[Q] Grey wifi bars after waking device from standby... Help! - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So my Nexus 7 2013 and my wife's Nexus 7 2013 have this issue where after a prolonged (hours) sleep, when I wake them up, the wifi bars are grey, not blue. That means no Internet.
This happens on the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz network, connected to my 2013 Apple Time Capsule.
I've found a way to get by it, by turning off "Wi-Fi Optimization" in the advanced Wi-Fi settings. But I'm not sure the effect this has on battery life.
I tried setting static IPs to each Nexus 7, but that made no difference.
So, is there a reason why, out of the box, these devices won't reconnect to wifi? Thanks, guys!

May be wrong but I thought blue means you are connected to the Google servers. Pretty sure internet should work even if grey.

are u sure you don't have the setting for "turn off wifi when in deep sleep" checked in wifi advanced settings?

I read that somewhere. Not true in my case. Internet doesn't work.

"Keep WiFi on when asleep" was set to "Always." I've now turned that to "Never" to see if it makes a difference.
So right now I've got "WiFi Optimization" set to "OFF", and "Keep WiFi on when asleep" set to "Never." We'll see if that works. In theory it should since it will be forced to make a new connection when I wake it up, but I'll give it a bit and see what happens...

So using the above settings have not only increased my standby battery life hugely, but also solved the grey wifi bar issue. Yay!

[SOLVED] WiFi not working properly? 3G/4G stays on due "My Account" App

So when i am home i have my WiFi on, which means my 4g is off. Now when the WiFi is on, i can not receive or send pictures. Also cant use the web or do anything like that but just send and receive text/calls.. and reason to this? maybe i have certain settings on that i don't know about? If i remember right, my wifi worked properly a few days ago.. but i cant remember exaclty. Help please? Thanks
no one knows?
Power cycle your router?
I've been having a different wifi issue. at home I have only edge coverage but I have petty good cable internet so obviously I want to use my wifi but for some reason the phone connects to wifi yet still uses the mobile network unless I turn off mobile data. My wifi sleep policy is set to never btw. Any ideas?

Edit
Also if I turn off mobile data while connected to wifi then turn it on while still connected it stays on wifi fine. Its like the mobile radio is preventing the wifi connection from fully initializing or something
Same issue!

I am having the same issue. I have to go into airplane mode, then turn on wifi to actually be able to use it... otherwise seems to default to mobile radio...
I have the same issue..this is what i do to work around it though:
1. Go to Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Networks
2. Uncheck packet data, and then check it again.
Once i do this, my wifi works again, let me know if it works for you.

Got this from the battery thread. This actually fixes the wifi issue on my SG2
The program is called Llama and can be downloaded from the market. I deleted all the default events and just added these 2. Hope this helps for all of you with this issue.

Try freezing "my account". It toggles data even with WiFi is on. Try it and let me know.

Actually saw this tread and had Llama installed with these 2 profiles added and was till getting this issue... Going to try Freezing My Account to see if that helps... I know it helped with my wifi issues on my G2x.
Update: Nothing seems to work now. Can't have Wifi and cell radio on at the same time... can get calls but nothing else...
I've seen it occasionally as well. I haven't needed to reboot though. It usually recovers after I toggle WiFi on and off and mess with some other things.

Yes, either return or warranty exchange for a new one, I have not noticed this issue with my device at all.
I've been having the same issue and it definitely causes excessive battery drain. Sometimes toggling wifi off then on works. Other times it requires toggling mobile data off then on.
I had it happen just now and tried freezing 'my account' in titanium backup as suggested and my 4g indicator immediately turned off. Sweet! It seems that 'my account' is the culprit!
Edit: I really wish this topic wasn't merged...I think there were a couple 'wifi problem' threads talking about different issues. To clarify, my problem was that while on wifi my 4G indicator would sometimes turn on and consume more battery and (sometimes) force all data to use 4G instead of wifi. Really annoying!

Hi all, Im having a problem that is slowly driving me insane for the past 2 weeks. I surely cant be the only one. Anyway, I generally move between home and work daily, both have WIFI. When Im at home Im connected, all fine. I travel to work, WIFI isnt connected, again this is normal. I get into work and when I expect it be connected to WIFI it isnt, WIFI is off and I have to manually turn it back on to get it connected to WIFI again. Why do I have to do this? Why have all my other Android devices just worked normally and reconnect to known networks. Its soooo frustrating
Anyone have same problem or have a resolution?

