How is LG with the dev community? - Sprint LG Optimus G

I am looking to upgrade to the Sprint LG G2, and the deciding factor is how LG handles the root/ROM community. My current phone is the OG Photon, which Motorola permalocked the bootloader, then canceled ICS. Even unlocked, Motorola had terrible driver support, where camcorders, 4G and more would break on custom ROMs. Being on Gingerbread yet sucks, as such I refuse to buy a phone that can't be unlocked(T-Mobile has horrible coverage in my area, or I'd have bought a Nexus 4 long ago). So I'd like to see the opinions of the OG, to see how support is, and to see how easy it is to unlock. I understand how stock Android functions, but I have a Nexus 10. I'm used to 'fastboot oem unlock' and pure AOSP support/factory images and such haha. Does LG release the stock ROMs or bootloaders or anything? Does LG even use stock fastboot? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to not get burned again(Motorola.....).

I actually looked here to make sure there was development for this phone before I purchased it, Optimus G running Vectus rom makes me smile each time I pick up my phone.

Its growing by the day! I just got this phone 1 month ago and there was an alright amount of ROMs. but now in the past month there was over 6 new ROMs!! Were getting up there.

I came from the DROID RAZR, and this phone feels like a beast compared to that. Granted, Verizons network was better but I left them on principal. I haven't rooted yet, but I will in 10 more days (return period). I don't believe I will flash a custom ROM right off the bat though because the stock ROM is plenty smooth and does what it's supposed to. That's so not like Motoblur. It was almost necessary to root and flash in order to have a decent user experience on the Motorola phones (I've had 3). I'm pleasantly surprised by this phone and its stock ROM though. If you pick this phone it won't be a mistake.

+1, I have had my phone about 2 months and since then it has gone from a handful of ROMs to 10+, I was even inspired to make my own ROM.

Soon its going to be like the s3 thread.

Lots of development going on! It really is sweet. When I first got here, there were only a few different choices. I had a ton of trouble getting my first builds together(and still do ), but the devs and users here were very knowledgible and helpful. It is one of the best forums I have had the pleasure of being a part of! And we're still rolling out more!.....

Don't play with my heart like that man, lol. I know for a fact that we'll get 4.3 eventually, as well as maybe an official LG update to..... Whatever it is that they're planning on shipping the G2 with (4.2.1 or 4.2.2?). We have a flagship phone with some high end specs. If we don't get an official update for our phones from LG, it'll be because of just outright neglect.
That's what AOSP is for though, I guess.

just traded a sprint gs3 for a sprint optimus g

i think it was a fair trade.
i first had a iphone 4s and swapped for a s3 swapped for a evo lte then swapped back for a gs3 and today swapped for a optimus g.
i might have the order a little screwed but either way if this phone gets a solid development group its definitely a keeper. For now

Welcome to the LGOG! Definately check out the Dev section, we have a few stock ROM's and a new one posted today that is going for almost full AOSP!
Welcome to the club.
Rumor has it that jelly bean is right around the corner at which time ROM development should really kick into high gear.
I have zero ROM-making skill so my hat goes off to those that do. Thanks for making my phone awesome.

I came from the evo 4g that I had for the last two years that I flashed a new rom every other week so the phone upgrade is awesome but the support is discouraging almost enough to make me go to the s3 or note 2. I'll wait and see what JB brings.
You got the better end of that deal, IMHO

Sometimes I think developing is overrated. Most ROM feel and look the same. I rather have a small community of developing then a large one full of copy cats ROM.
The hardware and built of this phone is just top notch and I refuse to downgrade over anything currently available.
Give me a CM10 ROM give me a stock rooted ROM and give me a stock with Mod ROM and I'm happy.

This exactly it for me and the reason that I went with the LGOG. I really enjoy the interaction that the Mopho devs brought to our very underutilized device and have faith that they can do the same here. I don't know of another device that can say they had functioning ports of AOKP, CM7, CM9, CM10, CM10.1 (almost), PA, Liquid Smooth, etc all by one dev.
Im about to do this today very excited

How is your phone?

