unbrick advice, have some copies of mtd, and recovery still works - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi,
I managed to corrupt my boot parition, I can still access recovery and install update.zips (I have no original files).
Any advice on what I could do using recovery ?
What went wrong:
I did a dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd0 of=boot.img , and forgot bs=4096 (or is it actually needed in this case).
I then extracted the ramdisk from boot.img (unpackbootimg), modified it and repacked everything using mkbootimg, after this I wrote it back using
dd if=boot.img of=/dev/mtd/mtd0 (again without bs=4096) after this the device does not boot...
I tried to create a own update.zip with a updater-script that does what I did again but now with the original dd copy instead of my modified...
and here I have no Idea if it works or not, since the android logo with progressbar is displayed, I cannot see any ui_prints, so imposible to see what is going on..
so to my questions:
1. could the missing bs=4096 have missed some important data in the boot parition, if so, could I clone the recovery parition and use the data from there ?
2. Is it possible to hide the android logo in stock recovery, so I can add debug messages ?
3. why or how do I save data to the sdcard using stock recovery updater-script, ive tried this and it didnt give me anything:
run_program("/system/bin/cat", "/proc/mtd", ">", "/sdcard/mtd.txt"); , tried ls and few other commands also without success, seems the sdcard is not mounted in /sdcard, but thats where it was mounted when the unit worked normally (*i think*)
the unit is a totally 'no name' chinease thing, not a trace of manifacturer anywhere..
from digging around the filesystem I figured out it's a TCC9825 based thing. ADB seems not available in recovery.
cheers

additional details
The unit Im talking about is:
hxxp://xxx.ebay.com/itm/171022539874?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
If anyone wants, I can provide details of the hardware (images), how to enter recovery etc,
Ive also got the mtd copies (but not sure howto use them as I was unable to restore the device with em)
have the kernel config aswell..
it's a dual wince/android 4.0 system ( some people talk about "pure android", and I can assure you this device is a "pure", but as I said a dual cpu thing, not dual as in SMP ).

Solved it.
Got root/ bluetooth working aswell, let me know it your interested.

Did you keep that as WinCE/Android 4.0? or you put 2.3 on it?
I'm interested in getting one of the android head unit and prefer a 4.0. However, the people in ouku thread only want to discuss the "pure" unit that has only 2.3.x and I don't understand why would they prefer a 2.3.x over 4.0.

it still runs 4.0.. yes i dont understand what the deal with pure android is.
this unit is as pure android as can be. i dont think the wince part is impressive. but it does have
one advantage and that is the that you can use the fm radio before android has booted.
i assume the pure android devices must wait until android is started before they can even listen to radio...
if that is the case that then i must say im happy i didnt get one of the those units.

I have the Sony XAV-601BT which is also running Android, but of course a very tailored made one for car stereo. No wifi, no Play Store, no games, no Google Map... just things for regular car stereo. But at least it can show my Asian songs with Unicode characters in artist and song name right, that's a big deal to me. You might not notice it's Android until the "The application is not responding....wait or kill" dialog appears
It also has 10 second or more boot time (didn't exactly time it) and the backup camera will need to wait after that. Usually, I'm already halfway thru in backing up
So, I'm not looking for another car head unit to replace another's that can't display Unicode characters and can run Android 4.0 apps will be a big plus.

Ok,
Well, this unit I have is not exactly "high quality", but it does run android 4.0 and it does "work", so I must say im quite happy with it...
as for recomendations...for what I payed (~500$) im happy..but due to the price I set my expectations low.. I think a unit with the same features but with a
more known brand would cost atleast the double, but then again the quality of such unit would probably be better. (when I say quality, I mean things like buttons, screen resolution, bootup speed, manual quality etc etc), but thats not something that bothers me much...

A good reason not to upgrade to the new Market in Froyo

Market filters:
When a user searches or browses in Android Market, the results are filtered, and some applications might not be visible. For example, if an application requires a trackball (as specified in the manifest file), then Android Market will not show the app on any device that does not have a trackball.
The manifest file and the device's hardware and features are only part of how applications are filtered — filtering also depends on the country and carrier, the presence or absence of a SIM card, and other factors.
Changes to the Android Market filters are independent of changes to the Android platform itself. This document will be updated periodically to reflect any changes that occur.

