Battery life on mobile network while using the phone - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi guys,
I am on Jedi mind trick touchwiz Rom and was hoping it to increase battery life over aosp. I'm not seeing much improvement though.
The problem is that I am only on mobile network at work (no WiFi), and when I use the phone for maybe 1.5 hours in total, time to time, just browsing or messaging, the battery is down to maybe around 30 percent and the phone is very hot. The signal is decent (not good at some parts of the building) at the place. This is with Anker 2200mah Battery btw.
However, when I'm home and I use WiFi, and even with 1850mah stock battery, after browsing, paying games, messaging for about 2hours, my battery is at 57%.
I know that mobile network is supposed to drain battery but is there any app or tweak that can help to let me get some more juice out of the battery while on mobile network? I'm *not* talking about when the phone is on stand by. I already have 2X battery, but of course this app doesn't help when using the phone.
Sorry for the long post and please help me
Thanks!

[Q] battery back up ??

hey people how is battery back up of this phone...will it last more than one day on moderate usage ?? i use mobile for entertainment nly...rare calls..n txts
thanxx
Not really IMHO. I dont text or call at all in a normal day, but after 16 hours my phone is on 35-40%. YMMV, but I would never consider not charging my phone over night.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
everyones use is different. Don't expect amazing 1day+ if you plan to use your phone at all.
I'd definitely say you're going to be charging every night unless you buy an extended battery. As is the case for EVERY phone...
im able to get through the day with a little bit of juice left over on moderate usage
If by mobile entertainment you mean heavy browsing, video, and games? Then no...You'll be lucky to get 15 hours lol. I have an extended life battery and with moderate to light usage i get 20 hours maybe a a few more depending on the use and day. With my stock battery i was getting like 8-15 with moderate usage rarely more.
Well I am a very heavy user, on constantly in me tractor, internet usage, video etc, turn on at half 7am, battery will be dead by 11am-12, so not great. Running miui rom with battery calibration at 1ghz and screen off profile. Same as every truly multimedia phone.. need double strength battery badly but don't want double size batt!

Yes sounds about right, I got a 1900 mah battery and it works good, definitely extends life and I keep the stock one in my wallet just in case lol

[Q] Better battery life without JuiceDefender?

For those of you unfamiliar, JuiceDefender is a tool which toggles WiFi and Data when the phone is off, and turns on WiFi only when in a location where there's an accessible network. This software more than doubled my battery life on my Bionic, and so it was one of the first things installed on my phone.
I've noticed JuiceDefender has been sucking a fair amount of battery on ICS/GNex (usually 4% in the battery graph), so today, for an experiment, I uninstalled it for the day, and I've noticed that I've gotten better battery life than I ever have with the phone, across a mix of WiFi areas and 3G.
Has anybody else had this experience, or was this just an odd one-off situation? Could there have been a change in ICS which diminishes the need or hurts the usefulness of it?
I've had JuiceDefender off too and for me I seem to get slightly worse battery without JuiceDefender. Without JuiceDefender on I tend to get a steeper battery drain during idle times compared to leaving wifi and 3G on. I think the usefulness of it depends a lot on your usage habit and signal quality as well. I usually get spotty signals so that is probably why JD helps noticeably.
Interestingly though if you take a look at the battery graph in settings, every time JD toggles your data on it seems to force the phone into awake state, but just leaving data on would keep the phone in an idle state most of the time. That's definitely something that is making JD not as good as if should be.

Honestly I think the only time you get noticeable battery improvements with juice defender is with periods of no use. Which is why it works good for me, on work days that is

Totally agree with this.
That's odd, as for me, the phone is mostly in my pocket all day. Maybe it's because I've got a 15 minute synchronization time for most things?
Day three without JD, still getting twice the battery life that I was getting with it on. Delightful.
I don't like any Kind of app that claims IT saves battery life because it just doesn't work! Fact is that its just another apps that sucks resources out of your phone!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Going to have to disagree and while there are many variables juicedefender can offer big saves depending on your usage. I have had 1.6x increase as stated in the app and confirmed by the extra hours with the incredible. I am waiting to try it with the GN until I have a idea what battery life is without it. First week is useless anyways with a new device as you check it more often and the OS is still refining the battery meter.
Its all related to how you use your phone. Disabling Wifi, Data, BT and so on automatically, managing autosync saves battery. The app itself sucks almost no battery power - if i can believe my monitoring app (SystemPanel 1.1.1) which i use unfrequently to control app behaviour on my Galaxy S1 (with ICS and before that, on GB). Im taking up this "Old" posting because i have battery issues on ICS - almost half of the lifetime after upgrading from GB. But i think its because im now more playing around with the phone, no app is sucking more power than usual.
I noticed that JD cant control networking (via apn change) anymore, can somebody confirm that? If i turn the display on, my 3G/HSDPA connection is there - under GB it took 3-5 seconds until i had internet connectivity back.

