How is the sound from the new speakers? It was absolutely TERRIBLE on my Nexus 7 2012 as we all know. I am hoping it's far LOUDER and maybe even a little better quality?

They're pretty damn good man, really. Loud, crisp, I am very pleased with it.
A much better improvement over the old one!

Not quite as bass rich as the Kindle Fire HD, but pretty damned impressive.
Speaker Hissing Noise
I have noticed hissing noise from the speakers when playing back music at less than 25% volume.
Seems to go away once volume is set above 25%.
This hissing noise is not there when playing back through earbuds with the same volume levels.
Just wondering if anyone has noticed the same thing on theirs.

Yup mine has this. I am hoping for a kernel or some apps that can adjust the sound to fix this annoying issue.

i haven't noticed that...so thanks very much for pointing that out
sound is much improved over the 1st gen though. no need to "cup" the speakers at all.

Yes, see my post here with an excellent response from a pro audio engineer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383248
Though I don't get how it can be the preprocessing hardware if it still sounds good over headphones. Waiting to see if he responds to that question.
To me the total volume output seems about the same (since the 4.3 update my old 7 seems louder) but the new 7 has more depth. With my 7.1 the volume was all most non-existant until after 50%. On the 7.2 the volume is pretty good at 50%.

I'm not very happy with the headphone output. My iPad was significantly louder with the same headphones. Anyone have any recommendations for improvement? My HTC one is fantastic with headphones in.

It doesn't sound very good if you've heard the HTC One but compared to the OG Nexus 7 it's a large improvement.

Does anyone know if Google plans to increase the speaker volume with the next update? I know there are plenty of equalizer apps available, but since this is a common issue with the GN I am hoping google has acknowledged the sound is too low and will increase it without the need of us all to download an app.
Does anyone think the volume will be increased?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
You would hope so and I am also hoping they at least do something about it rather than having to use an EQ app to make the volume louder.
I don't see the volume being low at all. In fact its quite loud. Louder then the G2x and on par with the Rezound.
Maybe the LTE version has higher sound levels. Even review videos are confused by the audio problems. I dont know.
I do know that I'm running 4.0.3 and sound is the same. I don't think its official so this may change but for now....
Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 CM9
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver
Google already said a fix is coming. Let's hope they do it.
Maybe the LTE has higher sound level, but my GSM Galaxy Nexus has a very low volume level.

LTE 4.0.2 stock volume is weeeeeeeak. Coming from a Moto X which had phenomenal speaker though
Volume is low and its not for everything. On my LTE just seems to be default sounds for notifications. Music on both speaker and headphones is fine.
Volume+ free is enough at +3 for me to correct the notifications.
I find the volume to be quite low compared to my OG droid. I've loaded the old ringtones that i used on it onto my gnex and compared them side by side. The volume on the gnex is noticeably lower, but this is without volume+.
with the volume+ speaker modification on and the max vol set to +13 (that's as far as ive cared to go, as the speaker starts to crackle a bit) the volume still isnt much louder than it was. i know it sounds counter intuitive that the speaker crackles and the volume is low, because it does to me, too. it just makes me think that the speaker is weak. if that's the case, im not sure than they can do anything about it...
gnex lte - revo hd 2.1.2 (4.0.2)
Is it weak? I think the volume is loud enough, in European version at least.

Maybe you should try equalizer instead. My volume went up plenty loud with no crackle and it seems like this speaker is actually good quality they just goofed the volume.

I agree. Coming from my iPhone, I expected a quieter speaker as that thing is LOUD! That being said, next to my Droid X, my wife's Mytouch Slide, etc this thing is so quiet I cannot hear notifications at times.
I'm using volume+ at level 8...it helps, but I would say aside from battery life this is the only other shortcoming I've experienced with this device.
Even on 1 this 900 drops a **** ton of sound. Anyone else have the same problem? Podcasts, music, ringtones and notifications doesn't matter: it just booms.
yes. this phone has great volume. But after 15 it doesnt seem to get any louder on my phone.. for music at least..?
What I have noticed, I'd that the volume increments are very irregular on the external speaker, but much more consistent on Bluetooth, and wired headsets.

