Transparent navigation buttons. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone else digging the transparent navigation buttons on the Moto X? They look cool and they would reduce "burn in". I seem to remember a transparent status bar option back in the gingerbread days. Would this be possible on the gnex?

How can there be a screen burn when this is an AMOLED display and the display doesn't light up black pixels?

Let me try explaining better, terrible description on my part. All of the screen that isn't part of the status bar at the top and the buttons at the bottom display a yellowish tint to it when viewing any light material on the screen. Not really noticeable when looking at pictures or material where the status bar and buttons are still on screen. But if you do something like view a video where those disappear, those areas are much whiter then the rest of the screen is.

I know what you're saying. This happens on my display too when it's full screen and I'm playing games or watching a video. Not much you can do when the display has been stressing pixels on the main display and hardly using any pixels on the navigation bar and status bar.

It not traditional burn in, that's why I put it in quotations. Amoled pixels get worn and dim over time, so the pixels that are never lit end I p brighter and often miscolored compared to the rest of the screen.

You can't do much. Use transparency settings and change wallpaper more often and you can extend display life a bit. It sucks I know.

Try this

[Q] Screen blackness

The Nexus S had a completely black screen - at night black was no different that if it was switched off. My GN appears to have slight screen glow in the backs. However, I thought they were both SAMOLED screens? Presume I am wrong? Can anyone explain?
/R
I noticed the same thing. I just assumed that not all sAMOLED screens are equal, and that the change in resolution could have been a cause. Maybe Samsung wasn't able to perfect it. Just speculation
It is pretty close though.

I was expecting this too and was a little dissapointed, was looking forward to having my night clock on and the only light coming from the screen to be the clock text but the whole screen has a slight glow to it
Same here, I wonder why is it like that. No bragging of true black anymore. Feels like step backwards.

The screen does do true black.
It's just the wallpaper isn't turned to black, it's made very dim.
The "slight glow" is the dim wallpaper if you look carefully.
Hmm, I made own 1x1 black picture for background. Still it isn't true black.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
The same here, not nearly as black as my old Galaxy S
The blacks look black as black to me.
Mine seems pretty black. I've only had a Vibrant with SAMOLED before, and I think this is equivalent if not better. Sadly, I've got a small weird green dent on the pixels on the second quadrant though...
I've noticed this too. Definately not as dark as my Galaxy S2 was.
My blacks look as good as my GS2's did to my eye. When you guys open up the app drawer, it's not totally black behind the icons? I can't make out bezel or screen with blacks.
I've also noticed that the blacks aren't as black as on my Galaxy S. The blackness on the GS was even more noticeable since every colour displayed is eye-burstingly vivid. I do miss the true black but at least the general display is nicer on the GN than the GS.

I just used the night display mode on Gentle Alarm.
I put the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S2 side-by-side.
The Nexus definitely has a noticeable backlight compared to the S2.

My screen is as dark as midnight and is peferectly fine with me.
Can people please who say screen is completely black test the clock app in night mode in a perfectly dark place. I have a feeling this is not only in some of the phones but in all. Will contact support to verify this.
I think the black tint on the glass isn't as dark as it was on the nexus s. At least that's how it looks on my gnex.
When the screen is on for an AMOLED display, it's not "true black". If I remember correctly, there's a minimum voltage applied when the screen is on. Otherwise it would draw more power to switch the pixels from fully off to on. In other words, the GN might have some slightly different minimum voltage.

As mentioned earlier, the clock app doesn't use a pure black background. Rather, it uses an dark overlay over your wallpaper.
Also, the default background for apps has been changed to one that isn't pure black

Black line on screen

Hello,
When i have a wallpaper whit black on top of the screen, then i have a small black line on top were normally the status bar ends, so thats a half centimeter from the top screen.
Its really difficult to see and its only when i have a really black background,
When there are other collors then the black line is gone so its only with really black.
Maybe that its normall

Further than that the screen is really perfect

I don't have one yet but it doesn't sound like a faulty screen. A faulty display may have pixels or a row that is all black regardless of what's on the screen or always white etc.
You can try downloading a screen checking app, it will display all black, white, red, green and blue to try and identify faulty pixels.

