Broken LCD/Digitizer, Need Data Off of Device - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys. SO, I recently dropped my Note II. The screen shattered, but was entirely responsive to touch input and functioned normally (besides shards of glass splintering into my fingers haha) I kept telling myself I would get it fixed "soon" and before I did, it dropped again. This time the screen was not displaying properly and no longer responded to touch except on the notification bar. I pulled the battery and restarted the phone. The screen is no longer lighting up or displaying anything but the phone still boots up as I can hear the startup sounds and flood of incoming text messages.
I previously rooted my phone, left the stock rom on....
Now my intent is to adb into the phone via laptop and usb. and making a "clockwork recovery style image" and then hopefully use an emulator to run the image to extract my data from it. Looking for any guidance or suggestions to get my data back from the device.
Any suggestions xda'ers?

This was looking like a good candidate, but I do not have any screen functionality on the device. If I had CWM instead of TWRP I might be able to guess at the volume buttons and hope I can flash the zip blindly.
Do you need to enable Terminal Emulator su on the device before connecting with adb?

Kies

How do you mean Kies? I have never used the app.

Not the app. Install it on your computer. I have known quite a few that have used the pc version of kies to pull data from their phones with no screen. I havent done it myself as I havent had the need yet. But goodluck.

I thought the kies app was just to do it over wifi?

You can connect a usb mouse + HDMI TV.

So I can push the Kies apk to my phone like installing any app using adb. Then I install Kies on my laptop and plug in my phone and then follow the prompts on screen on my laptop?

You download and install the pc version. You make sure the drivers are installed on your pc. You connect ypur phone to the computer through usb. You go through the menu on your pc to find a backup menu. You backup and pull what you need. No need for an app on the phone.

This is exactly what I wanted, but you say there is an adapter to plug in an HDMI cable and a mouse to use the device on a monitor with a keyboard and mouse!!!?? This is exactly what I had in mind from the get go. Where can I find these? On Newegg.com?

Kies was able to successfully backup my contacts for me. But how am I able to import them to a new phone. I expected the exported file to be in .vcf format. Well hoped, I expected this to happen. Also is there any desktop apps you are aware of to read the current text messages on the phone? Or rather, is their a GN2 emulator that can run using CWM recovery images to boot from? I would like to extract my bookmarks from my 3rd party browser and a couple other information from 3rd party apps.

I would like to recover my notes from noteeverything, encrypted database stored in internal memory of device. Bookmarks from Naked Browser, Bookmarks from Stock browser. My S Notes. All of my apps, their apks. I would like to also browse around my device and make sure I am not forgetting anything. If I knew of an emulator than ran CWM images that would suit all of my needs.

So I am not sure if it is just marketing, but would any/all hdmi mhl adapters work?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&Description=mhl+adapter+hdmi&N=-1&isNodeId=1
They mention compatibility with certain phones on each adapter.

Well in the meantime I have something that should help. And be useful when you get a replacement phone. Assuming you can boot the device into download mode, flash THIS in the PDA slot of odin. It will then automatically boot to TWRP recovery and do a nandroid backup of data. This will backup EVERYTHING in /data. You can then pull the backup to a pc via adb or windows explorer and extract what you want from it using 7zip. This will not only guarantee that you don't miss anything but as an added bonus you can just restore the nandroid to your new phone when you get it.
As for anything on internal storage, your best bet is hooking up to adb (preferably in recovery to avoid permission issues) and running adb pull /data/media/ or browsing the phone via windows explorer
EDIT: I noticed in your other thread that you aren't too skilled in the adb department. If need be I have a second copy of what I posted above with one addition. It will automatically copy the backup to your external sdcard after it's created. Let me know if you'd rather have that one instead.

It its on the internal memory I can browse it via windows explorer. But don't I also need the /system folder as well as data?
I wouldn't mind buying the adapter, it is only $5, where as a new screen is $190 + install. I am still unsure how I go about using a mouse on my device through the mhl adapter?
EDIT:
I notice that it is thru Bluetooth that you allow the device to have a mouse and keyboard. Hmm. I would not be able to force the pairing of a bluetooth keyboard/mouse would I? Without any device on-screen interaction...?
Also I was thinking I could use this toolkit to make a nandroid.

