[Q] Worth rooting and flashing other ROM? - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

So I'm getting a new and sparkly Galaxy Note 8 in a few months for my birthday, and I do know how to root and flash.
I'm wondering if it would be worth it to flash a custom ROM onto the device, because the S-Pen relies on so many Samsung applications to be useful, with out the Samsung apps, the S-Pen is nothing but a small finger. (Except, would the proximity work with the S-Pen and jelly bean?)
I'm most definitely going to root my device and install my favourite apps that require root.
Could you please tell me if it's really worth doing, Thanks.
(Sorry for noob-ish post, I've only posted a few times)
[EDIT]: So I'm now thinking weather I should get the new nexus 7 over the note 8, I want the note 8 for it's spen abilities, but the new nexus 7 is an easy-to-root straight from Google device. Thoughts?

I'm rooted, but still on stock. In fact, I intend to stay on stock 4.1.2 because that way I can have cascading floating multi - windows which are just yummy!

I love my note 8.0 . rooted and installed civs reflex ROM. No problems for me, just lack of apps2sdcard.. So I can't get a lot of the good games. Other than that its perfect IMO. Nexus 7 seems just ok, this tablet (may sound weird) but my gf share the tablet by her using pinterest and I'd just watch YouTube or video player while she does that. Multitasking ftw

Buy the new Nexus 7 2013 (2gb ram) with android 4.3 . There is a universal issue with the galaxy note 8: screen momentary freezing, and no one know if it is hardware or software or if the next android update can fix it or not.

It is not hardware cause I've been on custom rom/kernel since day one and never experienced a screen freeze. Betting it will be fixed in future Samsung update.

Must agree, no problems running civs reflex ROM. I know the screen freezing issue because I've been on stock ROM and noticed it. It is very annoying.

I downloaded civ reflex rom last night and I am experiencing the same freezing issue as with the stock 4.1.2 firmware.
I have also flashed CM 10.1 and there were no screen freezing at all. But CM sucking too much battery, I reverted back touchwiz.
The civs rom was created based on stock samsung firmware so I think the bug on this rom is the same with the stock firmware.
I think Samsung will not put out 4.2.2 for the note 8, but instead it would be the 4.3 update, and this would take at least 5 or 6 more months.
I think I am gonna sell this one and buy a nexus 7 (2)

Are u sure u downloaded reflex and not flexbeam? Also I think u have to select his modified rom, if u don't u get the stock kernel. Perhaps I'm wrong, I can't remember my setup. I just know I'm on reflex and running his 2.2 kernel, no screen freeze. I really hated that screen freeze, wouldn't have rooted if it didn't have that!

I'm going to buy a Nexus 7 too, but for personal use, and I will keep the Note 8 for work. To me, they are too different and can't be used for the same purpose. I need the 8 inch screen and the s pen for work. And I need the smaller size and better than retina ppi for comfortably reading eBooks on it. (Having an affordable device with LTE that I can switch at will between Verizon, AT&T or T-mobile, is a nice bonus too!) The screen freezes on the Note 8 have not interfered with my work. But they are really really bugging me when I try to use it for anything other than taking notes.

I'll just keep mine or upgrade to the 32GB TMO version when it comes out. I'm guessing its the US Snapdragon version (compatible w/ AT&T & TMO) & we should be able to install it on ours w/o any issues. I'm all guessing here.

Why would anyone switch their gs4s to that? Can't aosp just be cooked up from that version? It'll deff be much more bug free then aosp at this point

I wonder now that there is a stock android build coming will cm for s4 be better since they will have the code specifically for this phone?
What's the advantages of this???
Now we got are devices fresh in hand and bam. They... release S4 stock.

You shouldn't feel bad about your purchase. I'm quite happy with mine so far (except the overheating issue lately).
I don't have the AOSP version yet, so I can't really speak of the features that are/aren't going to be there.
I'm guessing if they make it true stock Android, there will be no Samsung bloat at all.
So it's basically a much more powerful version than any Nexus phone will ever be,
and as such the price is quite high. Personally, I would not consider it at that price.
I'm happy with my T-Mo, and with a few customization here or there, I can always get stock.
This is really geared toward the hard-core Android fans/developers. You can't doubt the S4 has the best internal hardware
of any phone out there, and there lies possibilities.
I also heard the news from google I/O. Does this mean that this version of the S4 will be as open as a nexus and easy for developers to make their custom ROMs for it?

Sony basically did the same thing with the ZR, took complaints and made a new phone out of it
Just purchased a 600$ Ip57 phone? Well there's IP58 now! (Waterproof not resistant)
It's good to have options, but honestly most people that buy pure vanilla Android are experienced users. Most will have no clue rather it's Vanilla or not.
So there in lies the questions. Why put this out after and most that come here that have an s4 already hacked it to death no? So I don't see the point of the users here who want to upgrade to this when you just put a vanilla type ROM on it.

CM only has bugs on non aosp devices. Its just as stable as stock on my galaxy nexus. Having an aosp s4 will allow all the snapdragon s4's to have stable aosp.

