2014?

I understand they're running the same hardware but with kitkat, I am generally unsatisfied with the note 10.1 even after running clean rom and nova launcher. I'm using a note 3 and it is insanely fast, I really don't understand why the 10.1 cannot run at the same pace.

I tested both devices.... and both are running really smooth..... I stayed with the note 10.1 .. and its awesome.... I debloated the stock rom... running energy saving mode all the time and have no lags delay whats so ever.....
The new note has abit less battery life than the old one... and the note 12.2 Has about the same as the old note...
Just to be clear youre talking about the note 2014? Since i can confirm that it really runs as fast as the note 12.2.....
Maybe you should revert back to stock rom..... customs roms are not always the way to go..... in my oppinion they are pretty useless if you have a device that has the latest firmware and stuff.... maybe take a look at what task are running at the background ... and disable any unneccary stuff with titanium.... it feels to me youre talking about the old note 10.1 2012..... or maybe you are just running a bad browser app or smth and wonder why your device is slow ... shoutout to firefox app .... maybe u can give more details about whats up
Greetings
Yes note 3 is fast ... note 10.1 Has less specs,.. but you dont really notice much difference in terms of speed... for normal usage.... dont know if youre running some kind of graphical things...

From a N12 owner...
rkirmeier said:
Well I picked up a Note 12.2 (black/32GB) Friday and well have some mixed feelings considering the cost.
1. Need to root for more multiwindow apps
2. Chrome performance is still lacking - Googles fault, not Samsung's but figured raw performance would address it.
3. Really hate the physical home button and cap buttons more then I even thought I would. Why Samsung thinks this is a good idea beats me!
4. Really don't like that everything is scaled up in size for the larger screen. I realize it's the same resolution as my Nexus 10 but a DPI setting would have addressed this. Just makes it feel cheap and like it's for old people or kids. Need to root to change DPI...
5. Seems Samsung took big step backwards on some S Pen apps. The demos I watch for the previous Note devices work much better and more streamlined then on the Note 12.2. Really not sold on the S Pen and think mine is going back for a Tab Pro 12.2 if it's released soon otherwise maybe just a outright return.
6. Seems really stupid they hide the menu button under the multitask button (long press). I know many apps have a menu button but for those that do not this could really throw off a person who is not resourceful. This is the kind of crap that backs up the idea that an iPad is easier to use.
7. Definitely some random lag. Why does Samsung need to over bloat everything. stock Android fits in like 300MB and TW Android is like 8GB!
8. Very limited development activity!
I probably have more to say just not coming to mind yet. If I keep it I simply have to root in order to address the DPI and multi-window apps. It's an expensive device to give up warranty on... Only on day 3, we'll see how the next few go...
