**Update (8/19)** THIS MOD SHOULD WORK FOR ALL ROMS! I did it both on AOKP and stock. Gonna look into what else can be edited and post results
If you're having trouble with your phone waking due to the home button, this is the mod for you.
I work in a restaurant and i keep finding that my phone gets quite warm in my pocket because
the screen comes on (it also likes taking screen shots, and sometimes even opens the camera).
Hope this is helpful for you guys.

The mod worked great, but I miss using the home button to unlock. My Otterbox Defender case prevents the pocket push so I un did it lol. Thx for the find!

I don't found it,,
I am using Jelly Bean rom right now and I missed the home button just turns on screen. I think in JB whenever I Push home button it directly goes to home. I mean if you gave a break when reading something when You push home button the app you working on is not active anymore but it goes to home instead. Do you guys have a fix for that?

I'd like to have that too. I had it on my previous phone and liked it.
Edit: Interesting, this is the contents of my whole file, and yet only the home and power buttons do wake up the phone.
key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
key 172 HOME WAKE
key 116 POWER WAKE
Hi, on my galaxy note 2, I don't have the seckeys.kl file. What's up with that?
Its a galaxy note 2, this mod is for the s3
This works great! Thank you for finding this mod.
I'm using on-screen navbar buttons. The home button is the ugly thing Samsung has to put it there.

WAKE: When this key is pressed while the device is asleep, the device will wake up and the key event gets sent to the app.
WAKE_DROPPED: When this key is pressed while the device is asleep, the device will wake up and the key event does not get sent to the app.
Interesting. ..can you give more detail or where to change?

When I first did this I used ES File Explorer to make the edits. It didn't work so I went back to change it back and even though I went back to the default settings the Home button does not turn on the device. So, I downloaded Root Explorer thinking that would help. The strange thing is when I go into the sec_keys.kl file to edit, it is completely blank. So, I added each line manually and then hit save and exit. But, when I go back into it, it is blank again. I assume that all of this has something to do with the home button not turning on the phone. So, what am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

same problem, it fails to turn on the phone.
Once I do this mod it works but now everytime I push the home button, the phone vibrates and makes the touch screen sounds. Anyone know a solution so this one home button does not vibrate or make a sound when pressed besides turning off vibrations and sounds for the whole phone?

Is there a way (patch or app) to stop or disable home button from waking up screen? When it is in my pants pocket the button gets pressed and screen stays on. Just the power button for screen wakeup is enough for me.
Rooted running JB ROM.
Thanks!
In Root Explorer
/System/Usr/Keylayout
scroll down to: sec_keys.kl
find line: key 172 HOME WAKE
after home remove "wake"
Thanks!
I don't use any lock screen and I always use the home button to wake my phone up.
Since official JB, the home button not only wakes the phone up but it closes the app I'm in. Example : I'm browsing something on chrome, the screen turns off bc of timeout, I wake the phone using the home button and I see chrome back but immediatly it closes down like if I had pressed the home button again (but I didn't). The same behavior does not happen when a lock screen is enabled.
I tried searching for an answer and tried the solution of editing the .kl files in system/usr/keylayout by adding WAKE_DROPPED or replacing WAKE with WAKE_DROPPED for every occurence of the home key (key 172) without luck. I tried fixing the permissions in CWM and I made sure the permissions are rw-r-r.
Running stock rooted with CWM.
Any other ideas? Thx!
I'm also curious about this. My temporary fix was to unfreeze S Voice in Titanium and then enable the double press of the home button to start S Voice.
I'd rather keep S Voice frozen and still keep the same behaviour of the home button in ICS.

Yes that does work indeed. However, it brings back the lag when pressing the home button. I'm also using home2 shortcut for some shortcuts and it completely breaks them!
The same problem arises also when you long press the home button to get to recent apps, if you have an app open in the background at that moment and you press the home button to get out of the recent app screen, it closes the app!
I'm using widgetlocker as a replacement lockscreen and it works great with power button. But when I wake the phone with the home button it goes to whatever default settings there are for lockscreen be it swipe, pin, pattern etc. Anyway to remap home or disable it waking the phone all together? Two different lock screens is really annoying. Thanks.

You can a least get rid of the double lock screen issue by going into lock screen setting and choosing "none"..what will happen from there when you press home is beyond me since I don't have that app..

Yeah I did this to start but then it bugged me that when I hit home it just came on unlocked. Turns out Google is useful after all cuz I found a way to disable the home button so that it at least doesn't wake the phone. Getting the app to recognize the home button as a wake though is the fault of the app at this point so I guess consider my question answered. Thanks all.

you CAN disable the home button from waking the phone if you are rooted:
back up
navigate to /system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl
erase the "WAKE" in key 172
BEFORE:
Code:
key 172 HOME WAKE
AFTER:
Code:
key 172 HOME
save
restart
enjoy!

Yes this is what I did. Thanks! Saw this in a Google search. It's half my battle anyhow. Would've still liked to invoke a 3rd party lockscreen with home. But at least now my only option to turn on phone and get correct lockscreen is thru power button.

I have this cover (Cover from Amazon.de )
I finally managed to prevent the home key from wakening the phone. Carrying the phone in a case in my pocket always woke up the phone when I pressed against the cover.
Reason for this: The home button of the GN2 is slightly higher than the screen. On many other Galaxys the home button is a bit lower than the screen, so a cover would never be able to wake up the phone.
I disabled the lock screen and installed the perfect free app intellicover from Google Play. So opening my case immediately turns on the screen and when closing the case the phone screen turns off. That´s a great free app!
This is what worked (on my rooted Note II Build XXDLL4):
1. Open root explorer
2. Go to /system
3. Go to /usr
4. Go to /keylayout
5. Copy gpio-keys.kl to your computer
6. Open notepad in windows and open the file
the original file is :
key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
key 116 POWER WAKE
key 172 HOME WAKE
change the file to:
key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
key 116 POWER WAKE
key 172 HOME
So the only thing is, you´ll have to remove the word WAKE in the last line.
7. Save the file onto your computer.
8. Copy the new file back to your phone
9. Open root explorer again, search for the file, it will be named as
gpio-keys.kl.txt
9. Rename the file with root explorer to
gpio-keys.kl
10. Save the file
11. Move it back to /system/usr/keylayout (mount R/W) overwriting the existing file.
11. Close root explorer
12. Finally restart your phone.
I did not manage to change the file directly in root explorer by long pressing the Option "open in Text Editor" . So copying the file to my computer did the trick.
Now my home button does not wake the phone anymore. But using the above mentioned Intellicover-app does the same thing, I just have to swipe over the proximitysensor to wake the phone, when the cover is open. Or I can wake the phone by using the on/off-button.
I hope this can help you, when you have a front cover.
You can also disable the home button to wake by installing the app widget locker lockscreen

Thanks tons for finding that sweet spot.
I did the whole thing using ES File Explorer, opened as text, edited on SD just to be safe.
Thanks!!!!
