(Q) Going from TW 4.1.2 to any 4.2.2 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there anything special I gotta know? I'm am experienced flasher but haven't put cm on my s3 and now I wanna step it up but don't wanna lose any data and I read somewhere that the file system is different so that when going to 4.2.2 you basically reset everything on your phone? Thanks for the help!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Nothing special flashing 4.2.2, just make sure your bootloaders are updated. Usually, your old files on your internal will be moved to a folder, usually labeled 0 or legacy. It should be located in the mnt or storage folders. I usually just use es file explorer to search for a file from my old internal files. Happy flashing

Right on ty and I'm on dlk3 but is that newest or is dlk4? Also how easy is it to go back to a TW 4.1.2?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

dlk3 is the newest for AT&T. DLK4 is for other models. If you got your phone with dlk3 or updated through ota or kies, your bootloaders should be fine.

4.2.1 "0" folders!!!!

I'm on 4.2.1 and everytime I flash a new rom, It creates this new "0" Folder. I already know why it creates these folders.
Problem is, these folders are not populated with anything inside. They're just copies of the same folder but empty.
My questions is, for someone like me who has a full /sdcard, what is the best and quickest way to move all my folder back to /sdcard and get rid of the "0" folders. I have about 7 of them now...
Moving them one by one seems incredibly slow since the nexus internal memory isn't fast at all...
Tried that myself, removing everything from 0 folder effectively deleted everything as far as android was concerned .... the data in sdcard was no longer readable

I was wondering what would happen if I deleted the 0 folders as well. I think I might back everything up to my PC and do some tinkering with the folders.

These "0" Folders should no longer appear if you are using the latest TWRP recovery. I even read that the latest CWM recovery has also fixed this.
When it happened to me, I installed the new ROM (of course, rooted) then used ES File Explorer to CUT the data from the deepest "0" Folder then paste it to the main /sdcard/ place. Afterwards, all my files were on /sdcard/ and the "0" folder as well but it is empty now because I took the data out of it, so I deleted the "0" Folder. I lost nothing of my data this way.
If you are going to try this, then first use ADB to pull the data from /sdcard/ to your PC then try so you can push your data again if anything goes wrong
Hope this helps
You don't need ADB, just connect your phone to your PC and open up the storage.
Find the current 0 folder or w/e that your system is currently using. (You can check date it was modified)
Paste it in the /Sdcard and delete everything else.
You said you knew why it was doing it but you kept doing it? Your harsh on yourself, update your recovery.
O and the answer is in 1 of these threads too, probably to same thread you downloaded your ROM from.
so the new CWM, 6.0.1.5 fixes this? I dont have this problem yet because i havent flashed a new rom after 4.2 but I just want to make sure before I do. Thanks.

well I have the newest twrp and I get 0 folders all time when jumping from rom to rom and legacy folders. I just take everything out of them and merge it back into the main folders.... it works perfect (nothing gets lost) my worry is im maybe adding files that are ment to be deleted.. never anything good in the 0 folders just boring app crap but then again I only test other 4.2.1 roms I don't use them. So maybe given time the 0 folders would get big? if so iI woulde love a fix I searched a lot but i keep finding these threads so I thought poswt.
Your not crazy new recovery isn't a fix at all
For me, if i use latet CWM, if i flash from 4.1 to 4.2, the files will stay the same. But if i flash from 4.2 to 4.1, then it start creating 0 folder. But if i flashed 4.2 roms to 4.2 roms, no 0 folder was created.
However, i tried latest TWRP last night, flashing PA 4.2 rom from CNA 4.1, it still create the 0 folder.
Its weird..and annoying

Ok if I already got 0 folder how do I fix this?
So going from 4.2 to 4.1 on CWM you don't end up with a left over 0folder and legacy driver? I only get them going from 4.2 to 4.1
Not the other way around
iChrist I love twrp

Files deleted from sdcard

I flashed carbon ROM. Everything was working great. Wanted to try some touchwiz ROMs so I flashed the virtue ROM. Got the sdcard/0. Read about it and so I renamed sdcard/0 to sdcard and moved it to replace the original sdcard. But in twrp I still couldn't find my files so I flashed back to carbon ROM and now I have sdcard and sdcard 0, sdcard 1 and emulator with a 0 file in and none of them have files in them. They're all empty. Seems as though everything has been deleted even my nandroids. Tb backups are gone. I can't even find the directory for twrp. But it seems like everything is still there cause my available storage is at 5gbs. I should have more than 5gbs available it seems like. I've searched and kind find anything when the files are missing. Any help would be appreciated. I'm at a loss as to what to do to get things back to normal.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
Dude. Never mess with the internal storage NEVER delete files you think are important. The file you messed with is the MAIN "sd card" "0" is where all your Samsung stuff goes to dude.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
I didn't have a 0 folder until I flashed to a tw ROM from carbon. Everything I read was that folder is created when u flash back from aosp to tw. Copy it back to the sdcard folder any everything should be normal. I did that and everything seemed fine but I didn't like the tw ROM I was in so I flashed back to carbon and that's when the other folders were created but everything was gone.
But the odd part is I still have twrp recovery but can't find it in root explorer and under storage it says I have 11 gbs total of which 5 are available. But it doesn't show anything using those 6gbs. Its almost like everything is there just hidden.
I'm wondering if I unroot and go back to stock state that clears it up or I just smash it and use my best buy insurance. Cause something's not right. Carbon ROM still working for me but having that little of storage available just seems like something is wrong.

