ok i'm in.
For future reference, holding all 3 hardware keys did nothing.
What worked was holding power, then once the Google logo pops up, continue holding power and also hold volume down.
Now to download a rom or system.img....
Edit:
This system.img worked : https://mega.co.nz/#!PBIiEbBJ!bKpdHxegOVlde12nsu_ulEyRq7UsANLLQab1IZjLIGc

If you are not good with timing your button presses, you can just press Power+VolDown the whole time until it goes into the bootloader.

That wasn't working for me, dunno why, the only thing that worked was in post #2, scared the crap out of me lol
Most important thing is that you got it going again!! Just be careful with whatever you flash/modify in the future! If it does mess up in the future, at least now you know what to do. I guess that's the positive way of looking at it, this was just a good (even though scary) learning experience!!

Haha thanks, no idea why I got the 0mb data partition like some of the others who deleted system or used the twrp inbuilt supersu. But now that I'm rooted, its nearly unbrickable now, won't forget this though

I have to say, it would be nice that someone write an updated and more concise tutorial on root/unlock phones. I came here, looked easy enough with the gui tool but then lo and behold I ran into an issue with not even a word in the tutorial. You know where you go to unlock phone and you need to press vol up/down and power well there were multiple choices depending on how you pressed those buttons. Nowhere did it mention what exactly do you choose then if that was not enough my drivers which I thought were installed all of a sudden crapped out and I was just left there with a oh oh wtf do I do feeling. I yanked the battery since I couldn't get out of that vol up/down screen on my phone. Cancelling the wizard on the gui did jack all either. Thankfully it didn't F'up my phone. I am just a little paranoid now of doing anything to this phone. Then today I look around the forums some more and I find a thread about how my radio might be messed up after rooting it.
Again, nice to have the tutorials but it would be nice to have someone write a proper tutorial and not cut corners. Lets not forget some of us, like me, had a piece of crap Blackberry and Android is all new to me. What you might consider an afterthought is probably a stumbling block for someone like me.
Honestly, wish I knew someone who could do it for me. This stuff is not for the feint of heart.
Try the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit ! Its really easy ! Its a step by step tutorial
Download--extract--start the program
connect the mobile via USB (must be in fastbootmode)everything else is easy explained/step by step
Hardest part is downloading the Samsung drivers. Really.
For me it wasnt neccessary to install them ! If you have the ToolKit its really easy ! Everything you need ist to start the program und click 4 times a button
Lol dude really, i'm going with user error. Please try a toolkit or go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400871, use post 3 if you don't want to use the toolkit. I followed these steps and had my phone unlocked in no more than 15 minutes. I don't even have ADB installed on my PC. It was extremely simple to follow these instructions. So take some time, read the steps carefully and you should be good to go.
guys I followed this tutorial...
theunlockr.com (sorry i can't post links)
As I said, he didn't explain what to do with vol up/down button, what to expect etc. It's at this point too that the driver went crazy and turned to exclamation point and I was stuck in the vol/up/down screen.
I agree, drivers are difficult. When I thought I had it and it was listing my serial number etc I thought I was good to go, up and until the vol up/down power button thing.
P.S. The restrictions on this site are a little overboard no?!? and that image verify, i have to click it a million times before i can even interpret what it says. lol.
How can it be user error when the tutorial I followed that was linked from this site didn't explain what to expect? I've been reading sites for the past week bud just to build the confidence to unlock/root my phone and despite god knows how many hours I ran into problems. I'm happy as heck for you that you did it in 15mins.
Please.. tell me this is user error...
"2. Now, click Unlock under Unlock + Root and wait for your device to prompt you. When it does, select Yes using the volume buttons and wait for it to reboot."
prompt me? ya...
Hey I don't make the instructions, I just follow them. If this is the set of the instructions you are refering to http://theunlockr.com/2012/01/26/ho...-nexus-one-click-method-lte-and-gsm-versions/, are you 100% sure you installed the drivers correctly? That is probably your issue.

I thought I had and I thought things were working but again, when it came to part where to confirm on my phone using vol/up/down pwr I saw device manager then seemingly re-install driver and then in bubble said driver failed. I was then stuck with the vol up/down on my phone.
If I am brave I might give it another go tonight.
I'm not understanding the issue.. if the device didn't prompt you then something went wrong and you should start over..?
When you hold the volume buttons and the power button while booting up it puts you in boot loader mode. You don't have to do anything from here.
Rooting will not **** up your radio either. Whomever said that is stupid.

