Sending my GSII for warranty repair - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So over the weekend, my phone started rebooting on its own..Thought it was a ROM bug, but every ROM I switched to (Even clean backups) would have an issue with locking the phone (Lockscreen would come back on within a second) and automatically shutting down/rebooting.... So I Odin'd back to stock and sent it to Samsung... Should I have any worries about them being able to see I was rooted at any point? I know this is such a noob question, but I just want the damn thing fixed without issues. Thoughts?

Simple answer, no they will never know, descriptive answer lol, 9x out of 10 sammy never turns the phones on, u will probably get a completely diff phone back, all they do with these is either wipe and reflash if its a software issue, or junk for parts and refurbs if its hardware related, I've never seen an issue with any Hercules warranty because of rooting

Random freezes/ shutdowns?

So I picked this phone up yesterday. Everything seems great, after about an hr I rooted the phone and installed cwr.
Suddenly after about another hr I got a random freeze and then it shut down, at the time I was browsing the web. Boot it back up and within 4 hrs I got 3 more freezes /shutdowns.
At this point I went ahead and installed EB1.1 this morning hoping this would solve the problem.
Well it didn't, I've had 5 shutdowns in about a 10 hr span.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Unfortunately I wasn't stock long enough to see if it was caused by root and/or cwr.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
The freezes /shutdowns have happened doing different things and even while not even being used.
[Problem] So it freezes and shutsdown right after and I have to do a battery pull because it won't let me reboot without it.
It happens randomly and quite often.
It's not a rom problem because it was happening before I flashed it.
Really happy with this phone and I really don't want to go exchange. Asking this forum before I call T-Mobile because most likely they will have me do a factory reset, for them that solves everything!
Thanks.

I fixed permissions when I flashed the rom.
What difference would it make to do it again?
What do you think the problem is that this would help?
Either way I'm gonna fix permission and see how it goes.
Thanks!
Hercules, Hercules!!
I have had my phone for over a week and started having issues about 2 days later after root. My battery would not update and i was running updates from the market and the phone froze and shut down.
Rebooted and charged over night. I woke up around 4am and my phone was very hot. I got up this morning and flashed EB1.1 and so far no issues. It was odd and i cant quite find the root cause as to why it froze. no real issues before i rooted and no issues after i flashed EB.

Wont hurt. Try wipe cache and data too
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Well wiped cache and dalvik, also fixed permissions.
No go, same problem.
I'm gonna wait to flash any new rom the comes out to see if it fixes anything. If not I'll just have to return.
I know with my G2X I was having random reboots and flashing certain roms would fix it so hoping for the same here.
Hercules, Hercules!!
Not sure if this will help, but when I got the phone on release it would constantly shut down and would not turn on. I had to keep holding Power button, much longer than normal. I ended up restoring the phone to factory default settings. No more random shut downs since.
Any chance did you restore any apps on titanium backup with old system data? That can cause alot of issues.

Yeah, I know bout that one. No I didn't do that, I actually wiped my SD card as well just in case something on there was causing it and no go.
I was curious to see if root could of caused any issues, but I guess not because no one else is reporting same issue.

I was still on stock. Yes a factory reset.
The phone would shut off while in apps or trying to surf the web. It would also randomly shut off while in my pant pocket and in my jacket pocket.
I get random reboots, stock and stock rooted, haven't flashed a rom yet. Reboots a few times a day usually, is kind of annoying, gonna flash a rom, see if that helps, otherwise I'll be hitting up tmobile too.
Sure don't have this problem

[Q] Does your phone randomly reboots?