[SOLVED] Coming from an iPhone

I came from an iPhone 4 and I really liked how you could back up the phone and after you install a fresh OS you click"restore from backup" and it would put all the apps, passwords etc. back to exactly how you had it.... As far as I know theres nothing like that for android.
Does anyone know some apps or processes that would essentially do that before I root?
I'm pretty sure google already does that? the only difference is that you can do a complete wipe/clean install without a computer.. It's all in the cloud baby!

Yeah except I just got back to stock and none of my APPS or anything are there, and its done syncing
(EDIT Just my Apps showed up after Syncing my google voice account) No passwords or organization of homescreen... Too bad it didnt save that stuff
Sync will only back up the apps you had downloaded through market and will re-download them later on after a wipe if you so choose. As far as backing up passwords etc, a program such as Titanium Backup may work, but I know you can use ADB or terminal and go through the databases pulling files for each thing you want to keep, then pushing them after you have everything back up and running to get that specific data back on there.

Generally Google will backup your apps, and depending on which launcher you use, you can back other things up as well. For example Launcher Pro (or was it ADW?) let's you backup all homescreen and launcher settings to your SD card.
I'm not sure about passwords and etc.
When it comes to Android and complete backups, it seems like rooting the phone and performing a nandroid backup is the best way.

Hmmm doubting they have a mac version lol
I was wrong they have android SDK for mac hope ADB is there
Titanium Backup will do most of what you want. Install it, press menu go to Batch then run Backup of User Apps.
Then when you go to restore it all go back to Batch, then restore User Apps and Data.
It should restore all your apps + save games ^_^
Also make sure you have an SD card =P
Titanium Backup to do your backup, as has been said. You'll need to be rooted for that.
As for adb, see the guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685 . I'm still working on the guide, but there are some responses with links on how to get it working on the Mac.

There is no mac version...but what you can do is jump onto isohunt.com and grab a version of Parallels...and a windows iso..get everything set up with those two and you should be able to run adb in the virtual environment...YouTube is probably your best friend if you dont know how to do that...but its what i use...or just burn the windows iso and make a bootcamp partition...much more stable and reliable than a virtual machine

HELP! USB no longer works! Broke my phone!

I have an Xperia Arc S with rooted Sony ICS on it.
Please help! I can no longer get USB to work. I uninstalled some apps in Titanium Backup without backing up first (idiot) and I then installed a custom SystemUI.apk (bigger idiot). I rebooted and no longer have the bar at the top of the screen. If I connect the USB cable nothing happens! I want to do a repair but can't get Windows to see it!
EDIT: I plugged it into my laptop and it's detected and installed PC Companion. I am trying a repair right now. Hopefully it should be OK. :/

Thanks guys. I already followed that list before the mishap. Not sure if it was anything on that list that caused it. I think it was defo the systemUI.apk change. I was trying to get the facy taskbar with the enable/disable buttons on the Arc S (the APK is for the Arc which may be why it b0rked). I don't know why Windows on this PC decided not to recognise it but after a reboot it now detects it fine (But I have just repaired it and reinstalled all my apps + root).
I need to get CWM on it really (I'm a bit scaredy cat to hack the bootloader) so I can just do flashes from SD card. I think I will leave well enough alone for now though.
The apps I have backed up and uninstalled are Let's Golf. OfficeSuite. FUN&Downloads. Update Center. Wisepilot. Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited.
Are all of these safe to remove? I can do a restore if needed.
The other things running in the background that are bugging me are Custom settings. SecureClockService (what are these?) and CrashMonitor (Is it really OK to kill that?). Plus of course SIM service and Google services which I take it I need.
Maybe I should take this to that thread you pointed out to me.

could not use Android File Transfer while Kies was installed. Simply dragging the app folder (Kies) to the trash won't fix the problem either. You have to download and run the Kies installer package but choose UNINSTALL when it starts and it will clean everything up for you. (I suppose there is an agent or two for Kies that is sitting out there.)
After that, AFT works great. (remember to bump up your device lock timeout though or it will disconnect on you if it locks during a transfer!

