[TUT] Permanently enable google hangous video calls over 3g/4g/lte - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

If you going to attempt install it, make phone backup in recovery first.
Your phone must be rooted!
This hack will permanently enable google hangouts video chat over non-wifi networks.
Basically it's the same as all other tutorials with modifying gtalk_vc_wifi_only entry in gservices.db except it enables it permanently.
Enable Video Chat over 3G/4G (GTalkEnabler) works only temporary.
Method 1 - automatic
Install attached modified GTalkEnabler
Method 2 - manual
You'll need SQLite Editor (or any other tool that can edit .db files)
1. open /data/data/com.google.android.gsf/databases/gservices.db (in SQLite it shows as Google Services Framework)
2. go to overrides (all other tutorials tell you to go to main section, but doing so only works temporary)
3. find gtalk_vc_wifi_only and change value to false. If there is none, then add a new entry
4. save changes and reboot

[EDIT]
I've modified original GTalkEnabler (see attachment) so it does the needed changes above and also added options to reboot phone or restart hangouts that doesn't require reboot (hopefully it won't break anything, if you going to try it, make sure you make backup in recovery)

Really? Bootloop after adding an entry into database? - this something new.
It works on CleanROM 4.9 and I find hard to believe that by adding an antry for hangouts in database would make a boot loop.
It must be something you did wrong.

O.k.. I don't need it so won't be trying it again. Been doing this too long to enter in something wrong!
I try stuff so I can let other people know about it. By the way I do have 2 GN2 so I can test on ONE, and the other stays working perfect! Not trying to rain on your thread but was just posting what just happened to ME!!:banghead:
Just my 2¢®

Can you try changing this entry in main section instead of override ?

I downloaded some app from the playstore called gtalkvideoenabler (or something similar) that does basically that. This is on gtalk and not hangout, so I dunno if it still applies.

That app modifies entry inside "main" section of that database, so it basically only a temporary solution. After you turn on/off wifi several times you have to use that app again to re-enable it and reboot the phone. Very inconvenient.
Also, worth mention, this restriction doesn't exist on T-Mob network, it's damn ATT blocking it, or making google block it (just tested T-Mob GS3 on with ATT sim and it didn't work, so it's not the phone related restriction).

This worked great for me on the latest Beanstalk.

Works great on rooted stock, 4g and wifi.

But it's safer, you don't need to download any sql editor, and the last time i restarted my phone was probably a few months back. Hardly an inconvenient since my phone is not some laggy POS where I have to restart daily.

True, it is safer, but I disagree about "hardly an inconvenient". See, if you use hangouts a lot it is very unpredictable when it allows you use data connection and when it doesn't. And if you turn on/off wifi several times a day, you'd be restarting your phone several time a day to enable video chat via data connection - IMHO this is beyond inconvenience.
Personally I use hangouts because I don't have to worry about installing/starting other apps (skype), it's already there weather I want it or not and doesn't waste much resources if any. (skype for example uses 0.18% CPU about every other second by just sitting on a background)
Fortunately for us, that app is open source, perhaps someone could figure out how to change it?

No bootloop on CR5.0, although haven't reached anybody successfully yet, nobody online. Hangouts is making call thou where before it would tell me only wifi possible.

I've attached a modified version of GTalkEnabler to the original post, hopefully it will work for these who got bootloops.

[APP][4.+][NFC] NFC Hotspot FREE -> the coolest way to connect your WiFi Hotspot!

While still waiting for my Nexus 7 (not sure if I will get one before the official european start .......) I imagined that I will use the Android Hotspot feature a lot to connect the Nexus 7 to my phone for tethering .....
So I was searching a pragmaticall way to open a WiFi Hotspot on my Galaxy S3 and connect the Nexus 7....
And I found probably the coolest way ......:laugh::laugh:
Just BEAM your WiFi Configuration from one NFC device to another ...
(.... and open the Hotspot automatically and connet the WiFi- network automatically on the receiving device ....and add an Hotspot tag option for people with only one NFC Device and... and... and ....)
The implementation was a pain, but I finished it yesterday

