I discovered this gem of an app a couple months ago thanks to an article on Lifehacker. Lifehacker's app recommendations can be hit or miss, so I took this with a grain of salt. But after trying it for a couple months, I couldn't be happier with the results and it's become one of my absolute favorite apps. I've noticed a few of you mentioning it in various forums as well, so apparently word has gotten around! But to those of you who have yet to try Greenify, I would highly recommend it. Basically it "auto-hibernates apps". So, for instance, if you have the Facebook app, but don't necessarily care to have it running in the background eating valuable battery life, Greenify will hibernate that app for you. It's very simple to set up and it has definitely extended my battery life after adding around 7-8 apps to my hibernate list. I'm attaching the Lifehacker article and Google Play links below.

Didn't notice that. Depending on if you use maps or not you could always freeze it in Titanium Backup.

Or you could use TiBu to make it a system app then use Greenify.
I apparently am not smart enough to run Greenify. How do you configure it?

basically, go into "manage apps" -> "running apps" and determine which apps are running that you really do NOT NEED to be running all the time. for me, it was facebook, scramble with friends, beat the streak, play music, and a few others. I then open the greenify app, and selected just those apps. then, greenify will hibernate them so that they are not running in the background. only downside is that I do not get notifications for those apps (which is fine by me). however, I can still access them just fine and they launch very quickly/smoothly as if they were not hibernating.
How did you Greenify Play Music? I don't see it on the list. Is that considered a system app?

Not really. Just open the app, hit the home button, then go into greenify and hibernate it.

Sorry, I had searched Greenify and got to this Razer forum, I have a Nexus 7. "Home" sends me to my home page on it. I used app/mover to change Play Music to a user app (but now Music is gone and won't install from Play Store...) Don't use it much anyway, but be nice to figure out Greenifying system apps.

Wow this app is great by far the best battery saving app I ever tried, I couldnt believe how many times apps were waking my phone and the funny thing is, they Dont even have notifications... So they were just waking the phone because they felt like it! but now I can still use the app and they Dont do anything in the background now! :thumbup:

Just a suggestion, if you have Titanium Backup Pro then you can convert system apps to user apps. Then you can set said app to hibernate in Greenify.

I'm interested as to what apps you have done this to? I have the Pro and would love to know which apps you have successfully converted, thanks ahead.
Can anybody help me out by explaining (or linking to me an article that explains) how Greenify actually works its magic? Does it just run a service in the background that is constantly monitors active processes that have been "Greenified" and forces these processes to go into "Hibernate" mode when the screen is off, and prevents any partial wakes?

Before greenify I would unplug my phone at 930 pm and wake up at 5 am and the battery would be at 78%, with greenify doing the same method I only drop to 88%!

This may very well be placebo, but battery life has been awesome recently, right after installing Greenify. CM10.1, stock CM kernel... Just another data point...

Hey guys, I always wandered why apps run I'm background even though its been 2 weeks or so since u used them.
How can I prevent that from happening?
The reason I am asking is because those apps kill my ram. My ram hit 80% occupied and every time I have to hit kill tasks.
Some other times I hit kill tasks but those apps keep running in background sooo annoying.
I also installed greenify which hibernate those apps and they keep running.
I don't wanna install them cause I use them from time to time. So what could be the solution for this problem?

The run at startup. Some do. Restart your phone check what's running and uninstall or stop the processes

I already limited that to only the apps I want to start at boot. So u don't think that's the issue.
At boot things go well but after 4 days things start to get messy and apps start in background by it self and when I kill them, they just load again. Its nuts.

Android is designed to do this..
Do a search for how android / linux kernel managed ram.. YOUR Fighting your phone and how it works by killing off apps. If you device needs the ram it will kill off the least used app ..
but there are some rogue apps. IF THE APP Creates account LIKE Facevirus
you have to disable its sync settings.. ohh and you will have to do so every day or to it turns its setting back to suit there needs not yours..
other rogue apps do the same..
If you are rooted, you can use Greenify. With this you can hibernate any application that starts in background which will save both your RAM and Battery.

I've been running the same rom for months it hasn't been changed for at least 3 months. I've experienced massive drain lately. I've read/seen others talking about it in other Rom threads.
I haven't seen much in the way of ideas. Yesterday I cleared cache. I just don't know what the heck is going on.

Try using Titanium backup to convert google services to a user app instead of it being a system app. Then you can use greenify to hibernate it. This will render some notifications useless but all your apps with google will still work correctly once you open them. If you use autorun manager you disable all background services for those google apps.

