I am sticking with the unrooted stock Rom for now. I am using an awesome, though not perfect, launcher called Next 3D Launcher.
Stock rom is what you would expect from a stock rom. Laggy at times but it could be my settings. The main reason why I am sticking with it is because of mixed results with rooting the MDL firmware. Users reported issues with WIFI and DATA connections. I can't seem to figure out whether these issues are due to rooting, MDL firmware, kernel, and noob mistakes. As soon as there is a unanimous confirmation of the main cause of these connections issues and a fix is posted I will be rooting.
The stock ROM, IMHO, is good enough and is perfect as a daily-driver. A lot of bloatwares and cannot be uninstalled.

I wasn't quoting a person, I was directing your attention to a page where you will find WiFi issues.
Anyway, I wished that I could debloat the stock Rom without rooting.
Rooting should not affect functionality of your phone. And then you can just flash an entire stock rom already debloated.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
This stock rom pisses me off...cuz its so damn solid I have little reason to flash others! I like the Google edition Roms, but the lack of WiFi calling on those keeps me coming back to this one. Rooted, using Nova, and I haven't had any major problems. Performance has been great, especially after the usual adjustments.

I tend to agree with you but, what you do after you achieve root is the start of when things get crazy. Sometimes we tend to abuse the freedom of removing and adding stuff and then your phone becomes an object with a character of its own. That's when we start wondering why we have problems while others do not. Yes we make our phones become individuals. They become like pets.

I am a longtime android user, own all nexus devices, etc.
My brother is thinking about making the jump from iPhone to an sgs3, should he stay on touchwiz or should I help him get a stable ROM on there? Maybe AOKP jellybean?
Suggestions and opinions/experiences appreciated.
I'd say stock for a bit then later aokp. Let him get a taste of both worlds...
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Agree. Flashing a frequently updated ROM might be a bit much for an iPhone user, and touchwiz is friendly enough!
I'd say stock w/ either Apex/Nova launcher
I say let him run stock, maybe if he wants a luncher on top of it, but if coming from iOS I would let him run TW fully there are some really cool features in TW that he will enjoy so much .
I say run stock for a few months, or until he is throughly annoyed by touch wiz. Then start flashing. Let him get used to how Android works, the menus, eyv before throwing custom stuff at him. If he doesn't know how it's SUPPOSED to work, he won't know when it DOESN'T work on a custom.
Personal opinion but no god awful touchwiz...and with the USSD bug goin around even more reason for me to never ever reccommend anyone use it
You say you have all the Nexus devices, so I'm assuming that means the Galaxy Nexus? How about letting him use your Nexus and you get an S3? That way he can get used to pure Android without having to root.

Aren't alot of features that come on the GSIII tied into TW? I haven't switched to AOKP on this phone but ran it on my GSII. There are things you have to give up by going AOKP or CM.

Like crap battery life, 26 hrs plus on AOKP. Lol. There are TW features that are missing (certain camera features come to mind). But to the point of the OP, if you haven't used TW much, you won't miss them. Yes, AOKP/CM10 are updated frequently, but you don't have to update unless you want to. If the build you are on is stable, battery life is great and you're happy, don't update. I flash every update, my wife is on an early August build. For a person new to the S3, I would stay stock for a month (30 day return policy). If they're happy, leave it alone. If the battery sucks, root it, load Titanium Backup, and kill all the S-crap and carrier bloat. It should be a learning process, done in steps. Android is fun and there are so many options, which (to me) is why it is better than IOS. Too many people rush into custom ROM's without acquiring the basic knowledge of how Android works.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
How many of you are using custom roms? Cm10? Just curious. I had it on my gs3, and pretty much loved it; however Im concerned about loosing some functionality on my note 2, ie. s-pen stuff.
Not me. No ROMs on this phone. Never will be. Stock Touchwiz 5 I'm in love with. So smooth and great battery life and all the spen magic I don't want to lose. Like cm10? Install apex or Nova launcher and you have 95% of the look. At this point, with this Touchwiz, CM/AOSP will take away more features that it would add.

I'm waiting for CM10 to be fully stable and hit nightlies before I flash.

