[Q] Rooting and Flashing an already unlocked i747 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

My friend bought a i747(indicated from label beneath battery) that was already unlocked to work with TMobile. When I look at settings > about phone, it says the model number is T999 android 4.1.2. If I wanted to root it, do I follow TMobile or AT&T's procedures? and if I wanted to flash ROMs, do I use T999 or i747 roms?

Use the method for the i747 for rooting. You seem to have a T-Mobile Rom, but it is still an ATT phone. I'd say you are safer to stick with what the hardware says as opposed to software. As far as the roms go, I've not flashed a T-Mo rom myself, so I can not comment on the safety of that, though I think that you will need to flash an ATT modem or be sure that whichever T-Mo rom you flash does not include the modem as I believe the 2 are different.

The i747 label was on the phone itself.
We took another look at settings > about phone. Model number was SGH - T999 running android 4.1.2 with T999UVDMD5 baseband. CF-rooting method didn't have anything for AT&T with Android 4.1.2 so we decided to jump the gun and did the T-Mo method. Rooting went fine. We flashed the T-mo version of CM 10.1.2 and everything is working fine.

[Q] TMO GS3 : Will unlock go away if updated or installed 4.2.2 rom?

I've galaxy s3 for tmobile and it is currently on 4.1.1 T999UVDLJA.
I followed this method to unlock it and right now I am using the phone on H2OWireless (MVNO on AT&T network), everything is working fine (not tested data plan yet).

Now my question is if I upgrade the OS in future to say stock from TMO 4.1.2 (when they release) or non-stock 4.2.2 rom then will my unlock go away or it is factory unlocked now?

No, once your phone is unlocked it stays that way regardless of flashing any roms.
Flashing roms has no effect on the locked or unlocked status of the phone.
Even a OTA update has no effect on the locked or unlocked status of the phone.

Are you sure? Because this is different method than entering an unlocked provider by service provider. I just want to make sure before I step out of 4.1.1. And again it's possible to move back to stock right? Is there anything like iphone where you must have SHA BLOBS to get back to a specific version? I am an iphone guy and getting first time handson android phone litterally!
I tried getting one from tmobile but since I am not a tmobile customer the refused.

Yes you can go back to the stock rom by Odin flashing your phone at any time.
Doing that has no effect on the phone's locked or unlocked status.
Sorry I have no idea about the iphone's BLOBS

And if possible in your opinion which would be the best? (I know it's wide scope question but if you can help that would be great )

Here is a link for a lot of Tmobile custom roms. Any of the custom roms there will work with a
Tmobile S3 locked or unlocked phone or a AT&T S3 unlocked phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1645
My personal preference for custom rom is the "Wicked v9.1" rom.
In my opinion after flashing all other custom roms for Tmobile T999 phones the "Wicked v9.1"
custom rom is clearly the best rom which is currently available for our phones.
It's not only the most trouble free & reliable custom rom but cosmetically speaking it looks like a retail commercial product.
I would recommend that you flash that first, check out all it's features and options carefully then make a nandroid backup.
Here is the link to the Wicked v9.1 custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804260
After doing that flash a lot of the other roms which are available and check those out so you can have a better idea
as to what the differences are after doing a lot of comparing.
Good Luck!

Galaxy S4 ATT, install T-mobile Stock ROM?

I unlocked a Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 FROM ATT I am using Tmobile services.
My question is can I install a Stock ROM from TMobile instead of having the ATT one?
I like the Wifi Calling and Tethering option.
I can tell you... But I have a LOT of readers who want to know how to do what you have already done! How did you SIM unlock your SGH-I337? There is a published method for AT&T and TMo that seems to no longer work on the AT&T variant.
OK.. I won't hold you hostage, but I really would like to know!
For the flash to stock, just head over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267895
Follow the instructions and that will re-flash T-Mobile stock everything.

Yes. But also check this thread. The AT&T boot loader is locked and may require Loki Doki patch when you are done.

.... I may be wrong here, but since when has it been OK to Odin different carrier's stock .tars? Flashable CWM zips yes, but the bone stock tar with modem, baseband, etc?
Also, being that you have TMO service and an ATT device; flashing a TMO ROM with WiFi calling should work; just use an ATT kernel and the Loki patch. Personally, I'd flash the rooted stock MDL or a custom TouchWiz via CWM or whatever recovery you happen to use and not use Odin.

