So I might be purchasing a new phone through Craigslist, the guy doesn't have a receipt but claims to work for T-Mobile, and has the phone bought out right paid in full... If I just go to a T-Mobile and have them check the IMEI and the dudes plan, they can pull a receipt for him and me showing that it is paid up correct? Also, how can I go about preventing him from calling it in stolen or lost, and then me having a IMEI corrupted phone? Any word of advice fellas?
He will have to be present to give them permission to access his account. Then he will have to ask for the specific info and let you view it with him.
Then ask a store employee, not him, to remove the s3 from his account and make note of it in yours.
Make sure you view either an e-receipt, or his last two phone bills. Check if he's paying on an eip.
This is just what common sense would tell me to do. Not sure if there's an actual transfer of ownership they can do or what. But I would have to be highly satisfied with the info before handing over my cash!
Its a little extreme, but you could have a bill of sale written up, kinda like when you buy a car from an individual.
Just be comfortable with the situation and seller. It doesn't matter what steps you take, if he does something to get it blacklisted, you'll have no recourse w tmobile I don't think.

Almost exactly what I asked from him and the second I did ask, he backed out and said its too complicated and furthermore removed the post from CL... I didn't think about the last two bills but will if I decide to try again on another seller. Doubt I will though. Will just wait to see if someone buys my s3 or til next paycheck. Thanks Doc.

People are super sketch though,I had a conversation yesterday with the person not wanting to meet up at a T-Mobile and wanting my address to come buy my phone lol, they refused the idea of meeting public haha. Ya I resorted to just wanting to buy it at a store instead now. Still wanna sell the s3 though.

I might be the luckiest person ever. I found a T-Mobile Galaxy S3.
Anyways, can I get in trouble for using the phone? Can T-Mobile somehow track the phone and disable it.
Thanks for your answers.
P.S. The phone has no contact store, so I can't really return it to the owner. The only dialed number is a company.
Go to t mobile store and return it. They will use IMEI to find the owner. If the owner report it stolen tmobile will black list the phone and you may not be able to use it anyway.

I am really surprised at all of the responses from people suggesting yuo should keep the phone or better yet, sell it to them! That is really the worst advice anyone can offer, what the hell are you guys thinking? It's dishonest and kind of sh..tty to suggest that they should keep the phone and hope the owner had insurance... if that's how you live your life, I am hope I don't live nearby you - - Karma my friends - the best thing to do would be to return the phone to any T MOBILE Store - what would you want them to do if it was your phone?
the poor soul who lost his/her galaxy s3 is probably pulling there hair and gouging there eyes out by now... so sad...
If I had found this phone, I would do everything in my power to get it back to its owner. When the owner finally gets reunited with the phone I doubt they would leave you walking empty handed however even if they do at least you know you have done a very amazing deed.
Who knows someday you may lose something and some generous soul will return your lost item to you.
Oh my feelings are hurt by all these strangers judging me online. Why don't you people believe me hehe
I think, I will just keep the phone on for a couple days and hopefully the owner will call
What the hell man, leave the phone in a T-Mobile store.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
so if the phone still has a sim card and it works, just return the phone to tmobile and they will track the number and they could see who it belongs to!
do something great, people will do the same to you.
I agree with everyones (some) responses. I found a iPhone 4S with a pink case. I was able to get ahold of the owner (beautiful girl) and she cried and gave me so many thank yous. She offered $50 but i declined it. If i ever lose my baby (gs3) ...I would hope someone would do the same. Return the phone man..
My insurance was canceled....if I were to lose my phone I'd have to pay full price for a new one. I couldn't afford another Siii.
Return it to Tmo as has been suggested. To do anything less is theft.
If it was my phone, I would activate the mobile security app on the phone and track you down and then the police would arrest you for stealing my phone. But that's just me. By the way, mobile security comes free on most t mobile phones with the correct insurance. I wouldn't risk being labeled as a thief, even if you did somehow "find" it.