On many phones I have stayed on stock for stability and feature set. In many cases when you go to another rom (especially AOSP) you lose TW features, S-Pen, etc... and in many cases I find not everything is 100%
That said the Note II development is fantastic. Many of the TW based roms give you everything you get with stock, but with more. AOSP you lose the TW feature set but it is amazingly stable and fast with a whole lot of other features.
With my S3 I could not find a single rom that I did not have problems on, but with the Note II I have a harder time deciding WHICH rom to use :good:

I agree with this guy. Even with my acer liquid mt when I rooted it and used the leaked gingerbread rom for it, the camera (which i use a lot got messed up and would over expose the pictures to white messes of garbage) and I noticed that after switching back to the normal stock rom with root, the camera would screw the video with red green and blue lines...gross I know...
And plus, just like my old ipod touch 2g (which doesnt work cuz the battery is dead. big surprise CRapple) it looked as normal as it should, but behind the curtain, the device was screaming at me to stop, every little tweak, hack, or anything I could do to the device. (Except install android on it because the project cut off 2Gs)
So what im saying is, its more fun to screw with the stock app.
Dont like the boatware?
Download a root app uninstaller.
Dont like anything about most devices?
Someone else doesnt like it either, and theyre smarter than you and figured out how to change that.

The same day I purchased my Note 2, I had it rooted and has TWRP installed on it. Day 2 I was flashing roms. I guess I just really like to tinker with my phones, because where was nothing wrong with stock!
C.FLAT, "I'm staying in stock to keep the slow motion video feature. And because CM 10's camera is really glitchy"
If you are that concerned with the camera features working why not flash a ROM like Scrosler's CLEAN ROM ATT SE. It made from ATT base. Completely stock without the bloatware. Everything works perfectly and you are not at the mercy of your carrier to recieve OTA's instead your at Scroslers lol. But seriously, I would much rather get/wait for updates from a DEV here on XDA (Where I can talk directly to the DEV and or people in the thread also using the ROM) instead of waiting for carriers to take forever and you can't directly talk to the team of people who made the Official ROM . So for me if you want stock look and feel with no bloatware and is more customizable than actual stock I would go with a ROM based or made from complete stock base. Just my 2 cents

For right now with the bootloader Knox issues, I'm sticking with 4.12 and using the the 4.3 MK7 radio. I've gone through them all and this
improved my signal and battery time significantly. More over, with this modem improvement, I've fallen in love again with my finely tuned
Jedi-x20 all over again. ptmr3, still my idol!!!
I also flashed the MK7 modem. Haven't really noticed a vast improvement..and it also didn't deliver some of my calls and went straight to vm. But hoping it makes a difference as its used more throughout the day. .
To all people having problems,
I personally had to flash the deodexed rom about 3 times before the problems got fixed. First time camera wasn't working but I read somewhere that when first on stock taker pictures and then update the kernel. Second it was super sluggish...barely moving. Third time everything worked fine and have yet to come across and problems.
Just remember to keep erasing cache and dalvik after every flash/step.

Man people, I'm sorry for all of you. I received it while using tweaked but could not flash it so I went back to stock image using Mobile odin and triangle away. After going complete stock I received the update again then went ahead and installed it using the stock recovery. I gave up root because I'm impatient and couldn't wait 24 hours until the rooted version came along and the only thing I miss is viper audio and cerebus. So I went the stock route and after it booted up, I signed in to my Google account and soon as the home screen came up I did a factory rest and haven't had 1 hiccup. The phone is fast as hell, the battery is about the same, my 4glte even seems faster than before when browsing using the stock browser, not chrome. The keyboard is great now as well as camera, and nothing bets the apps to sd. So in conclusion do a factory rest and forget about root IF you want all to run flawless. I'm sure there will be a way to regain root again. Happy flashing.......stock style.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try this and see if it fixes the freeze ups.
I'm currently on 4.3 stock rooted 0x0 flag. I'm curious about KK but heard about a HUGE flaw with apps not able to write to external sd card...Therefore rendering them practically useless.
I'm assuming I shouldn't update ota and instead flash. But what will I need? And has the sd card issue been fixed?
I'm just looking for something more stable and a little slicker. Would like to stay tw or stock/ stock debloated.