That's not really a good reason to do anything, let alone not using 2.2

Not being able to get apps? Did you read the link? Doubtful. Uh sure. Have fun with vanilla 2.2 and 0.0 apps.
I'm sorry, did you read your own link? If you had scrolled down, it shows several examples of what can be filtered. The filters are implemented by the application developer themselves, and if they don't, they still show up in the market.
Besides, filtering by the application has been in Android since 2.0. Any application that deems a device incapable of running it (for example, a lack of a light sensor) can stop itself from running.
some kind of filter (the ones I've heard of so far are incompatible screen resolution, unverified builds, and protected apps) is already being applied to 2.1 in the AOSP build. I couldnt see Yelp, the Android Community and TMZ apps for whatever reason

Oh yeah, how suspicious. French people couldn't possibly prefer apps in French and people with that new Dell pad thing probably still want SMS and contact apps.
Yeah
so you are saying not upgrade to 2.2 because marketplace will filter apps for our phone, but stick with 2.1 because it doesn't?
well genius, why don't you go and install http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.yelp.android on your phone and let us know how that 'no filtering' works out for you.
When I was running my Vougue we ran into this problem as well, its not a big deal at all. from what I remember it was checking about the build.prob and screen size that is setup in your startup. what I used to do was set my phone to my the specs for the G1, then install the apps after adjusting the density to fit everything on screen and then reboot using factory startup. it worked pretty well for most of the apps since many only blocked off whatever border the developer had.
heres the problem though but with the pace we are going it wont come up for a while, once we decide we have a rom stable enough to flash we lost the abilty to change the settings since WM is copletely gone and no haret was used. I switched over to the Touch Pro and we had the exact same problem which was solved in the EXACT way but we were not flashed still(TP2 still has a LOOOONG way to go sad to say), kept the touch pro 2 for only a few weeks before they replaced my Sprint Line TP with a Touch pro 2 due to all the TP1 problems and i'm still saddened by the slow progress. I am a developer myself and even an avid budsmoker and was still able to help out. now Refer has done a great job but from my understanding he is just doing most changes to the Android Filesystem, theirs a couple other guys working on the kernels which would be were all the hardware problems are going to be fixed from. no matter what build we use something in the kernel is either not right, or we dont have the driver in place for Android itself and since we have few Hardware level developers working on these things it seems to be low progress.

Can I get an idea of how "functional" Android is on this phone?

Currently I'm an HD2 user. I like the fact that Android has started to port onto the HD2. Still I know it's a long ways from being done or close to done and so far the only one I can think of being anywhere near done is the TP and TP2. Both have been out long enough to at least have the Android port worked on for a longer time. While I do read that it's good a lot of Android phone users suggest that the porting comes no where near close to how well the real Android phones work. Is this true? As far as apps and functionality and comparability goes how close is the Android port to the real thing? Would some of you rather have a real Android phone instead of this?

The closest to a native Android device would be the vogue. They pretty much have functionality everywhere and even flash to nand. In comparison we aren't too far behind as the things we are currently lacking is the camera.
Obviously there are bugs here and there but its still usable. Older builds are more stable and we've just recently jumped onto 2.2 Froyo so it will take some time to fix the bugs. We've actually accomplished something great and actually surpass a native android phone in benchmark scores even though our devices aren't hugely optimized. I've seen the HD2 video booting XDANDROID; i've even posted it in our 2.1 thread and from what i see its was running pretty quick during the SetupWizard. cough* cough* ...snapdragon ;p
Lastly yes i would never go back to WM or even get an iphone. I've bought a nexus one and have never looked back. From what i see once you go Android you don't go back and at Google IO they certainly showed us why.
I would love to start adding support for HD2 for XDANDROID. But i'm currently busy with my new role as Moderator

I got a nexus one because its cool and has great specs and also because of the android ports. You cant stay on the same phone forever and it was time for me to upgrade and at the time TP2 or topaz didn't interest me. So i decided to wait for N1
For me it is very close to replacing WM on my raph110. Really, battery life issue is holding me back. I can turn off sync and run as "just a phone" for a long time, but as soon as I start to use it as a smartphone, I better make sure I am near a power supply.
As a phone its better than winmo IMO, making and receiving calls and SMS is downright clunky in WM compared to these android builds.
All it would take for me to switch is the ability to run with sync on, and use some moderate smartphone-y features here and there for an entire day and I am set. At the moment I use android when I am plugged in, then reboot into WM when I know I am going to be away from power for a length of time.
Compared to other android phones I have played with, the raph seems downright speedy. Most time when I have played with android phones they seem laggy and slow, where my phone with these android builds seems much more responsive and mostly lag free. I have considered picking up an Aria if I come across a cheap one but only because of the battery thing and no other reason.
To give you more info I have a Fuze (raph110) and run NRG's WM 6.5.5 / SenseUI 2.5 ROMs.
The best part of this project is you run WinMo in tandem - Android is simply running off of the SD card, so there's virtually nothing that would break your phone or SD card permanently. All of the outright hardware failures I've seen in any forum related to this project has been a simple hardware failure - nothing with Android broke the device basically.
So try it out! You've got nothing to lose. Then you'll have a much better idea of how 'functional' it is
Well I have tried it on the HD2, but nothing is exactly functional to say the least. I mean, it runs, but not much else to say about it. I wonder when they port and finish being able to get the antennae working, gps, camera, wifi, bt, etc. what all that will mean as far as how functional it will be. Will programs be able to be installed and USE all the functional devices? Games supposedly need OpenGl to work and I bet that is another can of worms. I'm all for it working and everything, but I wonder if when the project ends will it be that much better or am I better off getting a Nexus One in the end.

