Hey guys so I tether once and a while when needed with my verizon gnex which works just fine with multiple devices like my laptop and nexus 7. I figured this was a piece of cake easy thing for my chromecast as well, but it appears I was wrong. I am currently on the kevdliu 4.3 rom which continues to allow my tethering ability but for some reason my chromecast cannot seem to work with it. Even if I do manage to connect to it which is rare, I cannot then access it from another device*nexus 7*. The cast button doesnt appear and when I then run the chromecast app it states that my chromecast isnt connected and tries to go through the connection process again.
So I know you are all about to say things like "maybe it wont work on the phone" or "this should go in the chromecast threads section" which for the second I almost did, but the interesting thing is my coworker with his galaxy s4 tethered just fine between my tablet and chromecast. He has tmobile and uses the official free one through them as he isnt rooted.
any suggestions?
edit, I am now seeing something interesting. It seems that although both my laptop and tablet appear to be connected to the tethering, if I started using my laptop first then the moment I picked up my tablet it then disconnects me from the internet on my laptop.
Have you figured anything out?
I currently am in the same situation too. I don't have a home wifi yet and use tethering for most of the things I do online.
I can't get anything to work whether trying to set it up from the phone or laptop.

OK... I want to use the option to use my phone's internet (via Bluetooth) with my Acer Iconia Tab A100. My phone is a Nokia Asha 302, and yes it has BT PAN... When I pair my phone with my Iconia tab it actually has the option to connect and use phones internet, but when I try it connects and nothing else happens... However when I try to disconnect, my phone disconnects and tablet hangs. My computer has no problems connecting to my phone. I'm at my wits end. Any Ideas? File swap Ideas? Config Mods? I'm open to anything.
Thanks
BTW... My tab is sporting the ICS leak with root, unlocked BL, and thor recovery installed.
ok...
So I did more playing around and found out that when I choose to use my phone's internet and don't get any net. But when I do a pand --show --list it shows "bnep0 B4:395:09:8E:F4 PANU" which is a problem when my bt address is really F4:8E:095:39:B4... Not really sure what the deal is...
I also use BT to tether. Latest version of PDANet on the A100 and Foxfi on the phone. They work seamlessly together.
I couldn't get it to work before the ICS leak, but since then both PDANet and Foxfi have updated. It worked fine when I was on ICS leak, it still works now that I have gone back to HC 3.2.1.
Still can't seem to figure this out... I waited for the official release hoping to have this issue resolved, but still have the same problem. It really seems like some sort of Android bluetooth bug. I mean... All I have to do is pair my tablet with my phone and it natively gives me the option to use my phones internet via BT and when I select it, it connects to the phone only to not actually get any internet connectivity at all (even though my PC has no problems doing this). When I try to disable the connection my tablet locks up forcing me to power it down and boot it back up... I'm not sure, but could the problem be due to the fact that this BT PAN connection is a sort of AD HOC protocol? There was a resolution to this with the AD HOC Wifi issue so could there be a similar step to take for this BT PAN issue?
As I said in the post above you, latest version of PDANet Tablet on the A100 and Foxfi on the phone works. It works after the OTA update, too.
Thanks for your reiteration, however... As I posted in the very beginning, my phone is a Nokia... I noted this mostly because Nokia in the past hadn't provided their phones with the bluetooth PAN profile... I bought this phone specifically for this profile and that it had a much faster processor... And as explained above, everything appears as it should even to the point of seeing the available feature of my phone... Android seems to still have some bugs to work out so it looks as if I'll have to wait some more till it's resolved...
a script
I have the same need and same problems. One of my phones has PAN, the other not.
What it worked for me is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19943673&postcount=2
(I improved the script for my needs, but now you have the idea
Whatever!
Got rid of the Acer Iconia Tab A100 and upgraded to the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0... It had all of these features available out of the box... I didn't actually get rid of it, just gave it to my wife... Same thing...
Has anyone been able to get bluetooth tethering working on any rom? If so, what rom, kernel, etc?
I guess no one is trying this? I finally got both a Nook Color (Cyanogenmod) and a 4th gen iTouch to pair and show as being connected and sharing internet connection, but neither device can actually load a web page in it's browser for some reason. It's like data is not being pushed across bluetooth even though everything is setup and connected properly.