My new app NFC Hotspot
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.widgapp.NFC_Hotspot_FREE was released a couple of hours ago within the Google Playstore ....
I know the US carrier have some issues with WiFi hotspots and tethering, but check it out ....
It´s the initial release, so I would expect some issues/ bugs (especially with some carrier brandet roms) ... works perfect with my NFC testing devices ...., but again, not tested by myself on the Nexus 7 --> Feedback highly welcome !
******For Android BEAM feature, you need 2 NFC devices !*********
Known Issues:
- Hotspot doesn´t open on some HTC device with some (stock) firmware versions!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Change log:
Version 1.3: Improved beaming and tag writing + fixes for Android 4.3 issues
Version 1.2: Improved performance and minor bugfixes
Version 1.1: Added toggle option and some minor bugfixes
Version 1.0: Initial Release!
Be aware that this is some kind of sparetime/ hobby project ....mainly to test / demonstrate a cool NFC feature ...It´s stable, but don´t expect any eye candy or lot´s of new features or additional development

Will give it a go, do I need to install it on my Phone, My Tablet or Both?
Just tried it, installed it on both my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 - Works great!
Would be good if you could tap them together again to de-activate the WiFi tethering and go back to previous state?
Good work mate!!
PS I love the description drawings!!

The on/off toggling is no problem, I think I will add a additional setting ....as default behavior you will run into issues with toogling when you want to connect more than 1 device (not sure if anyone is out there with more than 2 NFC devices yet ) ... and I have one or two additional ideas to make it even more fun ....so I think the next feature update (not bugfixing) will come with a toggle option ....

btw. you don´t need a Nexus 7 ... works with every NFC device ... and you even don´t have to BEAM ... --> write a Hotspot tag (the little tag symbol in the action bar ... between "?" and "PRO") ... stick it to your laptop .... and every time you tab your phone against the tag on the laptop it opens a hotspot ....or connect to the specified Wlan ...(you can select if the device should react as sender or receiver via setting)

Hi. For those of us who have to deal with the US carriers would it be possible to add an option to choose the hot spot app (such as wifi tether)
Great work.

This is great, using it right now with my nexus hooked up to my one x did have to wave my phone around a bit as I forgot the NFC is near the battery area heheheh.
Pro version purchased in support of the dev! Just a small suggestion or personal idea - any thoughts on maybe giving it a more minimal look jelly bean settings menu style? Or just a little more polished look?
Early days I'm aware but this is a great app imo and should look the part
Buy it folks!

What a great idea. I'm gonna give this a try later.
Just loaded it up on the gnex and the n7 and it works like a charm. Nice work!
Forgive me. Installed on both Nexus 7 and Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
Beam and NFC enabled on both devices.
app opened on both devices.
Touch backs and nothing happens.
Do I need to turn on WiFi hotspot on Galaxy Nexus first? ......or is this app supposed to actually do that?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Xparent SkyBlue Tapatalk 2
You only have to open the app on your galaxy Nexus..(but you can open it on both, doesn't matter) ... Then tap the two device together... You should hear the "nfc" sound.... Then tap on your galaxy Nexus the "touch to beam" symbol.... And that's it....
Hotspot opens automatically on galaxy Nexus... Nexus 7 automatically connects to the Hotspot... At least, it should work this way

[APP][ROOT][BETA] ButtonLED

New thread with updated ButtonLED.
Everything below this point is outdated.
Hey guys,
I've been fiddling around Tasker for the last few weeks and finally decided to create a fully functional app using it.
At this point, some of you will be thinking "Another useless, ugly, cluttered Tasker created app that does something nobody needs".
Well, then, I'll try to prove you wrong
Note: You do not need Tasker to use the app.
App Description:
ButtonLED is similar to NoLED: it allows you to have LED like notifications without actually having the LED light. However, NoLED uses uses your screen; ButtonLED only uses the hardware buttons' backlight (your screen stays off). It's customizable to an extent, with more to come depending on feedback and suggestions.
Features:
Pause for some user defined time on proximity (e.g. if phone is turned down, or is in your pocket);
Turn button backlight for X seconds, then off for Y seconds;
Should work on all devices since the user can locate the brightness file;
Notification exceptions (e.g. to ignore all notification that contain "Hello", add *Hello* to the exception list)
Logs
Compatibility:
It should work on all rooted devices. It will work out of the box (once you open it) for Samsung Galaxy Ace i devices (Galaxy Ace users will probably need to locate the brightness file), which is why I'm choosing to offer it for testing here. I'll release it in the Android Apps and Games section if the reviews are favorable. If not, I'll take their content into consideration and improve it before release it there.
Running the app:
Install, open, enable in accessibility. Done. You may need to select a different brightness file.
You may also want to customize the options.
On the Galaxy Ace i, the brightness file is located at:
/sys/devices/platform/bcm21553-leds/leds/button-backlight/brightness

Optional permanent notification.
Option to use flashlight instead of the hard buttons' LED light.