Remove Bloatware from T-Mobile Note 2

I searched many various sites including this one to try and find the best and safest way to uninstall bloatware. I tried Titanium Pro and when I tried to Backup/Restore and selected an app to delete it then rebooted my Note 2. I looked back into B/R and found the item was still there. There was a message indicating that it may take 2 or 3 reboots to complete the uninstall.
I am looking for an app that will run and unistall all bloatware that is safe to use or gives you the option to select apps to unistall. I did download one which looked very good and even listed the apps it would uninstall. It was SuperNote2 DeBloatware which was a zip file. It would not unzip and I could not get it to unzip after numerous downloads.
Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I did find that posting yesterday and downloaded mrRobinson_Note_II_De_Bloater.v1.00.zip to my PC. When I unzipped this file I saw folders:
apps
assets
meta-inf
These folders dated back to 2/28/2008. So, I was very unsure to use this.
When I opened:
apps it contained: GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
Assets contained; common, fonts, icons, langs and themes.
Meta-inf contained: Com, Cert, Cert and manifest.
This just did not look right for what this was suppose to do. So, I left it.

You are using a custom recovery, aren't you? CWM or TWRP ... Just follow the instructions in the 1st post. Boot into recovery and select that file and click custom and either run the program or just look through the files that you can remove and exit if you don't want to use the program.
Or, you could just install a custom ROM and not have to worry about this?

That thread is quite old and if you noticed, somewhat inactive with some issues reported. I always use Titanium Backup to "freeze" apps - this usually removes them from being active (and thus saving CPU and battery) but they still remain should you want them. It's a simple and painless process as you are not really deleting them and they do not use much memory anyway.
Here's a great list for the Samsung Galaxy line of devices from Android Forums: http://androidforums.com/metropcs-cdma-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/695070-safe-apps-remove.html

I honestly suggest using a custom rom instead... there are lists out there of apps to remove but it is more based on whats safe to remove vs not safe... ultimately its all user dependant (ie what apps do you use vs what someone else uses)... for me, I love to just install either CM (as reliable and "bare" as any of the roms come) or Jedi roms via aroma (if you still want to hang on to the TouchWiz side of things)... Aroma installs allow you to choose the bloatware you want to have and disregard the ones you dont want... there are tons of tutorials online that take you step by step... make sure you follow the directions (completely) and happy flashing!!

Dont know if you are still in need of help trying to figure out how to flash roms but, you would first need to install a custom recovery. The two major recoveries are TWRP and CWM. They're on par. I used CWM for years but switched to TWRP. From there you first want to make a backup of your original rom and flash as many roms you want to try out. If you dont like the rom, just restore. I dont know how familiar you are with flashing roms but it takes like one try and you pretty much do the same thing over and over.

MTP USB Device?
I thought I was doing great after uninstalling bloatware. However, when I tried to connect my Note 2 to my PC via USB I received the error that MTP USB Device driver could not be loaded. Apparently I must have uninstalled something on my Note 2 that is not allowing me to connect to the PC via USB. I have been searching all day, downloading various Driver apps to no avail. I even downloaded and installed Samsung Drivers which also did not work.
It never ends. Fix one thing and then another pops up. LOL

I still can use my USB plug from NOTE 2 to my Flash Drive to get stuff transfered to/from Note2/PC.

I even downloaded and installed Samsung Drivers which also did not work.

can you reflash? I hope so! There is sitll a way to reflash from sd card thought and install stock f/w or if you could remember or figure out which apk is responsible for that function. ...
That latter option is why I started this

ps this is why its so important to make a backup in twrp or cwm....google it or find it here! they also call it a nandroid backup...VERY IMPORTANT for issues like this. As previsouly stated you should be able to put the stock rom (check out sammobile's web page for official f.w) on the sd card and from there you can boot into recovery mode and install it from there. I believe. If that don't work look into mobile odin which I have never used. sorry for he typos lazy!

Locked out

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.1 NOT rooted, my daughter played finger pass locked I out. then tried to enter pass and locked it up. I have tried every pass and nothing works, I have VERY important info, pictures and home movies that have not been backed up. Please any help would be awesome! I have to be at work in 3 hours. Can someone save me?
Well have you tryed using samsung kies 3 on your pc backup files and photos? Might not work since theres a password but might ass well give it a try! Your last resort would be rooting and doing a nandroid backup. I wouldnt go that far yet though. Have you tryed waiting and keep trying to put in the password.
Can't root cause I use Samsung allcast hub so I can mirror on my tv. I wait hours on and off trying to enter password. No kies didn't work

I'm not sure if this works as I haven't tested it with non-rooted devices, but can't you get access to your files via ADB ?
Kies/Windows won't let you access them because you can't get past the lockscreen.
If ADB finds your device, then maybe it's possible to get your files manually by opening a shell session to the device and get your files with adb pull.
I don't believe it needs to be rooted, but you do got to have the developers options enabled.
Merry Christmas and thank you for the help