I have posted this in other people's threads in regards to poor wifi reception. I recently purchased a 9250 through bell canada and have the same problem.
I have turned off the 'avoid poor connections' as well. It turns on and off on its own and can't get through a download of more then 5MB on wifi.
It will also reconnect on its own if I have left wifi turned on. I would say while WIFI is turned on I may actually be connected 30% of the time. This is 90% in 2 feet away from a router.
I'm having the same issue (wifi turning itself off) - noticed it the other day and just assume I'd caught the wi-fi button (I use extended controls). Happened again this morning and also just now as I got home.
I've not modded anything on my Nexus (4.0.1) - avoid poor connections has been disabled for a while.
I may test the theory, but betweek home and work is a wifi enabled bus journey, I never use it but it always tells me there's a wifi available. I might turn wifi notification off and see it if turns itself off before I get to work in the morning...
Left home with wifi on... Got to work and wifi was off? Wtf?
Could it be extended controls?

You are not the only one, it's happening to me in exactly the same scenario. Oddly enough it hasn't happened today.
i cant make out of your post thast the wifi on/off button turns of? or just the connection to the wifi adres?
i dont know about any sleep or auto turn of policy's as i didnt try it(i always turn off my wifi when travling)
but if its the last thing.
than the problem might not even be the GN.?
but the router it self.
even computer's and laptopt can have problems when the password is too long,or to different(hard characters like :';/.m,[email protected]#$%^&**(() ][ )
it might also be the MHZ setting,as the 20MHZ has wider range but can be disorted by machines like microwaves.
but the 40MHZ has lower range but wouldnt be disorted.
as there is also the channel option thats has been set wrong/or the pasword encryption. or any other router conflicting with the router you want to connect.
it might also be the router not liking your GN.(as my spica doesnt conect to my router at home, but all my other devices do.my router doesnt want to give a IP to my spica.)
It just happened to me again now, left the office whilst wifi was on and connected. Grabbed some lunch and returned (about 20 mins) and now my wifi button is set to off and I need to set it back to on.

Can't see any policy settings or any power save features. Running stock.
somehow I have fixed it. Problem is I don't know how.
Here is what I did in case anyone else needs help;
*From the 'My Vodafone' app, select wi-fi finder, in settings untick 'Enable BT Openzone'
*Settings, wi-fi, advanced, untick 'Network Notification', untick 'Avoid poor connections'
Not sure which of the above actually fixes it but my Wi-Fi has been on for about 1 1/2 days now.
Have you or when did you upgrade to 4.0.2? As the changelog mentions a wifi fixed. Only upgraded this morning so won't see if it has worked until I get home...

So I am still having this problem since day one. I have travelled through 3 countries and multiple cities and tried to use WIFI in at least 20+ different instances and the problem is the same.
It connects right away (really quickly actually) will stay connected for a bit then eventually loses connection.
I can't download any of the big packages for the games and so I can't play them. I won't use my data connection for anything over 100mb.
I got a message for an update yesterday. Updated the phone but I see no difference in the Android version number.
Anything happening with this?
I thought the update i was downloading was 4.0.2 but i guess it wasn't.
I am familar with updating and flashing from the galaxy s. But I want to use the phone completely stock for while.
I have just returned my nexus for a replacement. Lets see how it goes.
So far I have had the power shut off once while toggling the wifi widget (never happened on my other phone). And the wifi has disconnected twice. I have just done the update (not 4.0.2) and it seems to work a little better.
Called samsung yesterday after getting the replacement phone when it had the same issue (just as a reminder I have tried it on numerous routers/ap's) and they said they hadn't heard of the issue.
I said I was just calling to provide some feedback. They told me to return the phone yet again. I obviously believe I don't have a problem with the hardware at all. I figured if store let me return it, then why not.
Anyway onto my 3rd one today and the exact same problem.
I think that even though I am turning off "Avoid Poor Connections" it isn't actually turning that 'feature' off. Every so often and only if your watching the wifi settings it will say that it disconnected the wifi connection due to low signal.
Mind you all of this is 1' from my router while sitting at my computer. My galaxy S is sitting beside me and has maintained a wireless link to the router the entire time.