If that is the case something may be wrong. While it isn't a typical problem it should not be occurring. Consider getting a replacement.
Hello,
Do you think its faulty?
Is it not normal like the black spots on the note 1?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
If you see a black line that goes across the whole screen and it is only visible on a black screen that is defective in my opinion. It should be consistent.
No its not from top screen to home button.
The small black line is on top were the status bar ends so its a horizontal line when you hold the phone like when your calling.
Yes its only when there is full really black picture or movie
My note 1 from last year had alot of black spots over the whole screen and that was only when there was black screen
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I don't really have any experience with AMOLED screens but it still does not seem normal to me(I could be wrong). It really comes down to if it bothers you and how noticeable it is. It probably isn't too bad since its only for black.
Why don't you take a screenshot from your phone (Press the S-pen button, then tap on the screen) and then transfer the image to your computer.
Compare both images and if the black line doesn't appear on your computer, it means that your screen is faulty.
I can do that.
Is there nobody with a note 2 that can test it maybe whit the screen test app, and then go to the full black screen and look good for a black line, but with normall light its not noticable you must be in a darker room

I had exactly the same issue with S2, sent back for replacement. It was very noticable with black backgrounds and also whilst using camera in dark situations, other than that is was very difficult to see.

Did your new s2 have it to?
My note 1 had black spots, almost every note 1 had them so far as i know.

Hello
I`ve just noticed that my galaxy nexus has some wierd "ghost yellow menus" when everithing is white.

What can I do to get ridd of them?
Looks like screen burn-in, which is unavoidable with an AMOLED display. My GNex has similar banding from the notification bar, soft-key bar, and the address bar in Chrome (which is why I've stopped using Chrome and reverted to stock Browser.)
I don't know if there's a way to fix it, but the fact is that if you have a static image displayed on the screen, it will retain itself, much like a plasma TV.
Man I hate the blue burn in the notification bar and the nav bar

Rotate the screen every now and then. If yoru phone is still under warranty, you can ask Samsung to replace it for you. Hopefully the new batch or SAMOLED are less prone to burn in.

Yeah. The pixels of these displays wear out slowly but surely with use (and subpixels of a certain color - green, I believe, although I'm not 100% sure right now - wear out faster than the others), but since the notification and navigation bars are mostly completely black (meaning those pixels are turned off and barely get used at all) those areas don't get worn out like the rest of the display does. So it's not that the bars are "burned" into the screen, it's rather that those areas are in better condition than the rest of the display.

I was thinking that too but did you guys notice that when the screen is displaying back it is not absolutely black? The pixels do glow a little bit for faster screen switching (it was mentioned in some other posts). I think it could also be this static glow that causes the burn in.
What's this about a new batch? Did Samsung start using new displays with the GalNex recently?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Sorry, I meant like a production batch. Don't thing they will use new displays with the Gnex.
I have insurance thru VZW which gives me a 2 year warrantly. I already had VZW replace 2 Gnex's, because of screen burn in, and if I get burn in again, I'll have them replace it again. They really don't give you a problem with replacing the phone, just tell them you did all like troubleshooting methods like factory data reset etc. and the burn in remains. They will send you a "like new" refurbished replacement. All the replacements I have got have been in great condition. If you are under warranty do not tolerate screen burn in, get it replaced immediately.
I've seen 5 gnex and each one of them had different screen. I mean every one looked different, worse or better. It looks like producing a good quality amoled display is very difficult or Samsung has very low QA for them... I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Just use it... It's not that you often display static full screen gray background.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Top Half Screen darker

Hi,
I have an issue with the screen of my Gnex.
I tried to post the question in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394358 but i received still no answer.
My Gnex had a yellowish tint on entire display, but i have resolved the problem setting up colors with trickster mod.
The issue is that the top half of the display is a bit darker than the bottom half, it looks to be a little yellowish than half bottom.
It can be seen on a completely white background.
I noticed also that looking at the display at about 45° from bottom to top the color seems to become uniform.
Can be this problem due to the fact that the touch screen is curved from the half to bottom and not from the half to top?
The display itself is just flat and this may create a sort of refraction thru the touch glass.
I was not able to see a brand new Gnex till now because i buyed mine by second hand.
What about your gnex device?
I would like to know if it's a real defect or not because I have to decide buying a brand new replacement display.
Thanks you in advance for your answer.

