[Q] Metro PCS GS4 Tethering after custom rom - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I flashed my metro s4 to a custom rom (wicked v4 for tmobile) since the phone is basically a tmobile phone with a few metro badges according to other threads...flashed seamlessly, works great aside from tethering.
I cant get the tethering to work anymore, before it would direct me to the metro tether page, but now the page connection (i.e google.com) times out...I am connected to the phone and my wireless connection says I have "internet access" but wont load anything.
I assume this is because the APN settings were replaced with Tmobile APN settings per the tmobile rom.
I Checked the settings and they are in fact 2 apn sets to choose from. Either tmobile LTE or tmobile tethering, I had to alter the tmobile tethering apn to get it to connect to 4g. but it wont allow my laptop to recieve any data.
Im assuming I need metro PCS's tether settings since my phone is attempting to tether through Tmobile maybe.
Anybody have that information or know how I can get this working?
On a side not I am forced to use the native tether app on the 4g instead of my original app i tried (wifi tether TrevE mod) because that doesnt seem to work...my laptop doesnt see any ssid being broadcasted with that app.

Nothing?

[Q] 4g tether app help?

im looking for a way to tether my phone either wifi (preferable) or usb to my laptop but he difference is, I want it to do 4g. I dont think th wifi tether app doesnt do 4g. And I know some roms have sprints hotspot app but I dont want to pay and use that. Is it possible to crack the official sprint app to be free? or something similar?
Are you rooted? If so then you can use the Wireless Tether app it does allow you tether usin 4g as a internet source. Just make sure that you turn 4g on and let it connect before you start the wifi tether. their might be a few others but this one has yet to fail me. also I believe that sprints/htc's wireless hot spot and the usb tether are 3g only (least if your running custom roms).
Yeah, on the roms with wifi hotspot enabled you don't have to pay, the code is broke. Not sure about 4g though, haven't tried. As other poster said, wireless tether on market is solid.

On wireless tether i had an issue with cutoffs and disconnects. I fixed it by changing settings to channel 1. Not my tip, im just sharing it

I could never get the broken/fixed sprint hotspot to broadcast 4g, I'd start 4g before starting it and it kicks me out of 4g even when I try to restart it it wouldnt let me use 4g at all. But as soon as I turned off the sprint hotspot my 4g connects.

The verification for 4g hotspot is different and hasn't been cracked yet. So, the built in hotspot will NOT allow 4g tethering. It will go into a scan/connected/scan loop as long as the hotspot is active.
Wireless Tether and Easy Tether are both in the market and will allow 4g tethering without issues. I have both installed and use them most every day to tether 4g, works great.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!
pdanet it works great and supposedly fastest 4g connection from USB out there

[Q] Can my mobile operator block the tethering option?

Hi Guys, I am using an XPERIA ARC 3G on Tigo Colombia.
I have an unlimited data plan and it works smooth, but the tethering option is not working. I have tried on several laptops and the connection does not provide internet access to any of them.
Can the network operator find out I am tethering and block the network access?
My sister owns an Iphone on the same operator and tethering was even block from the options but she called the support help desk and they enabled that option; unfortunatly the same help desk seems to be unwilling to help me because I own an android phone.
Thanks for your suggestions.
i'd like to know as well. I'm on Fido in Canada, and my tethering was working on 2.1 with Barnacle on my SE Xperia X10, but now on my Arc, the 2.3 default wifi tethering isn't working. In fact, it disrupts and blocks my data connection when i try to tether, and is not even broadcasting a wifi signal for other devices to see.
I also downloaded Barnacle Wifi Tether and tried to tether that way, but that's not working either.
I was under the impression that as long as you have a data plan, a network operator can't block tethering because it can't differentiate what the data is being used for...
See my thread here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103129

foxfi/ Wifi Tether not working

I have a tmobile galaxy s3 on the monthly 4g plan. I cannot get wifi tethering to work.
I downloaded foxfi and turn hotspot on but my pc can never see the wifi network name so i can never connect to it.
I download wifi tether and set it to galaxy nexus cdma and turn on wifi tether. My pc sees it and i can connect to it. Everything works great..for about 10 mintues and then every site i go to i get redirected to tmobile page to activate and upgrade to tmobile mobile hotspot. I even tried changing my device to auto, galaxy nexus gsm, galaxy s2, but tethering starts with an error and doesnt work at all.
How are you guys getting this to work?
And when foxfi hotspot does showup on my pc i try and connect and enter the password i set but it just gives me an error, and says unable to connect.