Had my note 10.1 2014 for about 2 weeks. charged like 4 times so battery cycle is not the issue. im at 19% right now and its indicating that play services used up 48% so that means that 34% (71%*48%) was used up by play services. i have sync turned off and most google services turned off (play music,books,videos etc). i am wondering what this drain in battery may be caused by. betterbatterystats shows no apps or google services taking up battery. anyone else experience this issue?

definitely, across all my android devices (p605 and nexus 5).
the first thing i do after flashing is converting google play services to user app (either using TIB or uninstalling/reinstalling) and then greenify it. i found that using greenify to hibernate google play services as a system app won't go the full way.
im happy with that workaround, although i find google should fix this. its the same on all devices across all android versions for a couple weeks already. some are affected, some aren't.
Can we freeze google services? What will effect it?

It will only affect automatic updates. You have to open play store to trigger automatic updates, other than that no side effects.

Ok Ok had to reactivate google service, a few apps won't open unless it's activated, like Google keep, maps, Groupon , probably a few more

you don't freeze it, use greenify to force hibernation. that way it can be put to sleep when you're not using the device.

Thanks for the input everyone..and although greenify seems to be a viable option, I'm trying to hold off rooting.. Never know when warranties can come in handy..not trying to pay for replacing parts etc..and battery life seems like the only reason to root so may just have to live with it until a hopeful update rolls out.

The problem lies across all Android devices it's a bug with location services. go to location services and switch it off and your battery life will be restored to normal guaranteed. Google will fix this in their next update

i've got location services disabled on all my devices and play still kills the battery. greenifying it is the only thing that works for me.

you gotta either use titanium to make it a user app (move from system) or use the donation version of greenify and install xposed framework.

it must just be a mix of apps or set ups that cause this. even other still have the drain with location services off. i've turned of location history in maps. the only device not affected by this drain is my daughter asus hd7.

I just started getting this battery drain too,... I am not sure if it is coincidental but it seems after I've installed FasterGPS app and set the NTP server to my closest location...
So, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. Great and very helpful site!
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note II and an SIII and SII before them. I'm a bit of a Samsung Galaxy fan.
I've noticed with these devices that apps like Spotify, Netflix and Redbox drain my battery like crazy but when I go to:
Settings / More / System manager / Application manager and scroll to these apps, then click the "Force stop" button it helps like crazy.
I've tried looking this up on the inter-webs and it appears that you're not supposed to do that?
I've also tried using task manager type apps to kill these programs when I'm done with them but even though these apps say that the progs are killed I still have the "Force stop" button highlighted and my battery draining in the background.
Please help me understand this? My next thought is to as for help writing a simple bit of code that kills all of the apps that I hardcode in the program.
Try Greenify from the play store it hibernates apps your not using and it has an extention in xposed to do even more with system apps try it b4 doing something more drastic

This Greenify program is perfect! It does exactly what I was looking for. I pick the apps that I want to participate in this and it creates a hibernate shortcut on my desktop. I click the shortcut and it "Forces Close" all of the apps that I pre-chose! Thank you!

Debloat listed apps to speed up or eliminate lag. Uninstall apps not needed, Freeze apps or system files you're not sure to Uninstall. And then create or wait for custom roms.

System App Remover (root) is excellent for this.
This is excellent free app for debloating. It tells you what can be safely removed and what should be left alone and allows for batch uninstall.

Big one for me is getting up and running quick with Titanium Backup restores. Bought before root was out this time but normally.
Disabling stuff too.
Adblock plus, Lucky patcher
Also upgrade Google Maps back to 6.14.4 is a huge one on my phone. Not so much on the tablet but I may use it in the car more. Will need My Maps for travel.
Custom ROM's when they are out.
Probably forgetting something.

How much would you say debloating helped with speeding up your device? Does it fix the delay from when you press the home button and the animation running? Does it smooth out the stuttering in animations?

How will you use google map/navigator on the tablet? Is your table with 4G? As far as I know google map requires network access.
I am using CoPilot for navigating in the car. It uses downloaded maps.
With my phone I have been using google navigation but I did not like it too much. It is too insistent with its idea of where to go. It will only
recalculate the route after many miles passed its suggested direction. I had this issue in highway, it may be different in city navigation.
I rooted my S 8.4 wifi (T700) and cleaned bloatware.. now I would like to install twrp or cwm.. to make a backup and play deeper with the toy..
Has anyone done it already? Any different from other androids?

@Peter234: Probably tethering. I have zero problems using my Note 3 as a hotspot. I also think that Google Maps will let you 'cache' a route as well; IIRC it's one of the Labs features.

Debloating doubles your battery life, and the device will always respond much faster because those running system apps eat up a lot of RAM and CPU power. After I did a massive debloat, the lag and stuttering pretty much went away.
You can also install root apps, which can speed up your RAM, prolong battery life, and improve performance. My favorites are Greenify, SD Booster, and Autokiller.

De bloating does not double your battery life not even nearly double. Also 80% free RAM is no quicker than 20% free RAM. Sure, improvements can be had but let's keep things in the realm of reality here.