Well I don't know if it'll *ever* be truly perfect compared to native devices... but looking at a) what we have working on our TP's and b) what the vogue guys have working on their devices....
Basically it looks like it'll be darned close to having an actual Android device... which is amazing, to say in the least. I'm not sure how long the vogue's battery lasts, but other than that and camera, our devices are fairly complete on the hardware front. Vogue's even have a functional camera!
3d is also working, so OpenGL will not be a problem It's just a matter of getting the 3d drivers for the GPU!

So what do you think it's worth holding onto the device and not just get an Android device just yet? How long would you all feel it'll be till Android is as usable on the HD2 as it is on the Vogue or any multi-boot device?
Also, still what about the programs? Like if you have a program like Shopsavvy and you have the camera working will it and should it work on the device like the Vogue? Or is it a no go because it's not a legit supported device?

In the end its entirely up to you. The HD2 has started on its journey to port linux and there no timeline on when it will be done. Even our linux kernel is not complete but devs are working on it and it grows and grows.
So if you have the dough and time go and try out a android device and see what you think. If you like go buy it otherwise be patient like most other members and you'll see a functional port guarenteed.
Apps will work if you have the function available in most cases.

Exactly. I used XDAndroid on my Fuze to decide that Android was in fact for me, and I bought a Motorola Milestone. We have a mostly working system here, the battery life sucks and theres no camera (and there was no bluetooth when I upgraded, nor was there 3D obviously, and Cellular had problems staying connected) but I was able to get a feel for the Android system, the market, what was out there and decided to make a go of it. I've been quite happy. I keep coming back to see Android on my Fuze because I have a feeling that it'll make a good spare device, or a giveaway device, or whatever. Even if it is just an MP3 player with a prepaid SIM in it that I can leave under the seat of my car - I'll be getting more mileage on this device running Android than I would on Windows Mobile.

Agreed, Im just disolved now with WM, had a look at XDAndroid and am impressed big time.
Once this is an every-day OS to run (in terms of battery life and stability) I will have the device I wanted to start with....forward facing cameras for video calling (when its available), hardware keyboard and a nice form factor.
XDAndroid runs seemigly far nicer than the native OS the phone was designed for!!! Says it all!!

Shopsavvy will not work properly on the Vogue because the camera on the Vogue has a fixed focus, and the barcode recognition algorithm in Barcode Scanner (ZXing) and Shopsavvy is not advanced enough to recognize blurred barcodes like RedLaser can on the iPhone 2G/3G. Once the camera works on the RAPH, Shopsavvy should do well on it since as far as I know the camera has autofocus.
Camera apps in general are hit and miss because Android has a rather poor camera API which exposes a lot of the underlying camera implementation (color space, framerate, encoding) to the app trying to use the camera - this is why whenever a new official Android phone comes out there are generally new versions of camera apps on the market (the Samsung Moment was the worst culprit of this - almost no camera applications worked out-of-the-box on it).
But as a rule of thumb - yes - the phone is running Android and the fine people working on development try to implement everything to spec, so for all intents it appears to an application the same as any "official" phone does. As a matter of fact, the Android porting community is doing *exactly* what a phone manufacturer does internally when releasing a new Android phone - just more publicly and with less documentation and more reverse-engineering.
I love xdandroid,i don't use camera so only the market bug in the latest froyo bulid is a bad thing for me,but i think that babijoee and all the xdandroid team can fix it.

What Market bug? Did you try deleting your data.img?
i think all the new problems may be due to old data.img
Since the framework and structure of the updates are always updated/changing we do require people to have a new data.img
If problems persist after making a new data.img then we will have to look into it
The camera and the extremely innaccurate battery meter are dealbreakers for me I really hope you'll manage to fix it soon, btw why not make a thread called "What we're working on", would be pretty interesting

the problem is when i try to log in with a google account or when i try to create one,i put username and password,i press next and after 5 minutes it says impossible to connect to google's server
i connect through wi-fi and connection works...maybe i should try to log in when no sim inserted, because doing a fresh install of android without sim solved this problem when i was using donut 1.6

[Q] New Sense from Desire HD

May be a stupid question, but is there anyway to extract the new version of sense from the HD Rom and add it to a EVO rom so we can have the new sense and all our other phone features working?