Galaxy Nexus has content adaptive brightness turned on by default for the screen and the messaging app is white, apps like facebook are a light color as well. So when you pull up the keyboard, the total white color is reduced and the one that is left is turned up to a higher brightness. Which causes faster degradation of blue oleds on the top half. Turn off content adaptive brightness in trickster mod to prevent this from happening further.

Thanks for the answer, i had already disabled the content adaptive brightness, but the strange thing is that the top area where there is the notification bar is more yellowish than the area where there's the navigation bar when I hide them. Both bars generally are black for the same time but the pixel degradation seems to be different. This made me thinking that the color shade is due to a sort of refractive effect due to the curved glass. As I wrote previously, looking from bottom to top at about 45 degrees the solid white looks to turn uniform.
I also changed the color of the keyboard to white to avoid to use different colors on both top half and bottom half.
Also disabled the crt animation because this burns a stripe in the middle of the screen. My brightness is always set at 20 percent.
Thanks very much for your suggestion anyway

[Q] Fix major AMOLED screen burn in?

Hi everyone, on my Galaxy Nexus I have MAJOR screen burn-in from the navigation bar. (black bar at bottom, back/home/apps) Whenever I turn the phone sideways (i.e. in a full-screen video or game), the navigation bar moves to the side as usual, and gets narrower...when it does this, I see a purple (why purple?) line that "fills up" where the navigation bar would be on portrait. Of course when it is portrait, this cannot be seen, as the navigation bar covers it. In ClockworkMod Recovery, at the bottom of the screen, I can see a strong burn-in of the navigation bar. It is incredibly annoying, and I heard that by displaying white on the entire screen for a long time (full brightness) this can be weakened or fixed. I have seen apps for this, but have no clue how long I should run them for. Is it REALLY possible to fix something MAJOR, or is it a "maybe..sometimes" or just a hoax?
you can try to take a snapshot of your screen and invert the colors of the image in a program (like photoshop online, idk). then you put that inverted image on your phone and view it full sreen.
I don't really know if this helps, but I read it somewhere when I had some sreen problems with my GNex (I sent it to warranty)

I'm not really sure how that would do anything. The rest of the screen is fine, there's only a problem at the navigation bar. Leaving an image like that might just burn in other colors. If it really was SAMOLED, then it should not have a burn in there at all...because it turns off "black" pixels. It's confusing and annoying.
Or try a Kitkat ROM with Google Experience Launcher which doesn't have the black nav bar and status bar...

maybe rest of the screen actually burned, so only not burned part is navbar and seems weird.
there is a tool: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.codefortravel.amoled_screen_burn_in it has an option, that makes all your screen black and your nav bar white, using it for a while makes your navbar also burned, so it would eventually catch other parts and be the same level in theory..

No, I got it off of eBay as a 'replacement' phone. This is my first smartphone (but not Android device) but I am still in a 2 year contract with Verizon and can't get an upgrade yet. It's not really a problem, just an inconvenience.
This was one of the reasons I always try too run in extended desktop mode(no on screen buttons/status bar) and use PIE controls instead.
Also helps running the stock browser in full screen mode.
Even after less than a few months of first owning my GN I've gotten a tiny little burn in on the bottom bar, but luckily it's not easily noticeable.
I have also got a burn-in. It's not too major, but it's there. Please do update us if you find any solution which actually fixes this thing.
I'm going to do some tests with different things.
I heard leaving a white image on full brightness for a long time will help, so I'm going to try that. Another thing I might try is color alternations for long periods of time to just get different colors all over the screen. Probably won't do much, but it's worth a try. I thought I'd also see what it's like using the phone locked upside down. (rotate upside down, lock rotation) This is the app I'm using if anyone else wants to experiment with it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.feetstech.screenburn
Wish me luck, I'll post what happens!
Update 1: I have noticed that on higher brightness levels, the burn is less noticeable. I left a white screen on full brightness for what was probably just over 2 hours, and it hasn't really seemed to help much. I'm going to try color flashing and see what happens.

Are you sure the burn-in is persistent? Usually it goes away after a while.
Almost forgot I started this thread! I don't really know if the burn in apps helped any, but I've noticed that the lower the brightness is, the more imminent the screen burn is. Around 1% if you touch one of the navigation buttons it turns.......purple. Once you get above around 20%, it's more grey and natural....(not purple)
._.
amoled + low brightness = nearly unusable.

Depends on your environment. In a dark room it's fine all the way down. If you're outside in the sun, even 50% seems a little dark.