Since you told her they are going for 300(which is really cheap to start with for a s3) and she offered you 220 for it, seems too good to be true.
But if everything checks out OK with the imei then yes you scored big time.
But make sure you get pictures over the device. I've ran into so many scams on Craigslist that it wouldn't surprise me if they migrated to Facebook.
My advice, proceed with caution

If T-mobile did not tell me to send the phone back than I would NOT send it back.... It sounds to me like they already know he has the extra phone but don't care, so sell it to someone for parts or whatever they want to do with it..... If you want to keep it then you have no options with T-mobile but you can get it activated on Straight Talk or Simple Mobile cause they don't tend to care or even know if it's disabled by T-mobile... I am NOT promoting fraud but if you are being honest I am giving you an honest answer...

I actually think the person he sells the phone to will find out its blacklisted, regardless of what carrier its on. At that point the new owner will do one of two things; call the police, or show back up with friends and ensure they get their money back. You have one working note, and an extra one that should be sent back because thats the honest thing to do. Why do you think otherwise. Go troll some of the lesser sites, I dont believe xda is the proper place for you to try and learn how to reprogram an IMEI in order to circumvent t-mobile block on your phone, as its concidered stolen at this point.

If your story is true, I wouldn't send it back... t-mobiles mistake, not yours... if you want to throw it to a dev for dev use shoot me a pm (not for me, but a dev on gsIII that wants one to dev on)
On Nov 6th I met up with someone at Starbucks from Craigslist to purchase the Galaxy Note 2 for $450 with box charger and instructions. I checked the esn number and it was clean. I inserted my sim card and was able to use the phone. On Friday Dec 28th, my phone all of sudden couldn't go on the web using 4g and I couldn't make and receive incoming calls. I called T-Mobile using a landline and they said my imei has been blocked. I went to the T-Mobile store and paid $50+ tax to use a loaner phone because I can't be without a phone. Today T-Mobile told me that this phone can't be activated due to equipment installment program. What should I do? Should I sell this phone on eBay and specify that this imei is blacklisted? Maybe someone from around the world could use this phone unlocked. Right now the phone is LOCKED. Should unlocking be my expense or should it be the buyers expense to unlock this phone? Should I use the money I get from selling this device to buy a brand new galaxy note 2?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
Track down the creep who sold it to you and get your money back. Call him and let him know you have contacted the police and they are reviewing the tape from Starbucks and you fully expect to get your money back. Have him meet you at the police station for the refund.
Hey, may not work but worth a try. I'd rattle the hell out of him and would not leave him alone. He knew what he was up to and essentially stole your money. That's not ok.
Outside of saber rattling, it's now your problem. If you like the device enough, just pay whatever T-Mo needs to get it turned back on. You got a good price so whatever they need should still be cheaper than buying a new one.
Edit: well, who knows what T-Mobile needs paid. It may be worth it to just sell as blacklisted and call it a day.
The person who sold me the phone is the only one could make payments toward the phone. Its a lady that sold me the phone.

This is the second time I am hearing of this. I blame tmobile. If you call them to ask if the phone is clean to purchase and they tell you yes then it's their fault for not making sure it doesn't have any outstanding balance. To the Op you have yet to explain why you haven't contacted the seller. The other poster didn't try to contact the seller either. So either you are both idiots or maybe you are trying to figure out how to unlock a stolen phone. And please don't say you can't find the owner because tmobile had there information and with a push from the police they have to give it up.

So instead of dealing with the person that sold you the phone you are going to unlock it? Once again I am calling BS on this and now you have people helping you unlock a phone that is not legally yours.
....... But unlocking won't unblock the IMEI o.0 Unless you're planning to use it on another carrier than Tmo, unlocking won't allow you to use the phone.