I think having just sense rosie, lock, music, etc is what he was talking about. A flashable zip to update your current Rom, not a camera broken port. I would love the same.
I believe is not possible since they haven't done it yet , but maybe we get an update with the new sense which imo it was supposed to be for froyo since all the features like backup all the apps is a froyo thing and we didn't get it in ours cause they wanted to show this.phone with 2.2 asap, and not another deal beaker like the hero

Im glad you know what people are meaning to ask
I would hope, that everything said is taken at face value and people don't try to look for some hidden message
I know about the roms floating around out there, have flashed a couple, but they all have something broken, hence "having all our phone features working." A flashable zip would be the ticket, that way we could update whichever rom we prefer using...
HTC weaves sense into android very deeply so it's easier said then done, but people are still working on it so it could happen. Even so if HTC sticks to their pattern and releases another towards the end of the month they may beat us to it. Either way it's not something you're likely to see in a flashable zip that can update ROMs, it's too drastic of a change.
Difficult :/
I have been working on such a thing for almost two weeks now. It started when I just wanted the new music ui. I tried porting that and then I found that after porting it wouldnt show up in the programs list so i needed to modify some files to get it in there. I got that far only to find that it would crash on opening. Further investigation showed that when you open the app it also loads the matching widget and DLNA stuff. I proceeded to port both of those also to find that the DLNA stuff requires a customized wifi stack. Still havnt fixed that but I also found that all of them rely on the HTC copyright apk which cannot coexist with the one already on the EVO that everything elce uses. Simply put, it would just be easier to port over everything than just parts. Sorry bud