Hey guys I am so torn right now with choosing this device. I currently have sprint with a gnex, and am looking at the optimus g or the note 2. The only thing I'm torn about is developer support. I would like to know how things are on your phones as far as custom stuff. I know you can unlock the bootloader now which is huge but how is the jelly bean support for the sprint version so far?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda app-developers app
Custom rom are slowly coming, currently there's support for CM10, AOKP and AOSP.
LG is also providing source code, so there's way for more in the future.
as for the JB support for the sprint, you can look in the LGOG Sprint section, people there will be more aware of this!

I flashed onto AOSP, so far so good. Excellent battery life on my E971. Getting 1 hr more screen time and not as much Android OS usage compared to stock. So far im at 12 hours on battery with 1 hr 35min of screen time and only at 51%. Only problem is that I miss the notification light, but thats a small price to pay for the newest OS and excellent battery life
WOW!!! I finally decided to keep the phone and now this... not good for LG Do you think they will correct this via warranty?
Correct what?
Gotta be honest with you....I absolutely LOVE this phone and dont think I'm ever going to root it. No need...its fast as all ****ing hell and the software works great. I've been rooting flashing ROM's on my past 2 phones for years and I'm kind of over it....at least for now Yeah the advantages are great but the cons are also a pain in the ass. Camera's that only half work, almost endless amounts of bugs, etc. Not to mention LG is rolling out JB as we speak.
As for how the phone is....its FASTTTTTT. I destroyed my girlfriends S3 in Quadrant and its eaten up everything I've put thrown at it (games, multitasking with apps, etc) with ease.
/\ thats great that you find it fast, I did too when I was using stock ics.. then I flased the JB rom and its no doubt faster over stock.. way more snappy.. like noticibly more as well as better battery life to boot..
Glad that I went to the trouble tbh, this rom beats stock ics by a loooong shot
Considering that everything works (at least for me it does) it was well worth the effort to install it..
Stock JB or some CM/AOKP/AOSP flavored one?
I have no doubt that JB is faster on this than ICS but I'm just gonna hold out for the official, stock JB update. It'll be here in the states in a month or so.
I loved my og... key word, loved..
Dropped it in water. :crying: gotta pay 150 to get a new one with telus..
Just got my LS970 from Sprint. I have LTE in my area so that's awesome. ICS on this phone is a little laggy. It's not as smooth as one would expect, especially scrolling through web pages with a lot of pictures. Even the FB, Twitter, and G+ plus apps tend to lag as you scroll through pics. Other than that this thing is solid. I'm liking it so far but i can't wait for the Jelly Bean update.

Until someone has posted a working rom in our Sprint Development page I would strongly recommend not flashing anything cloned from another OG version. Xbox is working tirelessly under very stressful conditions(St. Louis) to give us a CM version of JB. The biggest hindrance is that are phone is different from the other OG. Actually, all the OG are different from each other from one aspect to another. We all share the same CPU. So booting isn't an issue. But, after that it really is difficult to get each thing to work. The Sprint version uses its own CDMA which is not the same as what they use in Korea. At&t has its own camera, the Japanese version is waterproof(seriously), the Canadian version wishes it was an American.
If you flash any of these roms(unless triple confirmed it is safe) you can really jack stuff up. You need to not only back up your phone but I would back up your partitions.
My strongest recommendation if you are merely a hobby flasher is to wait. I know it has been a tough long road but the finish line is in sight. We will have source for our phone(LS970) in a month. We will have the OTA in a month. If you flash anything Korean be prepared to face the consequences if things don't go well.
So, what are we waiting on? The simple and most honest answer is LG. Send them an email, blast them on twitter, blast Sprint to have them blast LG, call the development department, email multiple sources, write a letter to the Android sites online. Maybe they could write a story about it. If you put their feet to the fire they will have to say something. But, be kind and sane in your approach. The problem of getting our phone updated is not because of lack of development. We have some great guys.