Alright. Im back on stock. Still rooted with stock recovery.
All of my files are still there as I thought. But they are buried. From what ive read I should be able to copy those back into the original sdcard folder. Im about to leave work and head home. I'll post the file paths if anyone is willing to walk me thru the process.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
That happened because you flashed CarbonRom which is 4.2.2, which changes the directory structure to support multiple user accounts.
You would have been alright if you hadn't mucked with the sdcard directory tree. Flash back to bone stock and you should be good. But never ever mess with sdcard directories again :silly:
So before I flashed anything I could find everything under home-> >sdcard. Now everything under that path is just empty folders except there is another sdcard folder that has everything full. Tb backups. Nandroids. Downloads. App data.
But if I go under home->> storage->>sdcard0->> sdcard everything is also in there. Duplicates.
Am I able to delete these or clean it up so I dont have doubles if everything? Its using up a lot of my storage.

Im back on bare bone stock now by the way. Rooted with stock recovery.

Jeez. Theres a 0 folder under home>> sdcard that has all the sdcard folders in it too. But it doesn't have duplicates it has other files from my last rom to get me back to stock. This is out of control.

The problem stems from the difference between 4.2 and 4.1.2. They added multi-user support in 4.2. If you go back to a stock based rom (4.1.2), and browse your sdcard, you'll see a folder called 0 on the root of it. Under here is where 4.2 will store the new files. When you're on 4.2, however, the files that are not under the 0 directory, but one directory up in the hierarchy, will not show up. The easiest solution would be to go to a stock based rom, and move all your folders underneath the 0 directory. Now when you go to cm10, or any 4.2+ rom, everything will show up on the root of the sdcard. Then, if for whatever reason, you go back to a 4.1.2 rom, they'll still be accessible, just under the 0 folder. I switch back and forth sometimes, and for me the easiest way was to leave them in the 0 folder. It's one extra folder level I have to navigate, but I'll take that trade-off to make it so when I boot into a 4.2 based rom I can still see everything. The only thing you'll need to remember, if you're on a 4.1.2 rom, and you download something, and it puts it in the sdcard/download folder, move it to the sdcard/0/download folder otherwise the newer roms won't see it.
Hope that wasn't too confusing, it's a bit hard to explain sometimes. If you have anymore questions, shoot me a pm or respond here and I'll see if I can clear it up.
The 0 folder is so annoying hehe

Where are my files?

Hello,
I was on Hyperdrive rom, love it, and all my files were there far as Photos, Wallpaper, etc... when I load other roms they are there, but recently I updated my boot loader and now I don't see none of my files. Its like they system got wiped. But when I go to recovery to load another rom I see all my files in the directory, even my rom zip files.
When I pick either "illusions" or "MIUI" I don't see none of my files. Could it be the boot loader that I installed? Do I have load every single photo, wallpaper, and music again? won't it be duplicates if I do?
I'm going to install the "Hyperdrive" rom again, but it gets tiring loading all the apps from the market. But I'll do it just to see if I get the photos and etc....

Don't go to /sdcard. Go to /data/media. Then you'll see everything.
Ok, thanks. I'll look for it on there. I was on "illusion" then "miui" rom but I just gave up and switched over to "hyperdrive" there I can see all my files. But I will try again with the other roms.

thank you very much. So my best bet is to just stay with 4.2.2 once I make that leap from 4.1.2? I posted a comment on that thread regarding the transfer of files. I just want to be clear. I went back to 4.1.2 and so I'm basically transferring all my files to the "0" directory? You see I have a Mac so I have to have Airdroid, but I can get a HP laptop. So, I transfer all my files then format my ext sd card, then transfer my files back in the "0" directory and that's it? along with my 4.2.2 roms. then do the whole wiping thing to install a new rom?
If you do this before flashing 4.2.2 ypu msy end up with something like this /0/0/
I've seen where some have had 8 or more zero directories! Youll have to read more on that though as I don't know a lot about it.

If you d/l one of the 4.2/4.3 roms (AOSP or Sense) it will do the SD0 "file thing" If you want to find the original files you will need ROOT EXPLORER or other root browser and go to the ROOT directory then DATA>MEDIA. You should see all your familiar 4.1.2 files. If you go to DATA>MEDIA>0 that will be the "new" 4.2/4.3 directory. You can copy and paste files back and forth between the two directories or you can simply move them w/o copying.
If you get tired of 4.2/4.3 and want to go back to stock 4.1.2 here is what to do:
go to recovery and do a full wipe (DO NOT WIPE INTERNAL)
RESTORE your backup of 4.1.2 (or flash your 4.1.2 rom)
before booting into 4.1.2 (still in same recovery session) flash the FILE FIX
Hope that at least partially answered your question.