I'm not sure if this has happened to anyone else..
However, this seems to be an ongoing issue with me and Android.
I've had the X10a and Nexus One .. both after only rooting it and using a different rom. While making phone calls and charging.. my phone would reboot..
Or playing a game on the phone.. it would reboot. I basically couldn't do anything without the phone rebooting. Which was sad.
Now with the Galaxy S2X.. This very same issue just happened to me moments ago.
Should I have never rooted it or changed the rom in the first place?
It was running very well before I decided to do so.. even while charging and talking on the phone.
Its funny because it just happened while charging.... I'm not even on the phone myself.
Does anyone seem to have any problem with this when using custom ROMs?
Because if this is true.. then I guess I'll flash the stock kernel and stuff back on the phone just to HOPE it doesn't occur then. :/
I've only experienced this after trying different roms and kernels. I flashed the stock kernel and the deodex rooted stock rom back at the same time and have had no such things happen again.
Imo, stock always runs better than any other rom. I always get better battery too.
My sensation was/is the same way, reboots, dropped signals and all until I put it back to stock rooted. Now it's fine.

Deebo took your bike too?
Yes I have had it more often on this phone though but it has been fixed by wiping the proper things first then flashing. If not then you might need to redownload the file.
If that doesnt work then you need to make sure that the kernel you are using is compatible with the rom
Also make sure that you are using the proper cpu software for the kernel.. Setcpu seems to work good for most but on Juggernauts new kernel they highly recommend Fauxclock .
I've run roms and kernels since we got root. Never had a random reboot or any other problem for that matter.

The only thing I'm worried about is if I continue to wipe and reinstall these customs ROM's that this issue could worsen, but you said that Fauxclock was highly recommended for Jug's Rom? I should try that out myself.
I've always done exactly what was written on the Instructions themselves.
But as for now. . I did a full wipe.. including my SD and the USB data and did a practice call for roughly an hour with me playing games and surfing. So far, there has been any problems. I hope this is perm!
I'd hate to waste another $500 phone D:
As far as the problem kernel with rom etc..
I am running Jug's rom straight. No different kernel's nothing.
I just had it happen to me last night. First time on this phone it has happened. It its stock, rooted. Happened while I was paying music in the car. My other phones with custom roms used to do it all the time.
I wonder if this has happened to anyone without ANY mods on their phone? =X

Reviving old thread... I have a completely stock S2X running 4.0.3 and it randomly reboots or shuts itself off.
I'm trying to figure out if it's a wayward app or a hardware problem. Thinking of rooting and removing the bloatware.
I also saw that it could be a faulty power button, but it also happens by itself, sitting on a desk.

[Q] Captivate sometimes doesn't fully turn on

Hi all,
I have a fairly frequent issue with my Glide Captivate. Unfortunately too frequently, when I turn it on, the network is disabled (O with slash through it), most widgets say "Loading Widget..." the slide down status menu shows nothing (well except the Wifi / BT / GPS toggles.) and "USB Connected" if it is. Nothing else. The phone gets incredibly hot, and near as I can tell sucks the battery. The screen often won't unlock - it will just light up the 4 soft buttons on the bottom (menu, home, etc). When I CAN get on it, I get frequent "Sorry! Process system is not respoding"
Attempting to go through System / Manage Applications - usually about a minute in the screen will blank for a minute then go back to the lock screen.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hey i had the same issue for months with my glide. I bought it outright from rogers and was just running it stock. Drove me nuts exchanged the phone 3 times. Finally narrowed it down to the media scanner/sd card issue. The scanner would run a few times and then reboot the phone. I tried booting it without the sd card in and booted up fine. Tried a dew diff sd cards and seem to have found one that works, but it would happen once every few weeks for me. Ive looked it up on the forums its that common problem with samsung phones. Pain in the butt. Cant remember if you said you were rooted id recommend trying that im too chicken myself. Happens on my sgs2 also.

I have also this issue once in a while, its very annoying, I think that if we could have a AOSP rom that would fix it since samsung polluted their rom so much. Maybe if we get lucky, with the ICS/JB update that issue will be gone. I have also another issue, the phone randomly turns "off" and becomes really hot, it depends on how long it takes for me to realize, but most of the time, it has drained my battery to near death. I don't think those are hardware related issues, but more on the software side since its not AOSP.
Does the temperature rise when it's charging? Because that happens to my phone too. If you have the voltage control, try lowering the max cpu use to lower the temperature a little bit.