With LG's horrible update history, you can be assured that there will not be anymore updates for this phone. If you want 4.2.2, you'll need to go with an AOSP rom.
I'm sure 4.3 will happen once Google releases the source for it.
5.0 will be iffy because it supposedly runs on a different linux kernel, which would require an RPM/TZ firmware update for our phone. Unless LG gives us an update to 5.0, which they won't, we'll either need to borrow the Nexus 4's RPM/TZ firmware and make it work with our phones, or have to live without the update.

Major omission on my part -- I should have said 4.3 is definitely going to be possible via an AOSP rom, if 5.0 even happens for our phone that will be via an AOSP rom, too.
LG is done with this phone. I'll never do business with LG again purely on their bootloader locking tactics and the complete lack of updates and support for their devices. If the Nexus line ever goes CDMA or Sprint, I'm game. Otherwise, I'm going with Sammy or HTC. Big dev communities with their phones.
Lg has some killer hardware it would be pretty stupid for them to ruin it since people are beginning to like LG. they are turning heads with their hardware hopefully they are smart and support it software wise because I'm tired of not having a CDMA phone that gets timely updates.

Considering the Optomus G pro but...

Hey guys thinking of upgrading to this phone and I love the look, feel, and features of this phone, but it doesn't look like you guys have much going on in the way of development? I'd be coming from the Samsung Infuse, so I'm a bit spoiled, when the phone was newer lots of developers were building and porting custom roms, and currently there are about 4 variations of updated (Android 4.1+) roms in development. Currently I'm on Beanstalk for the Infuse (android 4.3) which is a great rom with tons of customization.
I wouldn't mind learning and developing myself but with the apparent shortness of developers this could be slow going. Am I missing something here, is there just not a lot of development because this is a relatively new device, or is it a hard or impossible device to hack?

Once cm10 gets closer we may see more since most roms are based off it but who knows.
I wouldn't expect development like what you're use to but like I said I don't miss it at all..
Hopefully the Nexus 5 will have a 5" screen like the rumors suggest and I can finally get a nexus device.
Yeah there a cm10.1 thats almost a daily. Pretty much everything works just a few bugs. There are repositories for a slimbean 4.3 on github but idk how far along that is as there been no release. Well like mrdsl said cm10 is the base for many of the good rom anyway and its almost done so I would expect to see development pick up soon. Especially as att keeps dropping the price makeing this easily the cheapest snapdragon600 device making it very appealing to many more people we should see the community for this phone grow a lot.

I agree .. it's a good stock rom. I would have to say most people install roms to improve performance but even on the Note2 I had I wasn't installing roms like I did in the past on every device prior.. and in fact this G pro benchmarks about 60 to 100 percent faster than the Note2 in most ... and so far it's been the fastest, slickest device I've used by far. I'm using Apex Launcher for customizing .. and at this point my phone looks like stock Android 4.3 and runs lightning quick.. and battery life has been stellar. And I'm liking and using the quicknote dedicated button! Only thing I miss about my note2 is kinda the S-pen and the inky blacks(contrast)
I have own a lot of Samsung devices...starting from s2 to s4 and I change my s4 for this device because I didn't feel I big upgrade from s3...of course I miss switching rooms but I can tell you that this phone is a lot quicker than many phone out there...the G pro is a lot more responsive than my wife note 2 and what I love about this phone is BATTERY this monster last the whole day

I enjoy mine and it's running stock but rooted. I've been able to do what I want with just root like getting rid of pesky qslides bar. It's cool but I don't use it and the apps are still there so ya. If you get this phone you'll enjoy it. Either way good luck with whatever you choose!

the only thing I do miss is my theme on the theme engine.
Once cm10 gets closer we may see more since most roms are based off it but who knows.

do u kno if theres a black theme where the dialerpad, contact list and system settings are dark?
Stock is good, but modded roms are better. that's my option. Because the stock rom is so perfect, we're hailing the rom, but we better make sure that doesn't offend the developers. Even it is perfect, it is still 4.1, we will need 4.2/4.3 roms very soon, and LG won't catch up with our interest. So, we better appreciate what developers are trying now. Pls don't say we don't want mod roms.
For me, I just have one request to the devs, whatever you do, pls make sure the Quick Remote is in your rom, coz I'm already obsessed with it so much. now I can control everything around me with my phone.
