I have made a simple boot animation, but I can't get it to play the "part1" stuff. My desc.txt looks like this:
Code:
720 1280 24
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1
And there are 164 frames in the "part0" folder, which I want to play once, followed by looping the 24 frames in the "part1" folder until boot. That's a total of 188 frames, and I have them numbered all the way from 000-187 (000.png, 001.png, etc...). I have tried both continuous numbering, and starting over at 000 with the "part1" animation, but every time, I get the first 164 to play, and then black until boot. Am I doing something wrong here, or am I just missing something? I could split it up into more parts if that needs to be done, but I don't see why it should matter.
EDIT: Is it a problem if there isn't an empty line at the end of desc.txt?
The numbering in folder 1 should continue from folder 0. So if the last image in folder 0 is 112 then the first image in the next folder should be 113. Also make sure you add the images with no compression.
Send me a link when your done, I've been looking to use a new boot animation or if you just want my help I can fix it for you.

I actually got it working. It was because I forgot the empty line at the end of desc.txt
If you want to see it, flash NovaGen mmontuori, the dev over there, started using it

I was not sure where to post this, since it is about help making a Boot animation, but since it is a question, I felt the Q&A section is my best bet.
I want to make my own Boot animation, but rather than animated, I want to just make a short slide show. I have unzipped and looked at the frames in other boot animations, to get a rough idea, but need a little help. To make a slide show animation, would I just put duplicate pics in order, so they stay on screen for a desired time? If so, about how many frames cycle per second on a boot animation? What else besides compiling the images would I need to do to make the animation work?
Edit: This may be a little over my head, but I wanted to give it a try....
Anybody????
Is there anyone who has made a custom bootanimation that can offer a little help?
I've been working on a boot animation myself, I have yet to find an answer (I haven't asked) to this question I was going to just go with trial and error.
How many 'slides' are you going to use?
I would take the average number of frames you see in the other boot animations, divide it by your number and duplicate each slide by the result.
Anyway, if you find an answer to your question outside of this thread, please post it or shoot me a PM I would appreciate it.

I will probably just take an average time of the boot animation from a ROM, and determine the slide count from there. Having each slide up for 1 or 2 seconds. I know there is an additional file in the bootanimation zips that tells the phone how to show the animation. I didn't know if that has to be customized for the animation, or if I can re-use that file and just replace the image files.
Just open one up stick some pics in it and try to see if it works.

You must be talking about the desc file. It can be reused. It tells the animation how to act.
It will look something like this
480 800 30 (resolution....don't change...but the "30" is the fps...lower it to slow it down)
p 1 0 part0 (the 1 means loop one time, the 0 means 0 sec delay, part 0 is the folder)
p 0 0 part1 (the 1st 0 means infinite loop, 0 sec delay, part 1 folder)
so in this animation, part 0 would play 1 time then part 1 would loop until boot....all at 30 fps.
hope that helps.

If I am understanding this right, and PLEASE tell me if I am wrong. lol
If I want to use 5 frames and run for 5 seconds, I can change the 30 to 1, and each frame will show for 1 second. If I leave everything else alone, It will loop one time, showing each frame for 1 second, then go to the 2nd folder (Part1). If I just put one Frame in the part one folder, it will just show that one frame "on an infinate loop" until the phone comes on?
btw, Thanks for the info.
One more question, IF I wanted to use a short vid clip, is there a way to extract frames?
Correct you are. That was the example that I gave.....make sure and check the one that you are putting your files in though because it may not be the same. lol
No Prob.
I am sure there is a program that will extract pics from a vid......but I'm not sure what because I've never tried...sorry.
P.S. when you are rezipping the file, make sure that your zip prog is set to "store" and NOT "compress".
I also notice there is a Meta-inf file, which contains Cert.rsa, Cert.sf and Manifest.mf
Should I do anything with these files?
That is the signing file. If I remember correctly, you shouldn't have to resign a boot.....so no.....no need to mess with them.
I tried using a Flashable bootanimation zip for my trial. I unzipped, replaced the files, edited the text, changed the boot sound to the desired clip (renaming it the same), re-zipped making sure to set to store, not compress. I keep getting a "cant find update script" error.
Got it.... I tried using a regular bootanimation (non flashable) and installed with Pushboot.
Thanks for all the help. Now I just have to mess with the timing.
No problem....glad you got it.
Again, thanks for the help. Now I just have to figure out how to make a preview and upload it. The only thing that didn't come out quite right, but it still looks good, is I tried to set it up for landscape, and it still shows as portrait. I am assuming I would have to rotate the images to the right layout, and save them to the file that way.
I have made my own boot animation with two parts. The first part plays like it should but after that first play it just stops and does not continue to the second part (the second part is a loop see below).
-When I made them into a .zip archive I DID choose Store method.
This is my desc.txt:
480 800 15
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1
-P.S. I have already made sure that there were no Thumbs or DS files in any of these folders.
-P.S.S I have downloaded other boot animations and they work and have the same file structure.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

How large is the zip? cuz i tried to make one, and it was around 20 mb, apparently that is too big, according to someone i asked
Also make sure they are all the same file type/color depth, i've had problems where mine wouldn't play because I had mixed color depths where some files were rgb and others were indexed color.
Try to change 15 to 10 in the script to see if that helps. By changing the number of frames played per second, you can trim some frames out making the boot smaller. Before you trim try to change the script only.