This is a new thread for this car dvd that was first reported on comment #2224 of the AN-21 U thread.
Probably you are here because:
you want to root your unit. Only units with ROMs 4.2.2 can be rooted (see below how). The only way to have a rooted 4.4.x is installing a pre-rooted ROM (see below how)
you have a problem (no internet, no sound, buttons do not work, bad mic quality, rear camera image not showing, door opening not showing, etc.
you want to upgrade your unit to a newer software that has sleep mode, personalized music app, personalized functions, root, xposed, can remap buttons, etc.
All this is covered in this post and most of the problems that you can have are summarized in this post too. Please read this first post before asking. And use the search function of the thread, before asking. Thanks.
TRICKS THAT MIGHT SAVE 1000 QUESTIONS ON THE THREAD
Read below and here for basic questions asked and answered 1000 times.
How to root my unit. Only 4.2.2 can be rooted with an app (see below). To have rooted 4.4x you must install a pre-rooted ROM (see below)
Get sound when in reverse (thanx to @Keylo Lo)
here
Engineering/Factory settings password "126" (thanx to @blankers)
This allows you to change logo, sound volume, SWC codification, etc.
Activate USB debugging --> Go to Factory Settings and enter password "adbon".
System sound is low compared to Radio--> Go to Factory settings and change volume levels
GPS button does not trigger GPS app You need to choose predefined GPS app, in Settings--> GPS
Get Into Recovery
1 Press reset button and power button together
2 After about 5 secs release reset button, but keep pressing power button
3 When booting screen appears release power button.
4 It boots into recovery.
--Update 1-- some units without front USB have a different procedure
Firstly power on the unit and then long press the power button and then reset. Then the unit will get three rings and you loose your hand on the power button and short press the power button again. (thanx @netay)
--Update 2-- some others have this procedure (thanx @R4D3N)
1. Turn off the unit by holding 3-4 sec the power button.
2. Hold the RESET button + POWER button for 5 sec
3. Release the RESET button and keep pressing the POWER button for 2 sec
4. Release the POWER button and wait. The Recovery menu appears.
5. With the Volume knob you can move up/down and long press on Volume/Power button to select the option.
Get Into Bootloader
The process is basically the same, with the difference that you need to have the computer attached to the unit via the front miniUSB (if you do not have a front USB, you will have to ask your seller how to get into bootloader mode)
1- boot the unit as usual.
2- plug the front usb of the unit to your computer usb.
3- Then, push the reset button and the power button at once and keep them pushed. The reset button is the tiny pin next to the mp3 sdcard. The power button is the volume knob. You will hear the power cut throught the speakers.
4- Release reset button and keep power button pushed. Now the unit will reboot. You will see nothing, just a black screen. Do not release the power button yet. Your computer will detect a " new hardware", that is the RolckChip. When you hear the windows noise of new detected hardware, you can release power button. It will automatically install the drivers.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR SYSTEM
BEFORE UPGRADING YOUR UNIT YOU MUST KNOW
MCU your unit, there are many (KGL, KGL1, KGL2, KGL3, KGL4, KGL5, KLD, KLD1, KLD2, JY, GS, KYD, MD, BN, HA, MX), If you install the wrong MCU, you will brick your unit.
To know which one you have. Go to Settings -->About
If still not clear, see: here or here.
If you cannot find it here, it probably means that you are in the wrong thread.
Resolution of your unit. 800x480 or 1024x600. If you install the wrong ROM, you will brick your unit.
Chip of your unit RK3066 or RK3188. It does not really matter, ROMs and MCU are compatible between chips.
IT IS ADVISABLE TO BACKUP YOUR SYSTEM BEFORE PLAYING WITH IT
Upgrading is supposed to be a safe operation, but you never know what can happen. So, before updating make sure that:
1- To backup of your system the easiest way is download nandroid root from google play, and do a nandroid backup with TWRP format). Save it in your external SD.
2- make sure you can enter in bootloader mode (see below how to)
3- it is recommended to backup your apps and data (use titanium from google play). The update will do a factory reset.
FOLLOW THIS TO UPGRADE YOUR ROM AND/OR MCU
0- Do a back up (copy the files somewhere safe) of your internal SD card memory. It will be wiped during the process.
1- Download the ROM (Resolution 1024x600 or 800x480) and MCU (KGL, KLD, JY, GS,RM, MX, BN, HA) for your unit.
ROMs--> repository This will get you a file named update.img. There are different "flavors" of ROMs.
Code:
- [user=853627]@coudu[/user] (rooted, stock). Early v4.0 and v4.1 have some problems.
- [user=3590033]@Malaysk[/user] (rooted, with very useful mods, some come with NEXT launcher)
- [user=6041319]@dsa8310[/user] (rooted, almost stock)
MCUs--> Latest MCUs by Malaysk are here . This will get you a file named mcu.img
2- copy the update.img you have chosen to the root of your GPS card.
3- copy the mcu.img for your specific unit to the root of your GPS card (if you do not want to update mcu.img, you can skip this step)
4- insert back the GPS card to the unit. If no window pops up, reboot the unit. At boot, the presence of update.img will be detected and a pop up window will ask you whether you want to update your unit. It will automatically reboot into recovery mode and update your unit. Once done, remove update.img and mcu.img from the root of the gps card or you will be asked every boot for an update.
5- In some Coudu´s (sd partition of 3Gb) and Malaysk´s ROMs versions, it is necessary to do a factory reset just after the first boot so that everything works properly.
6- If you lost buttons or radio after the upgrade --> Go to Factory settings (password 126) and choose the proper canbus for your car and the radio chipset. You can change boot logo if you want.
* If you get Google services error after upgrading to KitKat see this and this

THINGS YOU MAY WONDER BEFORE BUYING A HEADUNIT
Code:
[B]- Boot Up:[/B]: time is around 30s.
[B]- GPS[/B]: GPS positions very fast. TomTom, Navigon, Sygic, and regular off-line GPS work. Navigon and Sygic have some problems with some ROMs
[B]- Stand by mode[/B]: Latest ROMs and MCU have the possibility of choosing stand by mode with various times chosen.
[B]- Radio:[/B] radio stations are saved as frequencies
[B]- Bluetooth contacts:[/B] contacts are saved on the device.
- Works fine with Bose system (Audi)
- Possible ground loop noise that needs some tricks to be removed (see section problems)
- Torque works and can run in parallel with A2DP
- ELM327 works (might need special app like CarService in very weird cases)
- Camera works (might be better to get the one with RK3188 chip)
- There is no automatic brightness control because the unit does not have light sensor, but there are apps that can help
- The touch screen is extremely responsive. It works as good as most phones.

