Format data wipes out EVERYTHING. You shouldn't really need to do that. Which custom ROM are you yon? Maybe try asking around in that thread.
Well i asked in the cm10 and the slimbean rom cause it happened on both like all i did was reboot and i lost data from my apps and settings? This doesnt happen when im on stock

Try going into recovery, wipe cache/dalvik and fix permissions.

I would not restore app data or especially system apps and data from another device. Restoring just apps without data should be fine - I've done it before. You might need to do a factory reset and reflash the ROM to start over again.

Factory reset (or unlock/relock bootloader). Since there are no separate partitions, it will delete everything iirc.
Iv installed the aokp rom after coming from arhd and power amp and double twist don't work which is a major bug
I used this super wipe zip when i flashed arhd and not sure if this is the issue as no1 else seems to have this problem
Power amp just opens then closes and runs a scan in the background which just loops and can't do anything so easiest thing for me is to start from scratch

If you want to go back to stock it should be sufficient to delete all caches from recovery and flash the Galaxy Nexus ICS stock image provided by Google.
Nah I want the aokp rom, its soo good but if power amp doesn't work then its a noo noo
So thought if I wipe it and start fresh all will be good

I would also like to know. I flashed arhd and want to format the entire device but keep root/arhd. Is it just a matter of factory reset and wipe dalvik cache?

Factory Reset, while having the bootloader unlocked and while using AOKP, did not delete the contents of my galaxy nexus's SD CARD... WTF?
Unlocking the bootloader will surely erase everything.
If you want to use the 4.0.4 Gapps (which work 100% and include the new Camera and Browser) you will need to do a data wipe.
Here are the 4.0.4 Gapps.. These Gapps should work with any 4.0.3 ROM.. Although if you are installing them for the first time you will need to do a data wipe.. So while your at it and wiping data why not go ahead and try out the new GummyNex;-)
Enjoy
Files
4.0.4 Gapps 020512 - Requires a data wipe if this is the first time you are installing these

Wiping data then flashing gapps causes bootloops. Had to battery pull and flash nandroid. AOKP & faux's #12.

I think he means you have to wipe then install rom then install gapps. Like you normally would when flashing.

Can you tell us why we must wipe data? I'm just curious. Are there certain folders we can wipe to not have to do a whole device re-do?

Simple why: Because some apps will be unstable if you don't.
Real reason why: Some apps probably changed their data format a bit, making them incompatible with data from the older version.
In theory, you can go into app management and delete data for these apps, but there are almost 40 of them in this update. Sounds a bit dangerous.

Any chance we could get a list? Or better yet a CWM flash-able zip that wipes the data on those apps
There's no guarentee that would even work, better (safer) to just tibu and flash the rom you're currently on imho if you want nothing to change.
You def need to wipe, I tried for the hell of it without wiping just flashed a rom and cleared dalvik and cache. Nothing worked from Google except maps, so ima wipe later and do it right. Maybe even the blue will come back to my signal and 3g and 4g instead of being grey all the time.

So i can confirm if anyone is having the problem with the signal bars and 3g/4g staying grey not turning blue, wiping data and flashing 4.0.4 gapps as fresh install brings it back to normal.
What are the changes in the apps? I can't even see the difference lol

I've run into a situation where my gn2 will not start an app when I tap on an app icon. Instead it just returns to the home screen. If I reboot it goes away for awhile. I've tried clearing the cache and the davlik cache, but it still happens. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for responding! I'm using the stock JB (with the recent update to 4.1.2). I'm rooted and have team win recovery 2.3.3.1 installed using Goomanager.
Do a full wipe of the device, both system and data, and re-flash your ROM. Clear all caches again too.

Good suggestion. However it's not a particular app. It happens to all of them at once. When I reboot, it goes away (temporarily). I agree it may have started with a particular app, however I have no way (that I know) to figure out which one it is. I'm also only running apps I've used for a long time. Nothing really new which might have brought along some baggage.
My roms backups have been acting strangely. TWRP tells me it is a complete succesfull backup but when i go to restore the backup it does not restore all my apps data...
It is strange and has never done this before
Iv heard that this might do to that i tried to flash ubuntu toch OS on my phone..
Any ideas? please help?
I know that the latest TWRP allows you to pick what is backed up... Are all boxes checked?
Something I'm curious about, does Ubuntu touch store app data in the traditional location that other ROMs store it? I'm guessing based on your question that Ubuntu backups have worked in the past, yeah?

Reflash your recovery.
Its uncommon, but not unheard of, for recoveries to become corrupted, and that may be what happened to you

Are you just hitting Restore > restore rom, or are you doing something fancy like Restore > Restore /system only? And go into your backup folder and check for a file thats named something like "data.ext4" or similar. Either that, or post a screenshot of your TWRP backup folder for the ROM you are trying to restore, I'm not familiar with TWRP backups as I've never used TWRP myself.

I've noticed that if I restore a stock nandroid, the google apps and phone application don't restore properly, or at all. Somehow I suspect this has something to do with the various partitions that TWRP allows you to choose when backing up and restoring.
Can someone break this down for me? Why does a stock nandroid restore seem to be all sorts of screwed up?
Thanks!

Its because the size of the ROM itself, Sammy repartitioned the files and what used to be tombstones is now called preload, without the proper format the recovery can't properly restore the preload partition resulting in certain errors, there is a fix for it, go check out mohans embryo 7 ROM, he talks about the partition corruption and how to fix it

Yes, I've never had an issue restoring a stock based nandroid, even like infamous s2 Jedi, embryo, touchwiz based roms, never had an issue, some newer roms are the ones with issues, the ones based off the flawed leaked firmware...

Hmmmm, what about after running CM10.1? That and stock are basically the only two roms I run, and I always have issues on stock nandroid restores.
What you said about formatting partitions makes sense, so next time I'll flash a stock based rom before restoring a stock nandroid and see what happens.

Yes its different when jumping from twiz based and asop based roms, something about the preload partition causes little glitches in the flash process, therefor not loading that partition correctly, u can try making a data only backup, which will preserve the preload, so in effect the way I do it when restoring is restore only system and boot first, then data part I on separate after restoring system and boot
