so, for ages ive been sceptical about Play Movies as it doesnt give you any details about the resolution ive never bought anything. however the other day google stuck up a coulpe things for free and i thought yey, get to try something and see what the quality is like.
its crap.
it is on my galaxy nexus anyway. i clicked to download the file and its a little over 320mb for a 90 min show. given one thing id want to use play movies for is downloading on the phone and being able to MHL it up to a TV. so SD is crap i think, but no.
i go over to my nexus 7 and try it there and the same file downloads and its 1.3gb!
so my question is why is this happening and how do i force my GN to use the bigger files, the files that are actually decent quality.

So as we've all figured out by now the Evo runs flash in the main browser (as well as Dolphin, sexy!) but Netflix denies the browser as compatible...
Workarounds?
I know the app is coming "sometime", but this is something I'm willing to end lives to have.
Thanks!
It is probably denying it because it lists it as a mobile browser. You would have to trick it into thinking it is like Firefox.
I know Netflix only allows a set list of browsers, but I'm not sure how to make my broswers report that they're different...I can't even get "about:debug" to come up!
Let me see if there is any type of app available to spoof the browser information. I know there is on the iPhone, but not sure on the Android.

I think netflix is all silverlight now. I could be wrong though
It is silverlight so it won't work. I got it to think I was a desktop browser, but can't run silverlight.

Only if step two involves price gouging for more money.

Thanks! Can you please post the steps to making it work on a phone that isn't out yet, with an app that isn't out yet, on a limited data connection (assuming 2GB is even worth 30 a month, and while I'm traveling so Wi-Fi isn't an option), with enough speed that watching it isn't a terrible experience, with a big enough screen to actually see what I'm watching, and then make a phone call that stays connected for the length of the full conversation?
I'll give you a moment to think it all through, thanks
At the speed Netflix is getting me happy it might be WinPho 7 time...
I hate my self for saying that!

Copy the movie to your hard drive (or leave it in a shared DVD drive)
Install Orb (free) on your PC and configure it to that directory.
Install Orblive (9.99) from the Market.
Watch your movie.
Tip 1: Test the free version of Orblive to make sure it works OK.
Tip 2: If you get too much buffering on your phone, play around with the stream settings in your Orb account.
With ORB you can:
Watch any video (avi/mpeg/DVD)
Listen to your music library.
Monitor home cams.
Watch live cable TV (with a compatible tuner)
I posted this for those that may not have heard of ORB, however, I concede that most of you have.
Hope this helps.

why get orblive for 10 bucks, when you can just navigate to mycast.orb.com and log in with your orb info, and it costs nothing?

For the same reason I used to drink Michelobe instead of Busch, or drive a BMW instead of a Chevy. Some people simply want the best that's available. I bought the EVO not because I needed a new phone, but rather because I wanted it. So what's another 10 bucks to enable it to watch live TV on it? Yes, you can log into your Mycast account, but that method is not nearly as convenient as the app. The purpose of my post was to try and help this person. Some people try to help instead of hinder, which again, is another characteristic of quality.

Or write an ffmpeg script yourself... The interface is terrible in orb anyway. I was able to do transcoding with ffmpeg and it worked well enough over 3g to be awesome. And you can even stream stuff over http which is cool because you don't even need an app on your phone.

lol i agree. i was trying to save him money, you're trying to get him to spend it. bookmark the site, and put the bookmark on your home screen, almost as simple as an app
Any place I can purchase and then download movies to play on my Atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Your best bet would be to take the movie files off your computer and runt hem through a converter. The atrix can play almost every popular format. Unless you're trying to buy/download from the phone to the phone, I don't think there's an app for that.

If you want a service just use netflixx or something of that nature.I don'tuse it personally but I hear it works well on hk 2.34 at least... Then you could watch practically any movie you want!
Try the Handbrake software to convert files if you have them already.