Make sure when you go from the part0 to part1, the files stay in order. For example if your last picture in part0 is boot00050, the first file in part1 should be boot00051.
Thanks to everyone that wanted to help me! But I wound up just completely redoing it and it now runs fine. Still don't know what I did. Oh well got it now. Mods please close.

Hey there. I'm attempting to create my own bootanimation and get it working.
Thus far I've finished creating the animation itself. Everything is packed into bootanimation.zip correctly and I've installed the bootanimation to my Desire HD. Everything works great, it's installed ok and it plays on boot-up like it should, however it appears to only play at 10FPS as opposed to the 30FPS I've told it to play at in the desc.txt.
What I've noticed is that the desc.txt is modified/changed after I boot the phone up and the animation plays.
The original desc.txt when I install the bootanimation looks like this:
Code:
480 800 30
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1
However after booting up and playing for the first time, it changes to the following all by itself:
Code:
480 800 10
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1
I thought to myself "Alright, maybe bootanimations are just locked to 10fps."
I then had my friend test out the boot animation on his Droid X and it also seemed to play at 10fps, however desc.txt did not get modified on his device.
At this point I was pretty sure that bootanimations are locked to 10fps, but to be sure I downloaded a few other bootanimations and found some that also are set to 30fps in desc.txt. I installed these and tried them out and they seemed to play at the correct speed and desc.txt was NOT modified to 10fps in these bootanimations.
So my questions are:
A) Are boot animations locked to 10FPS?
B) If they are not, why could mine be playing at 10FPS and why is desc.txt being modified?
Any help is much appreciated - thanks in advance.

No boot animations are not locked to 10 frames per second, and ive neva heard of an instance of android modifying the desc.txt, thats really odd, is your boot a big file? Are you zipping the file with no compression?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Yup! Zipped with no compression and the animation has 362 images total.
Still need a little help with this~

I tried editing desc.txt before as well, it never saves. I recommend you extract the bootanimation.zip to your computer, edit desc.txt, then transfer back and see how it goes
Trying to put together a bootanimation and I can't get it to work no matter what I do.....I've got the files all in png format. I've created part0 and part1 folders though i do not need to use the part0 I have tried putting things in it and not but neither works......I have used notepad++ to create desc.txt file with 480 800 30, p 1 0 part0, p 0 0 part1 - text inside...on different lines...I've followed about 3 different methods of putting the zip file in to the system/media folder and it's not working at all....All I get is a black screen on startup :S well confused and getting a bit pissed off to be honest lol!!
If your getting a black start up screen then it is loading your bootanim. As when it fails to load a boot animation you get the stock "ANDROID" screen.
Are your PNG's in the correct format? Have you optimised them in any way? Correct size?
They're bang on the right size....haven't touched them but have had another idea that I'm going to try later on. I did a boot anim for a user and it worked perfectly first time so I'm going to keep going until I.can get it to work......
Thanks for your input at least I know its loading up....

Anyone know of a kernel I can use with my AT&T S3 - UCDLK3/Jelly Bean. I am looking for one that doesn't have modifications to WiFi/Bluetooth, and pretty much only allows for Boot Animations. I am using the latest Stock/Rooted ROM.

Unless you really just want a new kernel, the stock ATT kernel will allow custom boot animations with a few minor edits... this works for JB or ICS. Make backup copies of files just in case, or Nandroid but this is simple change, really.
in /system/bin, do the following:
1. delete samsungani
2. rename bootanimation to samsungani (the file, not a zip file)
You will need to edit the boot animation zip you want to use. Open with archiver of choice and navigate to the desc.txt file.
Change the 0 after the p in the second line to a 1. Here's an example in bold:
720 1280 30
p 1 0 part0
p 0 0 part1
change to:
720 1280 30
p 1 0 part0
p 1 0 part1
Save, and place in /system/media. Reboot. Profit.
Oh yeah, make sure perms are set (644) or it won't work.

Worked thanks Now need to change the startup audio.
Well I thought it worked, but I don't get the Animation I was expecting, but just a multi colored "X" which I think is the default Nexus boot animation?
Found the PowerOn.ogg file in /system/media/audio/ui folder. Renamed that to PowerOn.old and copied a wav file to same folder as PowerOn.ogg, works. Just can't get the bootanimation.zip file to load. Just the glowing "X" loads as the animation.
EDIT:
Using the above method just prevents the AT&T logo boot animation from running, and it defaults to /data/local/bootanimation.zip. I tried renaming that file, and copying the custom bootanimation.zip to /data/local, but that seemed to mess up my phone. It would boot, but the screen was blank, and then parts would become visible. Had to restore from a backup to get phone working again.
EDIT AGAIN:
Looks like one particular Boot Animation ZIP file is the culprit. I tried another and placed it in /data/local and it worked.
This mess up my phone all i get it is black screen even after i wait good 10 min. I had to restore nandroid backup..

Just saw this...black screen after boot is usually a perms issue. Double check all file perms before rebooting.
