[Q] Hi! T-mobile GS III Question

i am a super omega ultimate noob lv. -99. i am wondering how to check on the latest status of the GSIII stable roms. i would like to know if/when CM will get the roms first or if xda gets them first. i like stable roms because i am a noob. my noobness knows no bounds. please help. i do dontate. thank you.

Right now, CM10 nightly 25 is working great
26 has exhibited a few irritating bugs but I haven't had any problems with nightly 25

Xda is just an outlet where people choose to post roms.
To check on the latest status of roms, you need to open the threads and read the OP. You also need to spend at least ten minutes reading each thread, That will tell you how stable each rom is and what kind of results people are having.

Is there a place for specific roms that we can see a list of all known bugs? I've been trying to check on, for example, CM10, paranoid android, and AOKP in particular and havent been able to find any bug trackers at all. Without knowing what bugs there are and what will/wont affect me, I'm too hesitant to try any of the roms and have been suffering through t-mobile's dual "update ready" and "update needed" constant un-clearable notifications. I cant even apply the stock updates because I debloated and applying the update fails because I dont have the apps that the update is attempting to update. Updating would involve doing a full factory reset back to stock and THEN updating, which means i'm probably better off simply waiting for samsung's official JB update to roll out in the first place

Actually that would be a great idea. It would help out the entire community.
Right now the way things exist, you pretty much have to read through an entire rom thread to determine the benefits/bugs of any given rom.
You could, for example, start a list for any particular rom.. read the entire thread, then make your own thread detailing current known bugs and post it in the same forum. Then the OP of the rom thread could post your link in the first post making it easy for everyone to find.
That would serve two purposes - you would learn the information you're seeking and also become an instantly appreciated contributor to the site.

I'm surprised the rom developers dont already have a system in place, though. The scope of the projects are presumably gargantuan collaborative works. i kind of assumed that they must have some sort of a bug tracking thing that they use between them. That bug tracking thing is what i've been venturing to find. There are a ton of user-specific bugs that I have no problem digging through the forums and figuring out myself, but what i'd love to see with roms is a list of "this is what we know isnt working yet. dont talk to us about this. we are working on it." or at the very least, "when you flash this rom, if you would like to help, run this command and upload the output HERE so we can fix some bugs we know about".
I'm coming from a linux world and it is very disconcerting to me to flash a rom, encounter a bug/error, and not be able to look at any sort of an error message or do anything to fix the problem except reboot/wipe/reflash and hope for the best. thats a very windows-y mentality to the whole thing, and i feel like if we're running linux on the phones we should be able to get a bit more involved in fixing our own problems a bit better too.
I guess what i'm trying to say is, i'd like to help and i have no clue where to even begin. with archlinux theres a beginners guide but with these roms its more of a "watch this youtube video and follow this tutorial but god help you if anyone thinks you are complaining about what people are doing for you for FREE".
EDIT: I found CM10's issue tracker, but there isnt anything specific for the GS3 there. The flicker and picasa sync issues arent even mentioned. Obviously Paranoid Android and Kang will have the same bugs as CM10, but im assuming that they'll have their own bugs introduced after they add in their own features and such.

Two things - one, if you're going to do a lot of flashing, and especially with CM10, you will want to install ROM Manager from the Google Play Store. It will make managing your updates/downloads easier
Two, there is a dedicated thread to CM10 in the "T-Mobile Galaxy S III Original Android Development" forum here:

i've downloaded the CWM pro and the TB pro. i was wondering what exact ROMS i can use. There is also the difficulty of understanding which rom is exactly which. Is there a way to view the Change log? i'm a super noob. i'm really sorry.

Changelogs won't do you much good.
I recommend flashing everything through CWM (make sure you have 6.0.1.2 Touch - in my signature if not). I wouldn't use ROM Manager at all. Having automated tools is great, but learning how to do it yourself is even better. Plus, if you break something, knowning what you are doing makes it easier to fix. Automated tools hurt more than they help.
As for roms, your options pretty much are as follows:
CyanogenMod: AOSP, the closest thing we have to the stock Google firmware.
AOKP: Pretty much CyanogenMod with some extra options. Nothing extraordinary about those extra options, just some nice things like center clock, swagger toggles, and unicorns.
MIUI: iPhone look for Android.
ParanoidAndroid: Scalable - for tablets (imo).
Then you have the neverending amount of customized stock (TouchWiz) roms.
They are all under constant development. If you want "stable", stay on your stock firmware. All of the roms listed above are stable enough to use as a daily driver. They all have threads in the two Dev forums. But if you don't know what to pick, use CyanogenMod.

I still think ROM Manager is a great tool, it's how I started years ago and I still managed to learn what I needed to over time flashing manually

All these threads below are asking the same thing, "What's the best", and the general consensus is that there isn't a "best", it's all about personal preference. And given how many ROMs and kernels there are you'll be hard pushed to find someone that has been able to use them all to give a significant review between the differences.

"What's the best/fastest ROM" threads should be deleted. People don't even use the search tool anymore. They just keep asking the same questions that have been answered in 20 other threads.