Yes,I noticed it with mine too..but i think it will still use Wi-fi network when you browse(i tested it with speedtest app,it used Wi-fi)
It seemed to keep saying couldnt connect wifi using mobile data on Att messaging app, it didnt seem to be using the data connection for anything else and was only sending/receiving on wifi

I noticed mine seeming to drop from wifi when the screen is off for a while, even though I have it set to leave wifi always on.
When I would turn the screen on, it would show LTE, then LTE and wifi, then just wifi and give me the message that it connected to wifi. I also noticed the icon for the preloaded AT&T Smart Wi-fi. My assumption is that this app is causing me to drop from wifi when it shouldn't be.
I disabled AT&T Smart Wi-Fi and haven't had the problem so far today.
Jrockttu, thanks for your suggestion, it was driving me nuts. I've just picked up my Note II yesterday and UNFORTUNATELY I enabled the AT&T Smart WiFi app (and then forgot about it, of course). After that I couldn't stay connected to WiFi, the WiFi radio kept cycling on and off, it was maddening. Luckily I found this post, and after disabling the stupid app, now I can stay connected to WiFi.

[Q] WIFI won't turn off during sleep, even with the setting

Hello, I seem to be having serious battery drain with WIFI. I know this because when it is off I don't lose nearly as much battery. I think the reason is WIFI is staying on, even in sleep mode overnight or during the day. I changed the setting "Keep wifi on during sleep" to "Never" and yet that does nothing and my wifi remains on.
Any tips on how to fix this? Is this a known issue in Jelly Bean?
Is your sprint connection optimizoeron... you can check by going to settings. More settings. wireless networks. Mobile networks and finally sprint conniction optimozor. If box is checked you have to turn it off.

I'm going to go on a limb and say he has it off. My wifi never sleep no matter what setting I have it on under advanced settings. The wifi sleep policy is hit or miss on Samsung's. Some people can't get their wifi to sleep no matter what setting they choose while some have the issue where it sleeps and never comes back on till you toggle off and on. Then you have those whose wifi works perfectly fine with either option. It's the same behavior as my E4GT.

Wifi after sleep?

I have a question. I have "keep WIFI on during sleep" option set to "Never".
When I wake up my phone from sleep after 30 minutes or more of not using it, the wifi does not reactivate itself (it's off, no icon in statusbar), but when I go to settings, it says that Wifi is enabled. Just like in the picture below...
I want to know if this is normal or what? Happens to me on both stock and custom rom.
EDIT :

I have had the WiFi Frequency Band set to Automatic since I got the HTC 10. I came looking for this topic because of what mine does. When I wake up the screen, there is often a message on the screen "wifi has disconnected", and it will show connected to mobile data in the notification bar. It usually will reconnect to WiFi within a few seconds. But it is annoying, so I am looking for a fix, if there is one. I turned on the setting to keep it on WiFi during sleep a couple days ago, but it didn't change this behavior.
From what I am reading here, this sounds like it is common to the HTC 10 regardless of that setting. I am therefore thinking perhaps the "wifi has disconnected" message is actually left over and still on the display from when I turned the display off? But what I don't understand is that I get notifications such as incoming email and hangouts messages while the display is still sleeping. Unless those are coming via the mobile data connection. Perhaps I should try turning off mobile data and leaving wifi on to test if it still does that, but obviously leaving the mobile radio connection off is not desireable, even if that did help. Does the HTC 10 silently always switch to a mobile connection and turn off wifi whenever the screen is off, meaning that keep wifi on setting is flawed?

Thank you for replying. The only 3 boxes I have checked in WiFi > Advanced are as follows:
WiFi Notification
Show Wi-Fi pop-up
Hotspot sign-in
All the other check boxes are blank.
So I have similar problem. When I leave the house it switches to mobile network just fine. When I come back home it doesn't auto connect until I turn on the screen. My advanced wifi settings are below with basically nothing checked.
I agree this is a serious problem and for me I have no mobile network at home and depend on wifi and hangouts for voice calls.
Just curious what firmware is everyone on? Mine is 1.91.617.1.
This thread discusses it quite a bit, mentioning different settings changes to try.

I tried some of these changes, and things seemed better today for awhile, until I found out my phone actually wasn't getting the internet over the solid WiFi connection to my network. :/ I had to undo all the changes so I could get back online with it.