Other minor modifications and fixes.

I'm not sure. It might be because it's not compatible with JB. Didn't think this would be an issue first, since our devices only support GB. Forgot about the regular Ace's custom ROMs.

Should be fixed in v1.1. Actually, it shouldn't be happening in v1.0 since I've already included a quick check that resets the brightness to 0, but I altered a few things in v1.1 that should make it fail proof.

I'll upload it as soon as I can, probably in the next 24 hours.

Also, if you think it's read to be released in the general Android Apps and Games section, please say so.
I'll get much more reviews, bug reports and suggestions there which will allow faster development if time allows it, but I don't want to release something unfinished there.

About the camera LED, just to make sure:
Open ButtonLED;
Select "Use flashlight ...";
Press the "✓" button;
Select "Test ButtonLED". Your flashlight should turn on and off.
If it doesn't work, and if you have Tasker (or if you can install the trial version), can you try creating a simple task that will turn the "Torch" on then off? Just to make sure that Tasker feature is compatible with your phone (the documentation says it's not compatible with all phones).
Regarding the battery, I don't see why that would happen, unless you left your phone with ButtonLED active for those five hours (when I say active, I mean turning your LED on and off), especially that nothing, battery wise, has changed from v1.0 to v1.1.
Did you flash a new ROM lately? If so, try recalibrating your battery.
For the logs, what exactly do you mean when you say they don't work?
Are they inaccurate? In that case, I fixed it in v1.2. It was a slight issue causing skipped notifications to be displayed as "processed" in the logs (e.g. if your screen is on, ButtonLED will skip a notification; v1.1 will mark it as processed in the logs, tho).
If it's something else (e.g. logs not showing up, some other issue), please specify.
Thanks for the reports
Ok..thank you so much ..

I just remembered that pushing the app using adb should give you more information about why the installation failed, so please try that.
Hi, I found this app on Tasker groups (thanks to the author)
However on my device (galaxy s2 with cyanogen10) I have no /sys/devices/platform/*-leds/leds/ and on tasker Set Light says it's not available on my device...
It's a ROM problem I suppose, because keys backlight are present (as hardware) and supported by the ROM (they turn on and there is an option to use or not use them!). Should I ask to cyanogen developers?
again thanks

Yeah, it's probably hidden somewhere else.
Did some googling and found that for the One X (running CM10), it's /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/currents
Other users say that /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/brightness works instead.
So you could also try looking for something similar.

Is there any sort of breakdown sheet on what some of these things do exactly? Some of them i wouldnt know exactly what changes they would be making by chaing from true to false or visa versus.

That is a flashable zip. To install it you must be rooted, reboot to recovery and select install from zip. Then navigate to the directory you have the zip downloaded and select and flash it.
Otherwise again you will need to be rooted, and using a root file explorer you will need to manually modify the build.prop and/or feature.xml .
If you haven't rooted your device yet, there is a thread under general on how to root which has a youtube walk through which makes it very easy.
Hope this helps.

Thank you! So glad I can mute the camera now!
I've only changed the feature.xml setting for the contact reject list menu, it works, but made my stock email app inverted. I like it, so I'm not complaining, just giving a heads up. I think it is a side effect of modifying the file using Es file explorer on the phone. Stock, rooted, deodexed, stock kernel.

is there a mod to restore burst mode functionality like it is on the S3?
On my S3 Burst is its own mode and it does the AI Servo mode for focus (continious all the time adjusting auto focus) and when I press and hold the button BOOM it starts snapping pics.
the Note 2 is AGGRAVATINGLY different to the point where it won't work for what I need that burst mode for (shooting rockets)
in the note 2 there is no more "burst" mode instead its part of regular mode.
now if I sit their AI Focus works fine tap the button BAM instant shot BUT if I HOLD the button it does NOTHING first it does brand new full auto focus sequence AND THEN it starts the burst.
thats a huge problem when your "subject" is going to "poof" suddenly at 600mph ie it defeats the whole point of their "zero lag" improvements.
anyway to defeat that? to reenable burst as its own option with the ai driven focus and zero lag?
You might be able to try pulling the camera all from the s iii, I could be terribly wrong, but our cameras could be very similar.