It is only OK to do when you know what you are doing. In this case the hardware is absolutely identical. You're not going to be using AT&Ts baseband firmware on the T-Mobile network are you? Good luck with that.

i have the i337 ATT and I am using a Tmobile sim card. Just youtube "unlock galaxy s4 AT&T". There are plenty of videos that use a secret menu to unlock the phone.
Free and instant
I also have AT&T i337 unlocked BUT
I also have AT&T i337 unlocked BUT when I try to use it with MetroPCS (same tower as T-Mobile - companies now merged) I can't get anything but Edge network where on my MetroPCS-supplied phone I get 4G (LTE only rarely) in the same areas. Edge network is ridiculous - can't even load a standard webpage- forget about watching a video! ookla =0.01mps!
So I have an unusable rooted, unlocked S4.
I've tried various APN settings to no avail... Thought I would try liquidsmooth ROM, or any ROM that works on both AT&T and T-Mobile... I assume T-Mobile /MetroPCS would react the same. And I am on a pay as you go plan that is similar to T-Mobile's s. I could easily switch to them if not...
Questions:
Has anyone any advice that could help?
Does anyone know if T-Mobile requires a "pairing" of sim card with phone's IMEI as MetroPCS does? (big pain in the butt)
I've done the same thing flashed roms, Modems, To my luck nothing, I did filing that since I repaired the imei, That is when the problem started. Also to does not tie imei to sims. Did you repair imei

Easy free Sim unlock
Just wanted to point out that if you know someone who has AT&T service they can unlock your phone for free My girlfriend did it for me on their website and it took 24 hours for them to send an email with the unlock code. Just thought i should share that. Up next getting this t-mobile rom onto my 32gb i337 at 4.4.2 with NB1. I hate everything AT&T and God is this phone bloated!

To be honest i can't answer your question. The phone i bought was from a guy who sold it to me out of eBay with a none working screen, he had the imei in the pics so i ran an imei blacklist check and it was clean. I asked him why he didn't fix it and said it was out of warranty so he just left it dead. I guess it was paid for but in his account so it was free for anyone to use but letting my girl do the unlock request worked so if you have a phone that's not blacklisted and you its not associated to an active account I guess it could be done. Try it, it's worth the try.

Very first post, not sure if I should have started a new thread. Anyway, I have an ATT S4 I337 with the MF3 baseband. It's rooted, region unlocked, and fully switched to t-mobile service using a method I found on youtube, which worked fairly well except had to modify two things (I can help if you're having trouble). Now I'd like to upgrade firmware (I'm still on 4.2.2). However, I have a lot of uncertainty because of all the changes I've made. If I temporarily unroot, who am I going to get updates from? Do I need TMO or ATT custom ROMs if I want custom (have they solved that bootloader issue yet?). Basically, what's the safest way to update firmware?
Thanks in advance

The above also omits that if you are on Android 4.3.X than the bootloader on your Samsung Galaxy S4 contains a bootloader restriction preventing any downgrade which means you would be unable to flash MDL (ie. M919UVUAMDL) since MDL is Android 4.2.2.
Does anyone know a way around this bootloader restriction thereby allowing a downgrade to 4.2.2?
att i337 to t-mob stock
Hi, Im pretty new to this firmware and different model numbers etc.. but here goes. I bought a samsung s4 on att i337 a few months ago off a friend. I paid an online company for the unlock code and received the code within 24 hours. The phone is now unlocked and I have a T-mob sim in it, i'm now looking to update the firmware to t-mobile 4.4.4. Can i download a t-mob stock rom for i337?? I'm worried that this might break the phone as everything I see for t-mob is SGH-M919. Should this matter now that the phone is unlocked?? Thanks
No, you need to use ATT firmware due to hardware differences (antenna/radio). Also as I recall ATT S4s have a locked bootloader meaning only safestrap compatible ROMs can be used, unless something changed since I had one last summer. Sold it, on Swappa, and bought a TMob version with unlocked boot loader and sim unlocked!

Hi! I am having major issues with my s4 i337 after switching from att to tmobile. The phone was unlocked so I took it upon myself to unlock it. It is unlocked but sometimes or rather most of the time does not pick up the network. When it does have data connection, it is Edge. I flashed the NC1 to root my phone, then reflashed to NJ4 (to unlock) but now nothing works. No wifi, camera fails, no multitasker, no voice assistant. Please help!!!!! I don't know what to do. I should have never unrooted it to unlock. I should have paid the $35 to get an unlock code. Can I fix this?