Never got it working on a stock based rom, but it works great on CM.
Hi,
I'm using Tablet Talk on Nexus 4 phone and Nexus 7 tablet installed in my car dash. The application works totally fine except for one strange issue: it appears to cut off internet to other apps installed on Nexus 7. Internet connection is shared by the phone via Bluetooth.
When Tablet Talk is connected, Youtube shows connection error, Waze navigation cannot reach its servers most of the time (though not always), Chrome browser either works extremely slowly (loading google search results for about 3 minutes) or don't work at all.
Everything works fine as soon as I disconnect Tablet Talk.
I was unable to google similar issue reported by other Tablet Talk users, so maybe I'm doing anything wrong?
Any ideas are most welcome.

If you are using Bluetooth to connect to tablet talk, and to share internet.... Then there is your problem, I think u can only have one device connected with Bluetooth at a time.
Try setting phone as mobile hotspot, and connect the nexus 7 via WiFi. Then use tablet talk in WiFi mode. And forget about Bluetooth and its narrow bandwidth.

I would agree if there is no internet at all - either Tablet Talk or internet. However, there are two things that make me believe that there's another reason: first, there is internet connection, yet somewhat flaky, in Waze navigation app, and some others, while Tablet Talk is connected. Next, Tablet Talk uses the same bluetooth connection - no extra [virtual] device or BT profile appears in the bluetooth connection list, as far as I remember.
I've asked the Tablet Talk developer about this; still awaiting their response.

Yup its still one connection but 2 data feeds, therefore 2 connections through Bluetooth. it makes sense to me this issue. That's why I never ran tablet talk this way. I know Bluetooth don't have much bandwidth.
I would be curious of the answer too. I use tablet talk just not in this configuration.

Sure, but yet it's always been sufficient for any youtube video and other tasks. I don't believe that Tablet Talk in standby mode consumes all the bandwidth... but who knows, maybe you're right. I'll try to find a tool that'll allow to monitor BT bandwidth/load, if it's technically possible. Thanks for the clue!

I'll post it here. Today I've received the developer's acknowledgement for my support inquiry - they've escalated it to 2nd level support for review.
I am trying to find a way to cast movies from phone to tv in my camper without using a wifi network. I used to be able to cast from my Note 3 on 4.4 but apparently miracast is broken on 5.0.2? What would work without internet and a wifi network? I read that a Amazon Firestick would work once it's initially set up on a wifi network but haven't been able to verify.

I recently moved and had to wait for my ISP to setup internet. It idn't work for me even with a internal network. It needs an outside internet connection for setup to complete. None of my Amazon devices or Chromecast worked and only one of my Plex clients worked because it was previously configured for automatic sign in.

Here is how I do it when I travel but you may need a intermediate device. I would download movies onto my phone, start up my hotspot, use another device to setup the chromecast and then use an app like Local Cast to cast the movies from my phone to the chromecast. Recently I tried it and Local Cast wouldnt see the chromecast from my phone. So I moved the movies to my tablet and my tablet over the hotspot could see the chromecast and then I would stream them that way.
Because you arent actually pulling data for the movies (other than whatever background processes are running on the tablet) it doesnt sap away at your hotspot data.
I downlaod my movies to my Note 3 which is currently a wifi only device. I then set up a hot spot on my pixel xl and set up the chromecast. Then using allcast I was able to connect and cast to the chromecast. I swear this was much easier when miracast worked. I haven't tried the Firestick yet to see what happens.
I tested a few things to see what would work with the chromecast. Hotspot had to be on and left on. I could never get "guest" mode to work but the info says it should work so a guest can cast without being on your wifi network. No clue how to make that work yet.
I'll try and test firestick tonight. I also have a spare wifi router that I might take and see what I can do with it.
The firestick did not work.
This is so annoying since it worked on Android 4.4 and now on 5.0.2 it doesn't. I just want to simply cast my phone to my tv in a camper without a wifi network. I suppsoe I can eventually buy a wifi router but I really shouldn't have to. I wonder if the Note 8 will have Miracast or not?
Miracast works with crDroid ROM