Pressing the vol/up/down pwr gave me more than one option.. restart/fastboot etc...can't remember, there was like 3 or 4 options.
This phone has been by far the easiest phone to unlook\root. I'm chalking it up as user error as well. I always read, re-read, and for good measure re-read once more before I even think about trying to do anything to the phone.

Guys. Shut up with the user error. The OP has stated they came from a blackberry and have probably never seen the boot loader on a phone. It is understandable.
Even if it is user error it isn't necessary for ten people to say it is.
OP, when you hold volume up/down + power it says like reboot, reboot boot loader, and something else, correct? With an android on the screen?

To unlock the bootloader you need to stay at the bootloader. Where it gives you the three options I do believe are Reboot, Bootloader, and recovery. When at that screen to unlock the bootloader all you type in cmd is fastboot oem unlock and then look to your phone to read the warning and continue with your choice.

thanks for support joshnichols189. The user error was getting on my nerves actually. I won't say it isn't user error but I've been with a lousy Blackberry for years. Cut me some slack guys. Android is new to me. I couldn't do jack all with my BB. Love my android so far.. I'm just really afraid to make mistake and brick my phone.
I believe you are right about the options there joshnichols189. It was stuck there when I saw drivers issue in device manager. I was kinda in panic mode.
I didn't know in cmd prompt you can to type in cmd is fastboot oem unlock, I don't recall that being said in tutorial.. I think it was more like the cmd prompt was saying press any key when ready.. then poof my nexus went to that screen.
I'll give it another go tonight and see what happens.

Yep. It opens a cmd prompt window (can't remember but) it then ends with some press any key when you are ready then it goes to phone.. depending on how you hit the vol/up/down gives you a few options.
The command times infinity gave you was for if you were unlocking it the manual way. I don't have my nexus anymore or I would do the steps with you but I believe when you hold volume up/down+ power it will put you on the screen you need to be on. At this point it gives you the options to reboot, reboot recovery and reboot boot loader. You don't have to choose any of these because oddly enough you are already in the boot loader. From here ONLY if your drivers are installed correctly should you push unlock on the toolkit. Then when the cmd window opens follow what it says and eventually the phone will prompt you. From there choose yes or whatever it may be on the phone.

CDMA GALAXY NEXUS> Hey guys, I was running Romanbb's 4.0.4 build earlier today. I clicked on a video (which may or may not have been on a porn site) all of a sudden my screen went all wacky. Where it was kind of fuzzy and running diagnal across the screen. I could only see part of it. I thought I might have gotten a virus or something because i have never had one of my devices do this before. So I immideatly rebooted the phone into recovery and wiped eveything including formatting system. I went to flash a nandroid I had of black ice and in the middle of flashing that my phone rebooted itself and stayed there (bootlooping at the google logo) I can get into fastboot and I can get into recovery about one out of every ten times but I cant do anything in recovery because the phone turns itself off insted of booting recovery most of the time (I have clockwork touch) When I do get into recovery without it turning off it reboots if I try to flash anything. It seems to be stable in fastboot (thank god!) but When I get it connected in Wugs Root tool kit and try to flash the stock image it goes through the motions and says FAILED on every step exept the first (which I believe is checking radio). It says ( error too many links) on the first two) and I cant remember the error on the last four but I have tried it a couple times so I can replicate it if needed. Can anyone tell me what to do from here? I really appreciate in advance!!! If this is a hardware error then I would like to get it back to stock to get it replaced. It is weird that it happened while running a rom. Its not like I messed up while flashing or anything.
ADB will recognize it in Fastboot. I already set all of that up when I rooted. when I try to flash the stock+unroot option on wugfresh's toolbox it errors out on every step like there is something wrong with my internal sd on my phone? Im wondering if I should try odin. IDK? Im hoping somebody who has seen this or had this happen before will save the day and tell me what to do.
lol why did you rush into CWM and start wiping things? you should have let it reboot and it probably could have been a one off..
you can try this http://rootzwiki.com/topic/14145-od...actory-odin-restore-402-with-radios-unrooted/
It is stable in fastboot but in cwr it is still geeking out
It still is glitching in cwr. most of the time it either turns off or reboots when I try to go into cwr. i can wipe but if I flash anything it freezes at the point where it starts writing to storage. I have never seen anything like this before.
I have now tried oden as well
It looks like it is a problem with the hardware. The phone is only a couple months old if that. So I really wish I could flash the stock image or at least get rid of cwm. but that is not looking likely. Here are a couple pics of odin showing the problem. Any guidace would be much appreciated. This SUCKS
Why in the heck are you trying to use Odin?
I can only get into fastboot and odin.
CWM wont let me do anything. it crashes and reboots into a bootloop if I try to flash anything. The poster above suggested odin. I dont know what else to do. Please help if you can!
Can you get a screencap of when it fails fastbooting the stock images?
yes
yes, give me couple min and I will post it. Thank you!
I guess I cant. This is all I get now

