Help with Root/upgrade - Sony Xperia ZL

Just got my ZL and I must say (till now) this phone is kickass. As you might have imagined, I cannot wait to root it, but I have also seen talk of an update on the XDA forums, I have been through tons of threads on both rooting and upgrading, but am still a bit confused.
My ZL has the follwoing specs:
Model C6506
Firmware; 10.1.A.1.434
Android OS: 4.1.2
So the question is, which is the best way to go for rooting/updating the software?? Thanks

Personally, i would do the following :
1. Update the official way via Sony PC Companion, which should bring you to Firmware 10.3.1.A.0.244
2. Follow one of the guide to root.
3. With it rooted, install CWM / TWRP.
This is my preferred method, others may do otherwise.
Thanks.

This is not a question that should clog up a dedicated development section. That's what the general section's for.

Question don't belong in Development, thread moved to Q&A.
Thanks

Sorry for posting in the wrong section.... I'll give takagen's suggestion a try. I'l llet you know. Thanks.

Tried updating via PC companion but no updated firmware available. Any way to force the update or flash it?? Thanks.

Nevermind. Im reading doomlords thread.

And this is not the Q&A section.

Then Try to post in the right section first. Otherwise Mods will close/delete your thread.
Which ROM you have? Gingerbread or ICS?
And what is the build number? GB - 0.42/0.58/0.62 or ICS -4.0.3 or 4.0.4
I have Gingerbread 2.3.3
Build number 3.0.1.a.0.145
You're running an old version of android. Not even 2.3.4
But if you just want to root this version, just search for Gingerbreak. You just need to transfer it to your phone and install it like a regular .apk
Cheers!

Well Xtacy already suggested you the way, which is right.
Can you upgrade the Android Version, Like the latest Android 4.0.4. That is easily Rootable.
You can also upgrade to Android 2.3.4 [Build 0.42 or 0.58] which is easily rootable to using Doomlord kit.

My phone ask for a update : should I'll have to Root again ?

Hi all
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (GT-I8160) PDA:LD8 PHONE:LD8 CSC:LD3 (XEO).

Kies ask me to update my phone for this version : PDA:LK6 / PHONE:LK6 / CSC:LK1 (XEO)
If I update my phone, should I root again my phone ? With the same method, or an other because of the different version (was LDA8, will be a LK6) ?
Thanks for your help.
Sorry for my bad english

Alright, first of all.. please learn to search the forums. This is to avoid spam and repetition of questions. There's a Q and A thread for Ace 2, which is found here.
You might ask, "why will I post there?" Most users are subscribed to that thread, waiting to see if someone posted a new question thus, increasing the chance that your question will be seen since most users are accessing the forums from their smartphones, they tend to overlook the other parts of the forums.
If you have time, PC with Odin, and common sense then try this method. Flashing a pre-rooted stock rom (Note: This method will not increase your counter). As for the LK6 firmware, see this
For the latest firmwares (pre-rooted), see the thread here

[Q] Xperia S - ICS rooted and I'd like to update

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this has been answered before as I've actually found many threads but they all seem to redirect to the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
My questions is as follows; using the method above, how can I update an Xperia S that is already rooted without loosing root? The thread above seems to explain how to root altogether, but I just want to update and keep the root. Thanks in advance for any help provided. My Xperia S is on 6.1.A.0.452 and I'd like to have 6.1.A.2.45. I've also seen people talk about JellyBean but as far as I know that's not available on the Xperia S until February, how are these people getting it?
.45 and .50 can be rooted...

Could I bother you with a guide based on the method shown in the following link? I would really appreciate it. I'm totally a noob, but I learn really fast, so guidance for this rookie will guarantee you that I will learn to do things on my own. Thanks!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1886460
Just use the binary root tool at the top of the development forum

[Q] Rooting toolkit for xperia arc & JB

Hi All,
Since this is my first post I am unable to ask this in the relevant thread so apologies. I was just wondering if the excellent rooting toolkit posted on the other thread is available with JB instead of ICS? I know there are guides to flashing xperia arc LT15i to JB but none I can find that don't require the bootloader unlocked..
Thanks for your support