Battery Life suggestion please

I get AMAZING battery life when I'm on wifi but terrible battery when I'm not. I send/receive about 300 texts a day easily and so I have the screen on frequently. I also use web a lot. On wifi my battery will last about 20-24 hours probably. Currently I'm at 67% on 6 hours. Without wifi, I will get about 8-10 hours with the same kind of usage.
I just want to know why there is such a large discrepancy. Im in NYC so my signal is pretty strong.
I used to think it was the screen that used up so much of my battery life but now I'm thinking it's the radio.
I'm on Juggernaut. If anyone has a suggestion I'm all for it. Should I try a different kernel? If so, which one?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
Jugs with dark x kernel works very well with me i use faux clock to clock it at 1.7 and 384 gettin 16-17 hours of battery life with lots if texting and browsing hope it works

So when you use your phone, do you not expect the battery life to go down? It can't stay at 100% after everything your doing..
I recommend Juice Defender. It turns off data when your screen is off. Sounds like you're getting a lot of screen off drain.

I do expect it to go down. Hence I thought it was normal until I noticed a huge difference in battery between being on 4g v. wifi and getting double the battery life while doing the same things.
I'm just wondering why the 4g takes that much more than my wifi and if a kernel would be an issue

The simplest explanation that I can come up with is twofold.
First 4G requires a MIMO type of connection, even on T-Mobile. So for the really high speed connection it actually uses more than 1 antenna and powering more than one antenna takes up more power.
The second part is that 4G connections are not as prevalent as 3G connections so your phone has to search for the closest 4G network more often to maintain the fastest connection and the network searching takes up even more data then than the MIMO style connection the phone uses for 4G.
The combination of these two will drain your battery much faster than a single antenna connection to your home wi-fi that does not have to pass as many syn/ack packets to maintain the connection as the 4G network and thus uses less energy.
(MIMO stands for multiple in, multiple out which means it uses more than one antenna for incoming and outgoing transmissions)
(Wirless-N is MIMO based as well but does need to use as many "discovery or syn/ack packets" to maintain the connection)
I second juice defender. You can configure it to turn off data while the screen is off which will not effect your ability to receive phone calls or text messages.

DISGUSTING battery life

Alright first of all, i want start off by saying that i LOVE this phone, both in terms of hardware and software, however, theres is a HUGE problem that i just can't get through and its the battery of this phone...
It is simply unbearable.
I have posted the screenshots. This screenshot is taken after 1 whole night of charging. In 5 hours or so time, I've use the music app for about 1 hour, talked on the phone for about 5-10min and sent about 10 text messages. I didn't do any web browsing/videos/gaming. I have also disabled LTE and turned my brightness to minimum with eco mode on. These small things drained my battery from 100% to less than 10% within 5 hours which i find to be completely unacceptable.
Last night, with me browsing the web on the bus for about an hour or so, it drained my battery from 85% to 3% by the time i got home...
I've looked at the battery life thread and it seems like im the only one experiencing this issue. Also not only does it drain SUPER fast, it takes a good 4 to 5 hours to recharge this thing. Which means it takes longer to charge than to use up even with minimal use...
Do I have a faulty phone and should I get it replaced???
Something's amiss. The only time that I've gotten less than 10 hours, is when I had my work email connection set up to "always connected" and wifi was turned on. Even then, I got 9+ hours of battery life.
Disabling lte is part of the problem. When the phone is in 3g, it uses fast dormancy which LG did not implement very well and it runs the CPU constantly. I encourage you to contact LG and your carrier and complain. don't let them tell you about background data or applications running the battery down. With the same apps running, this does not happen on lte. This can easily be verified by enabling debugging and then capturing a logcat from adb with lte both enabled and disabled. It will show fast dormancy trying to set network states every second. I spent a lot of time trying to get this issue recognized, but they kept saying that it had not been reported and was not a known issue. Let's make it a known issue so they will fix it.
How about actually showing us what you used instead of screen shots of %.... would be helpful...