How are you attempting to access fastboot?
Vol + and Vol - and power all at the same time
Vol + and Vol - and power all at the same time from powered off
And oden was Vol - and power at the same time from powered off
Now no matter what I push it goes to the screen with the yellow triangle.
That screen says you (now) have a corrupt partition.
At this point, you must use Odin, which is unfortunate. What URL did you use to download the image? The current image in that thread was on multiupload.

during my rooting attempt I had a problem with the two vol buttons. It was quite frustrating. Keep trying them and try pressing the power button a fraction of a second sooner.
I downloaded the one later in the thread

I used that thread because it is the one that the second post linked for me.

I pm'd you to ask how you could fix it. Just wondering if I could do it. I can follow instructions well. I have never had a problem and have been flashing stuff for a year or so. IDK what happened here.
I can't help but I wanted to share that I had a similar experience. I was bonne stock and clicked on a you tube video and my phone immediately shut down and tried to reboot itself, but only would boot loop. I had to manually reformat my partitions to recover. Sounds like your case might be even worse. Still don't know what my problem was.

Thanks. Any feedback is appreciated.
so you can't get into bootloader or odin screen any more? if so try using a Jig it works to get the phone into odin mode for me. i used the same usb jig i made for the captivate.
I got the same suggestion from someone else. I have to wait until radio shack opens in the morning and I will give it a shot. Otherwise, I went by verizon and they are having samsung send me a replacment. I would much rather keep this one if I can though
I tried flashing the stock image from fastboot and it failed though when I could get there, and I also tried flashing the stock image through oden when I could get there and both failed multiple times so I don't have much hope. I think something broke.
I am headed to radio shack now. Be back soon with a answer as to wheather I can save my baby or not.
First off, I only made a new thread because i couldn't find one with the same problem I am having....super bricked i think...
Trying to go from the unofficial CWM 9 back to ICS to go back to HoneyComb!
Anyways, did ICS update.zip through clockwork recovery. Now only boots to nothing. nothing at all! Just a black screen and the home key is lit.
So I have no ADB or Fastboot, but i do have nvflash working....but i can't seem to get it to do anything without losing its connectivity with the computer! so now what???
can anyone help?
Thanks!
EDIT:
Actually this guy had the same problem --->

100% Stock, Stuck at "X" Logo on boot. "Dead Android" w/ Exclamation (!) in Recovery
Can someone please help me, PLEASE!!
I just want to be able to download the data from my phone, I don't care about getting android working again right now, I just want to download my photos and videos from the phone. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus that's completely stock, including locked bootloader. I tried using the toolkit and I am able to have it see the device while it's in fastboot but I can't do any of the functions because it wants to unlock my bootloader which will erase all my data! I was just swapping the battery on my phone when this happened. I wasn't trying to do anything special, it was just supposed to be a normal boot up but it just got stuck on the "X". I'm running 4.1.1. My stock recovery shows a photo of a dead android and an exclamation point. It looks like this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jF4CgOU8c...ASKg/m6YOuDRcs4g/s1600/AndroidRedTriangle.JPG
Can someone please help me? I will seriously send you a paypal for your time, just please help me the data from my phone. I am somewhat savvy, like I said...I am in fastboot, my drivers are installed, and the toolkit can recognize my phone without any issue.
Thank you soooo sooo much in advance!
Why don't you just boot into stock recovery and just wipe cache. Maybe some rogue app is preventing your boot up.
You will not lose any data by only wiping cache.

Don't fear....
Even if you unlock your boot loader your data is not actually gone. But let's cross that bridge if we get there.
First things first: take your battery out, take your sim card out, put your sim card in and put your battery in. Boot up the phone.
If that doesn't fix you then the next thing to do is try safe mode. Power off the phone. Then, press the power button and BOTH (yes both) the volume up AND the volume down buttons. Hold them until the phone boots up.
If that doesn't work write back. Don't worry though. Your data is safe.