Why would you need it? There is no JB for our phones, so it is not needed. All custom ROMs are already rooted, so you don't need to do anything.
Perhaps I misunderstand the process then, I understood that in order to upgrade phone I had to have bootloader unlocked OR phone rooted. I am basing this assumption on the information I found androidgadgematic.com/2012/09/root-sony-xperia-arc-lt15-arc-s-lt18-ics.html you mention that there is no JB for xperia but I have seen several vids on youtube that claim otherwise, but again I stand to be corrected.
In essence I have an xperia arc LT15i running GB that I cannot unlock the bootloader on and I am trying to find a way to upgrade it to JB. I have been searching here, youtube, xperia blog etc but cannot find a way to do this with bootloader locked. Then I came across the method linked earlier that seems to do the job for ICS but would like JB.
Hope my rambling makes sense...
thanks again for your time

It amazes me how many new members sign up here, come straight to Q&A claiming to have searched, this that and the other then ask a question which they could find the answer for in the stickys prefixed [GUIDE] in General.
Click the first link in my sig and read from start to finish, then you might understand a bit better.
with respect I have spent over 2 days searching this site for information, perhaps I mis-understood it or was looking at the wrong info but that does not change the fact that I have genuinely tried to find an answer myself prior to posting. I think this is borne out by both the xda link and the link to androidgadgematic. It is unfair of you to assume that I am misrepresenting myself.
I would much prefer to have found a solution myself as it is faster and avoids these situations I will have a look at the links you have indicated
thanks

I assume it based on the fact that 9 out of 10 users who say they have searched actually haven't which 9 times out of 10 is usually proven by a Google search of the actual thread title they started theirs with, and if you have actually spent 2 days looking then I'm amazed you don't seem to have read any of the stickys or JB type ROM threads either which would have answered your query of having a locked boot loader.
Anyway, let us know how you get on.
I take your point and thanks for the links I have since rooted phone and installed CWM, Someguyfromhell mentioned no JB for Arc yet I see ROMs here which is somewhat confusing can you clarify?
Thanks

The clues in the title - [CM10 Based][MIUI CM10 Based], it's not officially been released and as someguy has already said custom ROMs will be rooted anyway so you don't have to. First thing to do now you're rooted is to backup your Phone in CWM then start looking at flashing ROMs.
So after a lot of reading tonight I think I see my issue, I checked se site and ICS is available for LT15i but clearly not released by my carrier (PC companion says I am up to date on (GB 3.0.1.A.0.145 sigh). I could install the stock rom if my phone was able to have bootloader unlocked (*#*#7378423#*#* bootloader not shown in configuration menu) and apparently there is no way to do this other than pay for it which sucks!
The only alternative is to install a custom ROM that works with a locked bootloader but I cannot figure out which ones will work for me so for now I think I just have to wait for my carrier or fork out €€€...
Thanks for your help and patience

You don't need unlocked bootloader to install stock ROM. If you do it via Flashtool.
I have tried installing 4.1.A.0.562 (perhaps this is not the correct ROM) using flashtool (using flashmode) and it bombed out then I tried xpart cwm but same result just looked at your ROM link and will try again with 4.1.B.0.431
Cheers

Hi irish, just a few comments, not sure how you've read my guide and come away with the conclusion that you need to unlock the bootloader to update your ROM or why you're trying to flash 2 old ROMs when I link to the latest 587. Patience is key.
ok so a severe case of brain fart I think, back when I tried this at the start of the week the flashboot failed hence my assumption that it was related to bootloader locked and hence my chasing down rabbit holes began. Looks like it was all down to having MTP enabled!! I am flashing A version of 587 I found earlier in the week (could not fine a link a 587 ROM on your post but this post indicates that 431 is oldest for LT15i.....?. Anyway it is flashing now and I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your assistance. I think I have been reading so many posts and hoping back and forth I have tied myself in knots
Thanks again

It can happen. Sorry about the link, I wrote a guide specifically for the Arc which you can find HERE and forgot I'd removed it from my sig so my bad on that. You can find a 587 ftf HERE
Guys
So sorry I had thought I had posted an update, needless to say all worked well for me. Thanks again for all the help

Search.
I don't think . 55 (stock) can be rooted as of now.. Though I have seen some Pre -Rooted .55 stock Rom here in XDA..
The only way to root. 55 is to flash the Pre-Rooted .55 Rom..
There are at least two threads on how exactly how one does it.
I would know, I did it myself by searching, not expecting everyone to spoon-feed me the answers.