I think some1 should make a Rom guide with the diferent aspects of them.
Then when a new user comes in, he can find what hes looking for
- Speedy
- Functionality
- Appearance
- Tweaks
- Etc

That would be great for the original development ROMs, the problem is that the Dev section is full of tweaked user ROMs, a lot of which aren't that noticeably different from the next and are released by People still learning themselves.

[Q] Best Rom.....ok....not really

Ok first off I do hope I'm placing this in the correct section as I am asking a question.
Second I've searched enough threads to know thats a terrible question to ask "what is the best rom..."
So here goes... I am planning on flashing a new rom sometime this week and I'm open to anything out there. I will most likely try a good portion of them and form my opinion of them. However before doing so, I want to get the opinions of the users who has these custom roms. There is no right or wrong answers, I just want to gather a quick summary without plundering and pillaging through all the pages of all the custom roms out there. I'll try to keep it updated in the OP for a summary of the ROMs that people came back with answers to.

I'd rather not answer this as it is so highly dependant on the user's end. A ROM can work beautifully well on someone's phone and work like **** on someone's else. Same goes for kernels and settings.
You're probably already know this but look them up, maybe even try them. But mainly, look at their OP, features, FAQs, to know if the ROM suits your needs. Also, going through the last 10-15 pages of the ROM's thread will enlight you towards whether it's for you or not.

Can't really compare to stock as I flashed it before the phone was fully out of the box.
It's running well on my side but I have my personal mods, which I could apply to anything I'm running. It's stable and smooth (once again with my mods) and can't really comment on the UI as I use a theme and uccw a lot.
The kernel is mainly cause it offers me more freedom when it comes to mods than stock kernel.
I can't say there's a downside other than 4.2.1 has known bugs (which isn't ROM related). Like the BT audio streaming that is borked.

What kind of mods did you look into to make your phone perform the way you want it to? And what did those mod help you accomplish?

[Q] Are specific mods available without flashing a rom?

I'm running Freeza's dedoexed stock MB1 Rom because there are some mods that I want to use, but I can't find them as stand-alone mods. A lot of the Roms have them built in, but they also come with a laundry list of things that aren't what I'm looking for, and/or have things removed that I would still want.
I'd like the Call Record mod, is available as callrecording.zip from Post #2 at Blazer Rom, which I believe is based on Freeza's Rom anyway. If I'm thinking properly, I should just be able to flash that as the Rom is at least partly based on Freeza's rom.
I'd also like to be able to use the camera and flash and wotnot on low battery and while on a phone call, but I haven't seen that mod by itself. And the final thing I'm looking for is the mod to use the volume rocker to skip music tracks while the screen is off.
Are these mods available if I don't use a whole rom to get them? I've searched high and low in the Themes & Apps and Original Android Development forums, but haven't found anything.
Can someone point me in the right direction if they are here somewhere, please? :fingers-crossed:

Just last week we had someone in here almost get crucified (figuratively) for asking pretty much the same question. But you seem like a nice guy, so hopefully it won't happen in this thread.
Unfortunately, there's no comprehensive listing of all available stand-alone mods. That would be a nice project to work on. But it would be hellish to debug (I don't even want to think about all the conflicting script that would go into flashing 10 different mods)
Anyways, onto your question... I think you might be able to find some minor mods here on xda. Where I would start is with the Rom itself. Most roms will list the various mods they have incorporated and will thank the dev who created that mod. Maybe if you look through the thanked users posts, you can find out where they posted the mod. It probably won't be in the Sprint section, so you'll have to be wary of what you're flashing (always nandroid prior to flashing).

Thanks, topherk. Hopefully that won't happen to me! I hadn't thought of looking for the thanked devs and seeing who created the mod. My next stop was to go straight to the Rom developers if I still hadn't found what I was searching for, but you're right, the rom developer might not be the same dev who created the mod.

The way they asked it was completely different. The way their request was interpreted was something like "why don't devs just build the exact Rom with these exact mods I want?"
They obviously were much more tactful than that, but some people could've taken it like that, and the ensuing ****storm was entertaining to watch.
Think you asked the"correct" question, which is whether there exists a listing of mods. I wouldn't mind helping to set up that list, but I feel maintaining it would be a pain, haha.

ROM-choosing suggestions

Hi guys, this is my first post... I'm pretty new with flashing, and seems like even our 2010 phone has a sea of ROMs. I don't know how to choose a ROM, and I cannot find people that know how to help me, so...i'm writing here
Actually i'm running Andromadus Slim Bean, i've tried sense minima (laggy and buggy), cyankat (a lil' slow, but may be caused of what i've installed), PureKat ('till 2.0 -beta 1, because it was way TOO buggy -i'm waiting the 4.0-).
This is my main device, and I use it everyday. I don't need the best looking rom, just the best compromise beetween stability and speed (the speed has priority), and I don't know what to pick.
So yeah, i'm asking you a suggestion, hoping this doesn't violates the rules. Thank you c:

Here you will find all the options for this phone organized by android version and color coded by base type
If you want pure stability I would say gingerbread for this phone will always be best but you will find plenty of newer ROMs that run great too
I put together cyan mobile for this phone and maybe I'm biased but it is about as stable, fast, and feature rich as gingerbread goes with great battery life. aint the prettiest though! You'll find it in the GB section, second link