First, thank you so much for replying.
I should have been more clear in my original message, I took my battery out and sim card in and out over 10 times and I even let the phone sit there for 30 minutes while it was at the X animation to no avail.
I have now also attempted a safe mode boot 4 times with no luck. During my safe mode boot attempts, the phone vibrated a few times but the display just remained at the X animation. It even did it after I let go of the volume key. I'm not sure what to make of this but I attempted it twice with holding both volume keys down as soon as the "google" logo appeared and twice with just the volume down key as soon as the "google" logo appeared. Same thing all 4 times, just sits at the X animation.
What would you recommend as a next step to recover the data? I really only care about the DCIM folder, nothing else matters that much.

When you see this, press power+ vol up to get to the stock recovery menu. There is a wipe cache option there. It may take you a few tries to press both buttons at exactly the same time, but keep trying. No need to reboot in between tries.

Thank you for your reply. I was able to get there and I formatted my cache. After that completed I chose the option to reboot the phone. I didn't do anything special during that reboot like trying to hold the volume down button as well for safe mode, I just let it go. I think you need to get into fastboot, unlock the bootloader (if it isn't already) and put a clean factory image on. You'll lose your data when you unlock, but there is a thread in this forum on recovering that information. If you're already unlocked, just flash the boot and system images individually - it may clean up whatever is corrupt.

I tried this, it recovered only 36 files out of a 28 GB data file, and the files it did recover were all just files that have been on the phone since I unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and flashed a stock OS so I could boot up and do all this. Frankly it seems like the files recovered were all the ones that were on the phone since I flashed a rom, none of my previous data are there. I followed the instructions to a T. Am I doing something wrong? Is the recovery software limiting me somehow because I am not using the paid version?
You have been so kind and helpful thus far, please assist me in figuring out what else I can do.

It's legit.
Figured out it's easier to download from dropbox as compared to rapidshare.

No matter how many darn times I try or how many different recovery software suites out there I try, I am getting nothing back. This is so disappointing. Can anyone please recommend something to me? A better data recovery solution? A better way to extract the data from the phone? Anything. I am desperate. I am contemplating going to a legit data recovery center and paying the $500 cause I don't know what to do anymore but I don't even know if they'll be able to do anything.

Which phone are you using? Make sure you are pulling from the correct partition for the userdata of your phone.

I think you need to get into fastboot, unlock the bootloader (if it isn't already) and put a clean factory image on...

Not sure of the need to flash a new image. May do more harm than good....

You could have just transferred files using adb and then a factory reset on your phone with the recovery.
the whole process went through fine. then at the end it says your device will take 5-10 minutes to reboot. its been 20 minutes and im still stuck at the recovery screen (whatever the screen is called where the droid's stomach is open)
i tried booting into the phone and i can but im still not stock so this obviously isn't working for whatever reason.
any thoughts?
I don't know but the toolkit forum would be the place to ask or read the FAQ on the toolkit.
Next time, don't use a toolkit. Use fastboot.

I'm continually amazed that so many people will literally waste more time trying to get a toolkit to work than it would take for them to learn how to use adb/fastboot, and punch in the commands.
I looked at a toolkit once to see what all the hubub was about. It took longer to read the options on screen than it did to learn all adb commands.

Chances I messed something up? Where do I go from here? Uninstall drivers?
Need some hand holding because I really need it back to stock by weekend end

we dont know, you used a toolkit. it tells you nothing really.
learn fastboot, there is a thread about the whole return to stock with detailed instructions.
If you can, get into the stock recovery and wipe cache and data. I've gotten stuck at the Google screen once before when I relocked and flashed stock images. Oh and the three posts above are all correct, this is a Nexus, no need for tool kits.
Did system gave you error or something when flashin....i dont know, it is a toolkit!
Did you flash userdata....i dont know, it is a toolkit!
........................ !
any way boot into recovery and wipe data and cache, reboot
How can i put my Gnex in fastboot/recovery mode?
Turn off your phone, press and hold down Volume Up and Down keys + Power button at the same time until fastboot (bootloader) mode (image of an Android with Start) appears then release the keys. Press volume up or down and select recovery by pressing power button. (For stock recovery, when you see an android logo with exclamation mark, press power + volume up to see the recovery menu).

if it didnt work, flash stock images manually with fastboot commands