I'm also getting about 5ish hours on a charge. And, when I recharge at the office with the usb cord, it's a "trickle charge" that's so slow it's ridiculous.

Yeah, I've been quite impressed with my battery life on this thing. I made it from 6:30am spent about 2 hours tweaking it and setting it up, then messed around with it through the day. By supper time I plugged it in and it was at 63%.
I don't have the phone, but right off the bat i'd say it was whatever was causing your mediaserver to go nuts. Either some media app, YouTube, gallery etc, wouldn't say its a faulty unit, just mediaserver gone rogue
And damn i want this phone...

Well, a little update to this thread, i've disabled every different kind of syncing possible and i've been able to pretty much double my battery life from before, which is a lot better but i still wouldn't consider this to be good battery life.
I've been reading many posts regarding battery life, and it seems like there is some issue within the software that prevents the phone from going into deep sleep which is causing the lack luster battery life. This issue is on both the optimus g and the nexus 4, so i hope the devs may look into this issue when they are building custom roms for these two devices!

I just got my optimus yesterday and had a full charge this morning. Been using it for almost 12 hours pretty steady. Have 16% battery left. I would say my battery is pretty amazing.

Get a replacement that's what I did with my first one. I was getting 6-7 hours with light use.
Got a replacements and was able to get 19_14 hours battery.
Also today I left my cell at home and it was unplugged at 100% after 9 hours I came home and saw it at 95%.

You definitely seem to have some weird issue's. My Optimus is great for battery life. My previous phone was an Xperia Arc and this has significantly better battery life without even running it in "eco mode". The only time I have noticed less then stellar battery life was when I had some app's running in the back ground that would keep refreshing/updating which kill's the battery.
Androids usage readings are inaccurate. Please consult this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
From what the picture shows I would guess its your 4G connection. A Hardware fault is improbable. And forget these things like "eco mode". Even if they underclock your cpu it won't give you a real benefit,
I've had great battery life on mine. Even when I've been geeking out on the device for several hours during the day.
Perhaps you are on the cusp of LTE coverage? If so, then the radio can kill your battery while looking for a signal.

I also have amazing battery life IMO, coming from a Galaxy S. I have no LTE in this area so am using only HSPA. Using the phone with casual use, I can easily go a full 24 hours on a charge. With very very heavy use I can go from 8 am till around 11 PM. I am very happy with the battery life overall. I'm running on "eco mode" FWIW.

Galaxy Nexus Horrible battery

hi guys,
sorry i'm noob and this is second time im posting on xda forum. I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus Made in korea by samsung. It's currently running on 4.3 latest update phone doesn't lagg or nothing happend like crashes etc but please see below major problems im facing.
Phone getting hotter from back side where camera is installed
0 to 100% it take 5-7 hours to charge ( I tried both wall and USB)
I charged the phone to 100% in night and i didn't use the phone night in morning when i check the phone the batter was at only 12% left. the phone eat all the battery in 7 hours the most battery was used by phone idle 57% and stand by 33% & i didn't put any sim card in the phone whole night and automatic wifi was on which was only 17% battery.
again i charged the phone to 100% close the automatic wifi and insert a sim card
The result is like
After 3 hours 57 mins battery was at 52%
Screen take 49% total screen on time 16m 1s
Phone Idle 22% 3h 41m 29s
cell stand by 10% 3h 54m 55s
Android system 5% (CPU TOTAL 1m 47s *** CPU foreground 33s *** Keep awake 1m 19s)
I don't know what was the battery time before 4.3 update becuz when i buy this set it came with 4.3 and i bought this 3 days ago. Is this a battery problem or the phone problem or its the android ???? any type of help is welcome
Thanks in advance
The Galaxy Nexus is known for its not so great battery. It also just depends on how you use it. If you are playing games, watching videos, etc. it will drain fast. If you just check a few things here and there, it will last longer. That's common sense. But yes, compared to other phones, the Galaxy Nexus sucks with battery. Theres not much you can really do software wise. The best thing you can do is get a bigger battery or a spare battery. I have a charger pretty much wherever I am so battery isnt an issue for me. But if you are someone who is on the move all day, I would suggest a spare or an extended battery.
EDIT: Actually, looking at your screen time, you are getting a bit above average on phone idle. Right now, my phone idle is at 8%