Ok so tell me please what you mean? Do you mean specific device hardware or ???
Because the only difference I see in the 2 phones, At&t S4 and T-Mobile S4 is all in the software for modem and rom. They are 100% identicle in hardware, even being factory set for bands both carriers use. I would never attempt this on Verizon or Sprint S$'s lol - but I am cinfused other than a different modem bin file and different rom, and different model number since its 2 diff companies, what is the difference?
I am confused.
If I cannot do what I noted, then how does one use an at&t phone on a t-mobile network? I am great at flashing modems, roms, recoveries - but my 1st time switching carriers on an exact same model phone. The phone itself is same model far as samsung makes it - only changes to different model when its branded at&t ot t-mobile and uses that companies rom and mode,m files. But isnt the hardware the exact same both places and couldn't the rom and modem files be swapped to allow it to work on the other one's system?
Please help what I need to do - if I cannot do what I asked about then what?

If the two phones ATT i337 and Tmobile M919 were as identical as you say they are and even use the same bands then
why is the gsm baseband (modem.bin) and the lte modem (non-hlos.bin) different enough not to be interchangeable?
Not even the STOCK 4.3 firmware or any of the zipfile custom roms here in xda are not identical enough
so we would not need to have two different and separate forums for these two phones.
First thing you need to do is to get your phone on the Tmobile network is to unlock it or have it unlocked.
Then you need to get a tmobile sim card and root the phone if it's not already rooted.
You will also need to flash cf-autoroot to root the phone and then flash a custom recovery like cwm or twrp.
Then last but not least you will need to flash a Tmobile custom rom from the Tmobile M919 forum.
None of the custom roms found here in xda contain modem.bin or hlos-bin images.
Those you already have in your phone will work fine even though they are NOT identical.
The two .bin images are setup so the two networks can establish GSM and LTE communications
between your phone and their towers using different bands and different frequencies.
Good luck.

I assumed the hardware is the same on both phones so just flash a tmobile modem lol - I learned I was wrong thanks for ur help. Years of rooting and never had an issue with using one carrier on another carrier's network, was my 1st time
Thanks a lot for your help. Its working great now!

I don't think so, ND8 is for L710, your model is probably S390 or S960
The FCCID for it is L710 I bricked it trying to flash it with dd though since Odin wouldnt work, need to get a 16gb sdcard for unbricking...

Under the battery it says L710? Because the TracPhone branded S3 is not L710
I'm aware of that, but it is a rebranded L710 , as made clear in the FCC ID

It's the S960L, but I remember back when I actually used an S3 I was able to convert my T999 to a I747 by flashing the ODIN package for it, it just seemed logical that since these were essentially the same device, (at least according to the US FCC) then they aboot should be interchangable

Well, the thing is as Straight Talk and TracFone failed to update the device to kitkat, so no Roms higher than CM10.2 can boot and function properly, so I was simply hoping that it could be converted to a L710 in a similar way how I can convert my dev edition M8 to GPe or the I747/T999 example I used before...

Only real issue I could see is that if ND8 flashed ok, but didn't work with your service, you would have no way to go back, as if you try to flash anything lower than ND8 after you have ND8, it's brick city

How to know the exact version or carrier because a custom ROM replaced it?

I747 sometimes restarts itself and gets stuck on the custom rom boot screen. I have tried multiple ROMs and multiple kernels by now but the problem persists. The only thing that gets it out is that I have to manually remove the battery and put it back in. Also sometimes the WiFi stops connecting and when I try to turn it off and on again, it gets stuck on "WiFi is turning on".
The only thing I want to do now is go back to the original firmware however the because I have a ROM installed, I don't know exactly what the VERSION (the version shown in the settings doesn't match any of these). I also don't remember the exact carrier. Can anyone help regarding this?
Did you make a nandroid backup before installing the custom ROM? If not, I suggest using ODIN to flash the stock NE4 firmware. You can find the NE4 4_file tar file thread in this forum.

No backup at all. I was also thinking of the Odin way however as I mentioned in the post, I can't find a version of the software that matches that on the phone. I also don't know the phone carrier (it is from Canada i747m with 2gb RAM, thats all I know). Is it okay to just do any version of the firmware or do I need a specific version?
Boot into download mode and confirm the model # there.

If it's an i747m then you need firmware for that model. Firmware for the i747 won't work on i747m.

If it's a Canadian i747m, it may be a Telus, Bell, Rogers, [email protected], or SaskTel phone. Check the back --- oh wait, Telus doesn't have custom backs (I have a S3 from Telus).
It doesn't matter what VERSION, it matters what MODEL it's for. I could flash CM10 and it would run, BUT it has to be for the EXACT SAME DEVICE! (d2can if you wanted to know.)
Rogers, Telus, bell, fido, Koodo all use the same stock base rom with slight customization for each carrier. You can install the rogers rom to a Telus phone and bell phone. I've done this many times.