Yes when I had mine it was loud. It was a welcome change as most smart phones are not loud enough, but yes low volume setting was still loud.

Yeah going from 0 to 1 is like what going from 0 to 15 should be. They need to work on the lower volume range; it's basically an on/off switch at the moment. Annoying at times, but not a deal breaker IMO.
I love volume of my Lumia...its loud and clear....even though it keep it at 10-15 range most of the time...but its really good for very loud places too
I'm deaf in 1 ear...so it all sounds good to me. Though, I am trying to figure out what a ****ton is....
You will need these three apps
Voodoo LOUDER, speakerboost, and volume boost. All of which can be found in the play store or app store, whatever you call it. If you already brought Voodoo LOUDER like I did great! If not well you will needs it. For volume boost, there are two versions of the app, the 7 days trail version and the full paid version. Both work great but of coarse with the trail version you have 7 days of use. Spearkerboost is completely free by the way.
Step 1. Launch voodoo LOUDER, follow what the app tells you to do and once everything is set. Do the following.
Limit > Maximum Boost > +6 dB
Next got to slider set the volume to +6 dB.
Step 2. Launch volume boost go to setting and check Auto start.
Step 3. Launch speaketboost got setting > maximum allowed boost > 100% then check everything else on the settings screen.
Step 4. Play your music.
Issues:
The paid version of volume boost will seem to be low at first, simply lower the phone volume and bring it back up.
Speaketboost goes on and off sometimes.
Disclaimer: If you damage your ears, it wasn't my fault.
Is this really necessary? Is the sound that low for some of you? I didn't notice any issues for me on. AOSP or PA. Aren't you afraid you are going to blow your speaker with these extreme settings? I would be a little concerned.
I believe I experienced a little bit of an issue in Skype but I wasn't sure if it was Skype's issue. I have used some of these apps in the past but it would also boost ring tones which I am not to fond of. I currently use SpeakerBoost on a low setting and it seems to be fine for me.
Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Its really about the headphones not speakers. And yes for some of us its that low.

Indeed, I also found that the sound coming from the headset jack was too low for my tastes. Using Power Amp, there are settings (or rather a preamp) that allows for the volume to be increased but at the cost of major sound degradation. Bass becomes distorted, overall sound is blown out.
I'd be afraid that these apps might do the same? I wanted to try Voodoo sound on my last JB attempt but unfortunately the kernel wouldn't allow it.
I'm too cheap for the paid version...
while a workaround, it isnt a very good one, the sound out the headphones is very, very crappy. so crappy that i have been dealing with the low volume. you can say "is the sound out the headphone jack that big of an issue" but i didnt pay $150 for my headphones to listen to classical crap that would be best at low volumes.
thankfully i paid for power amp, which helps the issue a bit, but not much. by far the best music player for people who know how to tweak an equalizer

I'll take your jab as a playful one...
Regardless of your taste in music, all should be able to be played at ear melting levels without degradation of quality or distortion of sound. I think about all the clubs I've DJed over the past 12 years and how some of the best systems were the ones that didn't need sheer power to sound good. Clean sound is not necessarily loud sound.
That said, it remains that there is something in the way JB is talking to the audio chip that is not allowing for power AND clean sound to come through. This is why I've stuck with ICS running Power Amp. Until this issue can be fixed, I just can't use JB.
And if I'd paid $150 for some headphones, I'd be expecting some good, clean and LOUD sound as well...