Random sluggish performance that requires reboot?

Hello everyone. I've been experiencing a problem lately that has me scratching my head. The phone for no reason and at random times because super sluggish like the frame rate or something is super low.. It seems to be most apparent in the launcher.. It happens at random even if the phone is cool or hot. Happens on touchwiz launcher as well as nova launcher.. Clearing ram and open apps doesn't work... The only thing that makes the phone go back to normal is a reboot. This also happens on any custom ROM. With stock or custom kernel.. So.is this a CPU hardware problem? Has anyone else had this happen? It's already been happening quite often and its becoming annoying. Factory resets don't solve it either as it comes back randomly. If anyone can shed some light please do.

Explain to tmobile what's happening and let them know you want a new device. they are very easy to work with and tmobile won't make you prove anything. Ive been with tmobile for ten years now. Trust me they are easy to work with if you explain the situation and let them know it clearly interferes with your ability to use the device as it should be used. You should have ZERO problems with returning the device. By the way sounds like your device DOES have serious problems so id call tmobile as soon as possible. They MIGHT try trouble shooting it FIRST as this is procedure they HAVE to follow simply let them know after trouble shooting that your issue IS STILL PRESENT and they will exchange your device for a new one without issue...so call them asap. You won't have any trouble. You will see. They are very EASY to work with so NO WORRIES. Call and get your device exchanged NOW. Hope this helps you out. I've had a LOT of expirence working with tmobile. It won't be a problem. Youll see. Best wishes to you and hope you get this matter resolved today.

I'll have to agree here. I've had many issues over the years (anyone remember the LG G2X?), and they will stand by you. Sometimes you have to squawk loudly, but they want you to be happy...
Unlike Sprint.....I hate Sprint
Edit: If you're not happy with their response, just escalate it to Customer retention...they have the real power.
I had bad lag when I was trying to text, send an email, or anything involving using the keyboard. I flashed a ROM thinking that would take care of the issue . It didnt, still had hang ups and lag. I flashed back to stock and received a new phone and havent had an issue yet.

LG G3 rebooting every few minutes

I've had my G3 for over a month now without many issues, however yesterday evening my phone randomly rebooted itself, and ever since reboots every few minutes, often when I unlock my phone or shortly after. I have booted in to safe mode, and reflashed both the latest i and j firmware updates but no success.
Any ideas or anything I can try to dig in to the issue further?
By any chance did you enable ART runtime in settings? Otherwise maybe you have a corrupt sdcard.
Did you try booting into recovery to delete the cache? All else fails, you might need to factory reset.

Its probably due to either overheating or you messed with something in the build.prop.
First is your phone rooted? If it is then did you do anything system-wise? (Xposed framework or edit the build.prop or attempt to "flash" something)?

Thanks, unfortunately I'm still on Dalvik, and have removed my sdcard to try and remove another piece from the puzzle. I've factory reset and also flashed both an i and a j kdz using LGFlashTool2014.
Is it worth me following the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475045 or is the LGFlashTool2014 the same thing?

I've had Xposed installed with a few modules since I first had the phone, and hadn't added any new modules recently, although I guess possibly one of them may have updated. I've since done a factory reset and flashed however so can no longer check. Would I be right to assume the re-flash would have put everything back in a stock state?

I can't find anything online but I wonder if the phone is thinking it is overheating and therefore restarting? The device feels cold to the touch so I don't think it is actually overheating
Sounds like one of the chips is overheating. Maybe not be seating with the heatsink or whatever is supposed to help it keep cool. Ide take it back and get a replacement.

Interesting development, I flashed the Deviant CM11 AOSP rom on to it (using Tethered TWRP) and whilst it couldn't do much it lasted a whole day without rebooting. Unfortunately flashing the stock firmware or any other kdz back to the device causes the rebooting again. I'm still suspecting it could be a thermal issue, the phone wasn't exactly being stressed on Deviant.