I have to agree with this. Tmo wouldn't just tell you the phone was clear & then turn around & say "Oops, we meant to say it's blocked!" If they actually made a mistake when the OP first called in, he needs to escalate until they either unblock him or credit him for a comparable new phone. This whole story just smells funny. I know that if I had just dropped hundreds of dollars on a phone that I couldn't even use thanks to the seller's negligence/fraudulence, I'd be sitting in the police station filing a report within minutes of finding out it was blocked. I can't even imagine just saying "oh well, guess I got scammed!" about something like this. The OP is either incredibly rich & $450 is just pocket change, or else something is fishy here.

I agree with those who say you should hold the lady responsible. Contact her and see if she will make it good. If not, small claims courts is the way to go. I've done two small claims cases. Its easy and not expensive. Sounds like you have a solid case. Of course once you get a judgement you may have a problem collecting if she's a deadbeat. But if she's got an income you can force her to pay up. My 2 cents. Good luck.
Could this phone be activated on Straight Talk? Might be able to get most of your money back via CL if someone wants to use it on prepaid.

My friend is on contract on T-Mobile he got the note 2 a month ago and he told ordered two replacement refurbished note 2's then he's done with T-Mobile he ain't sending it back or nothing just done paying it and keeping the phones. I told him he can get into trouble for that he can right?? Or does it just mess up his credit? He did it three years ago and nothing happened besides probably bad credit now.
I know a lot of people on Craigslist be getting new phones without battery and back piece and I once bought one and it wouldn't read my Sim card because he never paid it I'm guessing.
The phone will black listed, side note I exchange phones a bunch due to defects or little things Tmobile is becoming much more strict about what they will exchange abs are now charging $5-$20 to process exchanges I wouldn't be surprised if a bill is coming his way soon

But what else will happen since he done paying and not sending the phones back?

They may bill for a full cost of a replacement phone. I used to work for a t-mobile dealer LONG time ago (9 years ago) and they did the same thing. If we had a customer walk in, we process an exchange on their behalf. But we tell them if they don't send original phone back, they will be getting a large bill. And few people did. T-Mobile does work with them, and will take the charges out if you return the phone.
The phones will be blacklisted. If he sells them the new owner is screwed. Maybe he is Ok with that. If he is, find another friend as this guy proved himself to be a slime ball.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

You ever see "bad esn" in an ebay auction description for a cell phone...that is what your buddy's phones will have. They can pretty much can be used as a wifi mini tablet, unless he is able to flash the phone to another gsm carrier. Regardless goes against his credit also.
Not true T-Mobile uses sim cards you can do what ever except. For warranty. I know a bit about this subject but the problem with things like this is once people start talking in a public forum than can screw everybody.

Again, not true. The phone WILL be blacklisted and won't work in the country unless you take it overseas maybe. How do I know? I deal with craigslist people and ebay listings for a meager living.
Phones will be blacklisted with Tmobile, Simple mobile and AT&T he will also be billed $600 for not returning the defective phone. The phones they send him will be factory refurbished which means it's just the phone there will be no battery, battery cover, Spen or charger.

What happens if he doesn't pay that?

What are you trying to figure out here?
If T-Mobile will send the police knocking if you don't pay?
Its probably the same as all of the pathetic dead beat people who think its OK to steal and don't think they should have to pay bills like the rest of us.
He'll have bad credit (which won't matter to him because he's apparently OK with stealing things anyway) and he'll get away with it for the most part while the rest of us law abiding citizens will continue to pay more for goods and services and more to cover for selfish people like this!!

He's clearly talking about himself lol I love it when they get on here and do this. It's like the typical "dad I need your advice..... I have a friend who's......" when all along he's talking about himself. Smh stop stealing and taking advantage of warranties.

Says the guy who's associated with a thief! Right, so scums like him can benefit a small portion whole the rest of us decent people pay for it! Then you'll be back here complaining about how much the deductible is for a flagship phone.

What you're talking about is theft and fraud. You're not going to get any help on criminal activity from anyone here. Nobody is going to give you advice on how to avoid going to jail. In fact, simply talking about it could implicate you for aiding and abeting and now there is proof all over the internet. Good luck.