Yes i read that and i planned to get extended battery but the cell eating the battery while screen is off. I'm just confused about the OS 4.3 i read alot about that after updating to 4.3 nexus 7 user experiencing of slow charging and battery draining but as you seen in attached pic the phone eating battery without any usage the total on screen time is 6 min and in 3hrs 57 min 48% battery gone ?? so in your opinion what is the prob is it OS, phone or the battery ?

Well I see in your screenshots that it looks like you don't have any cell service. What could be happening is that your phone is constantly searching for a connection, which could eat up a lot of battery.

youre best bet if rooted and unlocked is to install a custon kernel and underclock it to about 1000 mhz ... install dark themed apps or theme chooser theme also us a black wallpaper .. turn off 4g . ... turn off nfc when not in use .. make sure youre using the oem charger to charge the battery .. use wifi whenever possible .. also turn off anything like hotword detection that is constantly listening

The mobile service was on but data service was disable i received 2 calls and some texts msgs 2 but they are not long or didn't took the battery. All syncs were off and location to. But the battery is going down very badly. Please see new attached files of last night. The cell was at 87% battery and in the morning the battery was dead.
Try using something like Better Battery Stats or GSAM and see what they say is draining your battery.
With the current info given, I would lean toward thinking it is a hardware issue. Perhaps your battery doesn't properly hold a charge anymore.

Few hours ago i left for office the cell was on 14% charging and turn-off the cell and put it in pocket. After 1 hour when i reach to office i was trying to turn on the cell but the battery was dead and then i put it on charging and it start from 6% and turned on. I think the battery is not holding charging . The battery is in made in Korea and have NFC details on it. I think its the original battery but its not use able any more. i will try above mentioned widgets before changing the battery.

4g/3g are off and i ticked use only 2G network. Facebook app is deleted brightness is set to auto GPS every thing is off but mobile consuming battery without any usage.... im just confuse about that its the hardware prob or i have to flash some other rom?
bump! any 1 with solution ?
U really need to get better battery stats. It will tell u specifically what wake locks r causing the problem. Idk if using only 2g is a good idea, u may be burning battery with apps constantly searching for a data connection. Can u access wifi? That takes up less battery than data (3g or 4g). U may want to buy a new battery, they aren't that expensive. U can get one on amazon for like $15. If that doesn't work, I'd try flashing a different rom, maybe even a custom kernel.
I am still running 4.1.2 because I like it better than the newer versions and my battery life isn't bad. I usually get close to 2.5hrs of screen on time. More than a day of standby. Obviously, if I make a lot of calls I will get less battery life. I'm running eclipse rom with leankernel.

Today i flashed Cyanogen mode 10.1.3. i didnt flashed any google apps just to check what eat battery. When i flashed the ROM the battery was at 36%. I used the mobile for almost 1 hour and on screen time was 54min 37sec and battery left 16%. The cell eat total 20% battery in 1 hour continues on without mobile data network and 2G was on. Wifi GPS every thing was off and brightness was set to auto. At 16% battery i stop using mobile and after 30 mins i check mobile it eat 6% battery in 30 min without any usage. then i truns off the phone and after 30 mins i tried to turn on the cell the battery was dead. then i plugged in the charger and i turn the cell on. The battery charge start from 10% but instead of charging i start loosing battery. then i charged for almost 1 hour on 0% battery and took 5 hours to fully charged. My cell phone drain all battery over night under the usage of phone idle 73%. I'm just confuse about that its the battery issue or its cell phone problem. and my phone getting very hot from back left side. I just need a good developer advise if this is hardware issue then i'm gonna replace the cell phone and if its the battery issue and hardware is ok then i will get a new battery and continue using and 1 more thing my phone get little hot even its turned off from back left side and sim jacket side.
Bump! any suggestion ?
I doubt a developer can answer that question. Could be phone, could be battery. I would try a, new battery just cuz it's cheaper than a new phone. Maybe go back to stock and see if that helps. If not, call Verizon and complain, they may send u a refurbished unit.