Not true. my nexus 4 gets bugs every once in a while.
If the hardware is identical to the tmoble version then you should just be able to flash the image through Odin right? Seems kind of like the galaxy nexus where you flash takju from yakju or whatever and boom, you are getting the Google play version of updates, wallet functionality etc. If anything it says Samsung has opened their flagship to aosp right?
Even if you think $650 is too much this means that potentially, Samsung will get touch wiz updates to new versions faster as there will be nexus level compatibility with each new android update. I'm not saying immediate but they will have an inside track based on the fact that Google will actively update their device through AOSP for at least 2 years.

CM will always have bugs due to the way they change the Android coding. Where it is stable and great work people should never look for a bug free OS

[Q]2nd-Gen Nexus 7 Question..

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen,
Question: I'm strongly leaning towards picking up this 2nd-Gen Nexus 7 next week.. ( I have never owned the 1st-Gen ) and I know the 2nd-Gen is shipping with Android 4.3.. Since this is still Asus with upgraded internals, Will these 4.2.2 ROMS run on the 2nd-Gen? I know it's only a matter of time before 4.3 is ripped apart and reborn as Custom ROMS but I was curious if anyone thinks 4.2.2 would boot..
Thanks for any answers anyone can provide.. :good:
If these said ROMs were ported then maybe. Although I doubt it because 4.3 is better in pretty much every way so what's the point. 4.2.2 software made for the Tegra Nexus 7 won't boot on the newer architecture in the 2nd gen model (Snapdragon S4 CPU).

I think not. Wait for custom roms for the 7² to appear, which they will pretty soon I guess.
But you should definitely go for the new N7, it looks so much sweeter than the 1st gen...
direct ROM flashes Wont work, but if someone ported it over, I dont see why not. but that would probably take just as much time as it would to merge the features to 4.3 so no one will do it.

[Q] Bought SII with unstable ROM

Hi everyone!
After not being around for a while since my nexus 4 died I bought a samsung galaxy SII (SGH-T989) used.
The phone is rooted (I never rooted any phone before) and it has a 4.2.2 ROM that is unstable in my opinion. Apps continuously stop responding.
Im familiar using the recovery and changing roms.
So I need to know what ROM could I install in the phone? (4.2.2)

Look in developer area there is a plethora to choose from, try them all is what I recommend. You will find one you like, everyone has different tastes. But 4.2.2 I recommend my Hellybean from 20130801
Goodbye SII
Just for general statistics, I burned the MB of my one week old galaxy sII, can't even get it into download mode. It's a hard brick.
Thanks for all of your responses..

I brought this phone for the hardware not software. I never use the gimmick features anyway and to me the AOSP camera is good enough for me. Besides I cam from my note 2 and the difference between the note 2 on TW and the note 2 on CM was incredible. I cant wait to get CM on this baby.

I for one... am hopeful.
And this is why, I had the note 2, and am now on the note 3, Sammobile posted that 4.3 was being tested for note 2 as of 9/25/13 and all the leaked documents show that it should be released (on all carries) the end of this month or beginning of december
So, with the news that 4.4 is being tested for note 3, if (big if) they follow a similar time table, within 3 months we should have the update...
Again... this is being very hopeful. just my opinion. we will see what happens.

I have rooted/unlocked about 10 diff phones over the past 4yrs and would have agreed with you up until a short while ago. The AOSP camera is no where as great quality as a "stock" phone ever is. Reason being, the drivers are not open source. Now that I have a baby, the reason I went with the Note 3 is due to its amazing camera/camcorder, which will not even be remotely close on AOSP. Thats the reason why I will always stick with a TW ROM. I have xposed and other mods done, so its pretty much AOSP to me anyways.
I remember coming to XDA many moons ago to get fixes for my Ipaq 6513 - Windows mobile phone. There was no such thing as Android then. Those phones needs fixes like mad and XDA was here to work things out. I will only use a custom rom when the stock rom isn't up to par. That being said, I see no reason to apply a custom rom to the N3 or the N2. They were perfect out the box. CM is sorely lacking compared to TW.
Sammy may release a 4.4 update next month but I doubt T-Mobile will release it before March.
Note 2 Update will hit Dec. 2 for T-Mobile.
Rep said the same today.. I called for a question regarding a Wifi bug and all she pulled up was Kitkat update for Note 3.(it was unexpected) but she did say its in testing.

Agreed 100%. I hate the AOSP camera, it's the most basic, crappy, unintuitive thing I've ever used. I have a cat that I love to take pictures of(why yes, I AM single! lol) and every time I tried an AOSP rom on my N2 I found myself cursing the camera & searching for a decent alternative. Nothing beats the voice-controlled option-rich TW cam, as far as I'm concerned

No man not yet. They do have plans to.
It's true that the answer is a simple no. But I had to learn the hard way when I first jumped into this site a few years ago that people do not like to be asked questions that are easy to answer. You don't even have to look on this website. Simply look at the spec sheet on LG's website and you will see that it comes with 4.2 .2. There is already a rootkit out for the device but no roms at this time. I honestly don't think you need a newer version at this time. 4.2 .2 jelly bean does everything you need in my opinion. Otherwise get a Nexus device. I have a Nexus 4 running Kit Kat Paranoid Android and Franco kernel and I couldn't be happier. But when it comes to my tablet I just wanted for basic consumption and a stock Android is perfectly fine. Just my opinion.