+1 for this. I use handbrake all the time to convert my movies and they play great on the atrix. I usually use the apple tv preset and then it works with my phone and my apple tv.

ive got an alternative way that uses a different piece of freeware and makes batch encoding for the qhd resolution much simpler.

a little bit of playing around to get your initial settings right, but then after that, its just drag and drop.
also might try this
Megaviewer PRO

OP if you really want to GET films on the go and use them, this will work with the phone and the lapdock:

Oh look Battle Of Los Angeles
Checkout the new Android Market apk that Kenn so graciously shared in the Themes and Apps forum! The new Google Android Market lets you rent movies! Works!!

There is a leak apk going around and it should have Books and Movie included but somehow I cant get the movie section on mine install..
I downloaded it from a link on droid-life and I've got movies in the market. I don't think rooted phones can use the movie feature though.
Installed last night on my rooted stock sense droid and the movie section is there although have not nor will I attempt to purchase one. Movies on these tiny screens just doesn't compare to the LED's in the house.
Google movies do not work on rooted phones. I'd suggest using either netflix or online websites to stream movies / tv episodes. I have a good website that has pretty much all the content that netflix doesn't offer (also a bunch of content that they already do). If you want the link PM me
I'm not a fan of the new market design (too many adverts) and it's kinda messy and jumbled. They still didn't fix the problem of finding what I'm actually searching for so I just reverted back to the old one.
Also I'm getting issue with apps not updating or the option to. I click to update app and just uninstall and open..??? I restored back to 2.3.6, also agree on looks of new market. Too much crap and search apps or missing apps sucks compared to older version.
Hi I want to buy this tablet, but I was reading that the expanded memory can only store photos taken from the tablet.
Would I be able to store music and movies on the SD card that I would buy
thanks
You should be able to store anything on the microSD other than apps with a stock android device.
If you are willing to root your device (unlocking all settings that were previiously unavailable), you can store apps on there as well.
Where did you get your information from? It would seem like an odd statement to make unless they were trying to convince you to get something else.
You're getting some bad information. You can store/play music and videos to the SD just fine.
Where they get stored, if you purchase them using the tablet may vary depending on where you are purchasing them. I don't purchase music or videos using the tablet, personally. But the SD works in the same way as most any Android device, for every other purpose.
Thanks for the help
But I saw it on a review of the device (user review) from a store.
I'm sold going to buy one after work
Hi! Just bought this phone because it's just too cheap and has decent specs. Actually, bought 2 of them, they were about 70$ each, with some 15$ extra headphones bonus
Phone came with Fire OS 4.6.3. Managed to install Google services and store, Google now launcher and make default with Home Switcher(listed as "incompatible" in Play store, had to sideload it...many other apps are "incompatible"). That was problem number one...
After that, installed Youtube app, which works, but 360p only and no cardboard option(360 vr videos). Installed iYTBP(modded youtube app) and videos work at higher resolution(720p default) but still no VR. Also default app player doesn't work well.
Installed Facebook and seemed ok, but videos open in browser and don't autoplay in app. I understand whatsupp has problems playing videos...
All these seem to happen because phone is not really known to the apps and they run in "simple" mode.
Is there any way to make apps think it is another phone that they "know" has enough hardware to run them fully? Because it really has...the soc is still strong enough and gyro is there. I will try my best to keep it as stock as possible for warranty reasons(2 years...)
Stumbled across some post where someone said you have to modify build.prop, I think, but can't find it anywhere. Of course, I would need to root it first...
Any more tips welcome, this is best buy for 70$ + bonus and it's really selling well around Romania right now, it seems.
As a side note, battery life seems ok, I got around 5h SOT without sim first day of use, gestures and sensors enabled and Google launcher.
For those other newbs, this site is useful to a point: http://spinyourfire.com/. Home switcher app is attached here, as it does not show up in Google play for this phone.
Google now works fine for me, including wallpapers and widgets and seems to have full functionality.
Thanks!