DashClock Sleep Extension for CM/AOSP based ROMs

So, I had an idea this afternoon that it would be convenient, if you are a DashClock Widget user, to be able to put your phone to sleep via a DashClock extension. If possible, this would help reduce wear and tear on the power button, and allow you to put the phone to sleep quicker than other options.
I turn the screen on to check various statuses using dashclock, and frequently just need to put it back to sleep again, so something like this, I thought, would be nice to have, as it allows me to more quickly / conveniently put the phone back to sleep after checking, without having to use the power button.
The problem is, Google does not expose the PowerManger "goToSleep" method to non-system apps for security reasons.
However, if we have root, I can make it a system app by signing it with CM keys, in order to be granted the necessary permissions to pull it off. This is why this is a CM/AOSP specific "system app" extension. I'm not sure if it will work on other non-CM based ROM as a result, but if you'd like to try, please do so and report back. If the extension doesn't appear after flashing, or it force closes upon clicking, this indicates it is not compatible with your ROM.
If interested in using, this is what you will see once installing:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Attached is a signed zip to flash via recovery (since it needs to be pushed to /system/app).
Figured others may find it useful as well, so thought I'd share.

Ah, didn't think about that, as I don't use a pattern lock.
This is a limitation of how DashClock extensions work. Since the original "intent" (no pun intended) is to click an extension, for which DashClock unlocks the screen and it takes you to the particular app (email, weather, etc), all you can pass to the DashClock API in an intent to launch a particular app, activity, etc.
I'm assuming the same happens for you when clicking any other DashClock extension when having a pattern / pin unlock in place?
I can't put the phone directly to sleep as a result, but rather, have to instruct DashClock to launch an intent (which then unlocks the screen), and the intent issues the goToSleep method. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way around it, given DashClock's primary purpose for extensions.

Interesting.
I wanted to hedge my bets and play it safe by assuming only CM. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm guessing in light of this, that perhaps any non-stock ROM (AOSP based) ROM that shares similar keys may work.
If you attempt to install, and you simply don't see the extension listed in DashClock, or it force closes when clicking, this is most likely a result of lack of permissions to execute.
If anyone tries running on any other ROMs, please report back, and I'll update the OP.

I made it :laugh:
For some reason, Nest continues to keep their API private, so that third parties can't easily interface with it, but I found some documentation out there where someone has reversed engineered much of the API calls.
Based on the documentation, I put together a little Nest DashClock extension to display various statuses as reported by my thermostat, which I think is pretty cool.

Wish I could. Given the API is private, I am using a PHP server the extension makes calls to, and the PHP server calls Nest, using my hard coded device ids, username, password, etc., which returns back to the phone some JSON formatted data to parse. So, right now, it's not "portable" in any way.
If I get a chance, I want to try and think of a way to make it more universal, but right now, it is very specific to my environment.

Wish I could. Given the API is private, I am using a PHP server the extension makes calls to, and the PHP server calls Nest, using my hard coded device ids, username, password, etc., which returns back to the phone some JSON formatted data to parse. So, right now, it's not "portable" in any way.

Completely understandable.
Thanks!
If anyone running AOKP and has tried this can let me know if it works, I'd like to compile a running list of known working ROMs.
Thanks!
JsChiSurf, How did you make your dashclock look that AWSOME Jellybean style?
- there is no line under the clock so the extensions becomes right under it.
- the clock is in the middle and not aligned to the left side.
You have to explain me how youve done that!
Thank you!!

Ha, funny thing is, the removed line is a by-product of the mod I did here for conditionally removing the clock when installing DashClock on the homescreen. Since it doesn't make sense to have the line when the clock is gone, I just removed the line all together.
The clock being centered is just an option in the 'Advanced' settings for DashClock directly.
So what should i do to remove the line? ( No contact for the extension you made in this threade) , do i have to still download your mod?
Thanks so much!
Very nice. You should upload it to the play store. You'll get a million downloads.
I wish I didn't have to swipe it to unlock it when the clock is minimized.

Unfortunately, since this has to be a system app, it's not something that can be put on the play store.