HOW TO ROOT AND INSTALL TWRP
Instructions to get root (thanx to @webdude12)
It only works for Android 4.2.2. If you want to root 4.4.x you need to take apart update.img and inject SuperUser app (this is only for experts as @coudu, @Malaysk, @dsa8310 ). The alternative is to install a 4.4.x pre-rooted image and you do not have to do anything else. See below in HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR UNIT section how to do it.
If you want to root your 4.2.2, download Root Master 2.1.1 here
Code:
1- Install the APK.
2- Make sure you are connected to WiFi and you have an internet connection.
3- Open Root Master (do not upgrade to newer version unless you can read chinese, The newest version has different options, all in chinese. Version 2.1.1 just has a button that says "root".))
4- Press root button
5- Chinese characters will flash across the screen.
6- A second popup box will appear, press the purple button.
The app will automatically install SuperUser.
This program connects to servers oversea sending hardware information. The downloads a script that will attempt to root the device. If the first script fails, it downloads additional ones. Future goal is monitor this communication with a data logger and find which script works, so that a unique program can be written to achieve root.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to install TWRP recovery (thanx to Abdul_pt from Freaktab and 1-2-Hak and coudu)
You do not really need to install TWRP unless you wanna mod the rom yourself, if you mod roms you will know that already.
- a.t.m. you need a mouse to use TWRP because touch is not working yet
- if you install TWRP, you will not be able to update the update.img and mcu.img the way it was explained above.
If you still want to install TWRP:
Android 4.2.2 800x480
Download files here
And follow the post by 1-2-Hak

TRICKS AND MODDED APPS THAT DO WONDERS
Install app without adb when regular install does not work
Sometimes the app won't install normally and you need to sideload it.. This means that you need a computer and adb wifi. There is another way with which you won't need a computer. You just need to install a terminal emulator (you need root ).
1- Download the terminal emulator app you prefer
2- Download the app you want to install to /mnt/sdcard
3- Open terminal emulator
4- On the terminal navigate to /mnt/sdcard by typing
Code:
- cd /mnt/sdcard
- su
- pm install "NameOfTheApp".apk
Done, you are app is now installed.

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS FOUND BY THE USERS
Unfortunately the first issues with the promising unit arrived.
@webdude12 got a black screen while driving due to a broken clip (see attachment to figure out which one). One solution is to glue the clip so that it does not get loose. Not doing that can end up in major problems.
Unit might not boot on very hot conditions as it has a thermostate to avoid possible problems. It will work normally when cooled down.
Some apps do not show completely in the screen due to the low resolution.
However, there's a great solutions for that:
- you need root
- install xposed framework (google it)
- probably you need to sideload the apk with ADB as the unit refuses to install it normally.
- install "app settings" module in xposed framework (you can change dpi for individual apps and make them fit in the screen)
When add a google account, it doesn't show under accounts

Wifi or buttons do not work after update to 1.86 or 1.99 firmware versions
- This happens because the MCU or kernel of the new version is not adequate for your unit. Luckily MCUs and kernels are mixable for the same unit.
fix --> Install newest firmware with an older MCU in the usual way. Then install the kernel of a version you know used to work.
To install kernel alone --> Here and files needed here.

I don't think anyone has this unit yet...you could be the first !
Mine has also shipped but I don't have a tracking number yet, so don't know where it is, or when it will arrive.
If yours arrives before mine I will be interested to see your review......
Being in the car stereo industry for years and only ever owning Alpine radio's, it took a leap of faith for me to order this, but since I was able to put it on business AMX, that offers me 100% buyer protection, I decided why not.
Since it will only take about 10 mins to install in my A4, sure I will do the second I get it. But will try to do a little unboxing video too

Nice !
I am really looking forward to it. I am about to order a unit for myself and I would appreciate if, when you receive it, you could share your experiences on:
- boot time
- sound quality from radio and SD card files. Also radio reception.
- gps response and use
- screen brightness on direct sun
- bluetooth utilities, A2DP, micro and call quality,
- internet surfing experience in general and for streaming like spotify, pandora, ... etc
I will update the first post with all the info that you provide.
Nice

Which seller have you been dealing with ?
I've just received the tracking number for my shipment.....
Here is the seller I ordered from:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2014...acitive-Screen-Car-DVD-player/1662316562.html
Like I said I got it for $490 shipped to the US. Remember, I know that sounds high compared to the $260 + s/h, but I am getting all the pieces and parts that make it intergrate into the rest of Audi (i.e. CAN-BUS, so the remote display between my speedometer and tachometer still shows radio info, direct steering wheel controls, etc)..
The seller has confirmed its the same unit as mentioned in the first post.
I should be able to comment on all items except screen in direct sun. My windows are tinted with 15% window tint on the side, and 50% tint on the windshield. I will try to roll down the windows and see what I can feedback on.

Yes, they have ran out of units. I was also talking to him (kaigele) and they said that they have1 month delay.
Apparently they are selling a lot of units.
Maybe you can try other resellers like:

or the one posted by @webdude12
However, I do recommend staying with kaigele. He is very responsive, seems to know about car stereos and speaks good english (with respect to alibaba and aliexpress standards..).