Are you using the headphone jack to listen to music? I've tried it on 3 different music players, apollo, google music and double twist. They are all quiet. I can usually have my radio on 30 and its plenty loud but now I've got to turn it up to 40 (maxed out on my radio) and it still isn't loud enough. It doesn't help I have a loud car to begin with, borderline race car.
why not try ac!d audio technology .zip? works better than beats audio.. it actually has beats audio, sony xloud and other engines incorporated and sounds clean

This is something that I really mis from my s3 probably the thing I would pick if I could change one thing. The phone gets decently loud when playing music (and the quality is amazing) but in call volume I constantly wish it got louder and the same is true for the speaker phone while in call. I think even just alittle bit louder would make a huge difference since for me at max volume its right at the edge.
Anyone else feel the same? I cant be the only one and I have good hearing lol. Please someone fix this!
So far I am seeing my problems disappear one by one as mods come out (share button in blinkfeed, green battery now clear, 30 volume steps for games and music, ect)
That's odd... I find it too loud already just setting it up 2 steps below the middle level of the volume when in call.
Maybe you have a dud. I can hear mine at almost max volume just like a speakerphone on a cheap device. It really is quite amazing

IDK my dads HTC seems to exhibit the same behavior. I will test more to be sure but I doubt its hardware related since my speakers sounds strong with no distortion or anything.
I upgraded from a M7 and it appears the earpiece volume is lower. Anyone have a similar experience? Trying to determine if its just me... Thanks.
the m7 volume for the headphone is far superior to m8. I am using the player pro to play all my musics. The m7 sound is clear and crisp. however on the m8 I am not satisfy with the quality and volume of the m8. You can turn the volume all the way up and it would feel like something is missing. I wanted to return the m8 badly because of it. But then I tweak the EQ on Player pro and downloaded the virper4android and tweak the EQ on there also. Its still not as good as m7 but close to it. I still like my m8 because of the sd card but I wish the size would be between 4.3 or 4.7 inch. I'm using viperrom on both my m7 and m8.
Check and make sure that there isn't some kind of adaptive volume feature enabled for calls or something.
As far as audio quality, I think the M8 blows away my M7. Now, I have decent headphones, and they don't really need an EQ to sound how I like them to sound, so that may be different for other people. The M8 has been getting reviews raving about the audio quality though, and it has a thread over on Head-fi saying the same. The difference between the two is probably the beats vs boomsound EQ. If you like the m7 better, you probably just liked that "sound" more, which should be able to accomplish through software. The hardware itself is better though.
The speaker quality is great but for whatever reason the earpiece volume does seem very low.
Yea I didn't notice it myself until yesterday when I was walking the dog. It just wasn't loud enough for some reason. Call clarity is nice but the volume is missing a few steps
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
You guys think its low? I have to turn it down. The first time I made a call the other day I thought I was going to blow my ear drum, I have to set it around 50% while my M7 was always on max.
Sound is much better than the M7 all the way around in my eyes. Maybe its a ROM thing, I don't know if InsertCoin has tweaked the audio at all (if it has been tweaked, baadnewz hasn't said anything about it)
It seems like the first ring is loud then it tends to go down in volume regardless as to what it's set at mind you I'm still completely stock haven't even rooted this baby yet maybe a software update will fix this issue?

I'm not talking about the ringer. I'm talking about the earpiece when you are talking to someone and listening to them.
Test this,
I experienced this myself. I was talking with a friend and noticed very low volume. While talking, I tried to turn up the volume but no change. as soon as I moved the phone away from my ear and the screen turned on, I was then able to adjust volume. It seems, at least for me, that you can not change the incall volume while the phone is against your ear. Do a test call and try.

The M8 is so much better than the M7 in terms of sound quality and loudness.
If it doesn't sound like it for you, your unit must be bad... Or there's something wrong with your ears
My cousin's first unit from Verizon had something wrong with the speakers/amp and had to take it back. Sounded very distorted.

I noticed that the volume is higher on the left part of the speaker. Have you tried using the left part? If you listen to the right, it sounds low. The middle is louder, but the left part is the loudest.