Since you haven't pulled the trigger yet, like me, I would hold off a little longer and wait to see what 4.4.3 brings us. It is just rumored right now but it is supposed to be a bug fix release. From what I have gathered, you really aren't missing anything big by not being on KitKat. I have had the itch to go ahead an upgrade too but I am going to wait to see when 4.4.3 is likely to hit us first.
in my humble opinion....
NO!!!!!!!!
So if I get any urges to want to change things up I should stay on 4.3?
I'm still debating breaking knox or not. I never plan to use knox and haven't decided if I plan to trade this in for jump or not. I'm loving the battery life and have no gripes but minor hiccups.

A lot of people are having problems with KK. If they have rooted, the SDcard issue is not one of them since there is a fix for it. if you don' t have root, then it is a problem with no fix.
I'm one of the minority. Rooted Stock 4.42 with no real issues. Battery is fine, SDcard is fine, WiFi is good etc...
Oh so those got it pre installed have issues but those who flash while rooted are fine.

I didn't say that.
I was rooted before on 4.43 however, keeping root was not an option when I did the update. I used Odin to flash 4.42 and re-rooted (triggered Knox), loaded the sdcard fix and loaded TWRP in the process.
I was not having any issues on 4.43 though. KK got me better battery usage and access to new software.
If you are rooted, you can apply the sdcard fix. If you are not rooted, I don't think there it's a fix for that.

Since you are still on 4.3, you can easily root using Kingo or de la vega method without triggering knox.
After that, upgrading to 4.4.2 is very easy and you still have root and warranty.
If you don't care about knox, then you can just update and use Chainfire to root 4.4.2 (knox warranty void). It is pretty simple.
I have 4.4.2, root (from my previous rooted 4.3) and warranty intact + SD fix and xposed mods. The phone is just amazing now.

The only issues I've heard due to the kitkat update are terrible battery life and the SD card issue. There's a flashable zip to fix the SD card issue and I believe installing the Foldermount app does some kind of fix. The battery life issue seems to be fixed after a simple factory reset, however, you'd have to root the device like others have stated. My phone runs great on KK. I'm getting awesome battery life and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever.
You can get improved battery life on 4.3 by removing bloat, and there's no need to apply a fix so you can use the sdcard normally. Is there any real improvement in 4.4.2?
Frank
After a week of hearing about the problems I just went ahead and upgraded why? Who doesn't like to have the newest? Plus there are fixes if your rooted. If not well maybe you are screwed but who wouldn't want to root? Been doing it since OG evo 4G

Does anyone have any issues recording video with KK? I updated the just the modem (running Slimkat) and can't record videos or sometimes can't play youtube videos in HD. It's not a rom issues. Might go to stock KK and than try reinstalling everything.

Funny, me too. I still have my og Evo 4g. Have you noticed any difference in battery life compared to 4.3? I have root and knox In-tact and apparently it's easy to upgrade...but I don't want worse battery life.

You won't have worse battery life bud. I'm pretty sure that will be rom and kernel related. Theirs like 4 to 5 kit Kat toms out their now. All good. All different, over in the international forum the rom that made me go to kitkat was XNOTE v11. Was a great rom but build international of course, hyperdrive is great one too good battery life I can't complain. Lean kernel will save the most battery

Alright I'll have to do some digging and find a flash able rom...and finish my root by breaking knox finally and flashing a recovery.
As easy as it makes things, I'm worried to break knox. Not because of warranty. Lol I know tmo doesn't give 2 ****s about root...
My concern is when I want to sell the device, maybe retaining knox flag will help increase the price point.
This phone is a powerhouse. Easily able to last for the next few years until EoD. Throw In the obvious office features and a still working knox (albeit being able to be reset at samsung warehouses (I'd cite the info but I'm not in front of my desktop)) who wouldn't want this phone for work?
Thoughts?

I did the same but I am having issues with my network sticking on the new baseband. Do you have any issues Mike ? I feel like my phone goes to 4G / 3G more then what it did before. LTE was working before I jump to KK. Also when I got phone calls before, my network would go from LTE to 4g on calls. Now it goes to 3G. What is going on ????