There is another companion app to download with Foxfi that is supposed to help it not get detected as hotspot usage. Also free. Works fine on my Verizon SGS3. Maybe you should give it a try if you haven't already. Sounds like TMo knows what you are doing already. As for more bring seen byyour LC, I can't help you there. Shows up fine when referring my tablet

I had the same issue so I called 611. They told me that when I upgraded to S3, they removed the Hotspot feature and so he added it back. I think T-mobile is trying to fool users into buying if they don't know. Call the rep and explain that you had it before the S3 and would like to get it back.
Good luck!
Thomas:good:
Ah but I can't do that since I actually don't have it. I'm on a monthly 4G prepaid plan so I don't have it and can't even purchase it.

[Q] Tethering Using the Nexus on T-Mobile's New Unlimited (No Data Caps) 4G Internet

according to this article:
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/08/t-mo...d-nationwide-4g-data-plan-with-press-release/
T-Mobile will finally allow you to have an unlimited data plan (with no throttling, and no data caps) in other words, this is real unlimited not pseudo-unlimited.
however if you read the article i posted above, it says tethering hotspot not allowed.
So here is the question.
how many of you on the GSM version Samsung Galaxy Nexus have successfully used the stock tethering feature of the galaxy nexus WHILE BEING ON t-mobile's new unlimited 4G data plan where tethering is not allowed?
I have a HTC sensation and can use stock hotspots with a custom apn unlock for tmo
Grogg is the developer
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
are you on t-mobile's new unlimited 4G plan I mentioned in that article I posted?
I dont know what a "custom apn unlock for tmo" is.
right now, this is how i tether,i go to the tethering menu in system settings, and i checkmark "portable w-fi hotspot"
and that's it , i'm done.
would upgrading to t-mobile's new fancy unlimited no data caps no throttling 4G internet cause me to have to jump through hoops just to tether?
Has ANYONE taken advantage of t-mobile's new unlimited 4G data plans? the ones with no throttling and no data caps? i assume this would be easy enough for anyone to test their tethering feature if they've signed up for the new data plan. if you have the new data plan please let me know.
The GNex won't ask T-Mobile for permission to tether, and the traffic will look like mobile traffic. So the only way they can stop you is if they are sniffing out red flags like browser user agent strings. If they do that you might be able to punch through if you have access to a VPN.
You could always try it for a month and see. If you aren't happy, change back to another plan.
Or you could decide not to go breaking T-Mobile's T&C.
I've done it w my unlocked Gnex with success. Was linked up to 4 devices yesterday took up 2.3 GBs once done.
#Galaxy Nexus HSPA+
I've tethered on my Gnex with success also. but my dilemma is that i'm on a grandfathered $20 per month unlimited 4G internet plan as an add-on to my minutes plan, and it works great for tethering.
luckylui, you are on the new $30 unlimited data plan right?
i would like it if someone would not only confirm that they could tether successfully, but if they are also using t-mobile's new no-tethering allowed 4G internet to tether.
There's nothing T-Mobile can do to stop tethering on the unlimited plan that they can't already do on any of their other plans. You're using a Nexus, so they don't have custom firmware to block. The only thing they can do is block certain UAstrings of desktop browsers (which they're shying away from since Chrome for Android came out), or cancel your plan for abuse.

I'm on the $30 UNLTD. I've used it for days without being blocked. I just downloaded a whole factory image off Google from my desktop tethering via USB. DL at 7mbps. No issues with my side at all.