Green Point was very responsive to all my questions. Even knew what XDA was. His store is here: http://www.aliexpress.com/store/205122
Ask for a discount, my guess is you will get something. The nice thing about Green Point is he ships everything via FedEx, so no waiting weeks for the unit. He also claims that they bench test every unit before shipping to help eliminate DOA possibilities.
So FedEx has manage to loose my radio between Memphis and Nashville (4 Hour Drive). They show it being unloaded from a plane in Memphis, and loaded onto a truck that was headed to Nashville on Thursday. But it was never unloaded in Nashville. I have been on and off the phone with them all day today. Sad thing is today was my Birthday, and this was my present to myself. So I really wanted to play.
The vendor said that if its truely lost, they will get one out as soon as FedEx admits that. I want to go track down the truck driver that has my radio in his car. LOL

I know what it's like when you're waiting for a shipment...then it disappears...wtf !
Should be easy enough to find the culprit with the tracking, but I don't suppose they will even try !
And I was looking forward to your review......

After talking with a supervisor the other day, they said that its possible and does happen sometime that as a trailer is being unloaded, a box will slide off the conveyor belt, and then accidentally get set to the side for manual sort later. Then it sometimes gets mis-placed during this process. He didnt know about Nashville, but the packages in most cities are not scanned as they come off the truck, but as they go through the sorting process in that warehouse. He was confident that they might find it Monday, but could make me no promises.

Without knowing too much about android roms, seeing as we have the source code does that make it likely that it is possible someone would be able to build a custom rom for these devices?
Or would we still need to unlock the bootloader etc?

Alfawise Tab 7.9 inch, an iPad clone with great performances but....

Hi all,
I've noticed the Alfawise Tab tablet on Gearbest Mod Edit: Selling site link removed.
As reviewed by some, this tablet seems great at a very low cost. It has the screen, the sounds, the battery, the form factor etc...
Mod Edit: Video link removed for promoting selling site.
Sadly, searching for at least a "support" or "download firmware" doesn't return any results.
It only has Android 6 with security patches from March 2016.
I'm a bit concerned about security, but not that much, since I only use my current tablet for reading and browsing (so... a pdf reader and Chrome is enough).
I've seen in some other review that an anti-malware check returned nothing (minute 5m 24s, in the view below). So, this tablet may be clean, just the software outdated.
Mod Edit: Video link removed for promoting commercial selling.
So, I'm just interested in BUGS right now, if any. The iFive tablet seems to also have an outdated Android 6 version and it has some pretty annoying issues mentioned HERE, on XDA forums
If you have this tablet, please tell me: what bugs did you find? Force crashes of apps, deadlocks, SoD, etc... ?
Kind regards
I have the tablet since last week now...
i have to say I have several Android tablet Teclast x98Air, x98Air2, Cube i7, iFive 4S... I have rooted all my tablet, some by mounting a factory system partition on my computer and manually adding su binaries. I switched also to iPad mini 4 for 1 year and half or so... In short, I know what kind of issue you can meet and what is a good tablet according to chinese standard and can compare with other kind of devices...
The Alfawise Tab is an amazing piece of hardware AND software for the bucks :
Hardware :
- Good Audio
- Slim. Not as much as an iPad mini but slimmer then iFive 4s (which is a ****ing piece of crap).
- Great screen : it's 1536 x 2048. Clear, bright... You get it.
- USB-C charge.
- Storage seems fast enough.
- Decent battery life.
- It's metal. Not ****ty plastic like iFive.
- Good build according to chinese standard. Not as good as Xiaomi but still pretty good. Better than Teclast.
Software :
- No bloatware, crapware, ****ware of any kind... It's stock Android. Period.
- Fully loaded with google suite : Appstore and the whole google ecosystem (map, book, film, chatting stuffs, music, assistant, youtube).
- NO SoD, NO crash, no infamous shutdown... Nothing. The thing is as stable and smooth as swiss clock.
- It's fast. NO lags. (But i idn't test any game. And I'm more like puzzle game than car or fight).
Only downside : I couldn't find any factory rom on the web, neither boot image. There is no "su" binary in the system partition (???), the rom is a production one and adb root is disabled so there is no way to make a dump of boot and system partition as a backup or material to root or custom rom (as far as I know). Couldn't find a way to contact Alfawise. There is no contact form or any information on that matter on their website to ask them to release the factory rom for public consumption.
Great reply, @w1nst0n sm1th, and I totally agree with you about the downsides!

