Galaxy S4 and the Google Edition dilemma - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am and have been a Nexus fanboy for quite a while now. I purchased my S4 thru T-Mobile after I read I would be able to transform it into a Google Edition. I owned a Galaxy Nexus and even though the Nexus 4 was released, I didn't feel it was a worthy upgrade to my current phone. So I went ahead and got the S4. I was tired of waiting on the Nexus 5.
First, it is HARD to find a real port to the real vanilla experience because as soon as you start reading the description, you realize it is not what it is labeled to be. Most of them are deodexed, prerooted, busyboxed, and the kernel has been tweaked.
I find myself going back and forth between these Google Edition ROMs and the official stock software every time someone cooks a new ROM and names it Google Edition. This is driving me nuts. I wish I had purchased the Nexus 4 and never purchased the S4.
Am I the only user who fell in this trap?

Shouldnt you be able to flash the Google Edition Firmware? Like Samsung's Odin Style way? Id be all over the Google Edition if it had WiFi Calling because its a must have for me.

Bootloader is locked and the partitions cannot be changed. So you can make it a "Google Edition", but it will never be a true change.

+1 on this. Would definitely love a pure Google untouched ROM. Obviously except whatever partitions/kernel that needs to be edited etc. In able to make it work.

All I want is a real Odin flashable .tar file that repartitions the device and also flashes the bootloader.

Oh yeah, and be able to get OTA updates.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Xparent Skyblue Tapatalk 2

Sounds like you should of gotten the HTC One. Which this can be done. ROM is as close as we are going to get. Sadly we just don't have enough devs on the S4 atm.

I got the nexus 4 in december. I also have an tmo s4. I agree with the previous guy about development. There is a lot to choose from on nexus 4 devlopments threads. However, when i found the way to flash stock android on my s4 i did. I dont miss nexus 4 at all. I gave the nexus 4 to my wife since then. As long as google update the s4 i will be able to do it as well and i really dont care if i have to flash it manually.
For me this is a blessing!
Nexus 4 is an excellent device. In my opinion camera sucks. Now is like still using the nexus with a better hardware. Screen color are better, images and videos looks amazing here. Sound quality is better and camera.....you must know s4 has a better camera.
If theres no way to go back and change your phone, then be happy. When you have both phones side by side you surely will pick s4.
Sorry for my english. This is just my experience. Maybe someone can desagree and i respect that.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium

So what's different? Is it because of the Samsung frameworks on the Google edition roms? I don't see what you're missing out on from the vanilla Android experience.

curious, why didnt you order the google edition then?
and this wont happen for a while, if at all, for why see here

I replaced my HTC sensation with the nexus 4 when it launched, then got the s4 in may. I didn't realize how much I grew to love stock android experience in that 6 months. I just installed a custom rom based on the GPe s4 and i feel much more at home now. I'll prob sell the s4 and get the nexus 5 when it releases.

Just sell your S4 and buy the Nexus... You can even make some money back on that deal...

There is currently no way to turn your M919 into a pure 9505G, but there are quite a few ROMs (odexed, unmodded, etc) in the 9505 section.
I've tried some of them and they are quite stable and complete (e.g. janjan's)
I am currently using Cool-Boy's GE4.3 lite ROM (albeit deodexed with home button lag fix, battery percentage, 3-way reboot) and the ROM is absolutely great. Battery life is MUCH better than on the stock TW and the phone is just super snappy.

I am not sure why exactly you want a 100% unaltered GE ROM (remember, it will still NOT fully turn your phone into 9505G. no functional OTA updates), because some of the alterations (e.g. faux kernel) are simply necessary for the ROM to function properly (exSD, exFat support, etc) on your phone AFAIU.
But here you go nevertheless:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2395030
P.S. For even more untouched ROM (non user compiled), we'll probably have to wait for Samsung to post a system/dump/source for 4.3. Evan then, some alterations will be necessary to make the firmware compatible with non 9505G devices.

Official is when the team as a whole decide to post an new rom update, not just "nightlys" with stuff that isn't merged yet.
Also some people say that its not official if its not posted by a team member, which I'm am not

I'd guess that any pure AOSP based ROM would need to somehow support the Samsung S-pen capabilities and be made to co-exist with the Samsung system S-pen capabilities software "blob", or do away with the S-pen capabilities altogether?
AOSP is open source ... enhancements to it may or may not be. If it helps Samsung in their patent fight with Apple to prove how they've added their own differentiated technology to smart phones, should they make it open source and let Apple have it as well?

...Not as minor as 4.2 -> 4.3. UI drastically changed (not just the launcher) and they decided to make a universally available Launcher called Google Experience, so you see Google is determined to make KitKat a large step forward.
But yeah, based on this point (universal, unified experience) and Google's saying of "making the best experience for everyone", I can say that we're going to get KitKat in one way or another (I don't personally care if Google decides no official release, AOSP is always there). Plus, who said we need 3.4 or even 3.8 kernels to run it (any RELIABLE sources)? Many older devices run JB 4.1 and even 4.2 nicely with 2.6.xx kernels. Many 3.4, 3.8 and even 3.1x features are being backported too.

Look i don't know about Linux Kernel, etc..
But i just saw that the 3.8 is officially discontinued.
3.4 is continued until October 2014.
So i think the next Kernel version for Android will be the 3.10 (long term: until September 2015) not 3.8.
By the way....a Nexus 5 with 3.10 kernel would be pretty nice. But it seem it will be 3.4.
Source
I remember when 3.0 was released (after the 2.6.39), Linus Torvalds said exactly this:
"So what are the big changes? NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. Sure, we have the usual two thirds driver
changes, and a lot of random fixes, but the point is that 3.0 is
*just* about renumbering, we are very much *not* doing a KDE-4 or a
Gnome-3 here. No breakage, no special scary new features, nothing at
all like that. We've been doing time-based releases for many years
now, this is in no way about features. If you want an excuse for the
renumbering, you really should look at the time-based one ("20 years")
instead."
I post that, only to say that sometimes numbers mean nothing..3.4 is a stable kernel, there isn't a big difference that you can see in the daily use with 3.10..really
Lets pray, for kitkat on our phone..!!!

No man not yet. They do have plans to.
It's true that the answer is a simple no. But I had to learn the hard way when I first jumped into this site a few years ago that people do not like to be asked questions that are easy to answer. You don't even have to look on this website. Simply look at the spec sheet on LG's website and you will see that it comes with 4.2 .2. There is already a rootkit out for the device but no roms at this time. I honestly don't think you need a newer version at this time. 4.2 .2 jelly bean does everything you need in my opinion. Otherwise get a Nexus device. I have a Nexus 4 running Kit Kat Paranoid Android and Franco kernel and I couldn't be happier. But when it comes to my tablet I just wanted for basic consumption and a stock Android is perfectly fine. Just my opinion.

Sorry if this an obvious question, but I'd really like to know if I'd have to root/unlock it to flash some more recent Android version.
Speaking of which, how difficult is it to flash/unroot?

What is it that you are going to gain from updating to 4.3? The bigger number? There is a lot more that can be improved in the ROM than going to 4.3

would like Android 4.3 or later to enable opengl es 3.0 support for games. Hopefully lg comes out with an update soon.
i would like to see cyanogen mod 11 or pac rom much more than official updates of LG