Unfortunately, I can't override the behavior of DashClock itself, and since this is what it does for all extensions, I don't have the ability to do anything different for the sleep extension (though I wish I could).

Could anybody please test if Calls Recall app (= free) works with Nexus 5x?

Hi,
One of my favorite free apps on my galaxy S4 is "Calls Recall" which allows for automatic recording of all calls in and out without any beeps or fees. I mainly use it to not forget details when calling a store so i don't have to write stuff down.
Now I consider buying the Nexus 5x but would first want to know if that app works on it, so would anybody be so kind to just try it out. It's a simple free install.
To find the app just google "calls recall app" (as new user i can't post external links apparently). Just the regular free version, not the Pro version which you may also find. Just do a phone call with somebody (or let somebody call you) and see if it records fine and how good the quality is of you and the other person. The only special setting (wrench top right) is "record from LINE" on or off. Let me know if this works with LINE on which normally gives better quality on both sides.
Thanks alot to anybody who could test this for me. Maybe the app is also useful to you.
PS. aside from this app, any other (free) call recorder apps you know which record all calls in and out automatically without any annoying beeps or having to pay fees or anything. Thanks again.
Nobody can help with this?
Most people don't use it due to the legal issues that change from place to place. An example is that call recording is legal where my brother lives but not where I do so if he records my call without my permission (before anything is said) then I could have him arrested.

Hello. The app doesn't work. In fact, no recording app works with nexus 5x or 6p, as it does on samsung or lg generic phones. There are some apps which promises you that they work on nexus phones, but the recording is very bad and inconsistent, meaning that sometimes it works (bad), sometimes not at all.

This app actually does works on the Galaxy S4! Can you give the latest version a try on the nexus 5x please and see if it works? You can find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eupheme.callrecorder Please let me know how it goes and make sure to try with "record from LINE" on or off in the settings. That's the only setting you might need to change.

The app works on the s4 because they use the same kernel as they do in the EU devices that has call recording built in. Call recording needs to be added to the kernel.

I actually live in Europe (Belgium). Are you saying that EU models of the Nexus 5x should work with the recording app and US models don't?

No Im saying that Samsung has long had call recording built into their version of android. These devices are only released in EU as in the states call recording is on the verge of illegal depending on where you are. As google is a US based company call recording is never built into their kernels. So what Im saying is that if you want it to work on the nexus you will have to make a custom kernel with it enabled.
On the homepage of this apps they say: "Calls Recall supports Android 2.3.4+. It will run if your phone meets this requirement."
So if you have a recent android version it should work apparently.
Nobody here who has a Nexus 5x and could give it a go? It will only take a couple of minutes.

You cant believe those in the least. The first give away is the android version. There was no official 2.3.4 version issued on devices. The only devices that ran that were Asian knock off devices.
You can search for the info and see that it needs to be built into the kernel.
Most here dont mess with call recording due to legal issues.
When using speakerphone during a call, should that allow you to record both sides or not? Just wondering. BTW, where i live recording calls is legal.
Otherwise i guess i'd have to root it. I haven't done this before. I found info about how to root but then you need to install a specific rom for this to work so what do i look for? Thanks again for the help.

It's also not just about where you live. You have to take into account where the person your talking to lives. Like with me. It's legal where my brother is but not where I live so if he records my call I can have him arrested.

I'm pretty sure all he has to do is tell you the conversation is being recorded. Think about the last time you called any customer support. 'this call is being recorded for quality assurance' or some BS.

That depends on where you live. Yes he would have to tell them before the call even starts. Here they cant record any calls so I have to tell them where I live so they stop the recording.

The record from line feature doesn't work. With it turned off I think it will work.

Unless you live in Vermont and probably not even then, if you inform the person they are being recorded you are fine. See below.

Thanks for trying. When on speaker phone, does it record both sides and how is quality?
Also, did you get best result with "record from line" on or off (settings)? Thanks again.

Quality was OK on speaker. My side of the conversation sounded better than the other end though. It simply wouldn't work with record from line enabled.
Here is what it said.

I should also mention I'm on the Android N preview. Marshmallow may have different results.

It says "Failed to record". Was that with line enabled?
Also, i'm not sure if you used the app i was referring to. The interface looks different. To clarify, i was referring to this Calls Recall app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eupheme.callrecorder see also the 2 screenshots below. Is this the app you used as maybe there are different apps with similar names. Thanks again.