I just got Miracast working with "crDroidAndroid-8.1-20180405-marlin-v4.1" for the Pixel XL. I just went into settings - connected devices - cast - then hit the three dots in the upper right hand corner to 'enable cast'. On my Fire Stick I started device mirroring. Bingo! Fire Stick shows up as connected. Works with VLC and Youtube testing so far. Sound and video work. Rotation of phone to horizontal creates full screen (55" TV) mode. I have magisk 16* installed but there are no settings I used in that app for this to work, just wanted it noted as it is the only non-stock app installed so far.

I posted this in the Pixel thread as well, forgot which forum I was on....

Interesting. I am on 8.1 stock, rooted, and custom kernel. I will have to test again when camping season kicks in here soon. I did pick up a Galaxy s7 Edge that will hopefully cast with Miracast. The Note 3 I was trying to use is retired now.
Once I enabled tethering on mine I was able to cast to my Chromecast with the in app cast button. I either had data disabled (the x over the cellular signal) or I turned on airplane mode then the tethering. This allowed it to work for some reason that I cannot explain in much detail. Basically one of those two things maybe both can't remember causes the traffic to be properly routed locally instead of over the net like before. I accomplished this on stock Android using localcast,YouTube, and Netflix less than a month ago.
Hi All,
Just thought I would share a recent 'trick' I worked out to get TV Anywhere working on the Fire TV.
you will of course have to sideload the apk.
A few things to take note for those who are unaware
*Geo restricted to UK residents only
*you will need a sub to use this service.
*you will need to setup your wifi connection beforehand
This method is far from practical and does require trial and error,
The application picks up rooted devices so if yours is rooted then you will need to hide the SU Binary and clear the cache of the app.
Launch the app while connected via LAN - while the application is logging in remove the LAN cable- during which time the fire TV will connect to Wifi.
Once you in you should be able to launch a stream.
Im hoping there are Devs out there who can automate this process or perhaps find some other workaround?
Good Luck.
using just wi-fi, couldn't you still connect without using the LAN. What I'm trying to understand is why is a LAN necessary for the handoff to wifi if in the end, you end up using WiFi to stream anyway.
Perfect example, I'm using a Nexus 7 with the virgin tvanywhere app sideloaded and running it through a proxy. Runs fine, no issues using it on wifi. Are you saying with the fire TV, it requires a LAN connection initially in order to work, then requires wifi in order to stream. Haven't tried it yet as I would have to wait until next month to remove one of my devices in order to register the fire TV with virgin.

Hi
to elaborate a little further, When sideloading the latest version 4.xx you will be unable to login, simply seeing "connecting" in a continuous loop.
I then sideloaded an older version from 2016 which allowed me to login, connect to the TiVo and view the guide.
When attempting to load up a stream error code D:14 appears (could be due to HDMI detect?), don't bother asking the Virgin TV Anywhere Mods about this, as they couldn't give a damn, in fact I have been complaining about the quality of the streams for years now to no avail.
Nevertheless the only way I managed to get a stream to play was having the LAN connected and removing the cable while the stream loads, once connected to wifi it works. trial and error basis of course and certainly not practical to do every time you wish to watch something.
I'm hoping someone out there can use this info to circumnavigate the issue.
Thanks for the explanation. Just needed to clarify before I decided if it was worth the effort in using one of my tvanywhere device slots for use with the Fire TV.