I have the new no-throttling plan and I'm currently tethering via Wi-Fi hotspot. This is actually the first time I've ever used it (tried before and it nothing happened; guess I wasn't patient enough). So far, I've done a few speed tests and some light browsing without issue. My data is also $20/month, btw.
I have the nexus s, on the past I had the gradgathered not truly unlimited 5gb plan that one worked good for tethering the only problem that it had 5gb restriction then it slowed down no were it was really unpleasant to see youtube videos. Now I have the new unlimited plan for tethering is weird when I try to use it on my computer it tells me local access apps like messenger don't connect until I use firefox then they're able to connect and it works fine on firefox. On the other hand when I try to connect it on internet explorer this weird t-mobile's page comes up not letting me connect to the internet offering the hotspot add on for $15/month. Also when I tether to my ps3 is not working anymore the same t-mobile page comes up, and of course the fu**ing rooted tether app does not work with ps3 wifi so right now I'm on the look up of an app that lets my rooted nexus s tether to my ps3 or a way to tether normally without that t-mobile page coming up. Oooh and a tip you can get a monthly discount of about $10 fldollars if you been with t-mobile for a long time just ask for it.

T-Mobile is detecting the UAstring of the browser, seeing one that isn't available via the Android handset itself, and blocking. That's why when you browse on IE (or the PS3 browser) it knows that you're not on your phone.
You can try using a UAstring switcher extension/addon for Chrome/Firefox, its worked for me.

It's weird now even with the wi-fi tether app the tethering is not working now they'r catching my speed and blovking my tethering? What's the point on rooting and installing wifi tether if it's not gonna work either?

Because like I said, they detect tethering based on UAstring, which is how your browser tells pages what device it is. So it doesn't matter what program, ROM, or anything you use because when you eventually get to the site you'll identify as a desktop and they'll block it.
I had a HTC Sensation and now have a S3, both of which have been rooted and AOSP ROMs flashed. That has been working fine for me. Don't use Chrome. My girls Nexus S with any combo of ROMs doesn't tether anymore.

I just got onto Tmobile from verizon for the unlimited data. If this is the case (the UAstring is what's preventing tethering) then using a VPN connection should fix that right?
Set up the VPN on your phone, connect to it, then set up your tethering. Then Tmobile should have no idea what you're doing, or where the data is being used, other than the fact that all the data is being pushed through a VPN server.
I haven't tried tethering yet just because i wanna know the full extent to which tmobile is able to monitor tethering techniques.
Standard practice is that when a phone is connected to VPN and tethering, the tether bypasses the VPN.
So really the VPN should be initiated from the device that is connected to the phone, not from the phone.

To answer the OP's original question. I just switched over to T-Mobiles new unlimited everything plan and can confirm that tethering still works and is unaffected.

Don't some mobile providers sniff for pings to Windows update server? I remember reading that if you didn't have a tethering plan and they saw pings to the widows update server they would tell you to stop. Otherwise they would add a tethering plan to your account.

[Q] How to evade tethering block on note 2?

Hey guys.
I'm a proud owner of a nice Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone.
I'm in the UK, pay monthly with 3 mobile.
I've rooted my phone, but the rom is still the stock one (I'm not exactly an expert and so I don't really want to mess around with it with my noobhands, the phone is costing me loads already).
After a lot of pain and sweat I managed to get USB tethering working through PDANet 3.50 with level 1 tether hiding.
Without ticking the hide option, or using any other app, or using the stock tether options, a second after connecting with my laptop (windows 7), I can't surf the internet, I immediately get redirected to 3's tether block site that tells me off, both on the laptop and the phone.
Question is simple, how to get around this? I mean get wifi tethering work without 3 knowing it.
I tried:
most wifi tethering apps on the market, rooted and nonrooted
the stock wifi tethering options, both wifi and bluetooth
changing the user string in my browser
I'm not on The One Plan, sadly, I would love to be, but I didn't know it's the only one with tethering allowed. And because I'm in a contract, I can't do anything either. 3's tethering addon is more than unreasonable - 5 pounds for 1GB. Ridiculous.
Thanks!
Dan
Edit1: Certain sites trigger the tether block and I have to restart the phone or turn on flight mode for some seconds few seconds after I visit them
bump
I found that flashing a custom rom and then activating wifi hot spot the tethering worked fine on my plan which was text 500 on 3 with 5 pound Internet add on which didn't allow tethering and got that blocking page before I did the custom rom I just used in the built in tethering no apps

I found a simple solution that worked for me on Orange UK, might work on other networks too. You will need to create a new APN and copy over all the settings from your default access point (you can't edit the default). Near the bottom of the APN settings there is an option "APN type" - mine was set to "default, supl". Add "dun" to the end of this list e.g. "default, supl, dun" and select this as the default access point.