First of all, thank you very much for replying with such useful information. I too noticed the PROs of this and I'm glad you confirmed them.
As for the downsides, yes!, those quoted concern me the most. No support, no contact, no "download firmware" section.
However, this is not really that bad, given that other popular brands in China will make you almost flash a new ROM when they release an update (no OTA or not working).
For example, the iFive is backed by a s***ty website with updates and support. Each update is tagged with a hardware version. In their case, you have to update the right tablet with the corresponding ROM, otherwise you are probably screwed. (please correct me if I'm wrong regarding the updating process in the case of iFive)
I prefer a stable OS with no updates and no support page :good: rather than an unstable OS , with updates that patch the issues reported on an official support page.
Thank you again for your opinion.
I hope others will join this thread with hands-on experiences.
@w1nst0n sm1th do you feel like it's a good upgrade from ifive mini 4s (battery life, audio output, video decoding)? have you tried 10 bit videos? thinking of upgrading, using it mostly for reading, watching x265 videos & Twitch.
looks like they can be contacted through here : https://www.alfawise.com/category-contact

It's definitelly a good upgrade. Quality is clearly above iFive 4s, as well for hardware than software.

I don't really measure it. But since i had the occasion to compare with iFive 4s I bought 2 months earlier, it seemed to me the battery life lasted longer, as long as you don't leave the tablet in a state of heavy duty without putting it in deep sleep (screen switched off), like screen on with a game started on the foreground or background.
Once on heavy duty, the battery will soon decrease rapidly, but that's the case with every tablet.
Does it support Full HD Netflix?
Hi all,
Does this tablet support viewing Netflix in Full HD?
I know many of the chinese tablets do not support this due to moded or non-certified OS...
Kind regards

Stupid me .... I needed the pull down menu .... and choose file transfer instead of usb charging ......omg , stupid me.
Its working now.
firmware
The tablet is a rebranded JDtab 01. In order to find firmware for this one google "needrom jdtab" (i can't post a link), but it needs a premium account, i also found it and downloaded from another site, google "panuso.com52949643", i uploaded it to my google drive (i can email the link to anyone that need it). I think it's possible to use the scatter file from the JDtab's rom to take a backup for the rom and create CWM recovery, in order to root, or even flash the entire rom to the tablet (there is a post at androidiani.com, you can google "androidiani. alfawise tab root" in order to find it. Also you can google "rom development for Mediatek MT8173 & MT8176 " , maybe you find something useful.
Bugs?
Has anyone managed to root the device , take a backup or flash Jdtab's rom? I have a problem with many apps that want to draw over other and I can't give them the permission to do it. Also there isn't a reboot selection (strange for Android 6). Another major problem is that there isn't Wi-Fi hot-spot setting and there isn't any way to activate it, (unable to use shareit or midrop). Lastly, when you power off the device and boot it again, it takes a very long time to boot.
ROOT for JDTAB
Here is a tutorial that i found, explaining hot to root JDTAB: Google "baidu5615963852"
Maybe appliable to our tablet by only flashing boot.img (if the boot.img is compatible with ours).
I also found that MTK8173 can be generally rooted with magidisk, but we can only use JDTAB'S boot.img.
So if someone is risky enough, can give it a try.
I made flashable rom zip for custom recovery (TWRp etc) using JDTAB'S stock rom for spflashtools with android kitchen. I HAVEN'T TESTED IT
Link : https://drive.google.com/file/d/11aWntKplL8p8Ik_0O5rNr5b85JKzwbs2/view
There is a MT8173 TWRP for porting, maybe someone can make a working TWRP. I used Alfawise's stock recovery and tried 3 differend methods, none worked.

Alfawise tab firmware
Good news!
I managed to get the official firmware and tool from Gearbest.
So if anyone ends bricking his device, can hopefully restore it with this firmware.
I will also try to port TWRP with this stock recovery.img
Here is the alfawise image&tool download address in baidu cloud:
https://pan.baidu.com/s/12ojEZHuw16uUS42Op2qWaw
PassWord:fz8b
I will also upload it to Google Drive tomorrow.
For now, here is Alfawise's stock recovery.img and scatter: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ppChA43MamPdVtli6JKnc9Hp33zHWMid
ROOT tutorial for JDTAB, probably appliable to Alfawise: https://tieba.baidu.com/p/5615963852

i bought the tab from gearbest. the tab switches on rarely. currently the tab wont switch on and don't know if it'll ever switch on. from day 1 i'm facing this issue. Don't know if it's the battery/ power / display issue. the charging indicator light is displayed when connected to battery. pressing the power + volume down button continuously for more than a minute is also not helping. tried charging the battery one whole night. still no luck. Any help is appreciated

First try to hold the power button pressed over 15 seconds . If that doesn't help, try to reflash the official firmware.

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, reflashing the official firmware too didn't help resolve the issue.

In this case you should open a Ticket to Gearbest (do not mention that you reflashed the firmware).
